Happy Valentine's Day! I have a love song story to share with you from my newest CD, Selcouth. Find how my next album, Come Adventure With Me, is progressing. I added another February gig to my calendar. I share things no one ever told me about running. And is Arbor Day in February? This is Sci Fi Pub Songs & Stories #265 0:24 - “Galway Shawl (live)” by Marc Gunn from Camping Trip 2022 6:13 - WELCOME TO SCI FI PUB SONGS & STORIES I am Marc Gunn. Thanks to everyone on Patreon who voted for the next Internet Concert theme. Next month's theme is Irish music for St Patrick's Day. In April, we'll sing Irish Drinking Songs for Cat Lovers. Read the Daily Journal from my Celtic Invasion of Loch Lomond. Oh! Make sure you subscribe to Sci Fi Pub Songs & Stories. I'm sharing songs I recorded on a camping trip last fall. They're kinda romantic too! 8:47 - COME ADVENTURE WITH ME… Is the title of my next album. I did a Kickstarter for it about this time last year. It was a huge success, fully funded a few days into the campaign. I gave myself until July to actually release the album to supporters. But that's not good enough. I'm gonna try to release the digital music to supporters by my birthday, March 17. Will that happen? We shall see. Right now, I have 8 songs fully completed. I have four more that are being edited. So I'm well on the way to completing it by that date. There are several other tracks. I still haven't come up with a good album pin idea. But I'm hopeful I can figure that out in the next few weeks. But I am super excited that the project is almost done. Because I have three other albums to work on: Dancing With Hobbits, Another Faire to Remember by Brobdingnagian Bards, and whatever the next album will be… I have an idea or two… 12:07 - “Wherever I May Roam (live)” by Marc Gunn from Selcouth 14:55 - DOWNLOAD MY FREE EP You can download all of my songs in this show. Kansas City Renaissance Festival was one of the biggest and the coolest gig we had booked to that date. They paid us to fly to KC from Austin, Texas for several weekends. They put us up in a hotel. We hung out with 3 Pints Gone. We made a lot of new fans. We were even hired to perform at a wedding. I don't remember all of the details surrounding the writing of “When She Held Me In Her Arms”. But that festival stands out in my mind. I remember writing the song in the hotel after a long day at faire. It flowed out of me, filled with so much hope, love, and romance about finding true love and never turning back. Andrew and I recorded it shortly after that. We went into the studio. The Bards recording was decent enough, but the performance was way too fast. So it did not end up on A Faire to Remember or Songs of Ireland. But when I was trying to put together a compilation of music so we could book some wedding gigs, I added that song to A Celtic Renaissance Wedding. But I was never really happy with it as a recording. Nevertheless, I continued to sing the song over the years. When I met Gwen in 2009, I sang it to her at MileHiCon in Denver. She was living in Virginia at the time. But she flew to Colorado to be with me for that con. It took another five years before I recorded it again, and some years after that before I dug up the recording and the guitar additions by Daniel I Briggs before I finally sent it to Sam Gillogly to add fiddle. That was when I knew the song was finally done. I love the result. Best part about it for me is when I come to that line about “twenty years later I've not regretted a day.” Then I realize that Gwen and I are now on 13 years of marriage. Wow! Mind blown! And yup, no regrets! Here's the lyrics: When She Held Me In Her Arms Lyrics and music Marc Gunn Through a market, I wandered and prayed That I'd find me a woman I might marry some day. Well, I never dreamed when I prayed that prayer That the woman I longed for was standing there. When she held me in her arms that night, I held her close, and I held her tight. And I swore that day forth, I'd love her all of me life. When she held me in her arms that night. She smelled of the sweetest lilac skin. And I admit it now it drew me in Oh, her voice cast a spell I could not disobey. Every word was a river that swept me away. Oh, the market became a more beautiful place: The flowers more fragrant, and the clothing all lace. And her eyes, oh, her eyes! They begged me to stay And twenty years later, I've not regretted a day. 20:15 - “When She Held Me In Her Arms” by Marc Gunn from Selcouth 23:01 - JOIN THE CLUB The show is brought to you by my Gunn Runners on Patreon. It made a huge impact on my life. But I also realized that most everything I knew about running was wrong! You don't have to warm up before running. I know. This sounds like sacrilege. But I don't like flexing and stretching before I run. Instead, I just start walking. That's all the warm up I need. You don't have to run constantly. Just because you say you're going for a run doesn't mean you are running non-stop. It's tiring. So I walk. Some days I walk a LOT. Other days a rarely stop. But almost always walk on my “run”. Run up hills for an extra workout. One of my running mates set this idea in my head. You can't walk up a hill. You have to run up it. Hills are now my favorite part of my run. Shoes don't need to be tight. I spent the first year trying to get my shoes to fit “right”. I tightened them, cut off the circulation. It was miserable. Now, they are fairly snug. But not tight. Get good running shoes. That really helps a lot, especially if you're running on pavement, which is the easiest, most-accessible way to run. You'll also need to replace them at least once a year depending on how much you run. Listen to podcasts to stay entertained while running. My biggest challenge with running before I got AirPods was staying entertained. Podcasts make a huge difference. Most days, I enjoy the Irish & Celtic Music Podcast. But many days, I use it as a time to catch up on whatever my podcast of the moment is. Some days it's okay just to walk. Going back to not running constantly. If you're tired or just uninspired. It's okay to walk. Take it easy. Stroll. You'll get back to it soon enough. Running is the best way to lose weight. I've never been overweight. But when I finally started running, the aerobic activity is what finally got me in control of how much I weighed. Wireless Headphones are the best. One of my excuses for not exercising years ago was those dang dangly headphone wires. When I finally got wireless headphones, my world was changed. Humidity matters for temperature. This morning the temperature was 39 degrees. But with 78% humidity, it felt like 31 degrees. What a big difference whether you're hot or cold. How should you dress? Again humidity matters. But here's a rough guide for cold weather. Wear short sleeves and shorts when the temperature is in the 60s. Long sleeve and shorts in the 50s. Long sleeve and long pants in the 40s. And of course, make sure your head is covered and maybe an extra shirt in the 30s. You can read more of my thoughts on it in my blog. 35:35 - “Naked” by Marc Gunn from Camping Trip 2022 38:27 - ARBOR DAY IN FEBRUARY? National Arbor Day is celebrated in April. What you may not know is that each state celebrates Arbor Day from January to May depending on the regional season for planting trees. The State of Georgia celebrates its Arbor Day on the third Friday in February. It is a day to reflect on the importance of trees in our state and across our nation. Scientific research is increasingly adding to the evidence that trees are essential to global environmental health. So go plant a tree, play outside, enjoy the beauty of trees, create art inspired by trees, or honor trees in any way that pleases you! That's all according to Trees Atlanta. When is your state's Arbor Day? Oh! Mark your calendar for April 29. I'm going back to The Lost Druid. But I'm not doing it the regular way. I'm biking there. If you're able to bike there or carpool or reduce your own environmental impact that day, as well, that'd be brilliant. Come join us! If you love this episode, then share it with a friend. You can send one of the MP3s from your EP of the Month or just ask them to listen to the show. Maybe tell them one thing that really inspired you. Just spread the word. 42:00 - “When She Held Me In Her Arms” by Brobdingnagian Bards from A Celtic Renaissance Wedding 44:27 - CREDITS Thanks for listening to Sci Fi Pub Songs & Stories. My name is Marc Gunn. I am a Celtic musician and podcaster. This show is dedicated to the indie Celtic musicians. Please support these artists. Share the show with your friends. And find more episodes at celticmusicpodcast.com. You can also support this podcast on Patreon. We have a bit of a different show today. I told my graphic designer, Miranda Nelson, that the St Patrick’s Day show would be the 500th episode of the podcast. She thought about it and came back and asked, “would you mind if I collected some audio feedback from some of the artists on the show.” I said,” sure! That sounds great!” I’ll be honest, I didn’t expect much of a response. But I remembered that she suggested this when I started compiling this 500th episode. She forwarded me some feedback via email. I looked through them and didn’t see any audio. “Oh well,” I thought. “Less than I expected, but that’s fine.” Then I noticed one band mentioned something about including audio in their email. But I never got that. So I emailed and asked Miranda where that audio was. Her response, “it’s in the folder you set up on Google Drive.” Oh yeah! I did do that, didn’t I? I opened up the folder and was floored to find over 60 recordings by Celtic bands wishing me a happy 500th episode. Wow! Ye know a couple pieces are easy to pop into an episode. But I didn’t think about how to include ALL OF THESE pieces? So what should I do for this show? Instead of me introducing bands and songs, I’m gonna let the artists do it themselves. I will play their congratulations as a way of introducing their music. Course that means if you want to find out the name of the song or tune, you will need to visit the shownotes at CelticMusicPodcast.com or just check your podcatcher. Because each track has a time stamp so you can easily look it up. That said, I’ll have a few moments to break up the music and say hi. But for the most part this is just music and congratulations. I want to thank Miranda Nelson Designs for all of her hard work in making this happen. Miranda has a whole bunch of Celtic shirt designs you should check out at mirandanelsondesigns.com. And I want to thank everyone who has supported this podcast over the past 16 years. And without further adieu, let’s meet the bands. THANK YOU PATRONS OF THE PODCAST! My husband and I live in Deep East Texas, but on St. Patrick’s Day Eve, we had the rare and wonderful opportunity to see the Chieftains perform in the nearby town of Tyler, Texas! We wore our Celtic finery (photo attached) and enjoyed a splendid show. We also loved the opening act, an Irish/Americana/folk fusion group called Switchback. Thank you for all you do to promote Celtic music!" Steve Cahill sent a St Patrick's Day photo: "Having a great time holding onto a beautiful night St. Patrick’s Day 2019! Slainte!" Jan Czenkusch sent some St Patrick's Day photos from 2019: "After church we went to our son's soccer game. I feel like I don't say that enough. It's a blast to follow your musical world. Along the same lines, the Heroes CD is incredible. It's been getting regular play on the commute from work. Thank you for that too. I got a grin when you mentioned it on the podcast and said "you probably don't have this album." I follow your blog via RSS feed, as I have for years. Sometimes the old ways still work. Anyway, I just read the one about social media not sparking joy for you. *raises hand* Right there with you on that one. I hear more and more that employers won't hire someone without a social media presence. Does it truly matter? I've never thought so. Sounds like you're coming to the same conclusion after years of being in the trenches on that. Don't get me wrong, I appreciate the idea of immediacy, but everything seems to be immediate online. As they say, when everything is an emergency, nothing is an emergency. Unless you're one of these YouTube stars making bank on ad revenue for having millions of followers. Maybe then I'd get the need, but I don't follow any of those types. It's a weird balance. People tell me I'm old for not being on Facebook. Many in the younger generation don't bother with it either. Not sure where that leaves me. But I know what I like. I seek out podcasts and music. That's how I found you years ago. I've never had a reason to second guess. It takes all types in the world. It's like that in any business too. It just seems to me that musicians make music. As Spock told Kirk, it's your first, best destiny. Anything else is a waste of material. ;) I admire that you're willing to try new things, and I can't imagine how much of it comes down to marketing. In the end, you've built a solid product with a solid brand, and you continue to do so. It speaks for itself. I did have one old school idea... have you thought about broadcasting your podcast feed on XM radio? Or even on local FM bands (in conjunction with local Ren Faires and cons)? Then the radio stations feel the need to advertise for you. Radio is where music lives, right? You probably have considered it, but it never hurts to toss an idea out there. I've wondered why, as popular as Ren Faires are now, why there is no Ren Faire Radio. But then... this is what you do in podcast form, isn't it? Is radio not the great granddaddy of all social media? Orson Welles knew it. Freddie Mercury knew it. 80 years on, has it really changed so much? Apologies for rambling. In any case, this is a long-winded way of saying that this old school music fan appreciates you efforts. I have for years, and I will for years to come. I hope your move to Atlanta goes smoothly. Inspiration is a funny friend. It finds you and guides you. It takes you to strange and wonderful places. It introduces you to heroes. I started playing Celtic music in 1999... by accident. I had three "Celtic" songs in my song repertoire: "The Scotsman", "Irish Ballad" by Tom Lehrer, and an original Enya-esque song with nonsensical lyrics called "Lounging in La La Land". I was practicing on the South Mall at the University of Texas at Austin when red-haired gentleman asked if I'd like to perform at a Renaissance festival. As a Dungeons & Dragons nerd, I was so excited I asked my friend Andrew McKee to start a band with me. Soon the Brobdingnagian Bards found new Celtic music heroes and inspiration. For me, it was The Wolfe Tones, Christy Moore, The Irish Balladeers, and some random cassette that was called Irish Drinking Songs. That was my introduction to Celtic music. Those were my first Celtic music heroes. Later, I added Ed Miller, Serious Kitchen (featuring Vicki Swan & Jonny Dyer), Dougie MacLean, The Elders, Gaelic Storm, Clandestine, and even Bing Crosby. So of course many of these you have heard on my podcasts. Who are your Celtic music heroes? Welcome to the Pub Songs Podcast, the virtual Public House for Celtic culture and change through music. Every year, I share ghoulishly fun Celtic songs with a fun Halloween twist. It's like costuming in song. You can watch the show live or watch the replay on YouTube if you miss the concert. My Top Irish & Celtic Music Playlist is newly updated on Spotify. For the past couple months, I've accidentally published episodes with explicit language. As soon as I recognized my error, I fixed the files on our host server. Unfortunately, many platforms host files on their own servers instead of Libsyn's. This inspired a change in how I release shows. In the future, Apple Podcasts will be the only clean podcast. Explicit language may show up on Spotify or Stitcher or other podcatchers that don't pull the file directly from Libsyn each time. But if you listen on Apple Pocasts or even our free app, they will be clean if I catch it soon enough. Second, some folks have asked why many older shows don't appear in the app. Apple Podcasts only allows the most-recent 300 episodes to appear. So again, if you want better access to all of the shows, go get our free app on iTunes or Amazon. Finally, I've been advertising on Facebook for a few years now to promote the podcast and attract new folks. I would love your help in doing more. I recently asked The Selkie Girls to record one for the Women of Irish & Celtic Music. It was a huge success. I'd love to get some testimonials from you that can be turned into 30 second ads. But I am not a fan of corporate influence. Certainly not in politics, but also not in the music I create and share. That’s one of the reasons that the Irish & Celtic Music Podcast supports independent Celtic musicians. I want to help the artists who don’t have a record label or a giant production company behind them. They are doing everything themselves. Just like we are. Your support of this podcast helps with that mission. This show is listener supported. Instead of trying to find advertisers, I've decided to let your generosity fund the creation, production, and promotion of the show. You'll get episodes before regular listeners, discounts on merch, and when we hit a milestone, you get extra special episodes, including a bonus episode of the Celtic Christmas Podcast that will come out next month. I want to thank our newest patrons of the podcast: Howard M., Bob H., Martin K., Glenn N., Jay M., Robert L., Maggie H., Mike C., John D., Stefan J., Kylie D.. Thanks also to Mary M. who raised her pledge. And finally, I want to give a huge thanks to Marianne Ludwig. She is one of the all new Celtic Legends. This tier is newly updated. Celtic Legends pledge a minimum of $25 per month. You see, when you pledge on Patreon, you can pledge per episode, but you can also set a maximum amount you're willing to donate to the podcast per month. If you're a Song Henger, you can pledge $5 per episode and limit it to four episodes (5 is the rare maximum I ever release in a month). But you can also limit it to one or two episodes and pay just $5 or $10 per month. As a Celtic Legend, you can pledge $25 per episode and then limit your maximum amount per month to $25. At the beginning of every month, I will read your name and all of our Celtic Legends to the community in thanks. Email a voicemail message to celticpodcast@gmail.com Donald Willms emailed: Hi Mark, I found myself laying under the prairie stars with your voice and tunes tickling my ears. My sister and I pulled into the Indian Head Campground after dark while driving through Saskatchewan. I was about to pull out my tent but couldn’t bring myself to put a nylon veil between my eyelids and the endless heavens. If only the wee eye in my phone could capture the enormous beauty before me as the crescent moon rises and comet dust blazes fiery streaks above. Cheers! These words may have to suffice…" Charles Morley in Alabama replied to the Celtic Music Magazine email: "Really appreciate your site and messages, Marc. You do a great service to the ITM community. Don't have much of a chance to listen regularly but you present the best of a wide-ranging genre of music that would otherwise be impossible to track down and experience. News of new music (CDs etc.) is priceless, especially for the American audience. Keep up the good work!" Mike O'Byrne emailed: "Hi Marc, I thought about the podcast this Saturday as I was making a static line parachute jump with the Phantom Airborne Brigade, a group of former and current military parachutists who get together every month at Zephyrhills, Florida. Nothing like having some good music as you float down under that big round chute. I’m still replaying your Memorial Day Special, one of your best IMHO. If you know of any other Celtic music-loving former military airborne folks, send them our way. Age is no limitation. I am 74." Ross McMath emailed: "Hello, I listen to the podcast every day at work. In moments when a great reel or tune is being played it provides my whole being with joy. I copy all my favourite songs to be added to a few playlists I have going on Spotify (Celtic and Soft Celtic) - there are over 160 songs on the playlist already with more in line to be added. Thank you so much for all your efforts in finding and producing all this amazing music for an under-listened to but fantastic genre. Kind regards, Ross"

Loved it! I'll have to go pick up the cd. Keep up the amazing work with the podcast! Don't worry, I also listen to the new episodes but regularly return to the early ones that fueled my budding obsession with Celtic music in middle school. I hope to see you live sometime in New Orleans! I saw Beth Patterson play at a restaurant a few months ago and recognized her voice immediately. Unfortunately I was too star struck to tell her that I had listened to her "Ye Jacobites By Name" (my favorite rendition) for years on your podcast. I wanted to say thank you very much for sharing my first single on your page, I really really appreciate that. Good luck with everything and have a great day!" Victoria Mathis emailed on Facebook: "Hello, I just wanted to answer your request for messages tonight. You're my favorite evening Irish and Celtic music channel on Roku. The music you play often reminds me of my Irish Grandmother who would sing many family songs, some were great old drinking tunes too. My very Scottish Grandfather would laugh along to her funny songs and play his auto harp. We would sing and laugh drinking our root beer ice cream floats while the adults enjoyed their beverages too. I miss those days while I still enjoy doing the exact same traditions with my modern era family. Keep up the awesome work, you remind me of the words of a forgotten song at least once a night." Carl Garman emailed a photo on Facebook: "I've been listening to your podcasts for almost two years now and I love them. I listen to them while making powder horns. It's relaxing just listening to the music while doing something from the 17th &18th century's. Thank you for bring this to us. Keep up the great work!"

I finished up a video challenge on YouTube last month. It was called Video Every Day in April. I happily completed the challenge. So you can watch 30 new videos in a playlist I created. They are not all music. Some are vlogs for Gunn Runners and others are for musicians. That said, I have a bunch of new videos I've released. Every Tuesday, I put out a new music video. Right now, it's just me singing songs. But in the future, I hope to have more produced official music videos. In the meantime, I hope you'll check out my videos of "She's Shiny", "Browncoat Baby", "Spancil Hill" "Jasper Tabby Kitty Cat-y", "Lord of the Pounce" and "Molly Malone". I think the videos are getting better. I'd love your thoughts. I released two new singles to Patrons. The one in April is a comedy song called "Why Do You Torture Me?". The May one is of the "Mingulay Cat Song". There's also a podcast all about that episode on Celtfather Music & Travel. Check the link in the shownotes for details.

I've been listening to your podcast for a few years now, and have always loved discovering new bands and artists every week. Last night, I had the wonderful opportunity to go see a show by a band called the Recollective, a fairly new Celtic group. I wasn't sure if you'd heard of them, but if not, you should definitely check them out!! They played an outstanding concert, and they were all very lovely people. Thanks so much for all your hard work in creating your awesome show! Cheers" Hank Woodward emailed: "Hi Marc, Just want to pass along another huge thank you for all you do in bringing us wonderful music through the Irish & Celtic Music podcast. Also wanted to relate a great musical experience I got to share with my son Jackson (rising 9th grade violist) about a month ago. We got to see Mithril perform with the local Johnson City (TN) Symphony Orchestra. I got to talk a bit with the fiddler, Tom Morely, and let him know that I first heard their music on the Irish & Celtic Music podcast. The performance was doubly special to us, as three of the performers in the orchestra we know personally through the music school (Suzuki Talent Education of Appalachia), where my son and I take our viola lessons. This is a show of Rebel Songs. From traditional Irish rebel songs to rebel songs inspired by Firefly, you'll hear a fun mix of songs to get your blood boilin' with music from Marc Gunn, Derek Warfield & The Young Wolfe Tones, Brobdingnagian Bards, The Kilt Lifters, Crikwater, Marc Gunn & The Dubliners' Tabby Cats, Bedlam Bards, 3 Pints Gone, Kilted Kings, Ed Miller. Listen and share. Then subscribe for 5 Free MP3s at http://pubsong.net/. Before we get started, I want to let you know that my next album of Firefly music is now being funded on Kickstarter. It's called "As Long As I'm Flyin'". You have until May 18, 2017 to make a pledge if you want a physical CD. After that go to FireflyDrinkingSongs.com. I started compiling this episode at the beginning of 2017. I planned to use it as a platform to share my anger and frustration with the Trump administration's assault on civil rights, health care and the environment. But I decided not to. Overall, that's not what I do musically. Instead, I'll let the songs speak for themselves. Politics is a huge part of Celtic culture. I heard a quote by Irish songwriter Frank Harte on the Irish Music Stories podcast (episode 2) that said, "Those in power write the history. Those who suffer write the songs." For that reason, many of the best traditional Irish songs are rebel songs. They are the songs of people who suffer. When I started playing rebel songs with the Brobdingnagian Bards, we played them, not for the politics, but because they were powerful songs. This show is dedicated to rebel songs in general. The first half has some more traditional rebel songs. The second half are the not-so-traditional ones. And I promise to leave my politics out of any discussion. Pub Talk Celtfather Tuesdays. You might notice that this show came out on Tuesdays. I'm trying to better manage my content. I put out the Irish & Celtic Music Podcast on Thursdays. If you love acoustic Celtic music, you will find no better place to find great Celtic music than at Renaissance Festivals. Yes, I know the Celts had nothing to do with the "Renaissance", but Celtic music is one of the most-popular musical styles found at Ren faires. It's one of the last places where you can find true folk music without electric instruments or drum kits. Today, you'll hear a lot of great Celtic songs and a few tunes from Sarah Marie Mullen, The Poxy Boggards, Kilted Kings, Abby Green, Andrew McKee, The Ravens, 3 Pints Gone, Grey Aengus, Shillelagh!, Celtic Squall, Alabannach, The New Minstrel Revue, Cantiga, Minstrosity, Bounding Main, Lost Boys, Three Quarter Ale. Hi Marc, I've been meaning to email you for awhile now, but have been remiss in getting it out. It's actually my birthday today and the latest Irish & Celtic Music podcast was a great present! My son is also performing tonight, as he plays Viola in the 7th grade orchestra at his middle school. Just a couple of weeks ago we both we're in recital at our local Suzuki school (my piece was Loch Lommond). Sorry I'm rambling here, but just want to say how great the podcast continues to be and thank you for all the work you put into it. I usually listen while I'm walking and here are a couple of pictures of springtime in East Tennessee. Thanks again for you do on the podcast. Slainte! Today's show is brought to you by Celtic Invasion Vacations If you are listening to this podcast then you probably dream of traveling to Ireland or Scotland. So I have one piece of advice. Do it! I'm not saying you should join me on one of my Celtic Invasion Vacations. I'm not saying you should join another tour group. But travel. Go. Right now. Mark Twain wrote: "Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness, and many of our people need it sorely on these accounts. Broad, wholesome, charitable views of men and things cannot be acquired by vegetating in one little corner of the earth all one's lifetime." There was no greater evidence of this for me than when I took my one and a half old daughter to Ireland in 2012. You could almost see a mind explosion as her linguistic and mental skills grew through our travels. It is the same with adults. Traveling to Ireland or Scotland, or wherever, will change your life for the better forever. Stop waiting for the "right moment". Start planning now.
