It had so much helpful information she can share with her patients that don't receive care at a major hospital.   [3:14] Ryan talks about an exhibit they couldn't show virtually: a hands on transnasal endoscopy exhibit. People got to play with the controller and practice what it is like for a doctor to do a transnasal endoscopy on a model of the nasal cavity, esophagus, and stomach. Attendees of all ages were invited to try it.   [3:38] Ryan found that he wasn't very good at it. It takes practice! He recalls previous podcast episodes where this technology was discussed.   [4:04] Holly received lots of text messages about feeding therapy strategies and transnasal endoscopy. She received at least 13 photos from people who tried the transnasal endoscope with their children. She was jealous not to have been at the conference. Families also reached out to Holly about the string test study.   [4:58] Jane Robinson, PhD, presented ways patients can cope with and overcome some of the fears surrounding these new diagnostic methods and treatment options. A lot of kids are scared of getting shots to receive biologic treatments. She also met with an on-site teen group. Ryan loved going to APFED conferences as a teen.   [5:49] Dan Atkins, MD also did a Q&A session with the teens. Holly missed being there in person to connect with other EoE patients. The teen group at the conferences were helpful when she was growing up. The teen pictures Holly received were a riot. It looked like a good time.   [6:31] The main conference sessions were recorded and will be available on demand to view and engage with through the end of the year.   [7:11] Oral Immunotherapy (OIT) was a hot topic in the Q&As, including who could qualify for it. Ryan is excited about biologics as an option for the treatment of EoE and eosinophilic diseases. Ryan was glad the CEGIR scholars were able to present virtually at the conference.   [8:12] In 2024, APFED will host the EOS Connection conference in the Washington, DC. area. Ryan hopes to see everyone there in person or virtually.   [8:29] Throughout the year, APFED also hosts a  webinar series. Known for her creativity and multi-faceted approach to environmental education and outreach, she used her platform as Miss Alameda, a crown she held from 2010-2011, to showcase sustainability and climate issues by creating a character she played called “Recycle Woman” complete with costume and superhero cape. The character evolved into an imaginative story and was renamed “Resilience”, and a graphic novel series called “Resilience Birthright” was launched in 2018. In her hometown of Alameda, she used the Miss Alameda platform launch a grassroots program she called “Miss Alameda Says Compost!”, which helped the city address the Climate Protection Plan it adopted in 2008. Her efforts were also crucial in helping Alameda work toward reaching it diversion goals by 2020.

The First World War saw unprecedented numbers of women enter the workplace and help pave the way for women to be given greater rights and responsibilities in their careers, or did it? The Sex Disqualification (Removal) Act of 1919 was, on paper, a social revolution opening the doors to professions that previously women had been barred by law from entering. The reality was very different though and instead of being treated as equals they continued to experience discrimination and barriers to pursuing the careers they wanted and were qualified for. Today, Belinda talks more in more depth about each jewel featured in her book The Seven Jewels of Life: what they represent in our life, from the color, country, food, emotions, and how practically these jewels will take you on a journey of self-discovery towards inner confidence and empowerment, in order to reach your unique destiny. Belinda discusses the seven steps of understanding behind the Seven Jewels of Life. She walks you through each jewel and shows how they work and how they can be used in your life. Step one is determining what the seven jewels represent for you. Each of the seven jewels represents seven primary areas of our life. The idea behind the Seven Jewels of Life is that we should polish each of these seven jewels in order to light up our diamond within. Additionally, for every jewel, there's a day of the week, a color, and a continent celebrated (2:38). Step two is all about letting the jewels help you get clarity and direction in your life (4:33). To help bring clarity and direction, Belinda talks how making dream sheets for each jewel helped her get visual clarity for each jewel. Step three is to become aware of your thinking and recognizing your thoughts are like magnets. What you're thinking and fearing, you'll tend to bring in more in of that they of stuff. To overcome this, one must understand that you not what is in your thoughts, and start to generate thoughts about what you do want to think about (14:15). Step four is about understanding the gap between what you want and your lived experience. Here is where you examine what is happing when your thoughts don't match your dream (21:23). Step five is what to do when negative thoughts stop your thoughts from matching your dream. The answer is to write. Belinda created a formula for this step called SBS, which stands for stop the thoughts, breathe to claim yourself and step into your own diamond field. (23:48) Step six is all about choice. This step is where everyone can decide for themselves whether to stay out in the storm a bit longer or go inside to your diamond field. Step six is knowing we all have the ability to change perspective. (31:50) Step seven is where Belinda created Diamond Day. George Robinson owned his own Auto Body Shop and had his own reggae band George and the Wonders. Pamela helped promote reggae music in the late 70’s and was a huge part of the movement that brought reggae to the United States. The reggae music industry is how Jessica’s parents met. In August 1994, her life changed dramatically! Jessica’s mother passed away and her father had to raise her on his own. Losing her mother greatly impacted her life‐ Jessica went from an out‐ going, happy, free spirited ten years old, to a confused, lonely child. She lost the aspiration to communicate with her peers. She felt they did not understand her life. She felt like an outsider. Her father was a strict parent and lacked the experience to raise a young girl entering her teens. A breach developed between them. George and Jessica could not easily get along trying to balance a teenager’s social priorities and the core curriculum of her school. By the time she was sixteen, and in high school, her father granted her to get legal emancipation and allowed her to live with Juanita Blair (whom she knows as a grandmother.) Jane was born in Edinburgh and brought up in North Yorkshire. After reading English at Somerville College, Oxford, she became an antiquarian book dealer, and later a writer. She writes full time, apart from when she's happily travelling to give talks or broadcasts about her books, or working one day a week at Somerville College as an assistant archivist. Illegitimacy once meant you were a 'bastard'. The MP Caroline Flint wants to know what the word 'illegitimate' means now. Caroline has always been open about her unmarried Mum having her when she was 17 years old and that she had her first son before she got married. Caroline describes her own family's story as a Catherine Cookson novel. There are suspicions that her widowed great-grandmother had an illegitimate child. Her grandmother's older sister had an illegitimate child during WW1 with an American soldier who was brought up as though his mother was his sister. She explores the archives to find out if the stigma has died out with social historian Jane Robinson and discusses the issue with best-selling crime author Martina Cole and fellow MP Jess Phillips. Martina, who is also an ambassador for the single parent families' charity Gingerbread, became a single parent by choice when she was 18 and then again 20 years later. Jess conceived her son when she was 22 and had been with her boyfriend for barely a month. Is the biggest deal today not whether a child is illegitimate but whether she bears her father's surname?
