This episode of Cider Chat, was recorded in person with Abram Goldman-Armstrong at CiderCon2025 in Chicago. Hear his journey to cider. Abram began fermenting cider as a student in Minnesota and went on to found the cidery known as Cider Riot in Portland, Oregon. The Cider Riot Years Cider Riot grew from a home cider making project into a well-regarded cider brand and pub. Abram describes building the business, navigating challenges like rising rent and market shifts, and the significance of Cider Riot as a political and cultural hub. The pub hosted community meetings, union organizers, and events that reflected Portland's activist spirit. Standing Against Far-Right Violence On May 1, 2019, Cider Riot became the site of a violent confrontation when members of the far-right group Patriot Prayer, led by Joey Gibson, clashed with patrons during a May Day celebration. The altercation resulted in injuries, including a woman being knocked unconscious. Abram filed a $1 million lawsuit against Gibson and others involved, alleging that they had instigated the attack. The incident drew national attention and highlighted the challenges faced by businesses taking a stand against hate groups. Relocating to Norway After Cider Riot closed in late 2019, Abram accepted an offer to collaborate with cider makers in Norway. He began working with a small brewery before moving west to Hardanger, where he now produces cider at Alde Sider. The region has a long history of apple growing and is the first in Norway to receive a protected designation for cider. De l'autre côté de la route, certains passants anti-Trump n'hésitent pas à répondre par des bras d'honneur. Au bout d'une heure, le cortège arrive devant le Capitole de l'Oregon, dans la ville de Salem. Quelques militants « Black Lives Matters » les attendent avant d'être chassés à coup de batte de baseball par des miliciens également armés de fusils d'assaut. « Ils veulent lancer une guerre raciale. Si le gouvernement ne réagit pas, si nos élus continuent de dire que Black Lives Matters mènent des protestations pacifique au lieu de dire que ce sont des terroristes intérieur, nous courrons à la guerre civile. Oui la guerre civile. C'est ce que va se passer, fulmine un militant suprémaciste raciste et soutien de Donald Trump, oui il faut vraiment chercher des années et des années avant lui pour trouver meilleur président. » Aucun mort cette fois-ci, mais chaque camp promet de revenir manifester dans Portland, qui a depassé ce weekend les 100 jours consécutifs de protestations anti raciste depuis la mort de George Floyd à Minneapolis. Faisant de cette ville de la côte ouest le symbole des division de l'Amérique.

Like many messages discovered in a records request made in August by the Portland Mercury, it reflects many of the public's suspicions that the Portland police have been sympathetic—if not protective—of the right-wing extremist group. It's not unusual for PPB officers to contact activists who may be planning a protest. But usually, these conversations exist only so PPB can quickly get in touch with a protest group to get an idea of how many people will show up to participate or to ask about general schedule. While Niiya does ask Gibson about crowd sizes and planned future protests, he also chose to regularly give Gibson a heads up about counter-protesters and sympathize with Gibson's frustrations.

In this segment, I speak with Spencer Sunshine — researcher, journalist, activist, and political consultant regarding Far Right movements. Spencer discusses of the recent controversy surrounding Gavin McInnis, founder of the Proud Boys, and his invitation to speak at the Metropolitan Republican Club in New York City, in which a group of Proud Boys openly attacked protesters after the event. We discuss the lack of police interference in the beatings, and the overall trend in policing and law enforcement's attitude toward Far Right movements in the US. We also discuss the differences and similarities between what has been defined as the “Alt-Right” and the “Alt-Lite,” and what these two camps of Far Right ideology have accomplished in the past year in the expansion and normalization of Far Right rhetoric and violence. We also discuss other strains of Far Right organization and ideology, including Joey Gibson and Patriot Prayer, as well the Left's altogether lack of preparedness in addressing the looming threat posed by these groups.  Spencer Sunshine holds a PhD in Sociology and has been an activist for over 25 years. Currently, he is an associate fellow at Political Research Associates, a progressive think tank that monitors right-wing organizing. He was present at the armed occupation of the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge outside of Burns, Oregon in January 2016, and at the demonstration against the fascist-led “Unite the Right” rally in Charlottesville, Virginia in August 2017. Sunshine is the lead author of 'Up in Arms: A Guide to Oregon’s Patriot Movement.' He is currently working on a new book, ‘Unorthodox Fascism: The New Right, Third Positionism, and the Specter of Multiracial Fascism in the United States,’ which will appear on Routledge’s Studies in Fascism and the Far Right. In this episode, I speak with researcher, journalist, activist, and political consultant regarding Far Right movements Spencer Sunshine. The last time I spoke with Spencer Sunshine was a year ago, soon after the "Unite The Right" rally in Charlottesville, North Carolina in August 2017, in which we discussed the fallout of that event. In this conversation, we catch up on the development of the Far Right over the past year. We start this discussion with an examination of the recent controversy surrounding Gavin McInnis, founder of the Proud Boys, and his invitation to speak at the Metropolitan Republican Club in New York City, in which a group of Proud Boys openly attacked protesters after the event. We discuss the lack of police interference in the beatings, and the overall trend in policing and law enforcement's attitude toward Far Right movements in the US, and internationally as well, and what this means regarding the development and expansion on these movements. We also discuss the differences and similarities between what has been defined as the “Alt-Right” and the “Alt-Lite,” and what these two camps of Far Right ideology have accomplished in the past year in the expansion and normalization of Far Right rhetoric and violence. We also discuss other strains of Far Right organization and ideology, including Joey Gibson and Patriot Prayer, as well the Left's altogether lack of preparedness in addressing the looming threat posed by these groups.  Spencer Sunshine holds a PhD in Sociology and has been an activist for over 25 years. Currently, he is an associate fellow at Political Research Associates, a progressive think tank that monitors right-wing organizing. He was present at the armed occupation of the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge outside of Burns, Oregon in January 2016, and at the demonstration against the fascist-led “Unite the Right” rally in Charlottesville, Virginia in August 2017. Sunshine is the lead author of 'Up in Arms: A Guide to Oregon’s Patriot Movement.' This week we dive deep into the Mayor's new ordinance that potentially breaks with the First Amendment in restricting the right to assemble and protest within city limits. We also review the Mayor's highly controversial reveal - employed to help justify the ordinance: that prior to the August 4th Patriot Prayer protest, police discovered members of the far right group on a rooftop with a cache of firearms in close proximity to the start of the rally. Additionally, Senator Dianne Feinstein said the Senate hearing should be delayed to allow a proper investigation and the SCOTUS pick, Brett Kavanaugh, is reportedly ready to testify that he was not at the high school party in question. Trump said it would be “wonderful” if Kavanaugh’s accuser showed up for Monday’s scheduled hearing that media is already gearing up as a spectacle to rival the Clarence Thomas and Anita Hill saga.
