I'm third-generation in the shoe business. My (maternal) grandfather owned a shoe store in East St. Louis in the 1930s and worked the rest of his career at Brown Shoe Co. in St. Louis in import/export. My father was a traveling shoe salesman for Brown. In 1976, when I was 15, he left Brown to move to Eugene to help start Osaga Shoe Co. as its vice president of apparel. I graduated from South Eugene High School in 1979, and began my first “tour of duty” with the University of Oregon that fall. I was pursuing a degree in mathematics but finding it to be not the career I wanted so I took off a year, which turned into six. During that time I worked for the Eugene Family YMCA and ultimately became its public relations director. I also got married and we decided it was time for me to return to the UO to earn a bachelor's degree in journalism, which I did in 1989. My first job out of college was, ironically, back in St. Louis at public relations agency Fleishman-Hillard, where I was assigned to the Valvoline account. This entailed, among other responsibilities, handling the communications for Joe Amato, a top-fuel drag racer. Joe was really nice, and he actually won the NHRA Top Fuel title in 1990, but doing PR for motorsports didn't exactly thrill me. But my event experience, combined with my communications skills honed at the YMCA and Fleishman-Hillard, made me uniquely qualified for a newly created position within Nike. The first Niketown had opened in Portland in 1990 and a second Niketown in Chicago followed in July 1992. During the next two years, I managed dozens of events in both the Portland and Chicago stores, then added in the grand openings and events at Niketowns Orange County and Atlanta. Working so closely with athletes and Nike Sports Marketing, I realized that Nike needed a sports information department to handle the athletes, their bios and their appearances on behalf of Nike, so I pitched the idea to my boss and was told “go do it.” I put together a proposal to create the Department of Nike Archives, which I dubbed “DNA.” It would feature an historian role to complement what the existing archives department was doing. In other words, we had people capturing the footwear and apparel, but we needed someone to collect the stories behind them. And to take things a step further, to gather proactively the memories and insights of current and former employees and athletes so they'd be preserved and retold to future generations. I was able to get the proposal in front of Phil Knight, who supported it, and in 2005 I became Nike's first corporate historian. I began combing through the existing timelines, annual reports, catalogs, internal newsletters and media clippings to lay out a framework for telling a complete story of Nike. Then I reached out to dozens, and ultimately hundreds, of long-term current and former employees to interview them about their Nike career highlights (and lowlights). In some cases it was to look for further refinement of an existing story (such as how the Swoosh came about) while in other cases it was purely for discovery purposes…sitting down with people and asking them about their contributions to a particular Nike shoe, piece of apparel, ad campaign, etc., and seeing where the conversation led. Over the ensuing years, as I interviewed more and more people, I was able to piece together a much more detailed and nuanced history of Nike, and that in turn enabled me to ask more probing and informed questions in my interviews. And the stories that DNA captured were becoming increasingly sought within the company, especially as early Nike ‘pioneers' retired or, sadly, passed on. DNA became THE resource for Nike's corporate heritage, culture and history. And it remains so today. In 2012, Phil Knight confided in me that he was planning to write a memoir and asked me to help him gather materials from the archive, especially from the earlier years before the company went public in 1980. I spent considerable time pulling together early correspondence, memos and other internal documents, and I gave him a detailed company timeline that I created from scratch (and at that time spanned more than 60 pages). I also sent him transcripts of interviews I had done with several of the earliest Nike employees that I hoped would help spur his own memories. All these materials helped him flesh out the framework and fill in details that ultimately resulted in Shoe Dog in 2016.All production by Cody Maxwell. Artwork by Cody Maxwell. Brett Sutton is joined by Joe Amato, the District Director at the Small Business Administration to discuss the latest updates in the Paycheck Protection Program and answers the attendee’s live questions. After that, Scott, a CPA based in Nevada, will discuss what you need to be aware of when trying to file your Federal loan tax credit for last year, and other tax info you need to consider. All the proceeds of this webinar will be going to the food bank of Northern Nevada. Highlights: What do we need to know about the second draw of PPP? Every application for PPP must be in before March 31st. The eligible expenses for PPP have changed. How are you eligible for a second draw? If you have a 25% or greater loss in revenue, you’re eligible. For PPP1 you need to be at 500 employees or less and for PPP2 you need to be at 300 employees or less. Do you have to apply for forgiveness in order to get a PPP second draw? Is your PPP taxable by the IRS? Do you have to use the same lender? The answer is no! Best places to contact a lender? Joe answers some pending questions! The whole idea of PPP is you get a fully-forgiven loan. It was unrealistic for the IRS to not let you deduct your expenses from a PPP loan. Applied for PPP and haven’t heard back? Scott takes the stage to discuss the Federal loan tax credit. How do you consider sick leave? There are special rules for the self-employed. Remote schooling? You might qualify for medical leave. You have delayed payment of your employee payroll taxes. What do you need to know about the PPP flexibility act? Make sure your bookkeepers are using the right credit and going through this manually! Some software is not automatically calculating this. The IRS is behind, but they will still be checking on these tax returns. With the PPP proceeds, are they tax-exempt income or are they capital contributions? This is tricky and we still need more clarification on this. Scott answers some questions! Should you keep your doctor’s notes to prove you have a legitimate request for medical leave? When we were approached in 2015 about helping to start a new podcast called "Fans of Power" to cover all things Masters of the Universe, we had no problem giving these guys a home. We've seen the show grow and change over the years. DiRT originally joined the show to help guide things along, but eventually stepped back and let the boys take control on their own. The show split into Masters of the Galaxy and Fans of Power, but now FoP had Joe Amato and Tyler Baker joined occasionally at first with Nathan Kennedy who later stepped in as a regular. Joe, Tyler, and Nathan have had their ups and downs and have worked hard to make Fans of Power into the show they've always wanted it to be. Recently, they decided to step out on their own and take the show out from under the PCN banner and see what they can do with it by themselves. There's no animosity, no grudges, and no anger here. We wish them all the best of luck and have linked below all the places where you can now find the show. Here at Pop Culture Network, we're proud to have been a part of their story and now look forward to the next great podcast to add to our portfolio. Could it be yours? Historically Thinking: Conversations about historical knowledge and how we achieve it
People of every place and time deserve a history. Only local and regional history satisfies the need to remember the most intimate matters, the things of childhood… –Joseph Amato, Rethinking Home: The Case for Local History These are the words today's conversation partner, Joseph Amato. Dr. Amato is a Professor Emeritus of History at Southwest State University in Marshall, Minnesota. Called (I think rightly) “a maverick historian of the first order”, Amato in his decades there was a principal founder of the Society of Local and Regional History, and authored numerous books on his region and locality. But he also has written histories of suffering, dust, walking, and surfaces, and to this list he will soon add a history of everyday life. He is a historian with probably a deeper philosophical and literary sensibility than most other historians think is quite right–he has even knowingly committed poetry. In the course of our conversation, we talk about how a nice boy from Detroit ever made it to southwest Minnesota, which even Minnesotans think of as far from everywhere else; why muskrats are more important than buffalo on the plains of southwest Minnesota; and what the "clandestine" is in local history. I also challenge him to explain why the local and regional matter in an era in which professional historians seem unable to come up with a reason to care about either. I hope you enjoy it, especially because next week we'll be having another conversation with Joe Amato, this time on family history and its importance. Have a good week! For Further Investigation In Episode 24 we first discussed local history, that time with Bob Beatty of the American Association of State and Local History. For something completely the opposite you might listen to Episode 26 with Peter Stearns on World History, or Episode 43 with Craig Benjamin on Big History. Joseph Amato has written and published a lot of books–too many to list here! But fortunately he has his own webpage and listing, which you can find here.
