A $10 million reward is being offered for his capture. New evidence is being revealed in the case against Bryan Kohberger, the man accused of killing four University of Idaho students more than two years ago. The evidence includes a series of texts sent between the two surviving roommates who were inside the house at the time of the murders. The couple's bodies were discovered in their Santa Fe home last month. At least 164 measles cases have been reported across nine states this year, with two unvaccinated patients — a child in Texas and an adult in New Mexico — dying from the virus. Health experts warn that measles can weaken the immune system, increasing the risk of future infections in a condition known as "immune amnesia." CBS News medical contributor Dr. Céline Gounder explains the long-term impact. New data shows layoffs increased last month to the highest level since the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic. Anthony Mason sits down with him to discuss the performance. Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo's powerful duet "Defying Gravity" highlights the stunning visuals of the"Wicked" film, where costume designer Paul Tazewell reimagined Oz through more than 1,000 intricate designs. THE WIZ COMPOSER: Charlie Smalls LYRICIST: Charlie Smalls BOOK: William F. Brown SOURCE: L. Frank Baum's book The Wonderful Wizard of Oz (1900) DIRECTOR: Geoffrey Holder CHOREOGRAPHER: George Faison PRINCIPLE CAST: Andre DeShields (The Wiz), Mabel King (Evillene), Stephanie Mills (Dorothy), OPENING DATE: Jan 5, 1975 CLOSING DATE: Jan 28, 1979 PERFORMANCES: 1,672 SYNOPSIS: During a violent tornado, Dorothy is transported from Kansas to the magical land of Oz. Accompanied by her friends The Scarecrow, The Tin Man, and The Cowardly Lion, Dorothy begins an adventure down the Yellow Brick Road to meet the Wiz. Accessing the universal themes in L Frank Baum's The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, The Wiz retold the classic story through a contemporary African-American lens. The show proved the potential for success in big-budget, fantasy stories with all Black casts. Jerrell L. "Come on and ease on down, ease on down the road..." For our second week in The Wizard of Oz Month, we're discussing the 1975 Broadway musical The Wiz: The Super Soul Musical "Wonderful Wizard of Oz" with music and lyrics by Charlie Smalls (and others) and book by William F. Brown. In addition to reading the show's script, we watched the 1979 film adaptation starring Diana Ross and Michael Jackson as well as the 2015 production of The Wiz Live! starring Shanice Williams, Queen Latifah, David Alan Grier, and more. This cultural sensation's plot is remarkably faithful to L. Frank Baum's original Oz book, but there are plenty of moments of adaptation to talk about along the way. Within these three formats - the script, the movie, and the TV adaptation - we find plenty of variation! We discuss Dorothy's different relationships with Aunt Em, Diana Ross's strange arrival in Munchkinland, the Scarecrow's songs, the Kalidah and Poppy battles, the owl therapist, Queen Latifah as a female Wiz, the lessons Dorothy learns along the way, and much more! "Are you a good witch or a bad witch?" We are starting The Wizard of Oz Month with the classic 1939 film starring Judy Garland, Ray Bolger, Jack Haley, Bert Lahr, Billie Burke, Frank Morgan, and Margaret Hamilton. Drew and Cassie start by revisiting their personal connections to this nostalgic musical film before talking through the plot that has been majorly streamlined from L. Frank Baum's original novel. We talk through many of the smart and fun changes the movie makes, like expanding the Kansas scene and swapping out the silver shoes for ruby slippers. We talk about the movie's dedication and opening shot, the origins of the farmhands, the transition from Kansas to Oz, Glinda's questionable motives, Buddy Ebsen's lingering presence, the snow that saves them from the poppies, and more! Plus, you will not want to miss Cassie's unique connection to this movie! Next time, join us as we discuss the 1975 Broadway musical The Wiz: The Super Soul Musical "Wonderful Wizard of Oz" by Charlie Smalls and William F. Brown, its 1978 film adaptation starring Diana Ross and Michael Jackson, and The Wiz Live! starring Shanice Williams and Queen Latifah. Join our community! Blending 2-D and 3-D, his illustrations are an assemblage of traditional drawing and painting, cut paper relief, meticulous models, and the odd found object. His clients include Penguin Random House, The New York Times, The Washington Post, This American Life, Disney Theatrical, and Interview Magazine. His illustrations can be seen at JeffHinchee.com. For television, Jeff has created special illustrations and featured graphics for "Little America", "Single Parents", "Search Party, and "Transparent", as well as for the European Games, and numerous live musical events such as “The Wiz Live!” and “Hairspray Live!” on NBC. Someone as prolific and consistently stellar as Queen Latifah needs no introduction. At every surprising turn of her career as an actor, musician, and producer, she's used an exacting work ethic and irrepressible enthusiasm to inspire women like her. “There were no blueprints for a lot of what I was doing,” she says of her beginnings in the music and filmmaking industries. How has she persevered for so long? “You have to fail,” she advises. “I, luckily, was thrown out there in enough things to fail and cry and get up and fail and cry.” After blazing trails as one of the first women in jazz-rap at age 17, Queen Latifah refused pigeonholing in the biz, getting her start onscreen in Spike Lee's “Jungle Fever” and Will Smith's “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.” She's since starred in “Living Single,” “Set It Off,” “Bringing Down the House,” “Chicago,” “Last Holiday,” “Hairspray,” “Bessie,” “The Wiz Live,” “Girls Trip,” “Star,” “Flint,” “The Little Mermaid Live,” and “Hollywood,” earning an Emmy Award, three SAG Awards, two NAACP Image Awards, and an Academy Award nomination. She now produces CBS' action-drama “The Equalizer,” on which she stars as Robyn McCall. This episode is brought to you by HBO. August 22, 2016: I was very lucky to find a few minutes to speak with Capathia Jenkins this week. When not performing on TV and Broadway, she is busy crisscrossing the globe performing on the world's biggest stages with the finest orchestras. Last year I performed in Philadelphia, Atlanta and Jacksonville with Capathia in Classic Soul. She brought the house down in all three cities, every single night of the show. It was a real thrill to hear her sing each night and to perform with her. In this episode we learn about Capathia's early influences including the church and R&B, the significance of a teacher's encouragement, how her aural skills broadened at Temple University, the moment that she felt as though she had finally made it, why live music is always her favorite, and her deep passion for her work with Covenant House. This Brooklyn-born and raised actress most recently starred as ‘Medda' in the hit Disney production of Newsies' on Broadway. She made her Broadway debut in The Civil War, where she created the role of Harriet Jackson. An active concert artist, Ms. Jenkins has appeared with orchestras around the world including the Pittsburgh Symphony (with Marvin Hamlisch), National Symphony, Atlanta Symphony, Toronto Symphony, Calgary Philharmonic, The Philly Pops, and the Hong Kong Philharmonic, just to name a few. Her Television credits include 30 Rock, the Practice, Law & Order SVU, the Sopranos, Law & Order and The Wiz Live! When not acting and singing she spends much of her free time supporting the efforts of Covenant House by serving on the board of directors and organizing Sleep Out: Broadway Edition.
