EP. 40 - Join me as I sit down with Clarence Alonzo Oliver and discuss his long and exciting career. Drummer, singer, songwriter best known for his work with The Moments (also known as Ray, Goodman & Brown), Clarence has shared the stage with greats like Etta James, Michael Jackson, Najee, Earth, and Wind & Fire. We will talk about how he got his break into the business and what he has learned about the business of music along the way.
Nathaniel Hawthorne Hawthorne was born in 1804 in Salem, Massachussetts. He died in Plymouth New Hampshire. One of his ancestors was John Hathorne who was the only judge in the witch trials who never repented his involvement. His ancestors who came from England in 1630 were Puritans. It is thought that Hathorne added the -w- to his name to make it Hawthorne in his twenties in order to distance himself from these fervent ancestors. He published his first work in 1828 when he was twenty-four. He published a series of short stories. He was a Transcendentalist, a Romantic philosophy which believes in the goodness of human nature and a reliance on intuition and other promptings of the spiritual or natural person rather than relying on reason. Despite his puritan ancestors, Hawthorne liked to take pot shots at puritanism. He is a Romantic and technically what is known as a dark Romantic. He is most famous for his novel The Scarlet Letter which was published in 1859. Also famous is the House of the Seven Gables. His books often feature themes of sin and the inherent evil of humanity. Young Goodman Brown Unless I’ve missed it, we are not told what is special about this night that Goodman Brown is going out to have his tryst with the Devil. His wife, Faith, wants him to be there with her on this night ‘of all nights in the year’, but he has to go out on this night of all nights in the year. He is clearly expecting to meet the Devil and has some business with him, but it’s not clear to me what that business is. It turns out that all the people he thought pious, including his father and grandfather as well as various deacons and goodies and goodmen of the town and state are wicked to the core. But what was his own mission exactly? I’m not clear. He clearly needs to do his dirty deed on this particular night and afterwards He discusses meeting the Devil and then a man appears who has the look of his grandfather, it transpires. This man was in Boston only fifteen minutes previously and that seems pretty fast travel for the Seventeenth Century. The Devil says that Brown is late, and Brown answers that, ‘Faith kept me back a while.’ Ah, yes indeed. Faith has two meanings here, I think. We hear from Good Cloyse that a young man is to be taken into communion with the witches that night, and we hear from Deacon Gookin that a young woman is to be inducted. We realise that this is Faith of course as Hawthorne intends us to, but of which poor Goodman Brown is ignorant. This is called Dramatic Irony according to Robert McKee, where the audience knows more than the character. However, the story is well done. We are led step by step as our Goodman falls deeper into temptation and then, the scales are removed from his eyes and the Devil tells him that evil is the basic currency of human nature. He believes it and henceforth mistrusts the virtue of his own dear wife and his own pastor. This is foreshadowed by Hawthorne at the outset of the journey when, after Faith has failed to convince him to stay home, she hopes that he finds all well on his return, to which he replies: ‘Amen’. But when he returns has changed all due to his change in attitude, because as Hamlet says, ‘there is nothing either good or bad, but thinking makes it so. Goodman Brown is a lukewarm Satanist at the best. He begins by telling Old Nick that he has scruples in the matter that ‘thou wots’t of’. (You know of. English used to have two verbs for to know, like French and German an Welsh and Irish and other languages I know. One was ‘to wit’ which was to know a thing, and the other ‘to ken’ which is to be familiar with or know a person or place. German keeps the same two words. Ich weiss, and Ich kenn. There you go. Born and raised in Hamilton, OH, the fourth child of nine, he gravitated toward music at an extremely early age; he was only five years old when he received his first guitar. 119. By 11, he was playing in local bands with one of his brothers. 120. Influenced by old-schoolers B.B. King, Jimmy Reed, Chuck Jackson, and Junior Walker, and then-current chart-toppers The Temptations, Wilson Pickett, and the Beatles, by the late '60s, Roger had added Hammond organ to his resumé of instruments, and 2 more brothers. 121. Clinton promptly signing the group to his own custom label, Uncle Jam. 124. Clinton got Roger (Not Zapp) a performance spot at a 1979 Awards show and declared “Roger Troutman as the most talented musician” he'd ever seen in his life. After the 1980 release of Zapp's debut album, tensions rose between Roger Troutman and George Clinton. Troutman's solo album “The Many Facets of Roger” was primarily funded by Clinton and Clinton was experiencing financial troubles due to his poor management skills and shifting tastes in music. 127. Troutman could see the disarray surrounding Clinton and severed their partnership by accepting a higher offer for the album from Warner Bros. and cut Clinton out of the picture. 128. Clinton's view was, "…I paid for it. I don't like to go into it on the negative side, but it cost about 5 million [dollars], and a lot of people's jobs and what we consider as the empire falling". - The financial loss from the rupture with Troutman is credited as one of the factors that derailed Clinton's musical career and sent Funkadelic into hiatus. 129. On Sunday morning, April 25, 1999, Roger Troutman was fatally wounded as a result of an apparent murder-suicide that was orchestrated by his older brother, Larry. Roger was shot several times in the torso by Larry as he exited a recording studio. Larry's body was found in a car a short distance away from the murder scene. There were no witnesses at the time, and Larry's motive for the murder of Roger remains unclear. Larry had been experiencing increasingly severe financial problems managing the family-run business. Larry might also have been bitter after Roger fired him as manager of his music career, a position Larry had held for several years. 130. After Troutman's death, Ice Cube said that "More Bounce To The Ounce" introduced him to hip-hop. "I was in the sixth grade, we'd stayed after school. We had this dude named Mr. Lock, and he used to bring in his radio with these pop-lockers. He used to teach [the dance group] the L.A. Lockers, and he would do community service in after-school programs. He knew a lot of kids and introduced them to all the new dances, he put on that song 'More Bounce', and they started pop-locking. And I think from that visual, from seeing that, it was my first introduction into hip-hop. Period. I didn't know nothing about nothing. I hadn't heard 'Rapper's Delight' yet. It was the first thing that was really fly to me. They started dancing, and since 'More Bounce' goes on forever, they just got down. I just think that was a rush of adrenaline for me, like a chemical reaction in my brain.” 131. Open Comments 132. Black Movies: Fame 133. The film -- which won two Oscars for its music (including a Best Original Song statuette for the title track "Fame" -- spawned a 1980s TV series of the same name that allowed several of its young stars to reprise their roles and gave Debbie Allen a much more prominent role as a no-nonsense dance teacher. 134. El Joven Goodman Brown es un relato tan impresionante como lo puedan ser los mejores de Dostoyevski. El protagonista, Goodman Brown, emprende una extraña excursión entre el crepúsculo y el alba, durante la cual se ve acompañado por el diablo, que intenta convencerlo de que vive en realidad en un mundo lleno de hipocresía y cuyos más santos y destacados exponentes son fieles adoradores del mal. Goodman Brown se resiste a creerlo, pero las evidencias le llevan a la desesperación. Aunque finalmente resistirá las intimaciones del diablo, saldrá de esta noche con un cambio profundo en su carácter. ¿Lo ha soñado o lo ha vivido? Tanto da. Goodman Brown no podrá volver a contemplar a sus convecinos, ni tan siquiera a su esposa, como antes. Hawthorne traza aquí los rasgos distintivos de la narrativa norteamericana moderna, que desembocaron en lo que se ha dado en denominar, algo imprecisamente a mi gusto, el "gótico de Nueva Inglaterra". El ambiente puritano de las colonias, en extremo opresivo, con su herencia de cazas de brujas y su permanente obsesión por el demonio y el mal, las reminiscencias de la presencia india pagana y sus cultos chamánicos, la forma de una sociedad tradicionalmente muy cercana y cerrada, sectaria en muchas ocasiones, tan dependiente de sus miembros que veda la noción de vida privada, todo ello conformó desde el principio una sociedad distintiva y peculiar en sus miembros y costumbres, nido de la hipocresía, el silencio y los secretos apenas musitados. De si esto es así o no hoy, o de si ya en su tiempo fueron exageraciones de Hawthorne, importa poco.
