Another Faire to Remember is our 10th full-length, studio album. We are now funding the album on Kickstarter. Click here to make a pledge. In 2001, we released our fourth album. A Faire to Remember was a tribute to our love of Renaissance festivals. It featured our pick of the Top 10 most-popular Renaissance festivals that we had seen in the two years since we started playing music. Then it had some other found favorites like "Do Virgins Taste Better Medley", "Irish Ballad", "A Fairy Story", Monty Python's "Always Looking on the Bright Side of Life", plus our hit song, "If I Had a Million Ducats.". The album was a smashing success. A years after it's release, my step-mom was at a party talking with someone. She mentioned me and said I played with the Brobdingnagian Bards. They person responded, "Brobdingnagian Bards?! They're legendary!" I don't know about that. But the album was a big part of our success. It includes a bunch of our early-on, most-popular songs. Another Faire to Remember is a continuation of that triumphant album. We're recording it 23 years after that hit album. But we're not just making a B-side. Instead, we're showing our growth as musicians and as songwriters. You will hear several traditional songs on the album, but you'll also hear our songwriting. We are actively making new music for the Renaissance festival community. That's what this Another Faire to Remember is ultimately about. It's about sharing new songs that are inspired by our love Ren Faires. This album is for Rennies. You will love the music. But it's not just about loving the music. It's about learning the songs and singing along. That's why many supporters of the Kickstarter will get a songbook to go with the album featuring lyrics and chords for all of the songs played on the CD. Speaking of CDs... [You have Cdeeeees] The goal of our Kickstarter is to raise funds to print physical copies of CDs and our Album Pins. Will you help in that endeavor? Make a pledge right now. Thank you for all your support!
An Episode with Ye Olde Charm! Here's what's to come in this episode: * In this episode, Matt and Angela dive into why Renaissance Faires feel innately autistic and explore how the art of LARPing offers a unique twist on masking—where choosing your own character and setting clear expectations can actually work for autistic folks.* Matt and Angela dive into how events like Ren Faires and concerts—though they might seem like sensory overload for autistic folks—can actually be a sensory delight, offering the freedom to "choose your own adventure" and control the level of sensory input.* Additionally, Renaissance Faires and historical reenactments tap into the concept of stimming by recreating the same rituals and experiences in a consistent, familiar way over and over again.* Our hosts explore why Renaissance Fests offer autistic folks a safe space to unmask, stim, embrace echolalia or non-speaking communication (whatever feels right!), set their own structure and rules, build careers around their special interests, and truly let their authentic selves shine.“If you are unhappy in your job and you have a special interest, I promise you there is some way to make that into a career. God knows what way, but there is a way.” - Angela“It's the difference between being in the shower and being hit by a water gun. Because the water gun might be even less water than you're getting in the shower, but you choose the time, you choose the place, you choose the intensity, you choose the temperature. ” - Matt“Before the word ‘autism' was ever uttered, you knew what kind of person would go out to the Gettysburg battlefield and dress up and have prop replicas and all these genuine replicas and have these, you know, historically accurate costumes they made themselves.” - AngelaDid you notice the connection between Renaissance Faires and the autistic experience? I feel like I don't say that enough. It's a blast to follow your musical world. Along the same lines, the Heroes CD is incredible. It's been getting regular play on the commute from work. Thank you for that too. I got a grin when you mentioned it on the podcast and said "you probably don't have this album." I follow your blog via RSS feed, as I have for years. Sometimes the old ways still work. Anyway, I just read the one about social media not sparking joy for you. *raises hand* Right there with you on that one. I hear more and more that employers won't hire someone without a social media presence. Does it truly matter? I've never thought so. Sounds like you're coming to the same conclusion after years of being in the trenches on that. Don't get me wrong, I appreciate the idea of immediacy, but everything seems to be immediate online. As they say, when everything is an emergency, nothing is an emergency. Unless you're one of these YouTube stars making bank on ad revenue for having millions of followers. Maybe then I'd get the need, but I don't follow any of those types. It's a weird balance. People tell me I'm old for not being on Facebook. Many in the younger generation don't bother with it either. Not sure where that leaves me. But I know what I like. I seek out podcasts and music. That's how I found you years ago. I've never had a reason to second guess. It takes all types in the world. It's like that in any business too. It just seems to me that musicians make music. As Spock told Kirk, it's your first, best destiny. Anything else is a waste of material. ;) I admire that you're willing to try new things, and I can't imagine how much of it comes down to marketing. In the end, you've built a solid product with a solid brand, and you continue to do so. It speaks for itself. I did have one old school idea... have you thought about broadcasting your podcast feed on XM radio? Or even on local FM bands (in conjunction with local Ren Faires and cons)? Then the radio stations feel the need to advertise for you. Radio is where music lives, right? You probably have considered it, but it never hurts to toss an idea out there. I've wondered why, as popular as Ren Faires are now, why there is no Ren Faire Radio. But then... this is what you do in podcast form, isn't it? Is radio not the great granddaddy of all social media? Orson Welles knew it. Freddie Mercury knew it. 80 years on, has it really changed so much? Apologies for rambling. In any case, this is a long-winded way of saying that this old school music fan appreciates you efforts. I have for years, and I will for years to come. I hope your move to Atlanta goes smoothly. I was telling my friend Heather the other day that I interviewed Jamie Denbo who created a show all about the Ren Faire. Her reaction, like mine, was...FINALLY! Why hasn't this subject been explored and put on display for all to see before? Denbo created "American Princess" which airs on Lifetime on June 2nd. I invited her to tell me about this show and how she became an actress, producer and top improviser. Denbo came to Hollywood in a unique way. She didn't train a traditional top acting school or have famous parents. She got a taste of theater and performing after a random audition for the Ren Faire. She says she was hooked on a life of immersing herself in other characters ever since. After a short stint at Disney World, she found her way to New York and trained under the original UCB founders - Amy Poehler, Matt Besser, Matt Walsh, and Ian Roberts. She found the experience of doing improv in New York strangely competitive at the time, unlike it is now. But she learned the UCB style and brought it to LA, launching the UCB Los Angeles theater and school. During that time she created her most well-known character, Beverly Ginsberg of "Ronna & Beverly" - a cult alt comedy act that was a live show, TV show and podcast (with guests like Jon Hamm, Connie Britton, Michael Strahan, Bob Odenkirk, Jack Black, Leslie Grossman, Paul Feig, Ben Platt, Will Arnett, Michael Bolton, etc.). She played Beverly for 12 years while also appearing in guest star roles on the biggest shows on TV. She has had recurring roles on “Orange is the New Black”, “The Good Place”, “F is for Family”, “Speechless”, “Curb Your Enthusiasm”. Despite all of her success, like many actors, she felt unfulfilled in some ways waiting for an audition to get a small part on a TV show. She says found joy and a sense of control in creating her own shows and projects. For many years she wanted to tell the stories of the colorful characters who live and breath the Ren Faire life and finally had the chance to do it. "American Princess" tells the story of an American socialite who joins a Renaissance Faire after her wedding goes awry, only to discover there’s a lot more to life than she once thought. When Amanda (Georgia Flood), an Upper East Side socialite, runs away from her own dream wedding, she realizes that the life she thought she wanted wasn’t actually right after all. After impulsively joining a Renaissance Faire, Amanda experiences an unexpected awakening that leads her to reevaluate everything she thought she knew about the pursuit of happiness. She quickly develops new friendships, rivalries and romances that, much to the confusion of her family, opens her eyes to new beginnings. Not only does "American Princess" have Denbo's sense of humor and great character development skills, but it's also being executive produced by Jenji Kohan ("OITNB", "Weeds") so it's comedy pedigree solid. Denbo is also a mom of 2 but to be honest, we didn't get to talk about motherhood much in this episode because we were diving in deep about the world of improv, Disney, Ren Faires and making television. Listen to this episode to hear the rest of Denbo's story and watch "American Princess" on Lifetime Sunday, June 2 at 10 pm ET/PT.

What do marketing managers, law professors, singer songwriters and podcast hosts have in common They could all use a good improv class. Dane Ciolino is a Tulane law professor and legal analyst who sends his trial advocacy classes to The Moth story telling event. Taylor Richardson is marketing manager and SEO guru at Turbo Squid. She also attends Renaissance Faires in 25 pounds of chain mail, and shoots a Mongolian horse bow Don t miss April s impressive research into all things archery . Taylor has participated in Hell Yes Fest, but don t call her a standup comic she will set you straight. Alex Mallet takes a break from his Frenchmen Street hustle to play a new original song, and promises a new album ... possibly named for his address. Andrew Duhon is back on the pod and borrows Alex s guitar to play one of his classics. It s a lingo filled Happy Hour you will never hear a more interesting convesation about archery and Ren Faires with guest host April Stolf See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Poets have existed for centuries. So who's to say there weren't a few among the pirates as well? There certainly are now. Steve Sanders aka Blackbead and his group Seadog Slam are taking pirate poetry to Pirate Fests, Ren Faires, and Steampunk Fests. This is one of those topics I never figured we'd be talking about on this show, but Steve does a great job explaining the magic of poetry. He takes us through his journey to becoming a pirate poet. And yep, he recites a really great one for us too. If you're not a poetry person, you may be tempted to skip this episode. But I think you'll really dig it if you give it a listen. For extended show notes and more pirate goodies, visit www.UnderTheCrossbones.com Dane Bennett ake Admiral Basi Drake is the lead singer for Pride of Bedlam, this year's International Pirate Awards winners for Favorite Band. In this great talk we dig into how Dane discovered Ren Faires and the pirate scene after his divorce (and eventually met his current wife), how POB designs their music to stand out in the pirate folk genre, playing a character on stage and dealing with regular folks on stage. Lots of good "inside the brain of performing artists" in this one. And Dane tells us why he thinks pirates have stuck around longer than other characters. Plus comedy from the Samantha Hale and a great song from Pride of Bedlam called "South Austrailia". Photo by GRHookPhoto.com As we prepare for our reunion show at Sherwood Forest Faire, wandering through the grounds, we record a podcast for the world to hear! And our theme is: What you can do with worn out Bards CDs? When they’ve been listened to far too often, rendering them useless for further musical perusal? Here are our suggestions… 10. Coaster! 9. Oriental Star – be a CD ninja! 8. Frisbee 7. Mirror 6. Christmas Ornaments 5. Reflect on the Virgin Song (?) 4. Confounding Jugglers at Ren Faires 3. Sundial (using a recorder!) 2. “Fun” things to do in your microwave (Disclaimer: Don’t try this at home. DANGER.) 1. Wall Art! What would YOU do with your worn out Bards CD? Yesterday’s show was great! The show went well, the crowd was fun, and we were good – we didn’t go over time! We went through a bunch of old favorites, and some others that we rarely play for some of our die hard fans. Most importantly, as we log off, in order to replace your beloved CDs, go to thebards.net to replenish and restock your shelves! And don’t forget to subscribe to Brobdingnagian Bards mailing list for the latest news!
Johnny and Alex sit down with cosplayer Loki Hates You for a very funny and enlightening hour. We chat in-depth about the ins and outs of cosplay culture, the torturous experiences that are Ren Faires, and some good Thrones book-to-show comparisons (everyone on the show should be uglier for accuracy's sake). Put this one in your ears. You won't be sorry. For the most up to date news and information regarding the podcast, like us on Facebook and follow us on Twitter!
