We conclude our Camp Cinema season with our eighth episode covering Johnny Guitar (1954) and Imitation of Life (1959).In our finale, we delve into the origins of Camp Cinema in the 1950s, spotlighting Nicholas Ray's flamboyant western Johnny Guitar and Douglas Sirk's melodramatic Imitation of Life. Johnny Guitar subverts the traditional male bravado typical of most westerns by pitting two powerful women against each other. The visual artistry of Ray and his cinematographer, Harry Stradling, reveals the campy essense of the film with a rich palette of canary yellows, baked terra cottas, and deep azures. Imitation of Life achieves a similar feat, but with emotional resonance rather than visual flair. During our 1950s season, we explored Todd Haynes' commendable Douglas Sirk hommage, Far From Heaven. But nothing compares to the authentic touch of Sirk himself. Sirk masterfully understood cinema's power over an audience, manipulating emotions with precision in Imitation of Life. Its finale is one of the most emotionally explosive moments ever captured on celluloid. Camp manifest is many forms. Here we have two films that seem diametrically opposed in genre, but both use camp to full effect to elicit a deep response.

Season 2, Episode 2: IMITATION OF LIFE We continue our ten-part series where we take a deep dive into a film celebrating a milestone anniversary this year. Today's subject is the 1934 melodrama Imitation of Life. Directed by John Stahl, this movie stars Claudette Colbert and Louise Beavers in an interracial friendship of two single mothers. The film has since been overshadowed by its 1959 remake, but it makes for a fascinating look at some of the social mores of society 90 years passed. Next week, we will turn our attention to 1944 and select a film turning 80, Otto Preminger's film noir classic, Laura.
Melodrama is never mellow, and Douglas Sirk makes that very clear. In this week's episode, the FilmBabble gentlemen watch a proper technicolor tearjerker. “Why can't you just enjoy it? Why do you gotta complain about it?” People worldwide have been asking these EXACT same questions forever (OR, at a minimum, at least the last couple of years). Whether it's with regard to hijacking someone else's pleasure, enjoying some over-done meat drapes, or debating whether a band is its brand (or vice versa), these questions (along with countless others) persist and cannot be ignored or denied. And given that this episode might be a bit of a departure from our “normal” format, it might get a little weird for some of you. Then again, the last couple of years have been anything but “normal” for our entire, frisbee-globe, pyramid shaped planet, so just take your relaxers, sit back, enjoy it, and for the love of all things Iommi, stop complaining about it, you bunch of whiny, obsequient, bootlicking behbehs. It's time to discover the kind of meatballs flat earthers prefer as we reflect on the hijacking hijinks of the “Jukebox Hero,” the powerful entertainment value of anger, and the downsides of ultra-twanglification as we engage in a polarizing discussion regarding a certain upcoming “reunion” that sparked the originally asked questions posed above. This week on Black Girl Film Club, we take a long (very long!) hard look at Imitation of Life (1959), directed by Douglas Sirk and starring Lana Turner, Juanita Moore, Susan Kohner, and Sandra Dee. This melodramatic movie and the original 1934 version are so beloved that they've both been included in the National Film Registry and we honestly can't figure out why. It even secured two Best Supporting Oscar nominations! HOW? Also in this episode: we talk about racial passing and its depiction on screen, novelist Fannie Hearst's life and inspiration for the novel of the same name, and even try to reimagine this movie as a blackmail/murder mystery! Our recommendation this week is Roma (2018) dir. Alfonso Cuarón. Support us with a Ko-fi! https://ko-fi.com/blackgirlfilmclub Follow us on Twitter @/blkgirlfilmclub. It's the hugely popular 1959 version of the hugely popular novel Imitation of Life. Directed by Douglas Sirk and starring Lana Turner, Susan Kohnner, and Juanite Moore, the movie was Universal's most successful movie up to that point. Imitation of Life (1934) Imitation of Life (1959) The original film was directed by John Stahl and was a box office success where it was released in 1934 and again in 1936. It is as in the Film National Registry. The film stars Claudette Colbert and Louise Beavers. The film deals with miscegenation and is considered one of the top films dealing with race issues. The 1959 film, starring Lana Turner, Juanita Moore and John Gavin. The film was another box office smash and received two Oscar nominations for Juanita Moore and Susan Kohner. This film is also in the Film National Registry as being important to preserve. The film was also part of the Douglas Sirk films that would garnish the tag soap opera melodramas. Dealing with race issues during their respective time periods, it is interesting how each film handles the central themes. Mahalia Jackson appears as a gospel singer. We have a jumbo-sized episode covering TWO movies: Imitation of Life (1934) and its remake Imitation of Life (1959)! We discuss the groundbreaking nature behind these movies, which highlights the focus on Black women's stories. However, these films aren't perfect (and are still very white-centric); in this episode, we critique parts of the writing and rethink how we'd liked to have seen these narratives told in the days of Old Hollywood. It's a throwback to the 90's as they discuss the issues around "interracial" dating. Kat obviously doesn't believe in the concept of "race"...fans of the show already know this. (At 8:30 Kat tries to take a picture in a dim room of a dark-skinned person and a light-skinned person; It's almost impossible.) Kat is also eager to talk about the many reasons she dislikes this book while Deon defends his choice thoughtfully. The crew also share their mutual love of the "magical" healing power of laughter. It's the contrast that makes life good, so sit back, relax, and enjoy the ride. thefabpodcast@gmail.com YouTube https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCItEfcDmVRiRjMcZCE2rKFw Instagram @thefabpodcast Deon Curry @brightfame4 Sorry We're Canceled https://www.youtube.com/results?searchquery=sorry+we%27re+canceled The Patdown https://www.youtube.com/results?searchquery=the+patdown+with+ms+pat+podcast Now, That's Debatable https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCpFQi7uEqRz47ldtmccnUfA Movie reference: Imitation of Life (Sooooo GOOD!) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EC7elhmy1-E
Jackie & Greg struggle with the inclusion of Douglas Sirk's classic melodrama on the list. After making comparisons to the original film from 1934, they question the intent of the 1959 remake. Does Sirk bring anything new to the table? Is the film more popular than it should be due to the scandal surrounding the murder of Lana Turner's mobster boyfriend? Tune in and hear them at their most indifferent, as they attempt to suss out how much of the film is intentional, while pulling absurd dialogue from the film and going to town.#93 on Sight & Sound's "The 100 Greatest Films of All Time" list.https://www.bfi.org.uk/sight-and-sound/greatest-films-all-timeCheck us out at our official website: https://www.sceneandheardpod.comJoin our weekly film club: https://www.instagram.com/arroyofilmclubJP Instagram/Twitter: jacpostajGK Instagram: gkleinschmidtPhotography: Matt AraquistainMusic: Andrew CoxSpecial Thanks: Kathryn Ferentchak
What makes us want to live in someone else's movie? Are our own lives that desperate? Is there something we can do to change it? In this lesson I talk about how to address the major pressupositions we live by that cause us to desire another persons' life and imitate it rather than carving out our own niches. We address sabotaging ideologies and beliefs that paralyze us from moving forward all the while pretending to look successful online. Are you living life or are you just copying someone else's? Rebecca Hall's new PASSING takes a more restrained, internal approach to its story about racial identity and the rejection thereof than Douglas Sirk's 1959 classic IMITATION OF LIFE, but the two films share an awareness of how style and subject matter can work hand in hand. We're joined again this week by critic Odie Henderson to discuss how each film balances its messaging, storytelling, and style, after digging into PASSING's black-and-white cinematography, literary source material, and ambiguous ending. Rebecca Hall's new film PASSING centers on a complicated female friendship defined in part by semi-porous racial boundaries, a thematic throughline that pointed us directly to Douglas Sirk's IMITATION OF LIFE — with an assist from RogerEbert.com critic Odie Henderson, who in his recent review of Hall's film invoked Sirk's 1959 melodrama, citing it as his #3 film of all time. We're joined this week by Henderson to discuss how IMITATION OF LIFE's wrenching storyline about a Black woman's ongoing rejection by her white-passing daughter operates within the whole of a film that has several other plot concerns, primarily those of a white woman played by the film's lone movie star, and how the film's performances and overall heightened style mesh with its messaging about race and class. Plus, we respond to some feedback regarding one of our major problems with LAST NIGHT IN SOHO, and how it plays across the pond. Please share your comments, thoughts, and questions about IMITATION OF LIFE, PASSING, or anything else in the world of film, by sending an email to comments@nextpictureshow.net, or leaving a short voicemail at (773) 234-9730. Once again, Joe finds himself in a pique of rage, having identified Craig's plagiarised contributions towards The Train Rush's topic-based episode on ‘the value of originality'? Why must his work follow him home? WHY can't his co-host be more mature than the juveniles under his charge? He slowly reaches into the West most drawer of his home-office desk for the familiar, dull weight of his blood-splattered souvenir railroad spike thinking, “this will be the last time…” Chicago Express/American Rails/Luzon Rails/A bloody murder may feature.

To celebrate Mother's Day, the Gals are joined by Grace Aki from Tell Me on a Sunday Podcast to discuss both the 1934 and 1959 versions of Imitation of Life. Grace and the Gals breakdown the differences between the two versions and how they both diverge from the book, praise Fredi Washington, Louise Beavers, and Juanita Moore, touch on the well-meaning nature of Claudette Colbert, dive into the problematic casting of Susan Kohner, and the Lana Turner of it all. Plus Grace shares a wonderful story about her grandmother, mother, and the 1959 film. It’s our epic episode on the three Imitations of Life! Hear us discuss Fannie Hurst’s massively popular 1933 novel and its two popular film adaptations: John M. Stahl’s restrained 1934 version, the first Hollywood movie to look seriously, if cautiously, at the impact of white supremacy and racial inequality in America, and Douglas Sirk’s strategically lurid, early civil rights-era version, from 1959. We attempt to thoroughly debunk the “trash” reputation of Hurst’s eccentric, elaborately written, and harrowing novel, which not only addresses white supremacy but also harpoons the nuclear family and the American religion of success, while putting mother-daughter emotional ambivalence at its imaginative center. We then go on to discuss some of the reasons for the changes from page to screen, and a blatantly political addition to the story in the original Stahl script that didn’t make it past the censors. Warning for as much disturbing content as you can imagine this topic occasioning, and then some. The final Claudette Colbert nominee for 1934, Imitation of Life attempts to deal with issues of racism, passing, and white supremacy in America. The first movie in this project that really had its claws removed by the Hays Code (a full year before it was universally enforced), this is at least a fascinating artifact in the history of Hollywood’s failed attempts to tell stories dealing with racism.

What are the secrets you're carrying around, and what would happen if you dropped them? This week's guest is Tim Kirkman, a storyteller with a knack for exploring the things people don't say.
