What does it take to dedicate your life to photographing the wild, and do it with purpose, integrity, and impact? In this episode, I sit down with legendary wildlife photographer Tom Murphy, a Montana-based Yellowstone photographer whose work has not only captured the soul of the natural world, but has now earned the incredible honor of being featured on a United States postage stamp.Tom shares his wild storeis of documenting Girzzly Bears, Bison, Gorillas, and more in his career that has spanned more than 40 years as a professional wildlife photographer. He was also the first photographer ever to be licensed to teach photography workshops in the National Park system. We dive deep into Tom's journey—from how he first picked up a camera to building a lifelong career photographing wildlife across the globe. Along the way, we explore the ethics of wildlife photography, what it truly means to respect the animals and environments we photograph, and how to go beyond simply documenting animals to actually revealing who they are through behavior and storytelling.Tom also shares the real truth about making money as a wildlife photographer, how to create lasting value in your work, and what it takes to sustain a career in one of the most challenging genres of photography. We also get personal—talking about lessons learned over decades, what he might do differently if he started over, and the advice he would give photographers chasing a similar path today. This is an inspiring, honest, and deeply insightful conversation about art, responsibility, and the wild places that shape us.
A creative director once drew something on a napkin that completely changed how I saw my own limitations. His name was Ted, and he showed me why I was so unhappy at 26, stuck in my fifth job in six years, and dangerously close to needing a sixth. The illustration he drew explained why it's so difficult to create something remarkable when you're trapped inside such a small, constricted world. In this episode, I'm sharing that story and asking you a challenging question: Where have you drawn the boundaries in your own life? Those walls that make the whole experience smaller, safer, and duller? You might think it's your boss, your spouse, or your circumstances holding you back. But what if it's actually you? This is a sneak peek from my new book Procrastination Proof, which releases tomorrow. If you preorder it today, you get the entire audiobook for free at jonacuff.com/proof. This year,Murphy's photography will reach millions in a new way: his imageof a modern American bison, powerfully superimposed by a 1923historic stamp counterpart, has been selected for an upcoming U.S.postage stamp — an enduring tribute to one of the nation's most iconicsymbols and the landscapes that define us. But TomMurphy is more than a celebrated photographer. He is a living witness to America'swild places. If you've ever been moved by an image of anAmerican bison, the wolves of Yellowstone, orthe vast, untamedbeauty of the American West, chances are you've already encounteredhis work. Raised on a7,500-acre cattle ranch, Murphy learned early what he didn't want— to chase cows — and what he couldn't live without:clean air, wide horizons, and wild land. By the 1970s, Murphy had becomea professional photographer, beginning a lifelong love affair withYellowstone National Park. Overdecades, Murphy has skied more than 2,000 miles through Yellowstone's backcountry and hiked many thousands more.He has crossed thepark on skis three times in winter — once on a 175-mile solo tripin 14 days. These extraordinary journeys granted him rare access tofree-roaming wildlife in their natural environment, resultingin images defined by intimacy, respect, and awe. His workhas been exhibited in galleries, museums, and major national venues, andpublished in National Geographic, Audubon, Time, Newsweek, The NewYork Times Magazine, and Esquire. Murphy's photography has alsoappeared in documentaries and television, including the PBS Nature filmChristmas in Yellowstone. His firstbook, Silence and Solitude, won the 2002 Montana Book Award, and itscompanion film — produced by Montana PBS — earned an Emmy nominationfor photography and videography. Murphy also created the acclaimedSeasons of Yellowstone series and several other long-form visualprojects celebrating the rhythms of the natural world. Beyond hisartistic achievements, Murphy has dedicated his life to conservation and service. He leads WildernessPhotography Expeditions, guidingphotographers into what he calls “natural cathedrals,” withproceeds donated to environmental organizations. He has served on theNational Advisory Council of Yellowstone Forever, the Park County Environmental Council, and is a co-founder ofthe Park County Search and RescueTeam, which he helped organize in 1982. Murphy'snext book, Yellowstone Bison The Return of the Last Wild Herd, isslated for release in May 2026 — an expansive visual and historicaltribute to the animal that has shaped both the American landscapeand its identity. In an eraof speed and spectacle, Tom Murphy's work reminds us to slow down, look closer, and remember what still endures.

Document examiner Neil Holland has worked on documents related to investigations into alleged Nazi war criminals, accused killers and dodgy bookies, and resurrected the writing on a document found inside a corpse’s stomach. In 1985, when Neil was the head of the Victoria Police document examination branch, the National Gallery of Victoria made history - acquiring Pablo Picasso's The Weeping Woman. At $2 million, it was the most expensive artwork ever purchased by a gallery in Australia. Less than a year later, it was gone. Stolen in a daring heist that left police, the art world, and the media stunned. Eighteen days after the theft, Neil found himself in the back of a police van in the dead of night - cradling a brown paper package. Inside? The missing Picasso, taken hostage by a group calling themselves the Australian Cultural Terrorists. In this episode, he’s here to tell host Liz Porter the story.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

In Part 1 of Episode 37, I'm thrilled to be joined for the 100th time by Tom Patri, along with a special return visit from the 1989 Open Champion, Mark Calcavecchia. Tom Patri and I kick things off by reflecting on last week's Scottish Open and Robert MacIntyre's impressive victory. We also discuss the ISCO Championship and the close call for Pierceson Coody, a rising star Tom has been touting. Tom shares his experiences playing at Royal Troon and offers a valuable putting lesson on how to get the ball rolling end over end instead of skidding for the first few feet. Mark Calcavecchia returns to share memories from his triumph at the 1989 Open Championship, held at this year's venue, Royal Troon. He discusses the challenges of the 123-yard 8th hole, famously known as The Postage Stamp, and recounts his long par save on the 11th hole, the slam dunk chip shot he made on the 12th that shifted his mindset, and what it felt like standing over a 7-footer on the final playoff hole with three putts to win. Mark also shares his prediction for who will be holding the Claret Jug this Sunday afternoon.

We talk big shot Bob McIntyre and the crazy break he got with a sprinkler in the fescue on way to winning his home open, the Scottish Open last week. We have a few other thoughts on the Scottish Open and how it relates to Royal Troon this week. Will one of the favorites win this week or will someone come out of nowhere to win the Open Championship? Is the Postage Stamp at Royal Troon the greatest par 3 in golf? Artist Georg Elliot Olden featured a broken chain on the first African American-designed stamp to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Emancipation Proclamation. It was first made available to the public on August 16, 1963. Olden's careful attention to detail and symbolic representation captured the essence of the occasion, serving as a powerful reminder of the progress made and the challenges that lay ahead in the ongoing struggle for civil rights. Olden's design was praised by then President John F. Kennedy as “a reminder of the extraordinary actions in the past as well as the business of the future,” reports the Professional Association for Design. Learn more about your ad choices. Welcome to July 1st, 2022 on the National Day Calendar. Today we celebrate special deliveries come rain or shine. The United States issued its first postage stamps on July 1, 1847. They were not, however, the first of their kind. In the United Kingdom, the Penny Black stamp attempted to fix a broken system. Before then, mail recipients were good at dodging payment for this service. Here in America, a letter could be mailed without prepayment until 1855. Despite new regulations, people continued to take advantage of a system that charged only 15 cents for an 11-pound package. The strangest of these was a small baby that was delivered to his grandmother who lived a few miles away. Even the stork couldn't compete with those prices! On National U.S. Postage Stamp Day celebrate a valuable service that still delivers come rain or shine. “Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night stays these couriers from the swift completion of their appointed rounds.” Everyone knows this is the motto for the United States Postal Service. Except…it isn't. The Postal Service doesn't actually have a motto. So where did this well-known phrase come from? It was written by Herodotus around 500 BCE to describe the postal carriers of his time. When the New York City Post Office opened in 1914, one of the designers liked the quote and had it engraved into the cornerstone. Today is National Postal Worker Day, when we celebrate the men and women who make sure all our letters and packages find their way to us. Except for the bills. We don't mind if those get lost. I'm Anna Devere and I'm Marlo Anderson. Thanks for joining us as we Celebrate Every Day! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
