Today's discussion was recorded in September of 2021, where we were joined by our returning guest, and long-time faculty member of the school, Ed Dodson. Mr. Dodson attended Shippensburg University and Temple University where he received an economics degree. Ed worked for Fannie Mae, a public-private partnership to help distribute home mortgage loans. During his time at Fannie Mae, Mr. Dodson held numerous management and analyst positions within the Housing & Community Development group, helping to revitalize neighborhoods and local communities. This gives him an interesting perspective on land use and reform, and how it can reduce inequality. He also has extensive experience as a history lecturer at the Osher Life Long Learning Institute and the Learning is For Everyone program at Burlington County College. Edward has written many papers on history and the political economy and is the author of a three-volume book series titled The Discovery of First Principles. Today, Mr. Dodson explains the impact of the American Rescue plan, and why it may not have helped the people it was most intended to. Ed helps break down a Georgist analysis of the macroenvironment pre-Covid, and how the American Rescue Plan fails to address its vulnerabilities.Ā To check out more of our content, including our research and policy tools, visit our website: https://www.hgsss.org/ --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/smart-talk-hgsss/support

Monday November 7, 2022 - This space has been reporting on the Cash App law created by the American Rescue Plan of March 2021. The law changed the tax reporting requirements for third-party payment apps from 200 Transactions AND $20,000 or more to $600 or more, no matter the number of transactions. This change went into effect on January 1, 2022. That means the new rule won't really come to light until February 2023 when the information Returns must be delivered to taxpayers. Third-party payment apps, like Venmo, paypall, Cash app, etc. are subject to this rule. But, early on, Zelle let consumers know they were not subject to this new rule. Because Zelle is not a third-party payment app. Instead, Zelle is a bank-to-bank payment service not subject to the 1099-K reporting rules. Attorney Steven A. Leahy will take a close look at Zelle's claim on Today's Tax Talk. https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2022-11-07/zelle-becomes-loophole-for-businesses-to-avoid-irs-venmo-tax --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/steven-leahy1/message

Emma hostsĀ Indi Dutta-Gupta,Ā President and Executive Director ofĀ The Center for Law and Social Policy (CLASP)Ā to discuss recentĀ pollingĀ showing that 2/3rds of parents who stopped receiving the Child Tax Credit in late 2021 reported difficulties obtaining enough food for their children. Then, Emma is joined byĀ Danielle Carr,Ā Assistant Professor at the Institute for Society and Genetics at UCLA, to discuss her recent Op-Ed piece for the New York TimesĀ "Mental Health Is Political".Ā First, Emma dives into updates on the White House's response to the leaked racist LA City Council audio and the return of legal (for now) abortions in Arizona, before diving deeper into Biden's response to OPEC's price gauging and criticisms of his relationship to Saudi Arabia (particularly in the wake of his campaigning on making them a āPariahā state). Then, Indi Dutta-Gupta joins as he gets right into the work that he does with the Center for Law and Social Policy, exploring how child poverty is largely a choice made by policy-makers when they ignore the already demonstrated social policy that can reduce it, with the Child Tax Credit and American Rescue plan more than proving the impact they can have both on poverty, and in flushing the economy with money (seeing a 9:1 return on the investment of the tax credit). Next, they tackle the greater cultural and political elements that reject these policies, with the bootstraps mentality leading to Manchin becoming the one vote that prevented the CTC from becoming a permanent policy, and how we see similar elements embedded in pre-existing policies such as SNAP. Dutta-Gupta wraps up the interview by parsing through the work CLASP has done to tackle a more anti-racist and community-driven SNAP, Ā and exploring how we can support the center from the outside. Danielle Carr then walks through the problem of medicalizing our view of mental health without also understanding the greater systemic and political intersections that can often be underlying causes. Next, they explore the rise of telepsychotherapy as an exploitative gig-economy institution that works to further medicalize the issue and detach it from social issues, before wrapping up the interview by exploring what kind of diseases mental health issues really are, and the failure of the DSM-type medical perspective in actually understanding how to approach them. And in the Fun Half: Emma and Bradley discuss the recent bipartisan hit pieces against John Fetterman in the wake of his return to the campaign trail after his stroke earlier this year, watching NBC's Dasha Burns and Lester Holt frame a recent interview around auditory and vocal issues making him a poor fit for office. They also dive into greater issues of mental health, as they tackle the exploitation of Kanye West and Hershel Walker by Tucker Carlson and the Georgia GOP, respectively, and Ben Shapiro responds with some real nuance on anti-Semitic threats. The Wisconsin Institute for Law & Liberty (WILL) filed a lawsuit in federal court challenging allegedly unconstitutional race discrimination in the American Rescue Planās provision to offer loan forgiveness based on racial categories. The plaintiffs are twelve farmers and ranchers from Wisconsin, Minnesota, South Dakota, Ohio, Missouri, Iowa, Arkansas, Oregon, and Kentucky. Each plaintiff would be eligible for the federal loan forgiveness program, but for their race. In response, U.S. District Judge William Griesbach issued a temporary restraining order on June 10, 2021 halting payments. Other cases subsequently resulted in similar orders. These lawsuits challenge the extent to which the government can prefer one racial group over another based on allegations of generalized societal or industry discrimination. Prior litigation had addressed allegations of particularized discrimination by the government against black farmers but this more traditional focus on discrimination and tailored remedy was thought by the administration to be inadequate. On Thursday's Mark Levin Show, the progressive movement is the application of Marxism to American society. Progressive intellectual John Dewey once wrote at great length about how well Stalin was doing with government-run education. Dewy felt that teaching subjects without a social purpose uniting children in support of their government. Dewey enjoyed the support of Democrats and Republicans like Teddy Roosevelt. The goal of the progressives has always been to control what is taught in the classroom and this is why small children are being indoctrinated against capitalism and success and to reject the family structure they come from. This is precisely what is taking place in our country today. Then, President Biden says that when your kids are in the classroom they're no longer your kids, in effect, suggesting that they now belong to the government and the teacher's union. Millions from the American Rescue plan went to schools for Critical Race Theory training in the name of the COVID pandemic. Kudos to all the parents and other citizens standing up against tyranny. Later, Sec. Mayorkas has proposed a 'disinformation governance board' at the Dept. of Homeland Security. All members of the free press should object to the creation of a government ministry of truth that decides what is true and what is false. All of this while the border remains open, and the economy shrinks by 1.4%. Afterward, filmmaker Dinesh D'Souza joins the show to discuss his latest film 2000 Mules which chronicles the actions of ballot mules delivering harvested ballots to COVID ballot boxes during the 2020 election. D'Souza explained how vote stash-houses work within leftwing democrat districts. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
This lecture is part of the 12th Annual KoÅciuszko Chair Spring Symposium in honor of Lady Blanka Rosenstiel sponsored by the KoÅciuszko Chair in Polish Studies and the Center for Intermarium studies. About the lecture: In early 1919, newly reborn Poland was virtually a landlocked country. Border conflicts caused by the geopolitical earthquake of World War I had brought international trade to a standstill. The only hope for economic relief and humanitarian aid to the war-ravaged nation was access to the Baltic sea through German-controlled Danzig. In the late winter of 1919, the small Mission to Danzig, led by the first chief of the American Relief Administration in Poland, Colonel William R. Grove, and the versatile Chief Delegate of the Polish Government, MieczysÅaw JaÅowiecki, would play an indispensable role in opening Poland's economy to the world, before the decisive showdown with Bolshevik Russia in 1920. About the speaker: Nicholas Siekierski earned his PhD at the Tadeusz Manteuffel Institute of History at the Polish Academy of Sciences in Warsaw. His dissertation, "Operations of the American Relief Administration in Poland, 1919-1922", tells the story America's critical role in the early history of the Second Polish Republic. Dr. Siekierski is also a translator, most recently of 485 Days at Majdanek, the memoir of concentration camp survivor Jerzy Kwiatkowski, published last year by the Hoover Institution. It was the subject of a presentation at last year's KoÅciuszko Chair Spring Symposium at IWP.

It was year ago on March 11, 2021, that President Biden signed the $1.9 trillion American Rescue Plan Act into law. The act set aside $5.7 billion in direct aid for Texas counties. In this episode, we look at the key points and questions associated with the American Rescue Plan.
The American Rescue Plan has distributed $125B across school districts in the US to ensure educators and students return to in person learning. During his keynote address as SXSW EDU, Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona, stated the money could be used to increase the pay of teachers, support professional development, and innovate schools. But without regulations in place to monitor the usage of funds the system remains broke with companies making profits, educators feeling defeated, and children still experiencing learning loss. From his humble beginnings in Puerto Rico to a "class clown" to a twenty-year veteran educator, Dr. Cardona has traveled a long road and, in his words, "my stripes are the same." As the Biden Administration rolls out American Rescue legislation, Kev and Gera as him questions about the expenditures, investment, and future of American education in this contentious time. On this episode of the Building Local Power Podcast, host Jess Del Fiacco is joined by her colleagues on the broadband team, DeAnne Cuellar who leads our community broadband outreach work, and Sean Gonsalves who is a senior reporter and editor. They discuss where the bulk of the broadband funding from the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act is geared toward and how to engage local champions to create community broadband strategies. Highlights include: How states will be impacted by the fact that cooperatives, nonprofits, public utilities, and local governments are eligible to use Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act funds to build networks. Which states are well-poised to submit a five year strategic plan before accessing the broadband money and which states are not. How digital equity organizing efforts in LA County are a perfect example of a willingness to collaborate, design community solutions, and be community-driven in terms of building better broadband infrastructure. Why having access to telehealth and remote learning are human rights. Ā āThe bill largely targets rural America, which is sort of unfortunate, because it feeds into this idea that the digital divide is between urban and rural America, which isn't the case. Jess Del Fiacco: So happy to have you guys on the show. And with that, let's dive into some questions for Sean. So last fall, I believe Congress passed the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act so Sean, could you talk about that as it relates to the broadband world? Maybe we can start with just a general description of what's in this bill. Sean Gonsalves: Good question. Good question because there's different pots of money that are floating out of there, floating from the federal government to states and so this shouldn't be confused with the American Rescue Plan money, which has already made its way to state coffers and the difference really between the money that's available in the American Rescue plan and the money that is going to be available once it makes its way to the states in the infrastructure bill is that the American Rescue Plan money is a lot more flexible, which is important. Sean Gonsalves: So the money that goes to the states and local communities, it gives a lot of wiggle room, the spending rules. There's a lot of wiggle room on how you can spend those funds, which includes the ability of local communities to define what's considered affordable and reliable and use that to justify deploying networks or initiat...

CBS News senior White House and political correspondent Ed O'Keefe speaks to fiscal policy expert Liz Farmer about her reporting on this issue. She's found that the money going towards small localities is so much more than they're used to receiving, they'd have to go through unprecedented efforts to keep track of it all. It's prompting questions about whether towns and counties with normally small budgets even want to deal with the federal funding at all.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
