Aisha Addo is the founder of Power to Girls Foundation, a non-profit organization that connects young girls with mentors and role models from across the world. Aisha graduated with a degree in Business Administration-Accounting; however, her passion has always been to make the world a better place for women across the world through the provision of guidance and mentorship opportunities. In this episode, Aisha shares with us how at the age of 17, a quest to find her place as a young, black teenage girl in Canada and the retrospective appreciation of the impact role models would have had on her life spurred her on to foster several platforms to provide guidance and mentorship to other young girls like herself. We discuss the integral role that therapy should hold in our lives, where our guest peels off the layered myths which act as a barrier to individuals seeking out therapeutic outlets. She shares the need for particularly young boys and men to utilize therapy as a tool for unravelling and embracing issues that they encounter in their lives. Aisha walks us through her journey towards starting her non-profit, Power to Girls Foundation. She describes how forming a small community of six young girls grew exponentially to sixty attendees at a conference and eventually served as the foundation for connecting mentors and role models to young girls from across the world. We also discuss her use of technology in creating safe spaces for women through her mobile applications, MyPower App, and ridesharing service, DriveHER. Aisha shares the importance of authenticity and of leaning into one's unique personality and characteristics to stand out and to be the very best version of yourself. She also shares a message to women around the world in commemorating the International Women's Day Celebration 2023.Links and Resources:Find Aisha Addo on LinkedIn Donate to Power To GirlsDownload the My Power AppThis podcast is produced by Nexa MediaDo you have a question for our hosts, email us at hello@changeafricapodcast.comFollow the podcast on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and LinkedInWatch on YouTube Hosted on Acast. Black women in Allegheny County earn significantly less than their colleagues — the wage gap between Black women and white men here is even worse than the national average. But a new campaign is trying to change that by encouraging employers to look at existing gaps in their own companies and commit to raising wages for women of color. Rochelle Jackson, founder and director of the Black Women's Policy Center, joins us to discuss the Level Up initiative. As she says, you can't address what you won't acknowledge. Janel Young is a Pittsburgh native, painter, muralist and community leader on a mission to inspire through creativity and play. Her work has been recognized locally and internationally, from New York City – where she resided for 6 years – to the coast of Sydney, Australia. Prior to pursuing art full-time, Janel attended Schenley High School as an International Baccalaureate student athlete, and went on to study Business Marketing and International Studies at Penn State University as a Bunton-Waller Fellow. She relocated to NYC in 2013 to work in public relations as a Digital Content Strategist for industries, including healthcare, tech and non-profits for 5 years. A year after taking the leap to practice art full-time in NYC, Janel's passions came full circle in 2019 as her love for visual arts brought her back to Beltzhoover (her old neighborhood) to install the city's first art basketball court, cleverly coined: The Home Court Advantage Project. The City of Pittsburgh awarded Janel a proclamation for her community-centered effort to wrap the city in color, making October 23, 2019 “JANEL YOUNG DAY” in the City of Pittsburgh. On the anniversary the following year, Janel established the JY Originals Scholarship for Creatives – a $1,000 award for a young adult pursuing the arts. Now serving as the Community Artist in Residence at UrbanKind Institute in Pittsburgh, Janel utilizes visual arts as a communication tool to connect people to equity and justice values and initiatives. She continues to use both Pittsburgh and New York networks for public art projects, youth workshops and speaking opportunities. Janel's latest public works in Pittsburgh include the “Pathway to Joy” asphalt mural at Allegheny Overlook, her first curated project, “New Space Spheres” (both commissioned by Pittsburgh Downtown Partnerships), and “Heroes on the Horizon” at Bakery Square, which is the first three-dimensional mural under her belt. Pathway to Joy is now Young's largest led mural and it kicked off the Dollar Bank Three Rivers Arts Festival serving as the backdrop for the summer 2021 pop-up park experience. For New Space Spheres she led the creation of social distance artwork from four additional Pittsburgh artists for a total of 10 designs that express physical distancing and the new societal space we are in, with a colorful twist. Heroes on the Horizon was completed alongside a residency program with students from local schools, Lincoln and Urban Academy. In New York, Young was selected to exhibit in the “Black Lives to the Front” art showcase during the 2020 U.S. Open tennis tournament. Her canvas titled “Be Open To…” was displayed in the front row of the Arthur Ashe Stadium behind the likes of Serena Williams and Naomi Osaka. Additionally, Janel was chosen to execute the “Gates of Atlantic” security gate mural in East New York, Brooklyn (on Atlantic Avenue). She was paired with a local small business, Gardenia Flower Shop, for a floral design that inspires passersby to keep blooming. Furthermore, Janel teamed up with youth-focused organizations to host in-person and virtual coloring events, where her self-illustrated Color Your Crown natural hair coloring book was donated to kids. She worked with sponsors and supporters from New York non-profit KaleidoQueens, Pittsburgh-based Learning Loft, YMCA, Neighborhood Allies and the Women & Girls Foundation. https://www.janel-young.com/home https://www.janel-young.com/the-arts https://jyoriginals.bigcartel.com/ IG: @jy.originals --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/otherborderwall/message

This season of Speaking of Change invites philanthropic practitioners and community leaders to comment on the book's themes and draw parallels and lessons to inform current practice. Book editor Kathy Buechel sits down with Heather Arnet of the Women and Girls Foundation of Southwestern PA and chapter author Tony Macklin of Tony Macklin Consulting. Empower by Example Episode 7 - Heather Arnet, CEO Women and Girls Foundation of Southwestern PA Get to know Heather Arnet and her work at WGF!! From theater to branding to business development, Heather used her experience as a feminist/activist theater director to step into the role of CEO of a women’s fund that was founded in Pittsburgh in the late 1990’s. Arnet joined the organization in 2004 and she is a tireless advocate for women and girls rights locally, nationally, and internationally. She serves as a regular Op-Ed writer for the Huffington Post, Daily Beast, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette and Pittsburgh Business Times, and commentator to local and national media regarding women and girls’ rights and economic development. At WGF, Arnet has spearheaded efforts to decrease the gender wage gap and increase women’s representation on public and corporate boards. Her mission is so big that everyone wants to be a part of it. There are so many things that impact women and girls, and advocacy work with that gender lens is critical in Pennsylvania. Femisphire is a report WGF released in 2016 that cited 76% of Pittsburgh households living in poverty are single moms. This report grabbed the attention of the larger foundations and endowments in the area, which has led to several initiatives that put single moms at the center of conversations about economic development, the transportation solutions, and fair wages. Learn more by reading the report here: https://wgfpa.org/Femisphere-Phase-One-Presentation-September-2016-combined-3.pdf or watching a short video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9sbqyXPvfNI For more information about intersectionality, Dr. Kimberlé Crenshaw’s Ted Talk is here: https://www.ted.com/talks/kimberle_crenshaw_the_urgency_of_intersectionality?language=en When Arnet came on as CEO, she spent some time asking “Where are the girls?” The GirlGov program was born as they brought girls in to create and run their own programs. It speaks to the culture of WGF, where programs are created by the end user and the participants themselves. Along those lines, in 2019 Codeswitch was an innovative hack-a-thon that put the single moms at the center of all of the conversations. Heather Hopson of Single Mom Defined facilitated 40 single moms attending and participating in a technological solution that would benefit them in the Femisphere. The entire facilitation from the initial meeting to the awards ceremony was about the absolute best product that could be achieved. You can learn more about Codeswitch here: https://wgfpa.org/our-work/codeswitch/ If you are a single mom living in the Pittsburgh area, check out Single Mom Defined: https://www.facebook.com/SingleMomDefined/ WGF is a leader in policy that supports families, and Heather is mobilizing politicians to create policies that reframe the way our society takes leave from work to care from their families. “The sky is the limit. Do not limit yourself, and do not let fear be the reason you do not go after what you want.” - Aisha Addo Aisha Addo says she thrives on working to make the world a better place for women. After leaving her native Ghana to move to Canada at 14 years old, she found herself in foster care for 2 years. At 18 years old she started ‘Power to Girls Foundation‘. Aisha wanted to provide young girls with a space where they could be inspired, empowered and provided with mentorship and support – all the things she wished she'd had growing up. Seven years on, she's taken the foundation to Ghana, and is looking to expand to other African countries. She's also working on building the first Leadership Centre for Women in Ghana to provide skills training for women, so they can gain economic freedom. “Women are natural nurturers. You give us a seed, we give you a farm. So I believe that once you instill knowledge into a young girl, this is something that would go on to create change within the community, create change in society as well.” - Aisha Addo And as if running a foundation wasn't enough, Aisha has also launched Canada's first ride sharing service for women by women. The service, which is called DriveHer, was prompted by seeing the young girls from her foundation struggling to find safe transport, particularly late at night. And what's next on her list of goals?
