Stu Levitan welcomes Madison's own John Nichols for a discussion of his new book The Fight for the Soul of the Democratic Party: The Enduring Legacy of Henry Wallace's Anti-Fascist, Anti-Racist Politics, from the fine folks at Verso Press. As to Henry A. Wallace, he was, during the thirties and forties, the highest-ranking antiracist, anti-fascist leader in American politics. For a time in the late thirties and early forties, he was also, after Franklin Roosevelt, the most important American politician. Two terms as the New Deal Secretary of Agriculture, the war years as the most powerful vice president in modern history, up to that point. Even after losing the vice-presidential nomination to Harry Truman in 1944, he remained powerful, as secretary of commerce. But then FDR died six weeks into his fourth term, and Wallace was not enough of a Cold War imperialist for the new President, who fired him in the fall of 1946. Which set the stage for his ill-advised and ill-fated campaign as the Progressive Party candidate for president in 1948, and a long slow slide into an outcast's obscurity. What his career meant at the time, has meant since, and could mean for the Democratic party in the future, has occupied John Nichols for some time, and is the focus of this new book. As to John Nichols, you probably know he is a Wisconsin native, associate editor of The Capital Times, National Affairs Correspondent for The Nation, and contributing writer for The Progressive and In These Times. And in his spare time, he writes books. In addition to this latest book about Henry Wallace, John is the author of Horsemen of the Trumpocalypse: A Field Guide to the Most Dangerous People in America; The Genius of Impeachment (New Press); Jews for Buchanan; and a best-selling biography of former vice president Dick Cheney, Dick: The Man Who is President , which was also published in French and Arabic. He edited Against the Beast: A Documentary History of American Opposition to Empire (Nation Books), and with Robert W. McChesney, has co-authored half a dozen book about the failings of the media and politics, most recently People Get Ready: The Fight Against a Jobless Economy and a Citizenless Democracy.   Brothers and sisters, brothers and sisters, it is a pleasure to welcome to MBB my friend, John Nichols.

Phil Stinson, professor of criminal justice at Bowling Green State University and the principal investigator for the Henry A. Wallace Police Crime Database, reminds the Misfits that the ugliness of police violence exists, day in and day out, and only rises to public consciousness occasionally. The blatant disregard for life shown by the officer who killed George Floyd pulls the curtain back on a cop culture that supports violent street justice and deliberately generates a fear of black people. Officers with troubled histories escape the consequences of their violence daily, and progress in breaking through the thin-blue-line culture is slow. People have a right to be angry, he says. Dr. Marvin Weinbaum, director of Afghanistan and Pakistan Studies at the Middle East Institute, explains that there’s still debate over when and how to pull out of Afghanistan, despite Trump’s desire to leave that war behind. And with an election coming up, nothing is set in stone. He also explains that peace and ceasefires aren’t necessarily components of the “exit agreement” the US has with the Taliban. The Taliban, however, is behind the latest ceasefire, which is a PR ploy and covers for the fact that it’s actually the Afghan government making all the latest concessions. Walter Smolarek, Sputnik news analyst and producer of Loud and Clear, describes the relationship between Hong Kong, China and the US, and whether the US really is going to change its economic relationship with Hong Kong. The US is definitely taking steps to bar Chinese students, a hysteria consciously cultivated by the US intelligence community. They also discussed North Korea’s rational nuclear deterrence, and Pyongyang’s role in Asian geopolitics. Misfit hosts Bob Schlehuber and Jamarl Thomas also discussed the latest unemployment numbers and the US’ huge economic contraction, the million-dollar lifeboats CEOs will escape this crisis in, Trump’s executive order on social media, and the coming US charges against Venezuela’s first lady.

"The American fascist would prefer not to use violence. His method is to poison the channels of public information. With a fascist the problem is never how best to present the truth to the public but how best to use the news to deceive the public into giving the fascist and his group more money or more power... They claim to be super-patriots, but they would destroy every liberty guaranteed by the Constitution. They demand free enterprise but are the spokesmen for monopoly and vested interest. Their final objective, toward which all their deceit is directed, is to capture political power so that, using the power of the state and the power of the market simultaneously, they may keep the common man in eternal subjection."  - Henry A. Ellen Dorsey is the Executive Director of the Wallace Global Fund, a private foundation focused on progressive social change in the fields of environment, democracy, human rights and corporate accountability. It was set up by Henry A. Wallace, a former visionary vice President of the United States who championed what he called the ‘common man’ in the struggle to prevent financial elites attempts to control politics and the planet’s resources. Wallace once said the following words: “I am committed and do renounce the support of those who practice hate and preach prejudice; of those who would limit the civil rights of others; of those who would restrict the use of the ballot.”  The world needs this type of leadership more than ever and as you’ll hear now, Ellen is a worthy torchbearer of Wallace’s legacy. A former political science professor, she is a leading campaigner in the movement for divestment from fossil fuels and has helped steer over 155 foundations to divest from coal, oil and gas. She previously worked for Amnesty International and at one stage was Chairperson of Amnesty International USA. She also served on the board of Greenpeace USA and various other leading progressive organisations. Based in Washington DC, Ellen is a powerful voice of hope and justice and I found her take on politics, philanthropy and people power to be refreshing and uplifting. I hope you enjoy this interview with Ellen Dorsey. ........... About the podcast The Love and Courage podcast features interviews with inspirational people who are making a real difference in the world today.
