Outdoor movie night and a mysterious baby shower. Another one of Joe's job updates.A little backstory: During the LA fires, Joe was near the Eton fire, Sasha was right by the Kenneth fire, and we were checking in on everyone -- each other, our friends, anyone who crossed our minds. This is when we remembered something important: we're old friends with a lot of ridiculous history. So we decided to make it a thing—a weekly check-in where we catch up, talk about all the stuff outside the usual episode topics, reminisce about the Golden Age of Improv, spill the hot goss, and share whatever pop culture or art has us hooked that week. These weekly check-ins are now living over on Patreon. Meet the talented Rich Sohn! After being introduced to improv in college, he moved to Chicago in 1987, so he's definitely a seasoned pro in the Improv world. He studied, taught and directed at the Annoyance Theatre, IO and, Second City. As a teacher, he was at The Annoyance Theatre where Rich primarily found his voice and approach. His teaching style is highly influenced by Mick Napier. He moved to LA in 2017 and now teaches at The Pack Theater. He has directed, written and performed hours and hours of comedy content. Designed curriculum to help professionals and students find and perfect their voice. And improvisation has remained at the root of everything he does. We talked about what he looks for in his students and his teaching style. I think you'll admire Rich as much as I do!
Send us a textEvery season of the podcast has to end. It always makes us sad but we know we need a bit of a break to focus on improving the podcast, other projects, and of course, getting some needed rest. On this episode, Beaveman, Swan, and Nolan talk about poop, disease, dumb scenario based questions, and whatever other irrelevant nonsense seems to pop in their heads. Big surprise, it is an improve podcast with no structure. Will that change, most likely not. Thank you for an amazing season 6. Here's to season 7 starting the first week of September. What do improv comedy and planning have in common? According to Phil Green, AICP —more than you'd think. A practicing planner and seasoned improviser, Phil shares with APA Editor in Chief Meghan Stromberg how tools from the improv stage—like active listening, quick thinking, and collaborative storytelling—can empower planners to navigate tough questions, community tensions, and even mundane fence permits with humor and humanity. In this episode of People Behind the Plans, Phil brings to life the unexpected intersections of comedy and civic engagement, explaining how improv can boost a planner's confidence, empathy, and ability to lead with presence. He reflects on his unconventional path from stand-up to site plans, how improv helped him feel more connected and resilient, and why embracing failure (and fun) makes for stronger teams and better outcomes. Whether you're facing a high-stakes public hearing, a frazzled applicant, or just want to build stronger communication skills, this episode offers fresh insights—and a few good laughs—on how the art of improvisation can make planners more effective, compassionate, and present. Medium Swing Improv Practice Session (Play-Along)
Actor, improviser, and founding member of Upright Citizens Brigade Matt Walsh (Veep, Manhunt) is touring this summer with Bluebird Improv and returns to the RSC Podcast to discuss how improv differs from acting (and sometimes doesn't). Matt reveals how improv is less about creation and more about discovery; the importance of and method for learning the value of patience; how he combined both acting and improv on Veep; why scripted punchlines are sometimes not as funny as improvised punchlines; the challenge of playing a racist monster in Manhunt; and (to unintentionally paraphrase Austin Powers) the importance of remembering that when onstage, just behave.
