"Come on feet, cruise for me."
Ian and Pat continue their look at Melvin Van Peebles' filmography. Criterion recently released Melvin Van Peebles: Essential Films, a packed and gorgeously packaged Blu-ray set that contains Watermelon Man (which they talked about in February) and the writer/director's groundbreaking follow-up, Sweet Sweetback's Baadasssss Song! The 1971 proto-Blaxploitation movie centers on a sex worker named Sweetback (Van Peebles) who finds himself on the lam after beating up two White cops in defense of a Black Panther, whom they rough up while in custody. Using his connections, cunning, and, um, natural talents, Sweetback evades the authorities while igniting a revolutionary spirit in a community that's fed up with police harassment and disenfranchisement. In this charged and very wide-ranging discussion, Ian and Pat talk about the film's shocking content; Van Peebles' cutting edge use of editing and meta-storytelling; and why it spawned a vital 1970s movie genre. They also delve into modern issues of race, inspired by questions the film raises, and look ahead to next month's annual holiday movie review. It's a weird, messed-up, poignant show--or as we like to think of it, "Baadasssss"!Timestamps:Intro: 0:00 - 1:09Sweet Sweetback Discussion: 1:10 - 54:08George Carlin and "Guilty White Liberals": 54:09 - 1:05:56Holiday Cheer (Planning Our Annual Christmas Movie Review): 1:05:57 - 1:16:08Outro: 1:16:09 - 1:18:33 Show Links:Watch the Sweet Sweetback's Baadasssss Song trailer.Order Melvin Van Peebles: Essential Films from The Criterion Collection.Watch Ian and Pat discuss Van Peebles' Watermelon Man (recorded earlier this year).Keep up with Pat at HollywoodChicago.com.Subscribe to, like, and comment on the Kicking the Seat YouTube channel!

Cody never got around to wrangling a new special guest for this week's podcast, so in lieu of that, he recruited Scrawls stalwarts Ben Noble, Joseph Shin, and podcast editor Reagan Jones for a discussion of their favorite films of 2020 so far. The boys touch on everything from Spike Lee's widely acclaimed Da Five Bloods to Lana Wilson's divisive Taylor Swift documentary Miss Americana, even making a little time for some discourse regarding Eurovision Song Contest and The King of Staten Island. Things then take a sharp left turn into an extensive analysis and debate over Melvin Van Peebles' iconic blaxploitation (or is it??!) classic Sweet Sweetback's Baadasssss Song.
On this week's episode, pasty pals Danny and Luke discuss Melvin Van Peebles's Sweet Sweetback's Baadasssss Song. They talk blaxploitation, empathy through film, nicknames, and the r&b superstars Earth, Wind, and Fire. Will these two guys be silly? Yes. Will Luke still be indecisive about answering questions? Absolutely. Is Danny still enjoying the same bottle of whisky from episodes past? Good question. Listen up to find out.

For this new format we are talking about 4 movies - The Watermelon Woman (1996), Blackkklansman (2018), Moonlight (2016), and Sweet Sweetback's Baadasssss Song (1971). We hope that these films will serve as a launching point for our own personal journeys in exploring more diverse cinema, and we also hope that you enjoy listening to us discuss these films! Let us know what you think of this new episode format and what you would like us to discuss in the future!

George Wallace By the age of six, George Wallace knew he wanted to be a comedian. He always enjoyed making people laugh, but he also knew the importance of an education. He attended the University of Akron, Ohio and upon graduating with degrees in Transportation, Marketing/Advertising, plus advance studies in Radio and Television from Columbia School of Broadcasting. Literally, a rags-to-riches story, Wallace went from selling rags to VP of Advertising. Still, his dream of being a comedian had a strong hold on him. Within a week of leaving the advertising field, he began to perform stand-up comedy and was offered a job writing for “The Redd Foxx Show.” Wallace is currently pursuing dual coursework at University of Phoenix and DeVry. With his writing and stand-up experience, Wallace began landing television appearances. Wallace was awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2013 Soul Train/Centric Comedy All-Star Awards; and won Best Stand Up Comedian at the prestigious American Comedy Awards after four consecutive nominations. As a veteran radio personality, he has also made appearances on “The Steve Harvey Morning Show” and is a charter member of “The Tom Joyner Morning Show.” In 2004 Wallace appeared as the headlining star of his own show at The Flamingo Hotel in Las Vegas for a 30 day run. Sin City showed its admiration by extending Wallace’s contract indefinitely and nicknaming him “The New Mr. Vegas.” Unlike any other comedy show in Las Vegas, Wallace gave away a number of prizes every night including CDs, DVDs, diamond necklaces, dinner at prestigious restaurants, gourmet chocolates, tropical cruises and even a new car. He celebrated his 10th Anniversary headlining at the Flamingo in March 2014, announced he was closing the show to head back out on the road. Wallace regularly performs in comedy clubs across the country and is an ambassador for the United States government, performing at military bases all over the world. His first book, LAFF IT OFF (Chaite Press) was published in 2014. A tome of life wisdom, humor and insight from a lifetime of observation, the book is in its third printing. Wallace’s most recognized material is his “I Be Thinkin’” lines and jokes about everything from conversational thoughts to political aspirations. Each show he engages members of the audience in comical banter. If provoked, he might even throw out a few of his signature “Yo Mama” jokes. He shows his gratitude to the audience by signing autographs and taking photos after every show. Audience members never know what will happen at the George Wallace show. Wallace is an evolving comedian, which is why his show is different every night. He’s always thinkin’. Fans can now get a taste of what Wallace be thinkin’ on Twitter @MrGeorgeWallace. Your pod friends James and Nick have finally covered 100 episodes of seldom-seen animated American sitcom The Simpsons! We look forward to the next 550-or-so, which we're sure will...retain the high level of quality we've enjoyed thus far, right? In this episode of the podcast we look at the time Burnsy more-or-less kidnapped Bart and then the one where there's a dog in the vents and Skinner gets fired. Discussion topics this week: Thomas Pynchon (as he relates to Burns' Heir), the ads before movies (as seen in Burns' Heir), whether or not Deadpool knows that he's in a movie (uuuh, I forget why), the trailer for Danny Boyle's 'Yesterday' (it's kind-of relevant), Snagglepuss (because he's mentioned in that second episode), and...a bunch of stuff about The Simpsons. It's a good show, honestly.TwitterFacebookemail: podsinthekeyofspringfield@gmail.com
