Host: Drifter Guest: Dave Davis Bio: Database Programmer/Data Scientist by day. Husband, Father, Musician, Photographer, Artist, Internet DJ, Astrologer, Designer and Writer by night. Born and raised in Iowa, moved to Illinois in the 80s to go to DeVry. That's when the drinking started. You go to college; you hang out with certain people and you get drunk and stoned. Plain and simple. We had 4 roommates when we stayed in DeVry Housing back then. We had one drug dealer move in when one would move out. If it wasn't free, it was cheap. Most of them were old enough to get us booze as well. I've been in various heavy metal bands since high school in the late 70s, all the way up till 2014. Bass, Keyboards, Singing and Guitar. Many drunken blacked out nights back then. In the early 90s I quit drinking as much, but when I got divorced from my first marriage, I was alone and I didn't like being alone with myself, so I turned to wine. 2 to 3 bottles a day. I was an independent IT consultant at the time and always stressed out. So, you can imagine how sloshed I get and blackout. I quit cold turkey in 1995 when I joined a Blues Brothers act right after my father died from pancreatic cancer. I did that for 5 years and had heart palpitations the last night I was dancing. I was Jake. I smoked like Jake. 2 packs of Marlboro Reds a day, then 2 packs of American Spirits. I jumped back into a band in 2002 with a friend from work. The drinking and the smoking came back at that time. In 2005, I met my wife. I stopped drinking. I wanted to set an example for her boys. They were 10 and 13 and soon to become my stepsons. Although I always refer to them as my sons, because their dad was not present in their lives as much. We married in 2006 and moved into a rental house in 2008. Right before we moved into that house, we both quit smoking and haven't had a cigarette since June 28th, 2008. At that time, I introduced my wife to wine, and as we now say, the rest is history. We crept up in volume and quantity over the years. I got to the point where before the pandemic I was drinking 2 to 2 ½ bottles of wine a night. When the pandemic hit, everything was uncertain, my drinking got even worse. I could polish off an entire Black Box of Pinot Noir in one night. That's 4 bottles of wine. Blackouts returned. Falling out of bed and hitting my head on the nightstand or falling out of my chair at my desk while I was doing radio shows, was a common occurrence. I joined IAS in 2022 to get sober. I hit that reset button like a snooze alarm almost daily if not weekly. I was proud of myself that I hit 20 days and then relapsed that night. Finally, my health was taking the worst hit in March of 2023 and I set my quit day on the first day of Spring 3/20/2023. This time I leaned into the community on IAS, where I found out about Sobertown Podcast. I started to dig around the website and found Rewired. I had already done a 30-day stint (that was part of the 20 days) with This Naked Mind back in 2022. Rewired; that was different. This was my jam and I felt at home. Sobertown had a Zoom meeting that was based on Erica Spiegelman's book, so I jumped on one, one day and felt right at home. I'm over 200+ days now. I feel better than I've felt in years and I'm going after goals that I threw away years ago. I'm dropping weight (down from 354 pounds to 315 pound in six months), I'm more focused and I feel more present every day. I leaned into Zoom, IAS, Discord and Telegram communities and it feels awesome to be able to help when I can. Sobertown Podcast has been an excellent source for tools that helped me with working my own personal program, one day at a time. I'm not an AA person, but I do not judge people who are following that path. This site has opened my eyes to other possibilities, and I am so grateful they are here. Testimonial: Sobertown Podcast is one of the BEST resources for finding your own path or building your own adventure in sobriety. They provided the tools and support I was looking for in the beginning of my journey and they continue to do so as I walk my path. Forever grateful for these guys being here. C'est dans une optique de prévention des accidents et de maintien du bien-être du chien, que j'ai réalisé ce nouvel épisode. October 27, 2022, we hosted a panel of global experts about food insecurity and the Global Food Crisis. Hundreds of sponsors, members, and guests joined us in person while dozens joined the livestream as moderator Devry Boughner Vorwerk led a discussion with Peter Ceretti of Eurasia Group, Ambassador Ertharin Cousin, and former Secretary of Agriculture, Dan Glickman. The audience learned where things stand today with global, national, and local food insecurity. The panelists talked about how humanitarian efforts are funded and how the investment in global hunger is growing. The discussion helped to inform how companies, not just food companies, can address hunger issues. Ambassador Cousin made a very important statement, “There has never been a famine in a country where there was a functioning democracy.” Devry also introduced HUNGHRI, a 501c3 formed to address hunger from the heartland.

In this dynamic Nomad Futurist podcast, Dean Nelson, an alum of Sun Microsystems, eBay and Uber, and Founder and Chairman of Infrastructure Masons, shares his immense enthusiasm for the digital infrastructure industry that serves as the fundamental underpinning of our modern world. After a brief stint doing temp work out of high school, Nelson got an associate's degree in electronics from DeVry. He was recruited to work for Sun Microsystems where he learned technology, business, strategy and people management. Nelson references his exposure to all the varied areas of technology as “attending the University of Sun,” a fundamental on-the-job training that launched his career. He stresses the need for this kind of exposure. “I think that one thing we lack in our industry right now, actually across the world, is apprenticeships. If we offered apprenticeships today to people to truly learn a trade like this, it would accelerate everything.” Nelson is deeply committed to communicating the value and opportunities offered by the data center industry to those who may not understand how core IT is to our everyday world. “There is every discipline inside of digital infrastructure; planning, accounting, supply chain orchestration, fault management…even HR planning, everything can be tied together.” Nelson discusses the importance of communicating the real-world applicability of the digital infrastructure space in a way that is simple and relevant to people who may not be aware of it. “The problem is we don't have our education systems lined up to be able to say that this industry, digital infrastructure specifically, is an incredibly rewarding career.” Nelson shares his excitement about some of the newest advances in the tech space. He asserts the inevitability of self-driving and even flying cars. He does express concern about the possible abuses that may arise from audio and video deep fakes made possible by virtual reality technology. But Nelson is ultimately optimistic about the Digital Infrastructure industry leading the way in terms of environmental and sustainability issues because of the involvement of some of the biggest players in the space. He is hopeful that self-regulation can be the answer as it was for PUE standards. His message to the young: “This industry has an incredibly important purpose. We connect the world…We enable opportunity everywhere. Wouldn't you like to be in the fastest growing industry in the world?” Dean Nelson is a seasoned technology executive with 32 years of experience deploying $10B of digital infrastructure projects across 3 continents. Nelson is currently the CEO of Cato Digital, Inc, a software platform that unlocks stranded power in datacenters, the Founder and Chairman of Infrastructure Masons, a professional association of industry executives and technology professionals uniting the builders of the digital age, and the Founder and CEO of Dean Nelson Inc, a strategic advisory and consulting company serving startups, fortune 500 companies and investment firms. Previously, Nelson led Uber's Metal as a Service function supporting Uber's ridesharing business delivering over 100 million trips a week globally, as well as UberEats, UberFreight, UberHealth, UberForBusiness, and Autonomous vehicle and UberAir development. Prior to Uber, Nelson worked at eBay Inc for 7 years as the VP of Global Foundation Services, which served over 300 million users, enabling over $250B of commerce volume annually. Prior to eBay, he worked at Sun Microsystems for 17 years in various technical, management and executive leadership roles. Nelson's final Sun project was the consolidation of their multi-billion-dollar global technical infrastructure portfolio of over 1,000 facilities. Dean holds four US patents.

I'm excited to introduce this week's guest, Robert Bendetti. Last year, he hiked through the Grand Canyon from the south rim to the north rim and back to the south rim (also known as the Rim2Rim2Rim). The route he took was 50 miles in length, with 22,000 feet (6,705 meters) of elevation change. He did this solo and unsupported in just 23 hours, on a day that reached 110 degrees Fahrenheit (43 degrees Celsius). I'm not great with heat, so I'm not sure if I'll ever make it over to Arizona to hike the Rim2Rim2Rim. But I've seen videos of it, and the route looks absolutely gorgeous. If you want to get an idea of what it looks like, check out the links below for a video. About Robert Bendetti Husband, father, hiker, and ultra-runner (ok, more like ultra-jogger). How are colleges and universities going about rethinking their teaching and learning strategies in the wake of widescale experimentation with digital instruction? This week's episode is the last of a three-part series on digital teaching and learning, supported by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. The first two episodes explored how the COVID-19 pandemic reshaped what researchers and practitioners know about the role of technology in learning, and how well the hundreds of ed-tech companies that work with colleges, professors and students meet the needs of the institutions and their people and what they can do better. In this week's episode, we look more closely at how individual colleges and universities are rethinking the role of digital learning. Dhanfu E. Elston, chief of staff and senior vice president for strategy at Complete College America, discusses an effort involving six historically black colleges and universities. Then we hear administrators from Arizona State, DeVry and Yale Universities describe the work they're doing to evolve their strategies for using digital tools and approaches in instruction. Hosted by Inside Higher Ed Editor Doug Lederman. This episode was made possible by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.

Today's episode – No, is my favorite word! I know you've been told no before! It all starts when we were kids. As a form of protection your parents and mine have all said – NO! Don't touch that hot stove! You'll burn yourself! NO! Don't run out into the street – you'll get hit by a car. No! you can't have another cookie; it will spoil your dinner. Do you realize how many Nos we heard before we could actually start making our own decisions? Do you know it only takes repeating something 21 times to become a habit? By the age of 5, all we know is NO. Decision making in my household started very young. We had to be up early to do cow chores, trapping in the winter and then off to school. After school, more chores, dinner, homework and go to bed – rinse and repeat. This rinse and repeat process created discipline. I remember the first time I was told no by someone other than my parents. I was a junior in high school when DeVry Institute of Technology came to my school and did a presentation. The presentation just drew me in, it was something about technology that just got me to thinking I wanted to learn more about this school and what I could learn. I went home and gave my mom and dad the spiel about this school along with the literature they gave me, and I told them, that I was really interested in this school. Here's the cool thing about my mom and dad – they never discouraged or encouraged any of us to do anything. They allowed us to pick our own paths in life. There's only time, I remember calling home in Junior High and asking my mom if I could be a cheerleader and she told me no. She was right – I wasn't cut out to be a cheerleader, I became a very physical basketball player in high school. I was thankful years later for her decision. The next steps were to go talk with our school guidance counselor. I made the appointment and met with Gary. Now, I was a Junior in high school and meeting anyone of the teachers or admin was always intimidating, this meeting was no different. I explained to Gary that I would like to know more about DeVry Institute of Technology as I really enjoyed the presentation. I remember the meeting going something like this. “Mechiel, I don't think you're cut out for a school like that.” Now, I have to assume that because this was a technical school – The bachelor's program was a Bachelor of Science degree or in layman's terms – I would become a developer or write code - he didn't feel that the classes I had already taken would lead me down this path. It was a 2 year and 8-month Bachelor program carrying 21 credits a trimester and no summer's off. I didn't have to take the non-essential business classes that the 4-year colleges made you take. In my mind, I was like so? It just meant to me I'd graduate much earlier than the 4-year colleges and I'd be in the workforce much earlier. I was an A student with some B's mixed in. I didn't understand why he wouldn't support it. I walked out of his office very disappointed. I went home and told mom and dad that Gary wouldn't support me going to DeVry but that's where I wanted to go! Several days went by when mom and dad told me that a guy from DeVry was coming by the house and that I needed to be ready for him. I didn't know what that meant, but we sat at the kitchen table with this guy for 3 hours as he explained in more detail about the school and how it worked. He then made me read 3 paragraphs to him out loud. Then he started asking me questions about the 3 paragraphs, like he never heard a word I said. I became frustrated and I said to him, “Did you not hear anything I just read to you?” He started laughing out loud. Well, I wasn't laughing, and I rolled my eyes! He then explained that I had passed his test. He said, he stays 3 hours on purpose to test my patience and then he tested my comprehension by asking questions about the story I read to him. He told me, it's on purpose because over ¾ of the kids that sign up for this school will quit and they had tied it back to comprehension, so they try to weed them out before they even start school. So evidently, mom or dad – not sure which had done a little damage control with Gary and scheduled this appointment with DeVry. Now Gary was making more sense to me, but I was still determined that I wanted to go to DeVry. Back then it wasn't as glamorous as going to the University of Iowa – but I wanted to go to school to learn not party! In the fall of 1982 – dad hauled me to Kansas City in a horse trailer and 2.8 years later I graduated with a bachelor's degree in Computer Information Systems. I would tell you that it was NOT fun, it was a lot of hard work and at the 2.4-year mark I was ready to call it quits at the Associates degree – I even called home crying and mom and dad both said NO, you're not quitting and you're not coming home! The guy from DeVry was right we started with over 1000 kids and only 250 or so graduated. I went back to Gary' desk years later and slapped him with my degree and of course, back then it was posted in the local paper for EVERYONE to see. This degree ultimately led me into the world of IT where I was a Project Manager for 25 years. Just think, if I'd let Gary tell me no and I just curled up in a corner? Where would I be today? I had a boss several years out of college tell me that I was a computer whiz, but I didn't know math. I went and took a college algebra class and slapped an A on Bud's desk. I learned quickly that there are big differences between the No's your parents tell you (that's for safety usually) and the No's peers, bosses and even friends will tell you. Those No's mean to me, that they are protecting only themselves and potentially holding you back. What are they hiding? Why do they want the ability to control my actions? Do you realize if you listen to all the no's, someone else is controlling your destiny? It always leads back to fear. They are trying to instill fear into you, so you don't do it. I say, pay close attention to the No's you are hearing and react accordingly. I can almost guarantee you; you'll end up with a positive result – if you can just find the initiative to tackle it! Thank you for listening, I hope you were inspired, entertained or you learned something new! Hey! I'm on the road to the Laconia Bikefest! Look for The Insane Wanderers and ask for Mechiel! Years ago I was at a leadership conference where the speaker asked if everyone in a position of leadership would raise their hands. Later I thought, everyone should have raised their hands. Leadership begins in how we lead ourselves. Additionally, the lowest level of leadership is for those who lead by their “title. “ Many of the issues leaders face stems from not operating in a way that is congruent with the values they hold. It impacts their ability to lead in a credible way. In this episode I invited Ted Kulawiak to come back on the show for a second time to talk about some chapters in his new book, “21 Lessons Learned in Leadership” on the ethics and morals of leadership. Our goal was to get you, as a leader, to think about HOW you lead and to challenge yourself to get more from yourself and others so we can all make a positive impact. What You'll Learn in This Episode: The tenants of true, actionable leadership Leadership lessons from Gettysburg The place that core values has in your leadership The definition of ethical sales and why it matters Building trust and influence by supporting individual goals A common way leaders compromise relationships What it really means to have someone's back The key to balancing people and profit A compassionate, humanistic approach to leadership during difficult times The big change in how consumers are making decisions about which organizations to support and how that relates to leadership Putting the mental health of your team and your own mental health first The trap many people in corporate America fall into that leads to burnout Resources: Book- The Speed of Trust https://tedkaye55.wixsite.com/21lessonslearned https://www.linkedin.com/in/ted-kulawiak-695a25180/ https://www.amazon.com/21-Lessons-Learned-Sales-Management/dp/164111827X Bio: Ted Kulawiak holds a BS in journalism from Northern Illinois University, and an MBA from the Keller Graduate School of Management. After teaching graduate level classes in sales and advertising management for six years at Keller, Ted earned an Executive Certificate in Leadership and Management from the University of Notre Dame. He held senior sales leadership and training positions in the advertising and media sales industry, selling television, direct mail, outdoor, and newspaper advertising space over the course of 25 years, the majority of which he spent working for the 3M Company in their national advertising division. Post advertising career, Ted transitioned to higher education and enjoyed an 18-year career in executive leadership positions, and now serves as the president of Ted Kaye Sales Management Training LLC based in Pflugerville, (Austin) Texas. Previously he was the vice president of enrollment at Westminster College in Missouri, held the same title at Bisk Education, an online program management company in Florida, and also at DeVry, Inc., in Illinois as he led the online admissions efforts for DeVry University, Keller Graduate School of Management, and Chamberlain College of Nursing. He is the author of “21 Lessons Learned in Sales Management”, and expects his second book, “21 Lessons Learned in Leadership” to be published later this year.
