It's May 9, 2001, and the family of missing teenager, Natasha Ryan, are holding a memorial service in Bundaberg, Queensland. Today would have been her 17th birthday. Natasha, with dark brown hair, hazel eyes, and fair, freckled skin, had disappeared on August 31, 1998. She was 14 years old. For almost three years, there has been no trace of her. Her father, Robert Ryan, and mother, Jenny Ryan, have accepted that their daughter is dead. They may never find her remains. But at this memorial, they say their final goodbyes. Their pain is palpable to everyone around them. But - as they will later learn - Natasha Ryan is still alive. She's about 25 minutes away. And in a story unlike anything seen anywhere in the world, Natasha will appear at her own murder trial two years later. Her story is one Australia won't ever forget. Here at The Moon Under Water we are always on the chase. We're chasing that perfect pint, that pub in our dreams that only seems to exist in the further realm, that one extra drink that everyone knows they shouldn't have on a school night. And this week's guest is all too familiar with chases (but not so much chases focusing on pub desire), as it's Chaser Jenny Ryan. Though she Is probably most well known for her quizzing abilities The Vixen is also extremely well versed when it comes to pub knowledge. She loves a local, and if you saw her performances on The X Factor: Celebrity you'll know she loves a singalong too. Let's just hope Robin has set some sufficiently difficult questions in this week's pub quiz!Want to contact the Landlord? In these unprecedented times of the COVID-19 pandemic, many businesses have had to adapt to stay afloat, and The Blueroot Company is no different. Jenny shares the challenges she’s faced, how her company has been able to adapt to the new world of social distancing, and her Seven Steps of Sanity. Life as usual has changed for everyone during these crazy times. Jenny had to rethink the health and safety of her entire team and community, while still looking to provide some sense of normalcy in their services. She and Deanna discuss both the positives and negatives of The Blueroot Company being a young, small business and how this played a role in their reaction. Jenny shares how she realized her company was more than just a food program; it is a wellness program that benefits many in the community. In response to this, The Blueroot Company has started hosting a Sunday supper club. Jenny and Deanna discuss how the club works and the benefits of staying connected with your community in these times. To help herself find a routine, Jenny created her Seven Steps of Sanity. Made for 4 Extra. Amanda Litherland is joined by Deborah Frances-White to recommend Inside the Comedian with David Reed, and Fingers on Buzzers with Lucy Porter and Jenny Ryan.
Joining the Drunk Women this week is a woman who needs no introduction, but has many guises...to most, she's The Vixen, to some, she's The Bolton Brainiac, but to EVERYONE she's Jenny Ryan!Yes, The Chase's own quiz queen got into the swig of things and used her AMAZING (read: slightly frightening) knowledge of murder and body disposal to help the pissed-up detectives get to the bottom of a case which saw one poor lady lose her head back in 'olden times' AND has something to do with Britain's upper-most National Treasure. In between bottles of fizz, the blotto bobbies also grapple with a crime from Jenny's formative years and a listener's story which is a little close to home for our learned guest. You don't need to have a degree in sleuthing to guess if this episode was the first or second recording of the evening, but do pop your opinion into a review... In today’s episode, your hosts Lucy Porter and Jenny Ryan discuss what the difference is between a game show and a quiz show. What defines a quiz show? Could it be evening dress and pipe-smoking? Do cargo nets make it a game not a quiz? Join in the discussion on our Facebook page. For a blast of nostalgia, we are joined by Dermot Finch, who didn’t exactly make a great account of himself when he appeared on Blockbusters as a sixth former. Thankfully he not only has fond memories of Bob Holness but he’s even uploaded the show for your extreme viewing pleasure: https://vimeo.com/13579742Our second guest, giving us a glimpse behind the curtain of quiz show production, is Roger Tilling aka the Voice of University Challenge. Roger shares with us some behind-the-scenes tidbits and tells us about his biggest pronunciation challenges – all in those inimitable mellifluous tones. And Lucy and Jenny will start to work their way through the Quiz Syllabus, testing each other on those topics which, with a bit of attention, will make you a better quizzer. Every episode will feature mini-quizzes on two topics - listen out at the end of the show for next week’s subjects so you can get some revision in! This week, Lucy sets Jenny a champagne cork-popping pop quiz on Wine Bottle Sizes, and Jenny attempts to ease Lucy in with a warm-up set of questions on British Comedians.Thank you to our guests: Dermot Finch and Roger TillingGet in touch with us! Your hosts Lucy Porter and Jenny Ryan have a hot discussion topic this week: quiz show hosts. What makes a great quiz show host? Who are the best examples, and what makes them shine? Our guests are serial quiz show contestant James MacGregor, who joins us to talk about his team’s appearance on Eggheads, and James Harkin, star of the hit podcast No Such Thing As A Fish, senior QI Elf and all-round fact magnet. We press on with the Quiz Syllabus – Lucy has all the answers with her quiz on Heraldry, and Jenny sets some testing questions on UK Christmas Number Ones. Very festive!Thank you to our guests: James MacGregor of the Liverpool Quiz League and James Harkin of QI and No Such Thing As A FishGet in touch with us! The discussion topic for hosts Lucy Porter and Jenny Ryan this week is one most listeners are familiar with – the pub quiz! We discuss memories of pub quizzing, tactics for success (who knew Lucy was so competitive?) and start a search for the best pub quizzes around. Got a recommendation for a great pub quiz? Get in touch on Twitter or Facebook.Guest-wise, we are joined by Britain’s Brightest Dad aka Brendan Curtis – victor of the 2018 series of Britain’s Brightest Family – who chats with us about being catapulted into the air on TV while answering questions. We are also delighted to be joined by the series producer of the toughest quiz show on telly Jenny Hawker to talk all things Only Connect (and Haribo.)No let-up in the quest to become better quizzers, as the Quiz Syllabus takes us through Nautical Terms and US State Capitals. Fingers on Buzzers is brought to you by comedian and keen amateur quizzer Lucy Porter, alongside The Chase's very own Jenny Ryan. Whether you’re a Pointless armchair aficionado, nostalgic for the days of Going for Gold, or a bona fide Mastermind, this is the podcast for you. Jenny and Lucy speak to a host of people who work behind the scenes of our favourite TV quiz shows, including James Harkin (QI), Roger Tilling (the ‘Voice’ of University Challenge) and Jenny Hawker (Only Connect); plus we hear from epic winners and losers of quiz shows past and present, from Bullseye and Blockbusters to Britain's Brightest Family and everything in between. Lucy and Jenny will also discuss the BIG issues including the etiquette of pub quizzing, new quizzing technology and how questions have changed with the times. All the BIG questions will be asked (and answered.) What IS the difference between quiz shows and game shows? With the help of experts and enthusiasts alike, Jenny and Lucy get to the bottom of that and much, much more besides. There's also plenty of opportunities to play-along, as week-by-week Jenny coaches plucky layperson Lucy on the ‘quiz syllabus’, and in-turn Lucy tests the mettle of general knowledge guru Jenny with a weekly pop-quiz. Whether you're an Only Connect know-it-all, still dine-out on your Fifteen To One appearance from 1993, or only indulge in Trivial Pursuits on December 25th, this podcast is for you. On the road to Burning Man in a Toyota Prius with Rak Razam and radical cyber anthropologist Jenny Ryan (aka Tuna Bananas), research assistant to media pundit Howard Rhinegold (The Virtual Community and Smart Mobs). Jenny discusses cyber literacy, smart mobs and virtual communities with experiential journalist Rak Razam... How do we use technology to form communities and conduct virtual everyday social interactions? Does social networking keep the drones sedate and make us good workers? Or does Super-poking and quiz sharing provide a social glue for online communities? Where does the drift towards hive mind collectivism in the human matrix being able to laterally recognize itself – an ambient awareness – lead us? What role does the ego play in blogging and lifestreaming? And as social tribes grow, does it increase our pool of knowledge and ability to draw upon the wisdom of the collective? Or is it all an Orwellian marketing wet dream? The intent behind technology makes all the difference... *warning* some scratchy wind muffles about 20 minutes in... the perils of experiential podcasting...
