One of Hamish's oldest and dearest friends finally sits down on the HODD couch for a well overdue chat. Wippa and Hame talk all the time, but not often about the deep stuff that drives them to be better dads. In a conversation that is equal parts serious and silly, Hame and Wip discuss the formative impact of Wip's own dad, dealing with big questions children unexpectedly ask, how Wip tries to show his kids that nothing is impossible, and why setting out to build a birdhouse that ultimately becomes home to a rare rat is still a massive win for the family. Oh, and they laugh a lot. At times because Wip has told a funny story, but more often because he has told an entirely inappropriate story with explicit language to match. Apologies in advance. We should have known better. You can of course catch Wippa with Fitzy and Kate Ritchie on NOVA FM. And you can learn more about the good work Wip is doing with 36 Months HERE. HODD overseas adventure time! We headed to Wellington to chat with Kiwi comedy and music legend, and one half of Flight of the Conchords, Bret McKenzie and he gave us a masterclass on playing with our kids. Bret makes up silly stuff for a day job (he even won an Oscar for it!) and as a dad he's focused his gift for absurdity and daftness into creating pro level games for his kids, and he gives us some of his best hits. They're awesome! Seriously, you're gonna want to write them down.  Bret also has some great insights about why putting in the time is so powerful, why connecting with community and investing in your neighbourhood is so good for your kids and also how to keep a lookout for that special thing that fires your kid up and ignites that spark of interest. He also reveals that despite his best efforts he might never get a billy cart built for his younger son. When it comes to DIY construction, Bret makes a great songwriter. However, one great thing Bret has constructed is a life that ensures he is there for his family, and his passion for simply turning up and providing consistency for his kids is clear… even if this means they just think he's a half decent chauffeur.  We can't thank Bret enough for having a chat, we got seriously inspired on the creative play front, and man did we laugh a lot. Bret's album, Songs without Jokes is here on Apple or here on Spotify - check it out! And obviously, if you've never seen Flight of the Conchords, please drop everything now and do so - it truly is one of the all time greats. He's been on our screens making us laugh for years, most recently in Colin From Accounts, but in this chat Patrick Brammall unpacks one of his more meaty roles to date… Being a first time dad!  Patty's path to parenthood is a little unique with him and his wife Harriet Dyer adopting a baby girl in 2021 (Harriet is also co-creator/co-star of Colin From Accounts). Patty talks us through this experience, how it's fundamentally changed him, his perspectives and priorities. And given his daughter was just 2 and a half when we recorded this, Patty is the first to admit that he really is still trying to figure this dadding thing out!! Patty is so honest about the ups and the downs, his hopes and fears, the sleep deprivation and the toll it's taking on his face, and how he is still coming to terms with the fact that his time will never be his own again (well, not for the next 15 years or so). Patty, like all of us, is attempting this parenting Rubik's cube on the fly, and sometimes it's working, and sometimes it's not!! And if that wasn't enough, we have a brief musical interlude from a neighbour. This episode has got it all! Huge thanks to Patty (and Harriet) for sharing this really personal story, and for carving time out of a pretty jammed schedule to chat with us. He's helped create some of Australia's most memorable comedic characters, battled tirelessly to elevate Football (the proper round ball kind!) to the upper echelons of Australian sport, and most importantly, he's the father to 2 (now adult) sons. But before looking at his own dadding, Santo takes us back to Melbourne in the 1960s and 70s, painting a vivid picture of the multi-generational approach to parenting that he experienced growing up in a migrant family, especially the huge role his grandfather played. Things were a touch looser back then! With his own kids now young adults, Santo is able to explain to us how his approach to parenting has changed over the years. But he's come to think there are a couple universal elements, and he borrowed them from some advice the late, great John Clarke gave on comedy writing. John said audiences like two, seemingly incompatible things… consistency and variation. Santo reckons kids are the same. You need the consistency to keep turning up, be rock solid and always there for them, but the ability to vary your approach based on what they are presenting, what they are going through and who your kid is.  Pretty bloody smart if you ask us!!   Santo shares a bunch of gems like these, and of course some great stories and behind the scenes moments from The Late Show and The Castle (you'll get some of Dennis Denuto's origin story!) Santo is super honest, humble and doesn't waste time trying to convince us he has all the answers - as he says, parenting is an adventure and sometimes you just gotta go with it! But he is pretty steadfast about one thing… you really should force your kid to learn an instrument!  Huge thanks to Santo for making the time to chat, we absolutely loved it. And then Billy further builds on this to provide some amazing practical advice for a multitude of different scenarios that we commonly face as parents.  But here's the heartening thing, and this has come up time and time again this season… Billy reaffirms that some of the most important things we can do as parents is in fact the simple stuff. Health and fitness industry expert and entrepreneur Sam Wood has a beautifully honest chat with Hame about his dadding journey.   From what's like to begin your dadding with a 9 year old step daughter, to then only eight short years later having 4 daughters, Sam shares with Hame the struggles he's had learning on the job with a teenager, how he tries to instil adventurousness and positivity into his kids each day and how the death of his mother when he was a teenager completely reframed the relationship with his own father. Sam also recounts how the birth of their 4th daughter was not straightforward and how the resulting lengthy hospital stay affected him and the family. How Other Dads Dad with Hamish Blake

We all know Scott Cam from The Block, but a few years ago, some words of wisdom from Scott Cam The Dad provided Hamish with some of the inspiration to create this pod.  So, we advise you to Tools Down and listen in to a dad that takes his fathering trade really seriously… especially if it involves being a bit silly. And even more so if it means blowing off school! Scott is of course the much-loved host of The Block, but he's still a carpenter at heart. (Hame once borrowed Scott's chisel set and WASHED THEM!! - Scott was beyond mortified). As a dad to three adult kids, Scott has got a tonne of hard-earned wisdom to pass on, and while he describes himself as an ‘old school' dad - to us he sounds like a big softy that just expects his kids to be good people above all else.  Hame loved this chat with Scott, and in it we get to hear a side of Scott that reveals a man who really, deeply loves his family and has some strong opinions on what helps a family stay close, loving and “good people”. He may have played 350 games of AFL - but as Eddie's wife always reminds him - his job is only just beginning… for his kids, and for his people. Eddie, with his wife Anna, have 5 young children, so pre-season training pales in comparison to the high contact sport of dadding that many kids.  His lunch box game is elite!  But as Hame learns in this fascinating chat, for Eddie, supporting a family is linked inextricably with a supportive community. Growing up playing at his grandfather's house, Eddie explains how he began learning his dadding skills from a young age, and how now in the suburbs of Melbourne he is fostering community not only for his kids, but for many of the young indigenous footballers that leave behind their support structures to play AFL. The benefits are huge, and it's not just because of the extra babysitting! Eddie might be a dad to 5, but he is also a role model to thousands, and the way he takes it all in his stride with so much grace and humility is pretty inspiring.  He's one of the AFL's greatest small forwards of all time, kicking 640 goals and receiving Goal of the Year a record 4 times. But since retirement he has turned his energy and passion away form football to become an amazing advocate for indigenous youth, with a special focus on education and creating culturally safe spaces. In this super funny, yet super heartfelt episode, Christian uses all 19 years of his dadding experience to distill down for us some really amazing insights and advice. He's thought about this dadding caper a lot, so from explaining his mantra of “no small moments”, to advice on how to negotiate with teenagers, Christian has put his formidable gift for communication to wonderful use for us in this episode.  So sit down (or keep washing the dishes), start a new note, and jot down a few of Christain's pearlers. How Other Dads Dad with Hamish Blake

Tim Minchin has created the most amazing, diverse and groundbreaking body of work. Significant to this episode is that he also co-created 2 kids with his wife, Sarah. Tim was extremely generous to sit down with Hame and share some of his 17 years or so of dadding experiences and learnings. He explains how he tries to shepherd his kids rather than control them, his family's experience with neurodiversity and ASD, and how he applies reason, logic and in his words “anti-drama” to his dadding. Tim is a real clever clogs and thinks deeply about, well… everything. And he is super honest. It makes for a chat that is both wisdom filled and thought provoking. But underpinning it all for Tim is the fervent belief that if your kids know unequivocally that you love them for who they are, you're doing a lot right. If you've been hiding under a rock for the last 20 years, Tim is a multi-talented singer, songwriter, composer, comedian, actor, musician, writer, author, performer, thinker and producer. We'd use the word polymath, but we don't really understand what it means. He's sold out shows all over the world, he's appeared in film, television and theatre, winning heaps of awards along the way. He's even won a bloody LOGIE! And his fine work is heard weekly in our households currently, because he wrote the music and lyrics for the phenomenally great and funny Matilda the Musical.  Tim has a tour happening in Australia beginning in October 2023 - and there are still tickets available!!  He didn't even tell us about this… and he hardly needs a plug, but you can find all his gig details at www.timminchin.com — Lastly, a big hearty thanks to our very good friends at Hertz who are supporting us for all of Season 2. Deswechn is die a normål vo der Frondseide ausgenomme. Edz hammer des aggduell veränderd. Weil die edz in die Audiofeils neighörd. Also is erhöhde Korreggdness geforderd. Zumm zwäddn dörfsd nie ausm Blick verlier, dass des edz ehm so is, wies is. Jeder ennzelne vo uns, wo zu lax mid der eichenen Verandwordung umgeh dud, is ned nur wie a Raser uff der Landschdraß maximål für sich un a boar Annere verandwordlich. The post 9/11 GI Bill paved the way for a number of recent veterans to enroll in colleges and universities across the country. However, many of these veterans returning from active duty face unique challenges that aren't typical of your average student. On WFUV’s Fordham Conversations, I'll be talking with Gary Kucinich and Dan Hodd. These two marines and current college students started “Armed Forces at Fordham.” This student group helps fellow veterans make the transition back into college life. But first I’m talking to Fordham’s Associate Vice President for Veterans Affairs, Dr. Michael Gillan about the FordhamVets Initiative.

Poet, playwright and novelist Adam Thorpe was born in Paris in 1956 and grew up in India, Cameroon and England. After graduating from Magdalen College, Oxford, in 1979, he started a theatre company and toured villages and schools before moving to London where he taught Drama and English Literature. Thorpe lives in France with his wife and three children. His most recent books are a collection of short stories, Is This The Way You Said? (2006); a poetry collection, Birds with a Broken Wing (2007); and the novels  The Standing Pool (2008) and Hodd (2009) in which he depicts Robin Hood as a glorified 13th century gangster surrounded by a group of psychopathic thugs, desperate men preying on the innocent. We talked recently in Toronto at the IFOA, about the Robin Hood myth, and our apparent need to create heroes to address injustice, to express indignation, and right the wrongs of an unjust world. In the conversation we riff off William Flesch's contention that fiction satisfies our desire to see the good vindicated and the wicked get their ‘comeuppance.'
