Making a Scene Brings you an Interview with Bart BryantHow does a Connecticut transplant from Baltimore grow to pull off Austin-style hard drivin' heavy Blues & Rock and Roll? While from Baltimore, his fluid vocals and Blues-Rock guitar style have entertained audiences in Connecticut and Austin, Texas since his teens. His solo acoustic and band (Current) work in New Haven, CT and the Tri-State area gained him access to producers. By the late 70s Bart started recording his original songs. Recognition also brought warm-up band gigs for national acts at Toad's Place. Work with legendary artists like The Roches, Jorma Kaukonen, Poco, Pousette-Dart Band, Jonathan Edwards, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Aztec Two-Step, Pure Prairie League, Johnny Winter, John Butcher, New Riders of the Purple Sage all had influence on Bryant's work & aspirations. http://www.makingascene.org

As I type this we are getting pounded with another 9" of snow, the second pounding in less than a week. Combine that with semi-lockdown we are still under and it sort of feels like I'm in a research station outpost about to hunker down for The Long Polar Night. Most of the titles fit the theme as well as the feel of the tunes.. I added some weather radio recordings throughout the mix which I think worked out pretty well. One happy accident that happened while putting this together is I accidently left two tracks by two different artists in the same spot. I didn't even notice at first. They were playing simultaneously and it sounded like it was meant to be that way. This happens at 51:21 of the mix. Cheers and stay warm! „Collaborating is the main life force for me.“ Two inspiring harpists have met for the Darmstadt On Air podcast #13: Gunnhildur Einarsdóttir is an Icelandic harpist based in Berlin, founding member of Ensemble Adapter and harp tutor of the Darmstadt Summer Course since 2014. She invited harpist and improviser Rhodri Davies, who is a based in Swansea, South Wales. He plays harp, electric harp, live-electronics and builds wind, water, ice, dry ice and fire harp installations. Rhodri has released five solo albums and is also working in different constellations with artists like John Butcher, John Tilbury, Michael Duch and many others. Gunnhildur and Rhodri both studied with the Welsh harpist Sioned Williams and it was through her that they first heard of each other. The two harpists have both been doing pioneering work in order to invigorate the harp repertoire with new pieces. They also share an artistic approach that is very much based on collaboration and cooperation. Their conversation is about choosing collaborators, about ego and trust, about Rhodri’s collaboration with Eliane Radigue, who wrote the first of her OCCAM pieces for him, about verbal transmission of interpreters‘ knowledge, about the grey area between improvisation and composition, and about diving into a composer’s world and inhabiting in it with one’s own ideas and sounds.

We’re headed back down under this week with Australian group Hoodoo Gurus and their third album, Blow Your Cool! The Gurus formed Sydney in 1981 under songwriter, guitarist, and lead singer Dave Faulkner. The group was fleshed out by Richard Grossman on bass, Mark Kingmill on drums, and Brad Shepherd on guitar, harmonica, and vocals. Hoodoo Gurus were most popular on college radio, and this album was released at the peak of their popularity. The Gurus were influenced by B movies and pop culture of the 60's, and the similarity to the B-52's is clear.Friend of the show Joel Nabors brings us this album, which he heard at Auburn on WETL. Enjoy this trip back to “college in the 80's!” Party Machine This upbeat song features Brad Shepherd on harmonica, and is a song about getting paid, having no obligations for the weekend, and headed out to party. "Dig my words, it's a happening scene! Hitch a ride on the Party Machine."The Middle of the LandThis track is a little more hard rock oriented, with heavy percussion. It is about evangelical preachers and hypocrisy. What's My SceneA catchy guitar riff starts this song which was the most popular one off the album. It's about looking at life and love, and wondering when you're time will come. "Now the stage is set, where's my Juliet, baby?" Good TimesThis is a fun song which features The Bangles on background vocals. There was a planned tour co-headlined between the Hoodoo Gurus and The Bangles, but the skyrocketing popularity of The Bangles at the time resulted in the Gurus being the opening act. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:The theme from the television series “The Twilight Zone” In May 1987, "The Twilight Zone" motion picture director John Landis was found not guilty of involuntary manslaughter in the death of actor Vic Morrow and two child actors, killed in a helicopter accident. STAFF PICKS:“Holy War” by John Butcher AxisWayne's staff pick features a rocking song with an easter feel from New England songwriter John Butcher. This song describes people who use religion to fight a holy war. Butcher identified with Jimi Hendrix, and the name Axis comes from the Hendrix album "Axis: Bold as Love." “Midnight Blue” by Lou GrammBrian brings us the lead single from Foreigner frontman Lou Gramm's solo debut. "Life is simple. It's either cherry red, or midnight blue." Cherry red is everything going well, midnight blue is dark and mysterious. They lyrics describe a couple who are broken up, but the boy vows to come back again.“Weapons of Love” by The TruthRob's staff pick digs deep from a group formed in 1982. This is The Truth's best selling single, and the title track from their album of the same name. Weapons of Love peaked at number 7 on the rock charts. “Just Like Heaven” by The CureJoel rounds us out this week with a well-known song from another college rock favorite. It sounds surprisingly upbeat, though still somehow melancholy, from ordinarily dark goth group The Cure. "Spinning on that dizzy edge. I kissed her face, I kissed her head." INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:"Initiation" by HelloweenThis instrumental track opens German heavy metal Helloween's album "The Keeper of the Seven Keys: Part I."
