ChatGPT and cultural differences About This Week: ChatGPT and cultural differences In this podcast episode, we will talk about: What is ChatGPT? Who will embrace ChatGPT (and who will not)? What is the future and what will come after ChatGPT? And we'll make some other side-steps in AI-related subjects "We still have to think as humans and not as machines." ChatGPT and cultural differences; This is what ChatGPT said itself "ChatGPT is a cutting-edge AI language model developed by OpenAI, designed to generate human-like text based on the input provided. It has been trained on a vast corpus of text data and can respond to a wide range of questions and prompts with high accuracy. However, it is important to keep in mind that as a machine, ChatGPT lacks the cultural experiences and nuances that come with being human. Cultural differences can greatly affect how language is used and understood, so it's important to consider these differences when communicating with ChatGPT and interpreting its responses." Jessica Stone About This Week's Guest Jessica Stone Jessica Stone is an international journalist who can attest to the power and the purpose behind what we are doing here on the Culture Matters Podcast. She has written a book sharing her stories of cross-cultural adventures and what she learned. The book outlines 20 lessons ranging from different parts of the US to China, Afghanistan, and Vietnam to France and Brazil. "In many countries a woman is not treated like a woman." If you're managing a cross-cultural team, remember that you're all on the same team; communicate the common goal you're all after because the way people communicate will be different across different cultures. You don't have to lose your own culture and you don't have to change yourself when dealing with different cultures. Definitions of "law & truth" are often very different in different cultures; particularly in Asian cultures. How will business change after Corona? What will be the cultural implications? What this podcast will be about: The World Will Never be the Same; or Will it? For some, working from home was already part of their daily work-life. For many, it has been a forced decision due to circumstances or simple corporate-imposed measures. When it comes to working from home, we know a couple of things from different surveys: People are generally happier People work longer hours Colleagues have gotten to know each other better (because of video conferencing while doing the laundry, etc.) Certain bosses from certain cultures have started to have more (not always productive) online meetings, just to keep some sort of an eye on their co-workers (more about that later) There is less pollution due to less home-work travel We’ve discovered (worldwide) that we’re really social beings There are some that believe that more and more will be automated and hence, jobs will be lost In short, we believe that there will be a so-called “new normal” but we’ll get used to that soon enough. Should you want to know more, contact us! How to do Business in the US Why the US is Sometimes Ahead and Sometimes Behind In this podcast, we talk about the current development (early December 2020) about how different cultures/countries deal and have dealt with the current (at the time of this pandemic) situation going on. "Sometimes the USA is ahead of the rest of the world, and sometimes they're behind". Why is it that the US constructed an ultra-modern Interstate system in 1950 that at this moment is in such a relatively bad state that it will need billions to get it up to current standards. And why do companies like Amazon, Google, Apple lead the way when it comes to looking forward and being ahead of most of the rest of the world (mind you, China is possibly even further ahead than the US when it comes to AI). We look at the current situation from a business perspective and add a theoretical framework around it so you can better understand how to do business with the US. Get Culturally Competent when Doing Business in the US The main message of this podcast is that if you want to do business with the USA, even if you're from a comparable culture like the UK, there is an absolute necessity to get culturally competent. Understand how the Americans think, work, and do. Your business success will largely depend on how well you understand the other culture; in this case when you want to do business in the US Want to Listen More? The Culture Matters in International Business Podcast A new Format for this Podcast Your Hosts: Chris Smit Peter van der Lende "Understanding cultural differences can be the descisive factor in success or failure in International Business" In this short introduction podcast, we explain the new set-up of our podcast: We'll take a look at the impact that cultural differences have on doing International Business. Some topics that you can expect are: Why the US is Sometimes Ahead and Sometimes Behind (Airport Tech.) Direct and Unfiltered Feedback: The Problem (Dutch) North versus South (America, The Predictability Dimension) Trial and Error or Engineering (German versus American) Fair Warning or Caricaturing (The Undutchables)? Do as The Romans Do (but not in Italy – KLM and Alitalia) The Costliest International Failures Let Me Summarize (Please Don’t), North European vs South European The Far East is Not Far if You’re There (something on Asia) Something related to fake news? The rudest people on earth (Dutch, Russian) The most polite … What dominates: Company culture or National culture? How does personality relate to one’s national culture? Can you get “rid” of your national culture (e.g., when you live in another country)? The “superiority notion” when it comes to you and the “other” culture. Unexpected cultural correlations: the use of deodorant, gambling/lottery/scratch cards. Bart De Pau About This Week's Guest Bart De Pau Bart De Pau was born to a Dutch father and a Belgian mother and grew up in Zeeland (the province that is famous for its massive sea defenses). He set up a Summer/Winter School: intensive Dutch courses with accommodation. Some years ago, He started to video interviews with the students of the Summer/Winter School in front of a blue background. When foreigners share their experiences, other foreigners can benefit from them. That was the idea... but it appeared that Dutch people liked to watch foreigners talking about their language and culture even more. Result: 4-5 million views per month on YouTube and Facebook combined. "The biggest shock to non-Dutch is the Dutch directness" Listen to what others say. Don't just be able to hear what they say, but actually listen. Explore the differences between you as an expat and your Dutch host; what's the perspective of both parties? Talking about language: Learn it! Rachel Jensen About This Week's Guest Rachel Jensen Over 8 years ago, Rachel moved from New York to a small Caribbean island off the coast of Belize for a job. Today she still calls Ambergris Caye home and despite the cultural differences and nuances, she has adapted to a slower, and easier pace life in Central America. "I was in a real New York state of mind. Now my life is a lot simpler and easier." Her tips on becoming more culturally competent are: Understand that you're a visitor; you don't have the right to criticize the other (country/culture). Some countries are less or not confrontational, so maybe you shouldn't be either. Live simply if that's the local lifestyle; don't be tied down by your stuff.
