You can watch the interview online at https://www.pbs.org/video/up-close-with-ricky-the-dragon-steamboat-qiz67j/  Marble City Opera had five performances in June. Frank's grandson Artie watched the dress rehearsal of Il Tabarro and both performances. The audience is left to wonder if Kathryn's character lives or dies at the end. She gave Frank a t-shirt with a list of “opera spoilers.”  Kathryn and her husband James went to the Festival on the Fourth at World's Fair Park and met up with Frank, Jere, Artie, and Dr. Frank Jr. PhD. James noticed a bad odor but was able to find its source. The Knoxville Symphony Orchestra began their performance with the “The Star-Spangled Banner” and conductor Aram Demirjian invited the audience to sing along. Several people noticed Kathryn's high note.  Frank and Jere took two of their grandchildren to the Children's Museum of Oak Ridge for a “Wonderful Wednesday” presentation by the Tri-M Music Honor Society at Oak Ridge High School. Jere informed Frank that she had been Tri-M president at her high school.  This episode is sponsored by BoneZones.com (don't forget the S). Kathryn and Jere bought CDs but neither of them have a CD player. Frank suggests trying to play them in a DVD player.  Frank reminisces about playing records, tapes, and CDs at WAVA, where all the songs were sped up slightly to get the listeners hooked on the faster version.  Frank and Jere took Artie to Mighty Musical Monday at the Tennessee Theatre.  Frank misplaced his prescription sunglasses but eventually found them on top of a book titled Thinking Clearly by John-Mark Miravalle.  A Waffle House waiter named Eric asked Frank to try Waffle House Sauce on his egg sandwich. SynopsisOn today's date in 1918, the Metropolitan Opera in New York offered the world premiere performance of not one, not two, but three new operas by Giacomo Puccini. The three one-act operas are collectively billed as Il Trittico, or The Triptych. In order of their presentation at the Met, the triptych consisted of Il Tabarro (The Cloak), a rather sordid tale of passion and murder, followed by a sentimental tear-jerker titled Suor Angelica (Sister Angelica, after its Romantic heroine), and, for a comic finale, Gianni Schicchi, titled after the resourceful hero of its comic plot.Musical America reported a warm welcome for the three new Puccini operas, but did find Il Tabarro “in the main, black and brutal.” In that journal's opinion, the hit of the evening was the comic opera, Gianni Schicci. In particular, one brief soprano aria from that opera so pleased the first-night audience that it had to be encored.Over time, this little aria, “O Mio Babbino Caro,” has become one of Puccini's greatest hits and has even cropped up in the soundtracks of movies such as A Room With a View and G.I. Jane.Music Played in Today's ProgramGiacomo Puccini (1858-1924) Gianni Schicchi; Angela Gheorghiu, soprano; London Symphony; Antonio Pappano, cond. EMI 56587

Frank asks Kathryn if we are still in the “off-season” for opera companies.  Frank's wife Jere asked him to donate some of her old clothes to the Ladies of Charity Thrift Store on Baxter Avenue (https://www.ladiesofcharityknox.org/). While he was there, he picked up fifteen neckties to wear while hosting Tennessee Scholars' Bowl on East Tennessee PBS or when emceeing an event.  At his last teeth cleaning, Frank found out that his dentist was not in his new insurance network and he had to pay the full rate for a cleaning and x-rays. When he called to make an appointment with a new dentist, he was offered an appointment at 2:30 p.m., which is the best dad joke ever.  Frank's wife joked that he would search for an attractive blonde dentist, based on his choice of dermatologist. Kathryn is thinking of dying her hair blonde again. In 2018, she went from bleach blonde to black hair in order to sing Tosca with the Helena Symphony.  This episode is sponsored by BoneZones.com (don't forget the S). Frank tried to swallow an Aleve gel-cap without water but it began dissolving in his mouth. Frank recalls that he knew some ballet dancers who used to pop the capsules and rub the gel on their toes.  Kathryn is headed back to Baton Rouge. She is concerned about recent wildfires and the possibility of hurricanes in Louisiana. Frank recalls that the owners of Little Nicky's New York Pizza in Solway lost their Florida restaurant in a hurricane. Kathryn and her husband James once got stuck in a Florida hurricane.  Frank went to a reception after Mass at which representatives of the various ministries recruit new members. Sometimes the animals can be rescued in time. Frank saved a bat from drowning in the pool. It clung to the fence all day while it rested and dried off.  Frank's wife Jere cooked steaks on the grill on Father's Day. Frank taught his kids to sing the Father's Day song that Groucho Marx used to sing. They changed the lyrics slightly to say they were giving him a box of frozen meat instead of a necktie. Kathryn sent her father a fresh cheesecake via a restaurant delivery service.  This episode is sponsored by BoneZones.com (don't forget the S). In Tennessee, they bloom a month earlier.  Kathryn has been in Baton Rouge, Huntsville, and Pittsburgh. The Opera America conference was in Pittsburgh this year. The opening reception was on a boat. The package is entirely written in Chinese. Frank used the Google Translate app on his phone to learn what it said. There was a warning to not put it in the “Huiboyi.”  Frank was glad that a nonjudgmental plumber who unclogged his bathroom sink. Constantine Costi is one of our most exciting emerging talents at Opera Australia, and has been honing his craft by working alongside many of our most experienced directors, assisting on large-scale productions and reviving celebrated stagings. In 2020, he was due to tackle his biggest project for us yet: directing Handa Opera on Sydney Harbour. Costi was about to move his production of La Traviata (based on Francesca Zambello’s 2012 staging) from the rehearsal room to the harbour-side stage when COVID-19 restrictions forced the cancellation of the season.   In this conversation with Opera Australia Artistic Director Lyndon Terracini, Costi talks about growing up working in the family business, De Costi Seafood, and how he’s still on call to work at peak times. He also talks about some of his early adventures in opera — including a production of Il Tabarro staged in a commercial kitchen in Enmore — and explains why directors are “glorified stage mums”.

On today’s date in 1918, the Metropolitan Opera in New York offered the world premiere performance of not one, not two, but three brand-new operas by Giacomo Puccini. The three one-act operas are collectively billed as “Il Trittico” or “The Triptych.” In order of their presentation at the Met, the triptych consisted of “Il Tabarro” (or “The Cloak”), a rather sordid tale of passion and murder, followed by a sentimental tear-jerker titled “Suor Angelica” (or “Sister Angelica,” after its Romantic heroine), and, for a comic finale, “Gianni Schicchi,” titled after the resourceful hero of its comic plot. Musical America reported a warm welcome for the three new Puccini operas, but did find “Il Tabarro” “in the main, black and brutal.” In that journal’s opinion, the hit of the evening was the comic opera, “Gianni Schicci.” In particular, one brief soprano aria from that opera so pleased the first night audience that it had to be encored. Over time, this little aria, “O mio babbino caro,” has become one of Puccini’s “Greatest Hits,” and has even cropped up in the soundtracks of a movies like “A Room With a View” and “G.I. Jane.”

Libby Purves meets shepherd James Rebanks; Helen Scott from the Three Degrees; journalist Caitriona Palmer and American tenor Carl Tanner. James Rebanks is a shepherd, known to his followers as the Herdwick Shepherd. The first son of a shepherd, who was the first son of a shepherd himself, he and his family have lived and worked in and around the Lake District for generations. In his book, The Shepherd's Life, he writes about a shepherd's year, giving an account of rural life and the connection with the land that has often been lost. The Shepherd's Life - a Tale of the Lake District is published by Penguin. Caitriona Palmer is a journalist based in Washington DC. Adopted as a baby, she writes about establishing contact with her birth mother in her book, An Affair with my Mother. Caitriona was raised by loving adoptive parents and enjoyed a happy childhood. She discovered her birth mother, 'Sarah', in her twenties and they developed a close attachment. But Sarah set one condition on this relationship - she wished to keep it a secret. An Affair with my Mother is published by Penguin. Carl Tanner is an American tenor. He plays Luigi in the Royal Opera House's production of Il Tabarro, a role he has previously sung in Buenos Aires and for New York City Opera. Before turning to opera Carl led an eventful life as a truck driver and bounty hunter. A keen and talented singer all his life, his career took off when he was discovered performing in a New York restaurant. Il Tabarro is at the Royal Opera House, London. Singer Helen Scott is one third of The Three Degrees. The longest-running female vocal group in history, The Three Degrees were originally formed in 1963 in Philadelphia. Their hits include When Will I See You Again, Take Good Care of Yourself and A Woman in Love. Their first new studio album in 25 years, Strategy (Our Tribute to Philadelphia), is on SoulMusic Records and they are touring the UK. Producer: Paula McGinley.

I present three excerpts from her new CD and hope you enjoy her.         The selections are from Verdi's "Il Corsaro," Giordano's "Andrea Chenier," and Puccini's "Edgar."    The album is on the KLEOS Classics label,Number KL5149 and you might search on Helicon Records Site.   (I get NO commission!!!!)
