This week on Saturday Night Jive we watched Thomas And The Magic Railroad from 2000 starring 17-time SNL host Alec Baldwin as Mr. Conductor. So this was a huge mistake. Turns out this movie isn't interested in helping you understand what the hell is going on so we spend the majority of the podcast simply confused by the lore of magical trains who don't move their mouths when they talk. We also had no idea this was related to Shining Time Station starring George Carlin and Ringo Starr as Mr. Conductor, we thought that was a different thing. It could be a totally different thing, this could have nothing to do with anything, we have no clue and the movie doesn't seem to either. Help us construct this 1,000 shit puzzle as this is the most perplexing movie we've watched since Southland Tales. Kevin Roth's journey into the world of folk music began at the tender age of thirteen when he first picked up the dulcimer. Little did he know that this humble beginning would lead to a remarkable career filled with international acclaim. By the age of sixteen, Roth had already recorded his debut album for Folkways / Smithsonian Folkways Records, marking the start of his meteoric rise to fame. Over the next decade, he solidified his place as a prominent folk singer and dulcimer player, recording a total of ten albums with the label. Notably, his performance of the theme song for the PBS-TV children's show Shining Time Station in 1984 catapulted him into a much larger market, expanding his reach and influence. Collaborating with Noel Paul Stookey of Peter, Paul & Mary further entrenched Roth in American folk history, cementing his legacy as a musician who has graced concert stages worldwide, appeared at prestigious events such as the White House, and left an indelible mark on the world of folk music. It's 1989 and George Harrison is still riding high on the success of the debut Traveling Wilburys LP! Of all the former Beatles, Harrison's late-80s resurgence resonated with near-universal public and critical acclaim, and the momentum of successful collaboration between George and producer Jeff Lynne showed no signs of slowing down. Also on an upturn in the early weeks of the year was Ringo Starr, whose newfound sobriety triggered an abundance of activity -- from starring in the PBS children's television show Shining Time Station (as the unflappable Mr. Conductor) to a collection of recent selections dubbed Star Struck: The Best of Ringo Starr vol2. Meanwhile, the release of the LP Spike by Elvis Costello heralded the coming of newly co-written material with Paul McCartney - material destined for McCartney's own resurgence in the months to come... George Denis Patrick Carlin (May 12, 1937 – June 22, 2008) was an American comedian, actor, author, and social critic. Regarded as one of the most important and influential stand-up comedians of all time, he was dubbed "the dean of counterculture comedians". He was known for his black comedy and reflections on politics, the English language, psychology, religion, and taboo subjects. Carlin was a frequent performer and guest host on The Tonight Show during the three-decade Johnny Carson era and hosted the first episode of Saturday Night Live in 1975. The first of Carlin's 14 stand-up comedy specials for HBO was filmed in 1977, broadcast as George Carlin at USC. From the late 1980s onwards, his routines focused on sociocultural criticism of American society. He often commented on American political issues and satirized American culture. His "seven dirty words" routine was central to the 1978 United States Supreme Court case F.C.C. v. Pacifica Foundation, in which a 5–4 decision affirmed the government's power to censor indecent material on public airwaves. Carlin released his first solo album Take-Offs and Put-Ons in 1966. He went on to receive five Grammy Awards for Best Comedy Album winning for FM & AM (1972), Jammin' in New York (1992), Brain Droppings (2001), Napalm & Silly Putty (2002), and It's Bad for Ya (2008). The latter was his final comedy special, which was filmed less than four months before his death from cardiac failure. Carlin co-created and starred in the Fox sitcom The George Carlin Show (1994–1995). He is also known for his film performances in Car Wash (1976), Outrageous Fortune (1987), Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure (1989), Bill & Ted's Bogus Journey (1991), The Prince of Tides (1991), Dogma (1999), Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back (2001), Scary Movie 3 (2003), and Jersey Girl (2004). He also had voice roles as Zugor in Tarzan II, Fillmore in Cars (2006), and as Mr. Conductor on Shining Time Station, as well as narrating the American dubs of Thomas & Friends. Carlin was posthumously awarded the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor in 2008. He placed second on Comedy Central's list of top 10 American comedians in 2004,[1] while Rolling Stone magazine ranked him second on its list of the 50 best stand-up comedians of all time in 2017, in both cases behind Richard Pryor.[2] PICTURE: By Little David Records - eBay, Public Domain, https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?curid=89393798 --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/thequeensnewyorker/message

Kevin Roth began to play the dulcimer in 1972 at the age of thirteen and is now known for his dulcimer music for meditation. Back at age sixteen, he recorded his first album which immediately launched him into international fame. Between 1974 and 1984, Roth recorded ten albums, establishing himself as a prominent folk singer and dulcimer player. In 1984, Roth performed the theme to the PBS-TV children's show Shining Time Station. That project brought him to another new and much larger market. His friendship and collaboration in 2006 with Noel Paul Stookey, of the legendary folk trio Peter, Paul & Mary, further cemented Roth in American folk history. His career took him to concert and symphony stages around the world, to festivals, radio, television shows, and two appearances at the White House. Roth now guides individuals and groups in discovering what truly matters to them, how to accomplish their goals, and how handling stress is an essential factor in a healthy life. He mentioned how normal feelings like anger and frustration come up for everyone, but he doesn't let them control him. He compares these feelings to bubbles that pop quickly. He believes that these feelings aren't real and that he doesn't need to get stuck in them. Kevin explained that when people believe their thoughts, they can suffer, even in simple situations like waiting in line for coffee. He gave an example of someone cutting in line. He pointed out that maybe they're just waiting for coffee and not intentionally trying to skip the line. Mindfulness, according to Kevin, is recognizing that these thoughts come and go, and we don't have to give them too much importance. Thoughts might be there one moment and gone the next. He shared a story about a person who disliked her boss and had to talk to her on the computer for a short time every Monday. Kevin helped her realize that she only spent a small part of her workweek dealing with her boss, but she was carrying negative feelings about her all the time. Kevin found it surprising how we do these things without even realizing it. He believes that mindfulness can help us become aware of our thoughts and emotions and not let them control our feelings and actions. Thoughts on Breathing My advice is to just keep breathing; just keep doing it. I don't do any breathwork because I don't personally need it. Kevin Roth had a life-changing epiphany, packed up and moved to an idyllic place on the beach, and hung out a shingle calling himself a life coach. Oh, you say you've heard this story before? Wait, hear me out. Kevin was a prominent folk singer who played with Noel Paul Stookey of Peter, Paul, and Mary, and wrote the theme song for the PBS children's show, Shining Time Station. He recorded more than a dozen albums, and performed at the White House and at festivals all over the world. Then came a diagnosis of stage 3 melanoma and being told he had only a few years to live. Kevin stubbornly took control of his own treatment and has come out successfully on the other side. It taught him how to truly thrive in his life. Part of that was moving from Kansas to San Diego. I think that would improve anyone's outlook, you know? Kevin found and now teaches ways to remove and replace the negatives in his and others' lives – similar to the lessons espoused by our friends at Addict to Athlete. Kevin's vehicle though is music. Kevin learned to play the dulcimer, a stringed instrument with a very peaceful, melodic sound. It has a very strong de-stressing effect and he has an intriguing program with it called dulcimeditation. Kevin works with clients one-on-one to help them change their lives in amazing ways. He also does group sessions, seminars, and he offers on his Web site a Teachable Course called Creating a Life of Meaning and Abundance. I think you'll hear in our conversation that Kevin is just a down-to-Earth guy very much at peace and wanting to share with others his methods of de-stressing, and enabling them to better goal-set and re-direct their trajectories so they can enjoy a more fulfilling life experience. I know that may sound like a bunch of hippie mumbo-jumbo, but he comes across as the kind of guy you could meet one day at the bar and realize you've walked away a lot richer for having had the experience. When I listen to many speeches, seminars, Ted Talks, etc., I always hope to walk away with that one golden nugget. I think that if you pay close attention to Kevin here, you'll likely gain several that will inspire you. Please consider donating to help Boulder County fire victims relief:https://www.commfound.org/grants/get-grant/Boulder-County-Wildfire-FundKevin Rothkevinroth.org@gmail.com619-794-8599www.kevinroth.orgwww.kevinrothmusic.comInstagram @happysoulsurfer_kevinrothBill Stahlsilly_billy@msn.comFacebook Bill StahlInstagram @stahlor
In this episode, we welcome guest and musical artist Kevin Roth. He shares his story of how he was diagnosed with stage-three melanoma in 2016 and was told that he had just a few years left to live. He openly shares how he navigated his diagnosis and ultimately discovered what matters most in his life. Now thriving, he teaches others how to play the Dulcimer in a mindfulness practice coined as "Dulcimeditation". You can learn more at kevinroth.org and listen to his 50 musical albums on Spotify, including his Dulcimeditation album. "Kevin Roth began to play the dulcimer in 1972 at the old age of thirteen, and at sixteen recorded his first album for Folkways / Smithsonian Folkways Records, which immediately launched him into international fame. Between 1974 and 1984 Roth recorded ten albums with this label, establishing himself as a prominent folk singer and dulcimer player. In 1984, Roth performed the theme to the PBS-TV children's show Shining Time Station, which brought him to another new and much larger market. His friendship and collaboration in 2006 with Noel Paul Stookey, of the legendary folk trio Peter, Paul & Mary, further cemented Roth in American folk history. His career took him to a concert and symphony stages around the world, to festivals, radio, television shows, and two appearances at the White House." It seems Dave found the mailbox from The Lake House, and the writers of this show were on the other end, because they've fulfilled his deepest wishes 17 years before he even knew about them. We also made Shining Time Station real weird.

Carlin was most closely identified with the monologue “Seven Words You Can Never Say on Television,” in which he satirically analyzed the use and misuse of seven of the raunchiest obscenities in the English language. Carlin was arrested in 1972 for performing the monologue onstage, but a judge dismissed the case. In 1973 New York City radio station WBAI-FM triggered a lawsuit by the FCC after it aired a recorded version of the routine called “Filthy Words.” The landmark “Carlin case” was finally settled in 1978 by the U.S. Supreme Court: in a 5–4 ruling, it gave the FCC the ability to censor offensive content in radio and TV broadcasts.Carlin released more than 20 comedy albums and starred in 14 HBO television specials. As an actor, he usually played a character inspired by his own comic persona (as in the short-lived situation comedy The George Carlin Show [1994]), with the notable exception of his stint in the 1990s as the amiable narrator (and onscreen host, Mr. Conductor) of the children's programs Thomas the Tank Engine and Friends and Shining Time Station. Carlin was honoured with the American Comedy Awards' Lifetime Achievement Award (2001) and the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor (2008). In 2004 the cable television network Comedy Central ranked Carlin second on its list of the “100 Greatest Stand-Ups of All Time,” behind African American actor-comedian Richard Pryor and just ahead of the legendary Lenny Bruce. His final HBO special, It's Bad for Ya, aired just months before his death, and it won the Grammy Award for best comedy album in 2009. His memoir, Last Words, was published later that year. From: https://www.britannica.com/biography/George-Carlin.For more information about George Carlin:Previously on The Quarantine Tapes:Andy Borowitz about Carlin, at 20:25: https://quarantine-tapes.simplecast.com/episodes/the-quarantine-tapes-152-andy-borowitz“Jon Stewart Interviews George Carlin”: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nCGGWeD_EJk“The Station That Dared to Defend Carlin's ‘Seven Words' Looks Back”: https://www.nytimes.com/2008/06/25/nyregion/25wbai.html

Hey Cassettes! We're back with another episode of The Black Case Diaries! After our five-week long discussion about the Disney Princesses, we switched gears to talk about PBS Children's shows! This channel as taught, comforted, and amused us for so many years, we felt we should talk about it! Come on and ZOOM on over to 123 Sesame Street. We're not quite sure how to get there, but we think it's somewhere between Mr. Rogers' Neighborhood and Elwood City. If we hurry, we can catch a train at Shining Time Station! As always, Thanks for listening!
Composer Steve Horelick is definitely best known for his work on children's television programs like Shining Time Station and Reading Rainbow, the latter of which he composed the iconic theme song for. However, early on in his career, Horelick worked on the 1981 slasher film, Madman, a movie made somewhat infamous by the fact that it shares a similar storyline with the contemporaneous The Burning. Madman was released on Blu-ray back in 2015 via Vinegar Syndrome, and while there was an announcement at the time that Death Waltz would be releasing the score, here we are over three years later with nothing yet. Thankfully, the composer was more than willing to share his story of the score, as well as his illustrious career.
Continuing on with the theme of the co-hosts’ favorite childhood show, we discuss Eric’s favorite show: Shining Time Station. From the backstory of its history to whether it holds up today, this magical discussion about Thomas’s American debut features personal stories of how Eric and Rico were impacted by this show. All aboard!
Justin recalls the 48-hour stretch when he believed in ghosts. Chris and Justin discuss the horrors of Thomas the Tank Engine. The single most unsettling story from their hometown is told, then some more messed up cartoon stuff: Ren and Stimpy, Rocko’s Modern Life, etc. Chris tries to talk Justin into matching “Shining Time Station” tattoos again.
On today's episode I talk to Wayne White. Born and raised in Chattanooga, Wayne is an artist, art director, illustrator, puppeteer, and much, much more. After graduating from Middle Tennessee State University, Wayne traveled to New York City where he worked as an illustrator for the East Village Eye, New York Times, Raw Magazine, and the Village Voice. In 1986, Wayne became a designer for the hit television show Pee-wee’s Playhouse, and his work was awarded with three Emmys. After traveling to Los Angeles, Wayne continued to work in television and designed sets and characters for shows such as Shining Time Station, Beakman’s World, Riders In The Sky, and Bill & Willis. He also worked in the music video industry, winning Billboard and MTV Music Video Awards as an art director for seminal music videos including The Smashing Pumpkins' 'Tonight, Tonight' and Peter Gabriel's 'Big Time.' More recently, Wayne has had great success as a fine artist and has created paintings and public works that have been shown all over the world, and in 2009, Wayne's life and career were chronicled in an incredible 382-page monograph, edited by Todd Oldham. This is the website for Beginnings, subscribe on Apple Podcasts, follow me on Twitter.

All aboard for an episode of trainspotting, hobos and lamenting the loss of the bar car. James and Emily raise their glasses to one of the greatest marvels of transportation and, dare we say it, a highlight of our daily commute. This episode's wine: Double Dog Dare Cabernet (We're still in shock it was only $3)This episode's cheese: Cabot white cheddar In this episode, James professes his child-like love for train travel and gives reasons why commuting by train is the best, including being environmentally friendly without being pretentious, plus learn about his tips to avoid paying the fare. Emily complains about Ryan Gosling's ticket-taker doppelganger, who is drunk on his own power, then we get sidetracked talking about how Brad Pitt has Prosopagnosia (face blindness), so more girls should just go up to him and convince him they're Angelina Jolie. We drop our podcast voices to showcase our actual Connecticut accents to talk about Metro North, and we lament the last bar car in the United States. Emily gives James the job of catching a fly since he hasn't read any of the Harry Potter books (shame mail for James can be sent to classypodcast@gmail.com) and Harry Potter fans can geek out with her as she talks about Platform 9 3/4 at King's Cross Station. We talk about A queen of England, but not THE queen, unfortunately. We also sympathize with those who have to commute daily from King's Cross, especially if their trains are on Platforms 9 or 10. While we don't get into the book or movie, "Trainspotting," we do talk about those who trainspot as a hobby, known as railfans. We dive into the different types, from those who record different trains, to those who ride a particular train route, to those who explore abandoned train stations. We also look at the connection between children with autism and the fascination with trains. James talks about the psychology of train etiquette and the dynamic of ignoring the same people you see every day. (We didn't even acknowledge the fact that this may even be a Northeastern thing, because once you leave this area of the country, people are much friendlier.) James decides to throw a party for his anonymous train friends and talks about the social dynamics of train seating. He also benefits from the remnants of racism still prevalent in Connecticut, and Emily tells the story of the one time James embarrassed her on the train and why they don't take the train together anymore. James also scolds Emily for succumbing to click bait and forbids her from the Internet. But, then again, he never gives up the chance to talk about his penis. Yes, somehow we work this tangent into train research. Emily gets the songs "Cocaine" and "Casey Jones" confused as James tells the story of the real Casey Jones -- not the be confused with Stacy Jones from the original "Shining Time Station." Emily talks about Ticket to Ride, Wil Wheaton's Tabletop web show, and James asks for FDA-approved hookers when we talk about how John Lennon may or may not have lovingly called the street women of Hamburg Tickets to Ride. Emily talks about Ticket to Ride, Wil Wheaton's Tabletop web show, and James asks for FDA-approved hookers when we talk about how John Lennon may or may not have lovingly called the street women of Hamburg Tickets to Ride. Somehow, we get on the subject of the evolution of the poop train and the old Pace salsa commercials. For more information, check out RadioLab's episode all about the Poop Train. Finally, James gets a chance to expound upon his love of hobos, and we introduce you to one of our favorite time-passing games we used to play when we worked together, "What's in Your Bindle?" James also gets a dreamy look in his eyes as he talks about his desire to ride in a freight train with his legs dangling over the side, exploring the country. Special Thanks Lots of shout-outs this week! Thanks, everyone! Cheers to Matt from Arrested DevOps for including us as one of his picks of the week, Bum Wine Bob from Bumming with Bobcat for featuring our Classy Sangria recipe, and Rob & Elsie from Libsyn's "The Feed" for playing our promo! Special thanks to Adam Centamore for his book, "Tasting Wine and Cheese: An Insider's Guide to Mastering the Principles of Pairing" Tasting Wine & Cheese," which we'll be using for our wine and cheese pairing for the next few episodes! You can follow Adam on Twitter @100loves and ask him for wine pairing suggestions, and we've loved all the help he's given us!
