The nature of COLLECTIVISM is that it eventually comes for us ALL...even the progressives! There really is no escaping it, and especially if you combine the ideology with STATE POWER. Jillian Michaels is gay woman, with a Jewish Mother and an Arab Father and she feels as if the world has shifted beneath her feet...and it has! The state's appetite for control and power knows no limits and yields for nobody's liberty. More and more progressives will begin to notice that they no longer agree with the most extreme elements of the collective. The reason for this is because everybody is INDIVIDUALLY minded about some things, and as the state continues to increasingly pursue power, it inevitably runs headlong into conflict with the individual. Django Nudo and the Smut Peddler are thrilled with the reception to the Mike Vraney Memorial Month, with a wealth of new films from Lisa Petrucci - the first Theme Month when we did TWO films each day - and an influx of new members. (There will be more news from Something Weird Video soon.) 'Roughies' such as "Unholy Matrimony" (1966) were definitely a favourite of Mike's. We discuss why we don't have any 'subscribers', but only MEMBERS, how we do the Jewish Mother guilt trip to get them to stay and why Cultpix is amazing value at $4.92 if you sign up for a whole year, while some people pay $6.66 to just watch one film. The theme week is the Scopitone, an amazing machine, described as "If a Wurlitzer Jukebox and an old tube television had a love child, it would look like the Scopitone," by Between the Liner Notes (BTLN). It was the tall and grown up version of the jukebox, placed in cocktail bars, where people were prepared to pay a quarter to see a precursor to the music video. The $3,500 machine ($26,000 in today's money) was expensive, but often paid for itself in as little as three months. There was mobster, Kennery and Debie Reynolds connections, all of which we discuss. If you want to dig deeper, look out for Stevenson's essay, “The Jukebox that Ate the Cocktail Lounge”, in his book "Land of a Thousand Balconies: Discoveries and Confessions of a B-Movie Archaeologist", and while we are on the subject of Jack...Cultpix is having a bunch of IRL events in the next month, including:Scandinavian Sin at the Offscreen Film Festival at Cinema Nova 7th March in Brussels, with Jack Stevenson and Christina Lindberg;Nordic Horror Fest at Husets Biograf in Copenhagen, 17th February; We will be at the Berlin Film Festival, so drop us a line if you want to meet up and have a beer. February's theme is Filthy 50th, in which we celebrate the adult films that were released in 1974, right in the middle of the so-called "golden age of American pornography" or 'porno chic'. We kick off with a porn film by Roberta Findlay called "Angel on Fire" (1974), aka "Angel 9", called "The first erotically explicit film ever made by a woman". At least 20 of the films are new to Cultpix. Also in February, we will have a take-down of Ingmar Bergman (with his black sheep daughter Anna Bergman), some cool and culty films from the Estonian Film Institute (Nazis!! In a lunatic asylum!) and a Spotlight on Echelon Studios. We finish with the intro music to "Libahunt / Werewolf" (1968) from Estonia, directed by Leida Laius. "Tiina, the daughter of a woman burned as a witch, grows up on a farm with the orphan girl Mari and Margus, the son of the Tammaru family. Margus loves the hotblooded, energetic Tiina, but his parents want him to marry Mari. Mari thinks Tiina has bewitched Margus, and spreads a rumor that her stepsister is a werewolf."

In the first of two Christmas episodes, Helen and Dave take another look at arguably the "best-known and least-known" woman in history: Mary, the mother of Jesus. Our guest, the fantastic James Tabor, collects the few breadcrumbs of information about Mary in the New Testament and weaves together a compelling narrative about a Jewish matriarch at the center of the Jesus movement. James Tabor's latest book, The Lost Mary: How the Jewish Mother of Jesus Became the Virgin Mother of God, will be published in 2025 (the French version is available now!). Dom welcomes Amanda Greenberg onto the Dom Giordano Program, a local Jewish mother, teacher, and candidate for School Board who penned a piece for Broad and Liberty expressing her fear in the way she and her family may be targeted following the pro-Palestinian rhetoric coming from the Left and academia. Greenberg first contextualizes her history, telling that she originates from the Phoenix suburbs, where unlike here in Philadelphia, Jewish people were looked at as different and in a negative light. She explains that she's not immune to hearing attacks on Jews, but this incident is different due to the magnitude and the global precedent that it sets. (Photo by Mohammed Dahman/Getty Images)
Hello everyone and welcome to another edition of Interviewing the Legends I'm your host Ray Shasho. One of the most in demand blues / rock guitarists in the world is a mysterious character who goes by the name of G.E. Smith. Millions of TV viewers know his face-and the shock of unruly blond ponytail that was always falling across it-from his tenure stint of fronting the Saturday Night Live Band. Smith was hired to play lead guitar for Hall and Oates, he stayed for six years (1979-1985) constantly touring and recording with them, racking up hit after hit. Smith toured for almost four years with the legendary Bob Dylan. Smith was also honored to be the musical director for special events such as the 1988 Emmy Awards, the 1993 Rhythm and Blues Foundation Awards and the Bob Dylan 30th Anniversary Concert at Madison Square Garden. The latter event was another of those “fantasy situations” that G.E. keeps getting involved in. “The rehearsals for that Dylan concert you wouldn't believe. I was rehearsing with George Harrison in the morning, Eric Clapton in the afternoon, and Lou Reed at night. One afternoon, rehearsing the finale, I had Harrison, Tom Petty, Clapton, Neil Young, Dylan and Roger McGuinn all lined up. GE also joined Roger Waters 2010 WALL LIVE toured the world three times and toured with him for seven years. In 2015, GE returned to SNL where he received an EMMY award as bandleader, for the 40th SNL anniversary special. In 2015, GE and wife, Taylor Barton, started an exciting project called PORTRAITS, which hosts a rotating roster of acclaimed musicians and artists from all realms for a deeper look at what drives them creatively. A lot of aspects of the Jewish Mother stereotype are inaccurate and even mean-spirited, but Lauren's grown sons reminded her that this cliche definitely still holds true - Jewish mothers tell their kids it's time to leave a party or gathering, and the kids know that means they've got at least two more hours.

Two Old Bitches: Stories from Women who Reimagine, Reinvent and Rebel
As soon as we learned we landed an interview with Judy Gold, stellar comedian, actor and writer, Two Old Bitches started grinning and giggling. What a coup! Once we actually began talking with her, we laughed out loud, and often, at her insightful zingers. Judy, whose comedic heroes are Joan Rivers and Phyllis Diller, makes you laugh, and think. Approaching 60, her many credits include: countless stand-up comedy performances; two Emmys for her work as a writer and producer on The Rosie O'Donnell Show; two off-Broadway shows, “The Judy Show: My Life as a Sitcom” and “25 Questions for a Jewish Mother;” two books, “Yes I Can Say That: When They Come for the Comedians We're All in Trouble” and “25 Questions for a Jewish Mother;” a weekly podcast, “Kill Me Now;” and roles on television series from the more recent Better Things to Madame Secretary, 30 Rock, Law & Order, Ugly Betty” and “Sex and the City.” Why doesn't Judy Gold have her own series? It's past time, Hollywood! In the meantime, for a much needed dose of her edgy humor, listen to this funny episode. (Special thanks to literary agent and Screen Bitch Malaga Baldi for putting us in touch with Judy.)

Extra Points with Cousin Sal, Dave Dameshek & Charlotte Wilder
Cousin Sal, Martin, and Dave discuss the Tuesday night games as once again we see terrible officiating; Martin has a theory on why the officials have been so bad. The guys recap the Jimmy Kimmel Bowl/Holiday party as Martin brings up Dave's huge party foul and his disgusting habits. Sal then had his own dilemma with the leftovers as his ‘Jewish Mother' kicked in and he had to scramble to save the sandwiches. Shek and Martin discuss their Jonathan Taylor MVP bet, Martin still doesn't think it will happen but admits he's getting nervous. Sal thinks Cooper Kupp and Jonathan Taylor may cancel each other's votes out and hurt their MVP chances. Next, it's a breakdown of all the big NFL Week 16 games including the Arizona Cardinals trying to bounce back against Jonathan Taylor and the surging Colts. As well as, Browns @ Packers, Steelers @ Chiefs, Ravens @ Bengals, Bills @ Patriots and 49ers @ Titans. Dave compares people who are upset Tampa Bay would welcome back Antonio Brown and Le'Veon Bell to the Spider-Man meme. Plus, a look at the NBA Christmas games, NHL players skipping the Olympics and Megan Gailey gets Megan Connolly in trouble after she pays off the punishment in their Patriots/Colts bet.

Once again, I hit the streets to join my fellow Jews in standing up and showing our Arab neighbors that their terror does not scare us. This time it was in response to the recent stabbing of a young mother who was walking her kids to school. She was stabbed by a 14-year-old girl, who is her neighbor! Join me as I walk the streets of the Eastern Jerusalem neighborhood near where it happened.

Author and journalist Sara Davidson is an award-winning storyteller, and she says she learned that skill from her mother Alice. Every night before bed, Alice would tell Sara and her sister the next installment in a serial story about a miniature girl named P Winky Smith who was so small she could fit in your pocket. But that doesn't mean their relationship was idyllic by any stretch. For Sara, there were high highs and low lows in her childhood. Her mother was funny and once had dreams of being a comedic actress (she also had one of the first nose jobs in L.A.!) but she could also be derisive, mean and stubborn.Alice then developed dementia, and for Sara this was the first time she could truly love her mother, in part because ailing Alice had forgotten many of the things they had fought about.Together, Sara and Katie talk about dashed dreams, nose jobs, and the challenges of growing up with such a complicated mother, especially Alice Davidson, who was known as the “send-back queen” because she never settled for a dish that wasn't perfectly prepared in a restaurant.Artwork by Paula Mangin (@PaulaBallah)Music composed and performed by Andrea PerryProducers: Alice Hudson, Claire TrageserSocial Media: Ilana NevinsSpecial thanks to Sarge, for permission to use the clip from his routine about the beleaguered Jewish husband.Mother Word Cloud: Please contribute the one word that best describes your mother to the Mother Word Cloud at www.ourmothersourselves.comNote: Our sister podcast, Mother Mine, has moved to a separate feed. Read more and view photos on my website.Lisa Schroeder is executive chef and owner of Mother's Bistro & Bar. She is a mother, grandmother, chef, restaurateur and author devoted to providing better-than-authentic renditions of traditional home-cooked dishes at her popular, award-winning restaurant. Mother's has grown over the years from a charming 90-seat restaurant on Stark Street to a gorgeous 200-seat Portland institution in the Embassy Suites by Hilton Hotel. Chosen Restaurant of the Year by Portland's Willamette Week; Best Comfort Food, Best Brunch, and Best Lunch Spot by numerous publications; and one of America's Top Restaurant Bargains by Food and Wine, Mother's Bistro & Bar is a destination spot for Portland.Mother's was not an overnight success, even though it opened to rave reviews. Back in 1992, while juggling a marketing career and raising her daughter, Lisa realized no restaurants were making comfort food. She dreamed of a place that would serve “Mother Food” – slow-cooked dishes made with love. Lisa was determined to open such a restaurant and spent the next eight years working toward that dream. She enrolled at The Culinary Institute of America, where she was selected as one of the Top Ten Student Chefs in America by Food and Wine. After graduating with honors, she continued honing her skills at two four-star restaurants, Lespinasse and Le Cirque. Her education continued in Provence, France at Roger Verge's Moulin des Mougins and at Mark Veyrat's L'Auberge de L'Eridan in Haute Savoie. At one point she was working 90 hours a week in two jobs, as a chef and a waiter, so she could afford to live in New York City. While working all over Europe, she realized the only way to truly understand regional cuisine was to go into the homes where mothers cooked. When she met her husband, Rob Sample, she relocated to Portland and continued planning her restaurant. She opened Mother's in 2000. The first year she received “Restaurant of the Year” award from Willamette Week. “Mother's serves home cooking from mothers around the world, and each month we feature the cuisine of a different mother...I wanted to have motherly staples, pot roast, chicken and dumplings, meatloaf and matzo ball soup, chopped liver, pierogis. So basically, if a mother would make it, we would serve it.”Lisa has been providing health benefits for her staff from day one, way before Obamacare. She also provides vacation and a 401K with a 3 percent match. Lisa read about the pandemic and began to make preparations for providing takeout food. But after staying open became untenable, on June 5, 2020, she made the decision to close the restaurant. Even though they were closed for over a year, most of her staff has returned as they've reopened.I asked Lisa what it's like to be a woman in the food industry. “Everybody doubts you. They think you're not capable. You won't be able to lift...you always start from a disadvantaged position where people have preconceived notions about your abilities, and then, especially working in four-star kitchens as an older woman in my 30s."We also spoke about the future of downtown Portland (it's coming back!), her philosophy of sustainable food systems (like a good mother, she lets nothing go to waste!), how she gives back to her community.I asked Lisa what advice she has for people who want to create companies that care.“Well, you have to care...be a human being and don't treat your people like a number, or that they're disposable or replaceable. Cherish each one and what they can bring to the company and the cause…Treat people with humanity…if you treat people well, they will respect you and treat you well…you'll get their devotion and loyalty.”

Meet us and hear about our plans for NYJM (Not Your Jewish Mother)...
The young virgin Mary displayed a remarkable knowledge of God's covenants with Israel. Mary was a prophetess and theologian worthy to mentor the Messian, as revealed in her very Jewish Magnificat. It's no wonder God chose her- Mary's words were saturated with Hebrew Scripture.
She's a sort of "peace incarnate". A representation of what comes of abandoning hate and sectarianism for love and unity. Mai Shbeta is the daughter of a Jewish Mother and Muslim father. According to Jewish religious law, she's a Jew. According to Islam, she's a Muslim. However, often the members of both faiths choose to see her as an outside - they see the differences rather than the similarities. This reality has driven Mai Shbeta to spend her time working diligently towards peace. She's presented at the World Economic forum in Davos in 2011 and, recently completing a law degree at the Bar Ilan University, she has her eyes set on the advancement of Human Rights. Mai joins 2NJB today to talk about her life and career.
Christine Darg says Mary was re-invented by the church, but Scriptures paint her as the quintessential and dutiful Jewish mother extraordinaire!
