We are back with a new episode. For the first time in our young podcast series we are dedicating an entire episode to one film. We carefully chose the timeless Hrishikesh Mukherjee classic - Namak Haraam. It is a film that is a permanent fixture in our list of important and great films. This film is seen as one of many films from the socialism focused era of Hindi films. The film has gotten better for both Saahil and Saqib after each viewing over the decades. It is also seen as the pivotal moment in both Rajesh Khanna and Amitabh Bachchan's respective star journeys. The story of friendship is put under an immense trial of class divide.. Mukherjee has masterly displayed the everyday conflicts of this test in the form of loyalty and conscience. Let us know what you think of Namak Haraam today!

In the 1970's, there was the rise of writers Salim-Javed's angry young man, a world which was largely unreal, stylish, violent and very popular with the audience. Around the same time, two Bengali filmmakers were quietly narrating gentler stories, which hit closer, to the real lives of the Indian middle class. These two directors were Basu Chatterjee and Hrishikesh Mukherjee. In the second part of my conversation with dear friend, and Hunter and Badhai Do Director Harshvardhan Kulkarni, we continue from where we left of and converse about his life at the Pune Film Institute, his initial struggles to find his voice as a filmmaker, his blockbuster hits made on his own terms and finally, how he has managed to contemporarise BasuDa and HrishiDa through his films Hi, I am Atul Taishete and welcome to my show ‘ Conversations with Atul'. Khandaan: A Bollywood Podcast has 2005’s NO ENTRY for Episode 82.  Co-starring Salman Khan in an extended special appearance, this multi-starrer boasts of an eclectic line up: Anil Kapoor, Fardeen Khan, Bipasha Basu, Celina Jaitley, Lara Dutta, and Esha Deol in what was to become the first of many successful sex comedies directed by Anees Bazmee. A convoluted tale of cheating husbands, suspicious wives, noble call girls, and feminists who advocate for mental health, No Entry was one of the biggest hits of the year. This film is a cherished favorite of noted film scholar Jai Arjun Singh, author of Jaane Bhi Do Yaaron - Seriously Funny Since 1983 and The World of Hrishikesh Mukherjee, and he generously offered to share the experience with us. Banter, Bollywood and Beyond

In Episode 2, we go a bit lighter and discuss Hrishikesh Mukherjee’s 1979 smash comedy Gol Maal (meaning “Messed Up” in English), a comedy where a sports-and-film obsessed chartered accountant switches between dual identities to keep his job and woo his boss’s daughter, Urmila. If you’re feeling, like us, that one of the best remedies for these trying times is a good comedy, then this might just be for you. Fake identity hijinks! Mocking Bollywood superstar cameos! An obsession with moustaches (so many moustaches)! It may not quite match the comic insanity of Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro (which we will definitely cover one day) but this movie is pretty close in its dedication to making you laugh yourself silly. In this episode, we also attempt to unravel some of the context of late 70s India which influenced the film. Much of the humour is actually a gentle and good-natured poke at the conflict between traditional Hindu values of the older generation (such as having the right kind of moustache) and the increasingly Westernised values of the younger one (such as not even having a moustache). The film also contains a smattering of gender and workplace politics, all done in good fun. So, moustache or not, take your seat and get ready for kick-off as we dive into Gol Maal.   NB: The episode Thumbnail is the Poster for Gol Maal, as found on Wikipedia. Welcome to Episode 9 of the Khandaan Podcast, where we turn our eagle eyes toward Kal Ho Na Ho (2003), starring Shah Rukh Khan at the height of his stardom. Commonly believed to be a remake of Hrishikesh Mukherjee’s weepie Anand (1971), starring Rajesh Khanna at the height of his stardom, KHNH is a souped-up melodrama best remembered nostalgically than rewatched in the present according to podcast consensus. This week we are joined by guest host and writer/journalist Anisha Jhaveri as Sujoy continues to chase success as influencer to the sundar, susheel, and thodi special. Asim, Amrita and Anisha initially approached KHNH with eagerness, especially since it beat out Tere Naam, an excruciating Salman Khan remake of an excruciating South Indian film, but their joy soon turned to ashes as they were forced to confront that their nostalgia was misplaced and this movie was basically a sporadically funny, racist, homophobic mess with extremely unfortunate costume design. We recommend you read Molly Ringwald’s [excellent essay](https://www.newyorker.com/culture/personal-history/what-about-the-breakfast-club-molly-ringwald-metoo-john-hughes-pretty-in-pink/amp) on dealing with problematic faves in retrospect after listening to this episode. Episode 9 also includes a short discussion of the short-lived Salman Khan sentencing saga and Asim’s inability to properly understand the visual appeal of SRK walking around aimlessly while dressed in white linen.  Note: The Khandaan podcast is an interactive experience!
