That's a spectacular, scenic route from Irishowen in County Donegal all the way down the west coast of Ireland to Kinsale in County Cork. It's broken up into 14 stages, two of which are in the area we are staying, Achill Island and Clew Bay, and Westport to Clifden. 5 Things You Should Do in County Mayo, Ireland Go to Matt Malloy's Pub in Westport. Visit Westport House and take a train around town to get to know the history behind the Irish of County Mayo Hike up Croagh Patrick, This pilgrimage area has a story that St. Patrick himself scaled this mountain and fasted atop it for 40 days way back in 441 AD. It's definitely a revered site in this area of the country, and can make for a great stop on any trip to the region. Take a boat out to Clare Island to visit O'Malley Castle, one of the castles owned by the Pirate Queen, Grace O'Malley. Take pictures all along the Wild Atlantic Way. I completed the itinerary for the trip and already I think I scheduled way too much. There are so many fine castles, cliffs, and amazing things to see, not to mention the time I hope to spend in Matt Malloy's listening to music. It's gonna be an incredible trip. I taught Kenzie it. After just two games, I was kinda done. The game drags on just way too long. Unfortunately, Kenzie is not done with it. She loves it and makes us play as often as we will let her. So I finally figured out how to endure the game. It's a quick win or lose strategy. If you're lucky enough to buy all the property as soon as possible, then demolish and win. If you're not, do your best to lose and get out of the game as soon as possible. Kind of sad. But that's what a monopoly is. If you learned about early 20th century monopolies, it wasn't much better. In fact, the woman who created the game was trying to teach people the evils of monopolies. Yet, we haven't learned. The government allowed Live Nation to create a monopoly of concert venues. Ticket sales for Taylor Swift's summer tour busted their online system. Well, actually, it was already busted thanks to bootleggers. Monopolies are one of the reasons I finished “Blue Sun”. But the song actually goes back before that, all the way back to the writing of “Monahan's Mudder's Milk”. That's when I wrote the chorus. Blue Sun. Blue Sun Another corporation with their hand on the gun Blue Sun. Blue Sun. Free yourself to run from Blue Sun. Blue Sun is the corporation in the TV show Firefly with a seemingly nefarious background. You see their imagery on Jayne's shirt, on the docks of Persephone, and other places. The blue color makes me think of the Two by Two, Hands of Blue from the episode Ariel. I can't help but wonder if a connection is there. It feels to me like Blue Sun is a monopoly that largely is in control or at least has a big blue hand in their Alliance government. And because they have a monopoly, they can do what they want. They can also destroy what they want all in the name of profit for their investors. I did my best to come up with what a bully corporation would do. That's what the first two verses are all about. It's about subjugating the people they are supposed to “serve”. They terraformed the lands of many fine worlds Then bloodied our hands with our boys and our girls They offered us cans of food that curdled And piled on chains by the ton. You see their emblem emblazoned on crates On walls, on wombs, even on your dates You may fall victim to their seductive gaze So raise up your hands to shun Now we come to the final idea that motivated writing this song. My family is from a small town in East Texas. It was never a super vibrant town. As a kid, it looked like they stopped growing as a community in prolly the 40s or 50s. But they did have a downtown area. That downtown area disappeared when Walmart moved in. Walmart's strategy was to build a big store on the edge of town. It offered low, low prices, on everything. We were all thrilled. That's where I first experienced the store. I loved it. Before long, the downtown of our local community was closed down. You've prolly heard the term “Buy Local”. It took a while for me to understand that idea. The fact is that we need to support our local community if we want to see it thrive and grow. Much like “Monahan's”, this song turns into a Woody Guthrie style protest song against corporations. Their manacles we'll cast off our tired wrists. Their suits we'll pummel with our bloodied fists Cut through the red tape and expunge the vile cyst That cripples our will to run So raise up your voice and shout to the firm Let those who control know what it feels like to squirm Their products we won't buy, but oh they shall burn For this is their will undone I love the imagery in these verses. It is very down-to-earth. And fierce. Complete with burning their products in protest. I made two recordings of this song. The Kilted Kings version features Randy Wothke on percussion. The one that looked most promising was in Sandy Springs. So we drove 30 minutes over there only to find the place was very smoky. Something I'm not big on. Happily, we were close to Pontoon Brewing Company. We stopped and had a drink while we picked a place to have dinner. We were all tired from the day. One of the closest places that sounded interesting was a Thai food restaurant. We drove over to Sweet Chili Thai Cuisine. I love Thai but never have I loved it as much as I loved it here. There were four of us. We had four appetizers, three meals and two desserts. Every, single, dish, was, AMAZING! The coconut soup was so creamy and delicious. They recommended Curry Puffs and WOW! The Basil Rolls were so fresh. The Nom Sod was delicious. Drunken Noodles, Spicy Green Beans, and Chef's Catfish special. Omg! They apparently just opened six months ago. So now is the time to go. Because this food was incredible. Oh! And the price was very reasonable for Thai food. I'm looking for more eco-friendly merch that I can create and sell at shows. I finally packaged up one such item-Travel Celtlery. How many times do you go to a lower-end restaurant where they give you a small plastic bag filled with plastic cutlery and a napkin that smells like pepper. You know what I'm talking about. I find this so frustrating because no matter how many times I order out and I tell them no silverware is needed, they bring it. What do we do with that stuff. You open it up. The plastic bag is not easily recycled. The plasticware usually goes straight into the trash. One of the things I'm trying to teach myself to do is to bring my own cup and cutlery so I don't have to use more plastic than I have to. That's why I'm trying out selling Travel Celtlery. It read, “Spock is a Scot.” I never understood that until I heard Scottish singer, Ed Miller, introduce “Green Grow the Rashes”. He joked, “I know a Scotsman who loved a woman so much. He almost told her.” The joke is that Scots are not very emotional. And yet, this song by Scotland's National Poet, Robert Burns, is one of the most beautiful, touching, and emotional songs ever written. There's naught but care on every hand, In every hour that passes, O! What signifies the life o' man, And 'twere not for the lasses O? * Green grow the rashes O! Green grow the rashes O! The sweetest hour that e'er I spent Were spent among the lasses O! The war'ly race may riches chase, And riches may soon fly them, O! But I've always been a hopeful romantic. I loved it. Brobdingnagian Bards performed it regularly even before we recorded it for our album, Real Men Wear Kilts. However, I do remember Royce Perry was an inspiration for recording that CD. Royce was the head of Clan Gunn in Texas. He was excited to have a Gunn singing Scottish songs for our clan. He was So very encouraging. I remember his gentle smile the most. It was very kind as he listened. It was us performing  this song that really made him happiest. So when I finally re-recorded it for Scottish Songs of Drinking & Rebellion. He was in my thoughts. Just read those lyrics and you'll understand. Well, if you understand basic Scots. Robert Burns was apparently quite a ladies' man. He said what was most important in life was spending time with a lady. The worldly man chases money. Money is fleeting and short lived. Just give me an hour with a woman. All the cares in the world will disappear. The last verse is my favorite. Nature did some great things. She even made man while she was an apprentice. But then she mastered the art and created women. How perfect! I don't play this song nearly enough these days since I have quite a few beautiful ballads. But it definitely stands out in my mind as being exceptional. It's also a great song to sing at your annual Burns Supper. These are fancy dinners that celebrate the poetry of Robert Burns. I've long thought that every the office buildings should have a garden on their rooftop to make the city more beautiful and to offer new ways to fight climate change. The name started as a misspelling of folk music that was happening at science fiction conventions back in the 60s. GaFilk, or Georgia Filk, is a convention that happens every year here in Atlanta, Georgia. I was first introduced to it when Brobdingnagian Bards was invited as a Super Secret Guest. We were still performing together in Austin. It's a different kind of convention. There aren't a whole bunch of panels on your favorite fandoms. It's all about the music… and the people. I was listening to a podcast called Hit Parade. They talk about the hits. The host is a Charts Nerd. Like me, he listened to Casey Kasem's Top 40 Hits back in the 80s. I wasn't quite as obsessed as he was. But I did love the show. My interest in charts really took off in the early 2000s when the Brobdingnagian Bards were topping the charts. I was able to figure out the system and how to maximize our success there. So now I have Two Charts that I keep track of each year. One is the Celtic Top 20. And just like this Free EP, it is FREE! 25:38 - “Biddy Mulligan” by Banshee in the Kitchen from Last Pint - NOT 31:38 - STORY OF CLOSE YOUR EYES & REAVERS LULLABY One of my most-popular songs since 2009 is a song called "Close Your Eyes". It's commonly known as "The Demon Lulllaby". The song was written in 2003 by filker, Daniel Glasser. It won Best Comedy Song in the 2008 Pegasus Awards. That's also the year I first heard the song. It was a I-Con Science Fiction Convention in Stony Brook, New York. I remember those filk circles fairly well. Now if you're not familiar with the word filk, that is the music of fandom. It's the music you hear at science fiction conventions. The word was first used as a misprint of folk music that was happening at conventions back in the '50s. I guess con goers liked the term, because next thing you know, filk circles exploded. The filk circles at I-Con were my first. My old band, Brobdingnagian Bards, were invited to be guests at I-Con back in 2002, I believe. I saw Emerald Rose was performing there and thought, "why on earth is a Celtic band like us playing at science fiction convention". So I booked us and realize con goers love Celtic music, and that we were also playing filk, with songs like "Do Virgins Taste Better" and "If I Had A Million Ducats". Any case, we were invited to the I-Con Filk Circle. We sang our songs and began building an audience. 2008 was our last year at the convention before we broke up. I don't remember who sang "Close Your Eyes". But I loved it. After we parted ways, I did an internet search to find the song. Lo and behold, I found it on the Pegasus Awards website. I contacted Daniel Glasser and asked if I could record the song. He was extremely generous to say yes. I had never played the song live when I recorded it in January 2009 for my CD Kilted For Her Pleasure on the North Shore in Louisiana at my friend Jamie Haeuser's house. Jamie recorded percussion on a couple of tracks for that album. As a lullaby, I kept the song pretty barebones, just me and the autoharp. And it worked. As I played it at shows, it was an immediate favorite. "The demons in your bed are gonna eat you up". One of my most-memorable moments was performing it a giant ballroom at Dragon Con in 2009. The stage was simple with me dressed in my black kilt, long hair flowing, the enormous sideburns, and an autoharp as I sang the song, pausing for comedic effect. (YouTube video)The audience was in tears by the end. It was a brilliant start to my solo career. The song was an obvious hit. I'm gonna play the song for you right now. And then I'll share the filk of the song in a moment. 37:10 - "Close Your Eyes" by Marc Gunn from Kilted For Her Pleasure 40:51 - STORY OF REAVER'S LULLABY In 2010, my first daughter was born--Kenzie. Having a daughter made this song even better. Not only do I like singing it to her. But there's no better way of finishing the song and stating, "If you enjoy this song, then your CD purchases help to pay for my daughter's therapy when she grows up." And it's true. Your purchases do help to pay for her therapy. So please.... Well, if she wasn't disturbed, then she has been when I filked the filk. I think it was 2014 when I first filked "Close Your Eyes". The song was already popular at my many shows. I started performing it at my Firefly Drinking Songs show at Gen Con the year before. It was well-loved. Now when I'm up on stage, I'm always looking to use things from the moment to include in the show. Some people complain about hecklers. I don't think I've ever met a heckler I didn't like. They just give me ammo to improve my show. The year before "Close Your Eyes" was a hit. But could I make it funnier? “Close your eyes and sleep There are... reavers in your dreams.” Reavers! Hey that works! I remember thinking. The reavers in your bed... I can't tell you why I decided to change the next line. But the response was mind-blowing. “The reavers in your bed… Are gonna eat your face!” The room erupted. Those who knew the original song already thought it was funny. But the visual of the horrifying reavers eating someone's face... well, it worked! Over the next few years, I tried changing the lyrics more to suit Firefly, but they never really came. Meanwhile, several Browncoats kept asking, "when are going to record that song?!" I set a Milestone on Patreon in 2017. If I raised enough money, I would record the song for a short EP. The goal was met. I sat down to record the song and ended up recording a whole bunch of Firefly songs. Lo and behold I had a new album. The album is called As Long As I'm Flyin'. It will be officially released on March 6, 2018. March is the only month that you will be able to buy a physical copy of the album online for the foreseeable future. So mark your calendar. Here's some of what Wikipedia has to say about Yule: “Yule is a winter festival historically observed by the Germanic peoples. Much like Christmas, it has pagan roots. Scholars connected the original celebrations of Yule to the Wild Hunt, the god Odin, and the pagan Anglo-Saxon Modraniht. Later departing from its pagan roots, Yule underwent Christianised reformulation, resulting in the term Christmastide. Some present-day Christmas customs and traditions such as the Yule log, Yule goat, Yule boar, Yule singing, and others may have connections to older pagan Yule traditions. The Saga of Hákon the Good credits King Haakon I of Norway who ruled from 934 to 961 with the Christianization of Norway as well as rescheduling Yule to coincide with Christian celebrations held at the time. The saga says that when Haakon arrived in Norway he was a confirmed Christian, but since the land was still altogether heathen and the people retained their pagan practices, Haakon hid his Christianity to receive the help of the "great chieftains". Modraniht, an event focused on collective female beings attested by Bede as having occurred among the pagan Anglo-Saxons on what is now Christmas Eve, has been seen as further evidence of a fertility event during the Yule period.” You can read more about Yuletide on Wikipedia. Now I've heard it said that JRR Tolkien wrote The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings, in part, to give England its own folk tales. So one of the things I love about my first story is that Yuletide better encapsulates the hobbit winter celebrations than say Christmas. At least in name. 4:55 - STORY OF YULETIDE During live shows, I talk about the little hobbit village that happens every three years in Kentucky. It's called ALEP, A Long Expected Party. A gross of Tolkien enthusiasts gather together at the Shaker Village to celebrate all things Lord of the Rings. Not just celebrate. To Create. Folks who go to ALEP become a part of the world Tolkien created. Yes, there are amazing stories we get from Michael Drout. But also, there's art, and writings, and costuming, and music. All by people who love Lord of the Rings so much that they create their own art. Nancy Flynn is one of those people. She enjoys my music and sends me lyrics now and again. She wrote the lyrics “The Smial or the Tree” from my CD, Sci Fi Drinking Songs. In 2012, she sent me lyrics to two Christmas songs: “Christmas in the Shire” and “Yuletide”. I loved the lyrics for both. “Christmas in the Shire” was the first song that I set to music. It's also still my favorite Christmas song that I love to hear. I love the melody. But it is nothing without the wholesome down-to-earth lyrics that accompany it. That's one of the things I love about hobbits. It's just down-to-earth. Or down-to-middle-earth as the case may be. The other song, “Yuletide” sat on my shelf for quite a bit longer. The lyrics are again down-to-earth. It's a song about how hobbits celebrate Yuletide. There are invitations to friends. There's dancing and eating. There's decorations and drinks. It's like a sneak peak at hobbit holidays. While many of the celebration examples that she uses are kind of universal for our modern day celebrations, I feel like there's something distinctly hobbit about them. That's what I wanted to capture with the music. I wrote several melodies over the years. Sadly, I didn't have a recording for any of them. So I started from scratch this year. This song was written with the vocal melody first and foremost. I feel like basic hobbit music is a hornpipe rhythm. It's fun and bouncy in 4/4 time. It's the type that you can easily sing without an instrument and still get people up dancing. So that's how I wrote the melody. I sang it. I added my autoharp. I listened to it while I was driving to Magic City Con last week. Curse him! It was really good. He's such a good storyteller. I find it frustrating that I'm not better because I would really like to do a show like that. I just don't feel it would be as good. Ah well... Summer break for the kids is making it difficult to plan ahead with podcasts. Pub Songs & Stories is coming out slower than I'd like. In June, I released... The Harpers #232: Was the harp banned by Queen Elizabeth? Hear the origins of the song Soul of a Harper by Rie Sheridan Rose. Songwriting as a parent offers its own special joys, songs about the children we love. Plus, was it horrible, the night that Paddy Murphy died? Next time, there are a couple stories by Carl Asch of Empty Hats and Adrian of Tartanic. So far the Virtual Public House CD is not selling well. I'm not sure if that's an issue of promotion (or lack thereof) or the type of CD. So if you want to own a limited-edition CD, get it now. The album will be available for just a few more months. But it won't last the year. I had some good episodes of the Irish & Celtic Music Podcast in June. I'm particularly excited about the release of The Gothard Sisters' new CD, Dragonfly. I feature several tracks and will continue to. The Brobdingnagian Bards Podcast and Celtfather Music & Travel were on hiatus.  I did release a couple Stories from the Road podcasts on Patreon though. I'm also starting to think about the next In the 'Verse podcast. I need to get back to songwriting. That podcast will help. 9:34 - VIDEOS Coffee with The Celtfather ended well. Those season finales seem to do pretty well. I started planning the themes for season 9 which will start on Thursday, August 5. I'm seriously considering signing back up to ReStream, which will once again allow me to broadcast on multiple platforms. Though, I will still stick primarily with YouTube. Maybe I'll just do one month. The re-launch of the Irish & Celtic Music Podcast YouTube channel is posing problematic. YouTube stopped allowing me to edit shows on their website. So I used a secondary website. And that's just too much work for someone who has not enough time. So I might discontinue that. My Celtfather Live concert this month had a fairly light attendance. But it was a great group of Gunn Runners. I can't tell you how happy it makes me to know there are so many people who support my music. The next Celtfather Live is a FREE SHOW. It's scheduled for Thursday, July 15 at 8 pm ET. 11:17 - IN THE STUDIO I finally finished up "By Amazing Grace", "Bright Side of Everything", "Favor of a Dance", "Kilty Pleasure", and "Breathing". I'm also gonna do that with my family. ALEP is postponed once again. So looks like Sam Gillogly and I have more time to finish our Dancing With Hobbits album. There’s the unofficial national anthem of Scotland, “Flower of Scotland”, by The Corries. The “Skye Boat Song” was a fantastic traditional Scottish song even before the lyrics were modified for the Outlander TV show. There’s the great drinking ballad, “Jock Stuart”. Not a nasty, dirty, wet hole, filled with the ends of worms and oozy smell, nor yet a dry, bare, sandy hole with nothing in it to sit down on or to eat: it was a hobbit-hole and that means comfort." - The Hobbit by JRR Tolkien What on Middle-earth is a “smial”? Well the Tolkien Gateway has the answer. “Smials were the hobbit-holes tunneled into earth mounds and hills. For generations the Hobbits dug into the earth to live. By the later Third Age the poorest Hobbits still went on living in burrows of the most primitive kind with only one window or none. For the most well-to-do hobbits, smials were luxurious versions of those primitive diggings of old. Their tunnels had rounded walls and branched to other rooms. Smials included Bag End and the smials along Bagshot Row of Hobbiton, the Great Smials of Tuckborough and Brandy Hall. The latter two were large enough to have ample room for a hundred Hobbits. When suitable sites for these large and ramifying tunnels were not everywhere to be found, many Hobbits lived in wood, brick or stone houses. This was the case with some muddy regions of the Eastfarthing, such as the Marish. "Smial" is a term used by Tolkien fans to refer to divisions of Tolkien Societies. Marc Gunn is an acclaimed musician and storyteller, on the cultural rhythm and lore of history and fantasy, and hosts the most popular Irish and Celtic music podcast out there, performs and produces his own fusion music on the autoharp, as well as hosting cultural tour "invasions" of all places Celtic! Angela is a contemporary of musicians such as Mike McGoldrick, the Farrell's, Dezi Donnelly, Angelina Carberry, John Joe and Grace Kelly, etc who grew up learning and playing together in the 80's/90's in Manchester. She released her first album 'The Gort Mile' last year which has some lovely tunes and songs (some her own pieces). Deanna was the lead singer of the Celtic rock band Jiggernaut. I remember seeing her at the Texas Scottish Festival years ago. There was a ceilidh I was leading. She sang a song a capella, and everyone in the tent held their breath as she sang. It was strong and powerful. I can’t say I knew her super well. But each time I interacted with her, I was humbled by kindness. She was a big part of the Texas Celtic community and she will be missed. Sometimes the old ways still work. Anyway, I just read the one about social media not sparking joy for you. *raises hand* Right there with you on that one. I hear more and more that employers won't hire someone without a social media presence. Does it truly matter? I've never thought so. Sounds like you're coming to the same conclusion after years of being in the trenches on that. Don't get me wrong, I appreciate the idea of immediacy, but everything seems to be immediate online. As they say, when everything is an emergency, nothing is an emergency. Unless you're one of these YouTube stars making bank on ad revenue for having millions of followers. Maybe then I'd get the need, but I don't follow any of those types. It's a weird balance. People tell me I'm old for not being on Facebook. Many in the younger generation don't bother with it either. Not sure where that leaves me. But I know what I like. I seek out podcasts and music. That's how I found you years ago. I've never had a reason to second guess. It takes all types in the world. It's like that in any business too. It just seems to me that musicians make music. As Spock told Kirk, it's your first, best destiny. Anything else is a waste of material. ;) I admire that you're willing to try new things, and I can't imagine how much of it comes down to marketing. In the end, you've built a solid product with a solid brand, and you continue to do so. It speaks for itself. I did have one old school idea... have you thought about broadcasting your podcast feed on XM radio? Or even on local FM bands (in conjunction with local Ren Faires and cons)? Then the radio stations feel the need to advertise for you. Radio is where music lives, right? You probably have considered it, but it never hurts to toss an idea out there. I've wondered why, as popular as Ren Faires are now, why there is no Ren Faire Radio. But then... this is what you do in podcast form, isn't it? Is radio not the great granddaddy of all social media? Orson Welles knew it. Freddie Mercury knew it. 80 years on, has it really changed so much? Apologies for rambling. The Irish were trying to hold on to their heritage. Inspiration is a funny friend. It finds you and guides you. It takes you to strange and wonderful places. It introduces you to heroes. I started playing Celtic music in 1999... by accident. I had three "Celtic" songs in my song repertoire: "The Scotsman", "Irish Ballad" by Tom Lehrer, and an original Enya-esque song with nonsensical lyrics called "Lounging in La La Land". I was practicing on the South Mall at the University of Texas at Austin when red-haired gentleman asked if I'd like to perform at a Renaissance festival. As a Dungeons & Dragons nerd, I was so excited I asked my friend Andrew McKee to start a band with me. Soon the Brobdingnagian Bards found new Celtic music heroes and inspiration. For me, it was The Wolfe Tones, Christy Moore, The Irish Balladeers, and some random cassette that was called Irish Drinking Songs. That was my introduction to Celtic music. Those were my first Celtic music heroes. Later, I added Ed Miller, Serious Kitchen (featuring Vicki Swan & Jonny Dyer), Dougie MacLean, The Elders, Gaelic Storm, Clandestine, and even Bing Crosby. If it wasn't for America, the traditional music of Ireland might no longer exist. America saved Irish music. That's the premise behind my 2014 album I recorded with Jamie Haeuser, How America Saved Irish Music. I expected more of a backlash when I released the album title that was a parody of the book How the Irish Saved Civilization. I only got one nasty email. I started immersing myself in Irish music in 1999. I learned a lot about Irish culture and music over the years. The Irish were forced out of Ireland. Their music traveled around the globe. It integrated with other cultures. Eventually, it found its way home. When it did, it had changed. Blossomed and grew, yes. But changed as well We all know that the jigs and reels are the backbone of Irish tunes. But underneath it, I heard something fascinating. It was the similarities between Irish and American rhythm. The guitar was the clue. American guitarists changed music around the world. Listen to any guitarist playing Irish music and you will hear American rock-n-roll as its rhythmic backbone. Irish guitar is rock-n-roll guitar underneath a reel and a jig. This makes a little more sense when you think of Irish songs like "Johnny I Hardly Knew Ye". That's the Irish version of the American Civil War song "When Johnny Comes Marching Home". The Irish took a great American melody and gave it their own twist. In a sense, How America Saved Irish Music is nothing new. Jamie Haeuser and I fused American rhythm, jazz, and blues to Irish immigration songs to create our own exploration of the Irish musical diaspora. This weekend, I'm heading to join the Kilted Kings at the Mid-South Renaissance Faire. I want to share with some thoughts about the show and what you can expect from our performances. Greetings. My name is Marc Gunn. This show is about the many amazing experiences I have as a musician and a traveler. It's funny how one show leads to another. The Brobdingnagian Bards began our career at Excalibur Fantasy Faire in March 1999. As the faire ended, a whole bunch of entertainers and patrons said, you should go to the Castle Muskgee Renaissance faire. When that one ended, they said, you should check out this faire. Those recommendations got us all the way to, our then dream faire, the Texas Renaissance Festival. That's sort of what happened with the Mid-South Renaissance Faire. I met the entertainment director 3-4 years ago at the Louisiana Renaissance Festival. Everyone was talking about this new faire. I couldn't make it at that time. It wasn't until I got invited to ShadowCon that it became a possibility. You see, I had a booth at ShadowCon right next door to the faire's booth. Beth and I had great conversations all weekend. She invited me to contact her. But again, there wasn't much likelihood. At least until I found out that my wife was gonna be in Memphis this fall. So I emailed the faire and started a dialogue. They wanted more than just a soloist. They wanted a full band to fill their pub, a three-piece in fact. So I decided to reunite Kilted Kings PLUS one. Randy Wothke will once again join me on stage. Randy is the leader and percussionist of The Rogues, a bagpipe and drum quartet from Houston, Texas. He's an incredible musician. It was a great honor to record our album Name On My Soul with him. And incidentally, we have a new Christmas single that will be available online very soon. I also invited String, aka Matthew Trautwein, to play fiddle. String plays with the Renaissance rock band, The Lost Boys. I first met him at the Georgia Renaissance Festival over a decade. Last year, he came to the Louisiana Ren Faire to fill for Randy when he was already booked. String is fantastic and one of the nicest people you'll meet to boot. Oh! And I should point out that The Lost Boys have a brand new album that should be available soon if it's not already. Since it's a Kilted Kings show, a lot of the music that we will play is from our debut album. You'll hear "Slainte Mhaith", "Prettiest Hobbit", "Wild Mountain Thyme", "Flower of Scotland", and of course, "Name On My Soul". You'll also hear songs like "Ride On" and "Mingulay Boat Song". With a fiddler, I'm really looking forward to playing my instrumental tunes without singing them as well. So listen for a new arrangement of "Marionette Jig" and "Clogden More". There are a lot of things to see at the Mid-South Renaissance Faire aside from us. There's music from Wind, Wood & Wire, Frieman the Minstrel, Silver Penny, and bagpipes from my friends of Haggis Rampant. Plus, story telling from Melandra of the Woods. There's jousting, a Mad Hatter, and knighting ceremony. The Lords of Adventure are there. They are brilliant comedy and sword fighting duo. There's also something called Armchair Wizards, which is listed as on-stage role-playing game show. Connor O'Carriag is doing magic and mystery. I'm happy to see my friends Arr & Tarr the Trolls will be there with kids comedy and fun. Lord Larry Longfellow does magic & comedy and Alima Tribe offers belly dancing. You'll also find fighting demonstrations and historical reenactments with the SCA and Amtgard. Look for Kilted Kings out there for two weekends, the 13th and 14th, and the 20th and 21st.
