The 2nd week of project 32, and London's 2nd most populous borough. This week we are stumbling around in the fog of the Battle of Barnet. Who is fighting who? who trusts who? We're in the midst of the Wars of the Roses, and the kingdom is at stake. The biggest failure of the battle - it's Heraldry itself. Hang your head in shame heraldry, you cost lives that day. Plus the tale of Dirty Gertie's arrival from France, and the gift that Barnet keeps on giving to the rest of London. Ooh, a lovely Barnet fair, hexcellent. A little bit late this week - sorry gang. Fiona's internet died at the critical moment. She could have taken her laptop to a cafe to work, like a proper modern person, if she had a working laptop. There's nothing like losing the ability to do something, to realise how much we take it for granted when it works. Modern technology is a marvel. When it works. Learn more about your ad choices. From podium plaques and flags to the doors of the presidential limo and Air Force One, it is always present: fifty stars encircling an eagle whose talons hold bundles of olive branches and arrows, and around that circle of stars, a band with the words “Seal of the President of the United States.” If you've ever wondered where that design came from and how those symbols are made, join Stewart McLaurin, President of the White House Historical Association, on a special tour of The Institute of Heraldry at Fort Belvoir, a U.S. Army installation in Northern Virginia. The art of heraldry goes back centuries and is usually associated with military groups and nobility. Colors and symbols created a design used as a form of identification. America's Founding Fathers were very cautious about adopting anything closely related to monarchy and the nobility, so there was no standard design based on traditional heraldry representing the Office of the President until the 1940s. Near the end of World War II, President Franklin Roosevelt asked heraldry experts and military personnel to create an official design for the presidential flag, seal, and coat of arms. Unfortunately, President Roosevelt died before the project was completed. Still, President Harry Truman saw it through and, in October 1945, signed an executive order establishing for the very first time a legal definition of the president's coat of arms and seal as used by the president. In 1948, President Truman did the same with designs for the Office of the Vice President. Those designs, as well as the Presidential Medal of Freedom, decorations, badges, flags, and other insignia for the U.S. military services and departments throughout the federal government, are created with the assistance of The Institute of Heraldry. And those plaques you see affixed to the podiums behind which the president and vice president speak? Unbelievably, all of those are crafted and painted by hand at the Institute and nowhere else.  In this episode you will hear from Charles Mugno, Director of The Institute of Heraldry; Thomas Casciaro, Chief of the Technical and Production Division at The Institute of Heraldry; as well as Michael Craghead, Exhibit Specialist at The Institute of Heraldry, who has been painting plaques for the president and vice president for over twenty years. We hope you enjoy this special look behind the scenes of the making of the presidential seal.  Find all our podcasts at: https://www.whitehousehistory.org/the-white-house-1600-sessions

The Book Leads – Episode 62 – Atlas Aultman & his book, Rule of 3: How Elite Leaders Win Joshua “Atlas” Aultman has had a career steeped in leadership lessons. Coming from a family lineage that's traversed both law enforcement and the military, the family code is one of serving others. From those family lessons to his 27 years of military experience (in over 30 countries) in the most elite teams -- from communities such as Special Operations, conflict zones, and the Obama White House -- through his speaking, writing, and coaching, we get to learn from Atlas's takeaways. Rule of 3 is a book Atlas began years ago, with its lessons seeding the children's books he's written since then, for which his son served as illustrator. Any time a guest can simplify the lessons of leadership to expose our youth to those virtues and prepare them with tools to live and serve with their best life, I'm all for it! Any time we can learn the lessons of leadership streamlined to the most elite foundation, I'm here for that as well! What I took away from this conversation is the urgency that exists in leadership. Most leadership positions will not carry the same life-or-death consequences as leadership positions in the military, but each will carry deep importance and significance in the life of the leader and those in their charge. We often think of the military as being all business, stoic, hard-charging, and ready for action. But Atlas's work serves through compassion, service, and honesty to impact everyone – even if they're not the right person for the job. Episode Highlights What to learn from the biggest corporation in the world, the United States military How leadership is a voice. If you can tell a story to a child, that's what everyone's going to listen to. The power and respect in honest candor with others regarding their performance “The world is a stage, and your kids are watching you as the main character. So, if you spend time with them and take them to your stage and provide them the lessons you're learning, that's better than anything you can do.” The MAIN QUESTION that underlies my conversation with Atlas is, How much do you understand (and provide to) the role of each person in the mission of your work? Mentioned Or Applicable Books Games People Play: The Psychology of Human Relationships by Eric Berne Oh, The Places You'll Go by Dr. Seuss The World Encyclopedia of Flags and Heraldry by Alfred Znamierowski About Atlas Atlas is a 4X bestselling author, former United States Air Force senior officer with experiences in communities like the White House, Conflict zones, and Special Operations. Atlas was recently voted as one of the nation's top 150 unknown speakers. He is currently the CEO of Leaders-KIT, an organization that helps proven leaders. The week leading up to the closure saw a lot of guests getting in their last visit before it turns into something quite new and refreshed. This is the first time that we are aware of that an entire land has been closed for a remodel as extensive as this since the New Fantasyland in the early 80's. – https://www.micechat.com/316816-disneyland-update-bibbidi-bobbidi-kaboom/ Encanto fans can now meet Mirabel in a new location at the resort. Mirabel's meet and greet has moved from the Paradise Garden area of Disney California Adventure, where she was located during the Festival of the Holidays, to Zocalo Park in Frontierland. The lines to meet her have been long, so be prepared to wait a bit if you want to get a picture with her. – https://www.micechat.com/316816-disneyland-update-bibbidi-bobbidi-kaboom/ One of our Weeklyteers will be very excited at this next piece of news! Tinker Bell has returned to Pixie Hollow, the area between Buzz Lightyear Astro Blasters and the hub. Tinker Bell has not been in her hollow since sometime in 2020 before the closure of the parks. This is a welcome addition to the meet and greet lineup and is sure to be popular. – https://www.micechat.com/316816-disneyland-update-bibbidi-bobbidi-kaboom/ Captain Marvel must be on a mission elsewhere as the jet for her meet and greet has been removed from the Hollywood Pictures Backlot. The area is now behind constructions walls. Who knows what this location will become in the future. – https://www.micechat.com/316816-disneyland-update-bibbidi-bobbidi-kaboom/ The new shop in Fantasyland that took over the old Heraldry shop has opened. Merlin's Marvelous Miscellany opened this past week. Most of the merchandise in this location is available elsewhere around the resort, except that some Peter Pan items that are usually just sold in the UK pavilion in Epcot. The details around this cozy shop are the real star here and are a must stop for any Sword in the Stone fans! – https://www.micechat.com/316633-abracadabra-merlins-marvelous-miscellany-opens-at-disneyland/ Disneyland continues to work on infrastructure for the nighttime entertainment in both parks. This week, a new canopy was installed over the top of the pits to the Fantasmic! fountains. What could this mean? MiceChat suggests that it could be new show elements being worked on or installed that will be part of the returning show. – https://www.micechat.com/316816-disneyland-update-bibbidi-bobbidi-kaboom/ With the changes coming to New Orleans Square soon, some other things are also disappearing. The two Ficus trees in the courtyard of Pirates of the Caribbean are being taken out due to disease. Hopefully new trees and their much needed shade are put back in some capacity for the queue. – https://www.micechat.com/316816-disneyland-update-bibbidi-bobbidi-kaboom/ We are already half way through March, which means that St. Patrick's Day is almost here! Mermaids: Imprinted in Human Psyche, But Evolutionarily Impossible

Better Than Human

Play Episode Play 60 sec Highlight Listen Later Oct 20, 2021 59:24

A Mermaid is a mythical aquatic creature with the upper body of a female human and the tail of a fish.  Legends of these creatures have been reported since the beginning of humanity. There is no evidence that mermaids live anywhere on earth. However, there are a lot of scientific reasons why they physically cannot exist. Seriously, fish and human's last common ancestor was over 170 million years ago. If you're going to say mermaids are mammals, they'd have to breathe air, which means going to the surface often. (So lots of chances for humans to spot them).  AND even then, a human/water mammal would not have had time to evolve. Whales returned to the ocean 50 million years ago, and humans evolved 300,000 years ago…. So there is just not enough time for evolution to take place. But, there is a lot of interesting folklore surrounding these creatures. (A lot more interesting than the bigfoot ‘folklore') Tails of merfolks go back to ancient times: from the 2500BC Mesopotamia to the first know tale of an Assyrian queen who turned into a mermaid in 1000BC to current culture.  So, to say mermaids have been in the human psyche forever, would not be in error. Listen now to learn why mermaids cannot happen in real life, but are interesting anyways. For more information on us, visit our website at betterthanhumanpodcast.comFollow us on Twitter @betterthanhuma1on Facebook @betterthanhumanpodcaston Instagram @betterthanhumanpodcasthttps://www.tiktok.com/@betterthanhumanpodcastor Email us at betterthanhumanpodcast@gmail.comWe look forward to hearing from you, and we look forward to you joining our cult of weirdness!#betterthanhuman #cultofweirdnes

In the seventh and final episode of this series (sorry folks!), host Andrew Martin meets Pam Smith, a family historian who went from hobbyist, to professional genealogist, and then to local historian. We'll find out how she made those moves, how she ended up co-founding the research site NameAndPlace.com, and her dual loves of North Yorkshire and heraldry.Relatively Speaking: Pam's choice of life story is that of her Great Great Uncle, Albert 'Ginger' Goodwin. Ginger left the collieries of Yorkshire behind and headed to Canada where he advanced his political activism until he met an untimely death. Pam will tell his incredible story, and his legacy that is still very much felt in the communities he stood up for even now, more than 100 years after his death. The Brick Wall: The hunt is on for Sir Richard Etherington of Rillington, North Yorkshire, England, as Pam explains her current Brick Wall. Aside from owning land and collecting his knighthood in 1603, it's his connection to other Etheringtons in the area that is baffling Pam. Do you have a connection to a Knight? Does he connect to the others? What are his origins?Pam agrees to Andrew's offer of help, but something is about to go very wrong indeed...Credits: Series 1, Episode 7. However, it is clear that MyHeritage intends to be a contender, and they are quickly ramping up their efforts to gain market share–and your confidence. MyHeritage began 2018 by making a much needed change to their DNA matching algorithm, which had some errors in it. They were able to adjust it, and now it is humming right along, telling our second cousins from our fourth. Another development, launched in February, is the addition of a Chromosome Browser. THE NEW MYHERITAGE DNA CHROMSOME BROWSER  Much like you would browse the library shelves for the perfect book, or browse through the sale rack for a great bargain, you can use a Chromosome Browser to look through your chromosomes for the pieces of DNA you share with your genetic cousins. Chromosome Browsers can be everything from a fun way to review your genetic genealogy results, to a tool to assist in determining how you are related to someone else. Let's go over three tips to help you make use of this new tool. NAVIGATING TO THE CHROMOSOME BROWSER There are actually two different kinds of Chromosome Browsers in MyHeritage: one to view only the segments you share with one match (the One-to-One Browser), and a browser where you can see the segments shared with multiple matches (the One-to-Many Browser). To get to the One-to-One Browser, head over to your match page and find a cousin for whom you would like to see your shared DNA segments. Click on Review DNA Match, then scroll down past all the individual match information, past the Shared Matches and Shared Ethnicities until you see the Chromosome Browser. USING THE ONE-TO-MANY CHROMOSOME BROWSER To find the One-to-Many Chromosome Browser, you can use the main DNA navigation menu at the top of the MyHeritage homepage. Click on DNA, then on Chromosome Browser, as shown below. In the One-to-Many Chromosome Browser you can compare yourself, or any account you manage, to anyone else in your match page. To choose a match to evaluate, just click on their name and they will be added to the queue at the top, as shown here. Clicking on Compare will then allow you to see the actual segments you share with each person: In this One-To-Many view, each individual match gets their own line for each chromosome. Since we have added 7 people to the Chromosome Browser, there are seven lines next to each chromosome number. Each match not only gets their own line, but also their own color. So you can easily match up the lines on the chromosome to the match that shares that piece of DNA with you. For the majority of people the majority of the time, these Chromosome Browsers are just another fun way to visualize the connection you have with your DNA match. In the end, it doesn't matter where you are sharing on the chromosome, just how much DNA you are sharing. You can obtain that information from your main match page and never look at this Chromosome Browser image, and still make fantastic genetic genealogy discoveries. THE TRIANGULATION TOOL Another feature of the Chromosome Browser on MyHeritage is the Triangulation tool. To understand how this works, you first need to understand that you actually have two copies of each chromosome. Two copies of chromosome 1, two copies of chromosome 2, etc. One copy is from mom, and the other from dad. However, in the Chromosome Browser image, you see only one line for yourself (in grey). Therefore, when you see someone matching you on chromosome 14, for example, you don't know if that person is matching you on the chromosome 14 you got from your mom, or the chromosome 14 you got from your dad. Likewise, if you see two people whose shared piece with you looks to be in the same location on the same chromosome, you can't tell if they are both sharing on the same copy of that chromosome, or if one match is related to your dad's family, and the other match is related to your mom's family. However, this is what the Triangulation tool does for us. It tells us if two (or three or four, etc.) matches are sharing on the same copy of the same chromosome. Be careful when you use this tool, though. Many erroneously assume that when they see a segment shared between multiple people, that indicates the presence of a recent common ancestor for all of those people. However, that is not always the case.  is the place to make connections with relatives overseas, particularly with those who may still live in your ancestral homeland. : it's free to get started. Ready to start exploring what the MyHeritage DNA chromosome browser may tell you about your family history? You have two options.  to upload your autosomal DNA test results from another company to MyHeritage for FREE. Or  to order a MyHeritage DNA test kit. Either way, you can start using all the great tools at MyHeritage DNA! Trump, Inc.
Trump Org Ordered Golf Markers With the Presidential Seal. That May Be Illegal.

Trump, Inc.

Donald Trump loves putting his name on everything from ties to steaks to water — and, of course, his buildings. But now the Trump Organization appears to be borrowing a brand even more powerful than the gilded Trump moniker: the presidential seal. In recent weeks, the Trump Organization has ordered the manufacture of new tee markers for golf courses that are emblazoned with the seal of the President of the United States. Under federal law, the seal’s use is permitted only for official government business. Misuse can be a crime. Past administrations have policed usage vigilantly. In 2005 the Bush administration ordered the satirical news website The Onion to remove a replica of the seal. Grant M. Dixton, associate White House council, wrote in a letter to The Onion that the seal "is not to be used in connection with commercial ventures or products in any way that suggests presidential support or endorsement.” After listening to the new ProPublica/WNYC podcast Trump, Inc., a listener brought the signs to our attention. Eagle Sign and Design, a metalworking and sign company with offices in New Albany, Indiana, and Louisville, Kentucky, said it had received an order to manufacture dozens of round, 12-inch replicas of the Presidential Seal to be placed next to the tee boxes at Trump golf course holes. Two tee markers are placed on the ground at the start of a hole on golf courses to indicate where golfers should stand to take their first swing. “We made the design, and the client confirmed the design,” said Joseph E. Bates, who owns Eagle Sign, declining to say who the client was. An order form for the tee markers reviewed by ProPublica and WNYC says the customer was “Trump International.” The Facebook page for Eagle Sign and Design shows a photo of the markers in an album with the caption “Trump International Golf Course.” It is unclear how many Trump International golf courses could feature the markers. The Trump Organization owns four courses with the “International” name in the U.S. and abroad, with a fifth course in Bali, Indonesia, in the works. Eagle Sign makes a wide array of tee markers out of bronze and aluminum, and has made other signs for Trump’s courses, according to its website. At some of Trump’s golf courses, tee markers have sported the Trump family crest, which he took from the family that originally owned Mar-a-Lago without permission and then altered by adding his own name. Ethics experts have long been on the lookout for signs that the Trump Organization would exploit the office of the presidency for commercial gain. Several said that using the Presidential Seal on the company’s golf courses would fall into this category. A law governs the manufacture or use of the seal, its likeness, “or any facsimile thereof” for anything other than official U.S. government business. It can be a criminal offense punishable by up to six months in prison. The “law is an expression of the idea that the government and government authority should not be used for private purpose,” said Kathleen Clark, a law professor at Washington University specializing in government and legal ethics said. “It would be a misuse of government authority.” The Department of Justice declined to comment on whether it was aware the seal had been used by entities outside the government. The White House and the Trump Organization did not respond to request for comment. The presidential seal was first sketched out by President Millard Fillmore in 1850 and the current design — which shows a bald eagle with an olive branch in its right talon, a bundle of 13 arrows in the left, and a scroll bearing the words “E pluribus unum” in its beak — was chosen by President Truman and made official in a 1945 executive order.  The seal that adorns the president’s speaking lecterns is hand-made by the Institute of Heraldry, a department of the Army located at Fort Belvoir in Virginia that designs and provides guidance related to military and governmental symbols. Versions of the seal have occasionally been put to personal use by past presidents. George W. Bush and Barack Obama had custom sets of golf balls made with the seal. Ronald and Nancy Reagan had a set of presidential china bearing the seal, and there have even been M&M’s and jelly-beans that featured the seal. In this case, the difference is that a private company is using the seal, said Richard Painter, vice chairman of Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington, a government accountability group. Painter also served as an associate White House counsel during the George W. Bush administration. “If we had heard of a private company using it for commercial purposes, we would have sent them a nasty letter,” he said. Update: After this story was published, the Facebook page with the image of the Presidential Seal golf tee marker was removed. Screen shot of Facebook page of Eagle Sign & Design. Motorcycles & misinformation.. yep, this is Creative Riding. Welcome to episode 91. Chris has the week off. He's enjoying the luxurious palm-strewn beaches of the Cuba, puffing on an OG Cubano Cigar and watching the sea breeze gently blow boats and houses down the flooded streets. Actually, I have no clue where he is, so sit back and enjoy so quiet time with yours truly... ;) In the first segment I talk about Top Tier Bikes... Why you need them, why we need them, why I need you, and you need me. I actually only talk about the first two parts. High-dollar merchandise off-sets the cost of lower value, break-even products no matter what industry you're in. Size doesn't necessarily matter, but someone has to pay for all the R&D, and in motorcycling's case, assembly, marketing, shipping, et cetera. Thank god for all of you old, retired or young, wealthy people. Without you being able to afford the Gold Wings, K1600GTs and CVO Road Glides the rest of us wouldn't be able to buy CBR650s, G310Rs and XL883s! The second main topic of the show is Emblems: What do they mean, and how do they get their start? Some companies have emblems with true iconography that would require a certificate in Heraldry to discern, while others simply have a cheap font and a wacky back-story. I chose 10 manufacturers at random and dug up the dirt on their brand icon. Finally we'll talk about American Flat Track. There are 2 rounds remaining, and the Twins already know their champion while the Singles are having last minute struggles at the top of the list! The Genealogy Professional podcast with Host Marian Pierre-Louis – Interviews with Experienced Genealogists

Featured Guest Judy Webster Judy Webster has been researching her family history since the 1970s. In 1986, at which time she was working as a medical scientist, she began her own part-time business as a professional genealogist. After being accredited by the Australasian Association of Genealogists and Record Agents, Judy did four years of study to obtain a Graduate Diploma in Local and Applied History (University of New England, Armidale NSW). In 2001 she received the Queensland Family History Society's Award for Services to Family History. Judy's speciality is research in original records at Queensland State Archives, with emphasis on unusual sources that are superb for overcoming 'brick walls'. Her clients include family historians, academic historians, and law firms trying to trace beneficiaries of deceased estates. Judy's large Web site has advice on sources and strategies for family history research, and more than 53,000 names of local, interstate and overseas folk mentioned in Archives records. She has published various genealogy guides and indexes, and has given more than one hundred presentations at family history events in Australia and New Zealand, including the Australasian Congress on Genealogy and Heraldry. Judy is also the founder and coordinator of the 'Genealogists for Families' project, which encourages family historians worldwide to help less fortunate families by making micro-loans through Kiva (a non-profit organisation). Really, really get to know it well.” Recommended Book Weevils in the Flour by Wendy Lowenstein Advice "Always research the relatives." Action Item Judy mentioned she was concerned that people don't realize how much information is available in archives that isn't online. She is absolutely right.  If we all do this action we can start to make a dent in the misperception that all research can be done online. ACTION: 1) Aanalyze your local archive and discover which materials they have that are not online. 2) Make a list on a page of your website or blog listing all the resources from that archive that are not available online so that the public can have access to it. Of course, you don't have to list everything in your local archive that isn't online! You might just provide broad categories. If you're at a loss as to where to start, have a chat with the folks at your local archive and ask them! Tell them that you want to write about what they have that is not online. I'm sure they would be happy to point you to those collections. Not only will you be helping the general public learn more about the resources of the archive but even better, you'll be on your way to developing a working relationship with the staff. Arthurian Special - The Ladies of the Grail This is the Autumn Equinox Holiday Special, and we're also bringing you (in association with Druidcast and Damh the Bard), a special Lecture by Prof. Dr. Roland Rotherham on "The Ladies of the Grail". Dr Rotherham is an acknowledged expert and scholar in the legends of King Arthur and the Holy Grail. In this wonderful talk he revels how the ladies of the Grail have considerably more importance in the legends than the Knights themselves! Not a talk to be missed! In typical Celtic fashion, he explains how the Grail is one of *three* items of great importance and reveals that the origins of the Grail Legends may be a lot older than previously thought. Not only is he extremely knowledgeable but also an extremely entertaining lecturer. We round off the show with three pieces of Arthurian music and gratefully pass our thanks on to Damh and Dr. Rotherham for their respective permissions to use this material. We hope you enjoy this treat as much as we did. Her CD's, Lady Moon and I Walk with the Goddess are being recognized around the globe as a must have for any lover of Goddess inspired folk music. Her live shows are a combination of acoustic guitar songs and chants to the God and Goddess. "Morgana was created after I read Marion Zimmer Bradley's "The Mists of Avalon" for the third time. The lyrics were completed upon my return from the Ancient Isle of Avalon in Glastonbury, England. Being in Avalon and on the Tor, I could easily imagine Morgan losing her way in the mists and traveling to the Fairy World. She was strong and always emerged from the magical realm to her beloved Avalon." You can find out more about Kellianna on her website or on her Contributor Page.   Many A Knight by Kim Thomsett Urban Dryad Kim Thompsett is a musician and songwriter living and working in the South East of England. She plays guitar, flute, native American flute and zither. Her songs have an escapist quality which evokes the England of old with hints of Celtic, medieval and the classic folk artists of the ‘60’s and 70’s. This song, Many a Knight, is from her debut album, Urban Dryad which can be heard on last.fm. Her latest superb album is Songs from the Uglee Meadow. The album title is inspired by a serene and beautiful place in East Sussex called the Uglee Meadow. The album features musicians such as Will Summers from Circulus on recorders, flutes and crumhorn and Philip Martin (alias Drohne) on hurdy gurdy. You can find out all about Kim on her website or her Contributor Page on our site.   The Ladies of the Grail by Prof. Dr. Roland Rotherham Dr Roland Rotherham B.A.hons, M.A, Ph.D., Ed.D, M.I.H.G.S. holds degrees in Ancient and Medieval studies, Anglo-Saxon Culture, Heraldry, Anglo-Norman Culture, Ancient and Medieval Cultural Studies, and Education. He is a member of the Institute of Heraldic and Genealogical Studies, and The Fellowship Of The Knights Of The Round Table Of King Arthur.   He says: Many people are aware of the legends relating to this relic and its importance in the "Quest" but the actual story regarding the possible origin of The Grail is as complex as the legends that surround it. Firstly we can look at the Celtic Grail with its dark mysticism and the stories of the cauldron of Annwn, a magical vessel that belonged to the mythical Giant/King Bran The Blessed, this was one of the earliest legends and tells us of a great cauldron that, if a dead warrior was placed into it at the end of a day he would rise again in the morning live and well but without the power of speech. There also exists a tale of the Celtic Cauldron of Knowledge, one taste from this vessel and all wisdom past, present, and future is the gift of the tasters, this also links with the tale of Taliesin. You can find out more about the Professor on his Contributor Page.   The Winter King by Damh the Bard Damh is a musical storyteller who works within the world of myth that cannot be proved; where the Faerie really do dance on Midsummer's Eve, where the trees talk, and the Hollow Hills take you into the realms of Annwn. Where the Goddess rides her horse, guiding you to magic, and the Horned God of old calls us from the shadows of the Greenwood. You can find Damh's music on iTunes, or from his website, Pagan Music. He is also the voice behind Druidcast, the official podcast of the Order of Bards, Ovates and Druids (OBOD, for short) - modern day Druids.
