Ten years ago, a harmful algal bloom in western Lake Erie forced the city of Toledo to issue a “do not drink” advisory for its water supply. Now, Ohio is home to one of the most transformational wetland restoration programs in America. This program, known as H2Ohio, is using wetland restoration and other practices to reduce nutrient flows into Lake Erie and improving the quality of water for its citizens. In this episode, Dr. Mike Brasher sits down with DU regional biologists, Russ Terry and Corey VanStratt, and Eric Saas of the Ohio Department of Natural Resources to discuss DU's involvement in delivering H2Ohio and how it is producing not only cleaner water, but more habitat for ducks and additional places for hunting.Listen now: www.ducks.org/DUPodcastSend feedback: DUPodcast@ducks.org
Dr. Mike Brasher is on location with Fred Zink Jr., co-host of DU TV and owner of Avian-X and Zink Call, and John Simpson, manager of Winous Point Shooting Club, for an early-season migration update and a discussion about the history of waterfowl hunting in northwestern Ohio. The group reflects on the vital role that private landowners and duck clubs play in conserving and managing high-quality wetlands and how warmer winters, less snow, and greater hunting pressure are affecting the timing of migration and hunting opportunities.Listen now: www.ducks.org/DUPodcastSend feedback: DUPodcast@ducks.org

Is a critical collaboration between Ohio leaders to conserve Ohio's most precious natural resource working? The state's H2Ohio program united three state agencies to create more wetlands, reduce harmful fertilizer runoff, and ensure access throughout the state to clean drinking water. With a recent study showing that half the country's tap water contains “forever chemicals” that may cause cancer and other health issues, and drinking water disasters impacting East Palestine, Ohio, Flint, Michigan, and Jackson, Mississippi, are Ohio's elected officials, farmers, developers, and environmental advocates working together successfully to ensure future access to clean drinking water? For the first time ever, CMC welcomes three current members of Governor Mike DeWine's cabinet on a single panel. The panelists are: Brian Baldridge, Director, Ohio Department of Agriculture Mary Mertz, Director, Ohio Department of Natural Resources Anne Vogel, Director, Ohio Environmental Protection Agency The host is Natalie Fahmy, Ohio Statehouse Reporter, NBC4. This forum was sponsored by Advanced Drainage Systems, Del-Co Water Company, Burgess & Niple, The Green Funds of the Columbus Foundation, and the Franklin Soil and Water Conservation District. It was supported by the Grange Insurance Audubon Center. The livestream was presented by The Center for Human Kindness at The Columbus Foundation and The Columbus Dispatch. This forum was recorded before a live audience in Columbus, Ohio on August 9, 2023.

This week on Cultivating Convos we talk about another very important topic - water quality! Launched by Governor Mike DeWine in 2019, H2Ohio is a comprehensive water quality initiative that is addressing serious water issues that have been building in Ohio for decades. Areas of concern include harmful algal blooms on Lake Erie caused by phosphorus runoff from farm fertilizer, wastewater, and home sewage treatment systems due to aging infrastructure, and lead contamination from old water pipes and fixtures. H2Ohio was first funded by the Ohio General Assembly with an investment of $172 million in the 2020-2021 state budget, which allowed the program to rollout to 14 counties in the Maumee River Watershed. Additional funding in the latest budget means the program is expanding. On this Our Ohio Weekly, find out what H2Ohio means for the state's agriculture sector. 00:00 - Clark Hudson, Program Coordinator for H2Ohio in the Western Lake Erie Basin, gives an update on the water quality initiative. 23:50 - After a series of life-changing events while serving as a U.S. soldier, Matt Schaar took his determination and fortitude from the battlefield to the farm fields. Policy Counsel Leah Curtis talks about the basics of beekeeping.
Most of the Cleveland mayoral candidates are opposed to creating an independent police civilian review board. K-12 schools in Northeast Ohio are figuring out how to spend a billion dollars in stimulus money. While it's too early to see results from the H2Ohio program, Lake Erie's harmful algal bloom is expected to be mild this year. J.D. Vance used to admonish Donald Trump's ‘xenophobic' appeals to voters - until he decided to run for Senate. The Cleveland City Planning Commission has approved a “Vision for the Valley” plan to serve as a roadmap for decades of development and investment around an eight-mile section of the Cuyahoga River.
