Carlin was most closely identified with the monologue “Seven Words You Can Never Say on Television,” in which he satirically analyzed the use and misuse of seven of the raunchiest obscenities in the English language. Carlin was arrested in 1972 for performing the monologue onstage, but a judge dismissed the case. In 1973 New York City radio station WBAI-FM triggered a lawsuit by the FCC after it aired a recorded version of the routine called “Filthy Words.” The landmark “Carlin case” was finally settled in 1978 by the U.S. Supreme Court: in a 5–4 ruling, it gave the FCC the ability to censor offensive content in radio and TV broadcasts.Carlin released more than 20 comedy albums and starred in 14 HBO television specials. As an actor, he usually played a character inspired by his own comic persona (as in the short-lived situation comedy The George Carlin Show [1994]), with the notable exception of his stint in the 1990s as the amiable narrator (and onscreen host, Mr. Conductor) of the children's programs Thomas the Tank Engine and Friends and Shining Time Station. Carlin was honoured with the American Comedy Awards' Lifetime Achievement Award (2001) and the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor (2008). In 2004 the cable television network Comedy Central ranked Carlin second on its list of the “100 Greatest Stand-Ups of All Time,” behind African American actor-comedian Richard Pryor and just ahead of the legendary Lenny Bruce. His final HBO special, It's Bad for Ya, aired just months before his death, and it won the Grammy Award for best comedy album in 2009. His memoir, Last Words, was published later that year. From: https://www.britannica.com/biography/George-Carlin.For more information about George Carlin:Previously on The Quarantine Tapes:Andy Borowitz about Carlin, at 20:25: https://quarantine-tapes.simplecast.com/episodes/the-quarantine-tapes-152-andy-borowitz“Jon Stewart Interviews George Carlin”: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nCGGWeD_EJk“The Station That Dared to Defend Carlin's ‘Seven Words' Looks Back”: https://www.nytimes.com/2008/06/25/nyregion/25wbai.html

On this episode, the Barretta Brothers welcome Ricky Gervais and Matt Vogel to speak about their experiences in the comedy, acting, and puppeteering industries. They delve into their influences and some of their favorite bits and characters. Ricky discusses how people live vicariously through comedians and the value in enjoying yourself and living to have fun. Then, Matt speaks on vocal matching, specifically with Kermit, what peaked his interest in puppets, and how acting fuels great puppeteering.   We address:   What draws people to Ricky Gervais?   What inspired him to create Afterlife? Will there be more seasons?   How did Matt get into acting and puppeteering?   What's his new podcast, Below The Frame, all about?   What have their experiences with The Muppets been like?   We get old because we stop playing! Tune into this week's episode to hear how Ricky Gervais enjoys life and for a fun look into the world of being a puppeteer, a comedian, and an actor. Plus, we get a call from a very special friend whom you may know and love… Constantine!     3 MAJOR POINTS DISCUSSED Free speech is the petri dish of ideas. Ricky describes his candid thoughts on free speech and how comedy comes from sharing your opinions, being honest, and saying what's on your mind. Cancel culture inspired Ricky Gervais to create Afterlife. After seeing the negative side of cancel culture on social media and all the extremes that social media presents to the world, like the extreme right vs the extreme left, he was inspired to develop the series Afterlife. He knew that people feared sharing their opinions. He thought: If you lost everything and you have nothing to lose, you could say what you want. What is losing everything? Losing everything would be losing your life partner. Tune in to find out how many more seasons of Afterlife you can expect Ricky to create. To be a great puppeteer, it's helpful to have a strong background in acting. Matt details his background and how he got into acting after a not so fun experience puppeteering. He relates the two and notes what he learned from acting that can be directly applied to puppeteering.   OUTLINE OF THIS EPISODE What's coming up? George Wallace By the age of six, George Wallace knew he wanted to be a comedian. He always enjoyed making people laugh, but he also knew the importance of an education. He attended the University of Akron, Ohio and upon graduating with degrees in Transportation, Marketing/Advertising, plus advance studies in Radio and Television from Columbia School of Broadcasting. Literally, a rags-to-riches story, Wallace went from selling rags to VP of Advertising. Still, his dream of being a comedian had a strong hold on him. Within a week of leaving the advertising field, he began to perform stand-up comedy and was offered a job writing for “The Redd Foxx Show.” Wallace is currently pursuing dual coursework at University of Phoenix and DeVry. With his writing and stand-up experience, Wallace began landing television appearances. Wallace was awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2013 Soul Train/Centric Comedy All-Star Awards; and won Best Stand Up Comedian at the prestigious American Comedy Awards after four consecutive nominations. As a veteran radio personality, he has also made appearances on “The Steve Harvey Morning Show” and is a charter member of “The Tom Joyner Morning Show.” In 2004 Wallace appeared as the headlining star of his own show at The Flamingo Hotel in Las Vegas for a 30 day run. Sin City showed its admiration by extending Wallace’s contract indefinitely and nicknaming him “The New Mr. Vegas.” Unlike any other comedy show in Las Vegas, Wallace gave away a number of prizes every night including CDs, DVDs, diamond necklaces, dinner at prestigious restaurants, gourmet chocolates, tropical cruises and even a new car. He celebrated his 10th Anniversary headlining at the Flamingo in March 2014, announced he was closing the show to head back out on the road.  Wallace regularly performs in comedy clubs across the country and is an ambassador for the United States government, performing at military bases all over the world. His first book, LAFF IT OFF (Chaite Press) was published in 2014. A tome of life wisdom, humor and insight from a lifetime of observation, the book is in its third printing.  Wallace’s most recognized material is his “I Be Thinkin’” lines and jokes about everything from conversational thoughts to political aspirations. Each show he engages members of the audience in comical banter. If provoked, he might even throw out a few of his signature “Yo Mama” jokes. He shows his gratitude to the audience by signing autographs and taking photos after every show. Audience members never know what will happen at the George Wallace show. Wallace is an evolving comedian, which is why his show is different every night. He’s always thinkin’. Fans can now get a taste of what Wallace be thinkin’ on Twitter @MrGeorgeWallace. This episode is a Halloween special. The interview has two parts. First we discuss the book and then we discuss what Jeff Abraham looks for as a publicist. "The Show Won't Go On: The Most Shocking, Bizarre, and Historic Deaths of Performers Onstage" is the first comprehensive study of a bizarre phenomenon: performers who died while performing before an audience. From the comedy magician who dropped dead on live television to the amateur thespian who expired during a play called The Art of Murder, the book is a celebration of lives both famous and obscure, as well as a dramatic and accurate recounting of events leading to the moments they died "doing what they loved." The Show Won't Go On covers almost every genre of entertainment, and is full of unearthed anecdotes, exclusive interviews, colorful characters and ironic twists. With dozens of heart-stopping stories, it's the perfect book to dip into on any page. Jeff Abraham is one of Hollywood's foremost comedy historians and the go-to pop culture expert for television producers, documentary directors and authors.  As senior account executive at Jonas Public Relations, he's gained a reputation for representing some of the top names in comedy, including Andrew Dice Clay, Steve Harvey, George Lopez, Bill Maher and, for the last eleven years of his life, George Carlin.  Not limiting his work to comedians, Jeff has a varied clientele that includes many actors, actresses and authors, for whom he's created countless successful book launch and promotion campaigns. The owner and curator of the largest comedy album archives in Hollywood, he's been called upon as research consultant to countless authors and numerous film documentaries and television specials including Make ‘Em Laugh for PBS; Comedy Central's 100 Greatest Stand-Ups of All Time; Let Me In, I Hear Laughter: A Salute To Friar’s Club on Cinemax; and the acclaimed Encore film, Method to the Madness of Jerry Lewis.  Jeff has conducted interviews for The Archive of American Television, worked closely with The Paley Center for Media, and is on the board of The National Comedy Center.  He's also author of the upcoming authorized biography of The Ritz Brothers.  Jeff's Links Web: https://theshowwontgoon.com Twitter: https://twitter.com/MrComedyPR And don’t forget to support the podcast by subscribing for free, reviewing, and sharing. Saturday Night Live Alum, Jim Breuer, called the show for a special Father's Day episode. In our more than four years on the air, Jim's interview soared up to one of my all time favorites. Jim Breuer remains one of today’s top entertainers and continues to win over audiences with his off-the-wall humor and lovable personality. Named one of Comedy Central’s “100 Greatest Stand-Ups of All Time,” Breuer is one of the most recognizable comedians in the business, known for his charismatic stage antics, dead-on impressions, and family-friendly stand-up.   "I love this topic!" - Jim Breuer From Home Improvement to Saturday Night Live, Jim Breuer brings a comedy legacy to audiences across the country. Calling the show, Jim also shared his huge heart and great love of family as shared his own journey as a caregiver.  Recalling introducing his father to Sylvester Stallone, Jim launched into an impression of the Rocky star that had us howling with laughter. Jim's rapid fire delivery showed no mercy to John and me as we vainly tried to catch our breath. But then just as quick, Jim opened his heart to share deeply personal and poignant events with his father. On The Road With Dad In 2008, Breuer set out for his “Breuniversity Tour” with his 85-year-old father and a film crew. “The Jim Breuer Road Journals,” showcased what life is like on the road with a comedian and his father. Videos from that tour also sparked the making of his documentary “More Than Me,” which was shown at the 2009 Montreal Film Festival. A Family Man—A Marriage Warrior Breuer’s one-hour Comedy Central special “Let’s Clear the Air” premiered in 2009.  This special contained hilarious topics that included what “success” really is, his SNL days and life with his elderly parents, his wife and his three daughters. Jim's latest special focuses on what Breuer’s life (and all of our lives) truly consist of: dealing with the elderly, becoming our parents’ caretakers, parenting teenagers, and what it takes to be a “marriage warrior.” Bats, Balls, and Breu Jim is a baseball fan, but he is a METS super-fan. The sheer joy he takes in ‘his’ team is completely infectious. Even to non-fans. Even to Yankee’s fans. But as fun, charming and watchable as Jim is, in this one way, he is not unique. These kind of fans are everywhere: they are you, your uncle, that guy from accounting who spent all his vacation time following the Cubs in the playoffs… Bats, Balls and Breu is Jim’s way to start a baseball revolution. He’s giving baseball fans a voice and a platform, because baseball belongs to all of us.   Check out the new single from Peter's CD, SONGS FOR THE CAREGIVER.  This original song written by Peter and veteran songwriter, Buddy Mondlock, captures the heart of a caregiver.  (Download on Itunes) Check out these additional great caregiver resources (Click on Pics) The radio show for caregivers is an outreach of Standing With Hope.  For more than thirty years, Peter Rosenberger's has served as a caregiver for his wife, Gracie, trough a medical nightmare.
