1480: Aspen Technologies and Industrial AI Category Growth

The Tech Blog Writer Podcast

The ongoing trend toward Industry 4.0, coupled with the pressures of 2020’s climate have accelerated the urgency of AI. Industrial organizations lack AI expertise, but it’s become a matter of survival. This is driving the creation of a new category, “Industrial AI,” with startups like C3 and legacy industrial players like Aveva and AspenTech (NASDAQ: AZPN) racing to win. In Aug., Aveva acquired an AI company to get a leg up, and AspenTech launched an entirely new business unit, AIoT Hub, to pivot its business focus entirely toward Industrial AI. AspenTech took on the approach of operationalizing Industrial AI – including (un)supervised and reinforcement learning – for industrial customers. Their aim is to accelerate time to ROI by creating a centralized AI Hub to simplify data management and build a self-optimizing plant of the future without the traditionally needed AI technical skillset. It’s still early days for Industrial AI, and there’s much to be learned. Frédéric Bastien discusses the challenges of this Industrial AI category, the different players (startups vs. legacy), and the specific AI technical approaches required for Industry 4.0.

Thinking Out Loud Radio Show

In Aug 2017 we decided to do a show that would be thought-provoking, impactful and inspiring. A show that endeavors to motivate and encourage it's listeners to be more and do more than they ever thought they could. Today, 150 shows and 20,000 streams later I believe we have done exactly that. But, we are certainly not done. There is still alot more ground yet to cover and more things that we want to accomplish with this show. I am grateful for all of the support that we have garned from our listeners as well as the guests that we have been blessed to have on the show. It has truly been a remarkable journey.  Tonight, we plan to share excerpts from three interviews that help to really define what a show is all about; Empowerment, Civic Engagement & Activism. These are 3 pillars of our show that are very important to us, and are the driving force behind the Thinking Out Loud Radio Show. We also plan to share more about these three pillars through the excerpts of the interviews.  And, of course we have another dyamic Thought of the Week designed especially for the occassion as well. We're calling it the "Gift of Adversity" this is really a spiritual observation from being quarantined because of the COVID-19 virus. Tonight show is definitely appointment listening, and we hope you do just that. Talk to you soon!

I feel like I don't say that enough. It's a blast to follow your musical world. Along the same lines, the Heroes CD is incredible. It's been getting regular play on the commute from work. Thank you for that too. I got a grin when you mentioned it on the podcast and said "you probably don't have this album." I follow your blog via RSS feed, as I have for years. Sometimes the old ways still work. Anyway, I just read the one about social media not sparking joy for you. *raises hand* Right there with you on that one. I hear more and more that employers won't hire someone without a social media presence. Does it truly matter? I've never thought so. Sounds like you're coming to the same conclusion after years of being in the trenches on that. Don't get me wrong, I appreciate the idea of immediacy, but everything seems to be immediate online. As they say, when everything is an emergency, nothing is an emergency. Unless you're one of these YouTube stars making bank on ad revenue for having millions of followers. Maybe then I'd get the need, but I don't follow any of those types. It's a weird balance. People tell me I'm old for not being on Facebook. Many in the younger generation don't bother with it either. Not sure where that leaves me. But I know what I like. I seek out podcasts and music. That's how I found you years ago. I've never had a reason to second guess. It takes all types in the world. It's like that in any business too. It just seems to me that musicians make music. As Spock told Kirk, it's your first, best destiny. Anything else is a waste of material. ;) I admire that you're willing to try new things, and I can't imagine how much of it comes down to marketing. In the end, you've built a solid product with a solid brand, and you continue to do so. It speaks for itself. I did have one old school idea... have you thought about broadcasting your podcast feed on XM radio? Or even on local FM bands (in conjunction with local Ren Faires and cons)? Then the radio stations feel the need to advertise for you. Radio is where music lives, right? You probably have considered it, but it never hurts to toss an idea out there. I've wondered why, as popular as Ren Faires are now, why there is no Ren Faire Radio. But then... this is what you do in podcast form, isn't it? Is radio not the great granddaddy of all social media? Orson Welles knew it. Freddie Mercury knew it. 80 years on, has it really changed so much? Apologies for rambling. In any case, this is a long-winded way of saying that this old school music fan appreciates you efforts. I have for years, and I will for years to come. I hope your move to Atlanta goes smoothly. Hey guys! It is Aiko with Schwagirl. I am an American English pronunciation coach. Welcome to my podcast "The Voice of English" The purpose of this podcast is to encourage English learners and also English teachers. We all share tips and points of how we can improve our English and become better communicators.   In Episode 11, I invited Miho Noguchi the bilingual MC and Coach based in Japan. Miho is an event host MC / interpreter based in Gifu, central Japan.  She started her public speaking career as a Japanese-English bilingual radio news announcer and DJ in Nagoya and shifted into her event host career in 2010.  She has hosted many international corporate events, congresses, as well as wedding receptions of international couples.  She is also a home-based voice-over talent, and is known as the Japanese GPS voice behind Google Maps app.  In 2016 her voice was replaced by a new synthetic voice system, which sparked a huge backlash on Twitter and other social media platforms. Later Google decided to put her voice back on the app and you can still hear her voice.  And in 2017  she won the title of the Japanese delegate of Mrs. Globe beauty pageant and ran for the international competition in China with 70 other contestants from around the world.  She also teaches English to those who want to become MCs or public speakers through workshops and also one-on-one online coaching. Here are my notes: Your voice is your asset!! It is amazing that a great English speaker like Miho says "I am still struggling with English" and she practices a lot! I hope that will motivate you. Analysis of the H-mode density limit in the ASDEX Upgrade tokamak using bolometry

The high confinement mode (H-mode) is the operational scenario foreseen for ITER, DEMO and future fusion power plants. At high densities, which are favourable in order to maximize the fusion power, a back transition from the H-mode to the low confinement mode (L-mode) is observed. This H-mode density limit (HDL) occurs at densities on the order of, but below, the Greenwald density. In this thesis, the HDL is revisited in the fully tungsten walled ASDEX Upgrade tokamak (AUG). In AUG discharges, four distinct operational phases were identified in the approach towards the HDL. First, there is a stable H-mode, where the plasma density increases at steady confinement, followed by a degrading H-mode, where the core electron density is fixed and the confinement, expressed as the energy confinement time, reduces. In the third phase, the breakdown of the H-mode and transition to the L-mode, the overall electron density is fixed and the confinement decreases further, leading, finally, to an L-mode, where the density increases again at a steady confinement at typical L-mode values until the disruptive Greenwald limit is reached. These four phases are reproducible, quasi-stable plasma regimes and provide a framework in which the HDL can be further analysed. Radiation losses and several other mechanisms, that were proposed as explanations for the HDL, are ruled out for the current set of AUG experiments with tungsten walls. In addition, a threshold of the radial electric field or of the power flux into the divertor appears to be responsible for the final transition back to L-mode, however, it does not determine the onset of the HDL. The observation of the four phases is explained by the combination of two mechanisms: a fueling limit due to an outward shift of the ionization profile and an additional energy loss channel, which decreases the confinement. The latter is most likely created by an increased radial convective transport at the edge of the plasma. It is shown that the four phases occur due to a coupling of these two mechanisms. These observations are in line with studies made at AUG with carbon walls, although in those discharges the energy loss was most likely caused by the full detachment of the divertor. The density of the HDL depends only weakly on the plasma current, unlike the Greenwald limit, and can be increased by high heating power, again unlike the Greenwald limit. The triangularity of the plasma has no influence on the density of the HDL, though improves the performance of the plasma, since the onset of the degrading H-mode phase occurs at higher densities. It is explicitly shown that the HDL and also the L-mode density limit are determined by edge parameters. Using pellet fueling, centrally elevated density profiles above the Greenwald limit can be achieved in stable H-modes at a moderate confinement. Future tokamaks will have intrinsic density peaking. Consequently, they will most likely operate in H-modes above the Greenwald limit.

The Perils of Black Political Power

As we are on the eve of what may be the most powerful Black achievement in U.S. history, it would be well to examine the history of Black political leadership in this country. Most historical researchers look to the 1967 election of Carl Stokes, (1927-1996), as Mayor of Cleveland, Ohio as the emergence of black political power in major American cities. Many Blacks saw this as the beginning of an age of freedom for our people. From the 1960's to now, we most certainly have been disabused of that notion. For while black political leadership has surely been a source of pride, they have not been a source of black political power. That's because as agents of the States, they must defend the interests of the State, even when this conflicts with the interests of their people. For example, let's look at the experience of Mayor Stokes. Shortly after taking office, Stokes appointed former U.S. Army Lt.-General Benjamin O. Davis, Jr. as his public safety director (a kind of super police chief). Gen. Davis, fresh from the rigors of Vietnam, ordered 30,000 rounds of hollow point (or dum-dum) bullets, items in violation of the laws of war. The object of his ire? The Cleveland branch of the Black Panther Party, and a local office of the National Committee to Combat Fascism, a Panther support group. In Aug. 1970, Gen. Davis resigned from the post, and criticized Mayor Stokes for not giving him sufficient support in his battle against radicals (like the Panthers). Stokes, the more politically adroit of the two, made Davis look bad for ordering ammo which violated the Geneva Conventions, but Stokes' personal papers revealed meetings between the two men, and their agreement on dum-dums as appropriate arms to be used against Panthers. Just because he was a Black mayor, didn't mean he wasn't dedicated to destroying a Black organization. Indeed, in times of Black uprising and mass discontent, Black mayors seem the perfect instrument of repression, for they dispel charges of racism. If Barack Obama wins the White House, it will be a considerable political achievement. It will be made possible only by the votes of millions of whites, most especially younger voters. This does not diminish such an achievement, it just sharpens the nature of it. But Black faces in high places does not freedom make. Power is far more than presence. It is the ability to meet people's political objectives of freedom, independence and material well-being. We are as far from those objectives as we were in 1967. 8/6/08 (c) '08 Mumia Abu-Jamal [Source: Nissim-Sabat, Ryan, "Panthers Set Up Shop in Cleveland," p.111; from Judson L.
