Hey, Roar Nation! Jon Fuller here for today's episode as we cover three of my favorite subjects: faith, business, and entrepreneurship. I'm joined by Terry Brisbane, the lead pastor at Cornerstone Church in San Francisco. Terry started at Cornerstone as a youth minister and later took over as lead pastor for his grandfather, the church's founding pastor. As a native San Franciscoan, Terry understands why the city presents unique challenges when it comes to reaching people for Christ and proclaiming the message of Jesus. He has co-authored The Faith Code with Rusty Rueff. The book is for people with a biblical hunger to learn more about Jesus and His teachings, specifically applying them to business and entrepreneurship.  Jon and Terry begin by discussing how Luke 22:32-33 are pivotal life scripture verses for Terry's ministry and his efforts to strengthen his brethren in Christ. Terry describes how he was raised in church being greatly influenced by his grandfather's pastoral ministry, but didn't meet Jesus personally and find his “center court” until his high school years. That moment became the impetus for his life of ministry and serving with his grandfather in the church. Terry explains the importance of yielding to authority, using authority with humility, and submitting to God's authority as we walk in alignment with His will for our lives.  In an overview of The Faith Code, Terry shares how the book was birthed from a burden to connect faith and work with biblical principles. The book explains how our identity is formed by the different cultures we encounter, with Jesus as the ultimate model in how He formed his leadership team of disciples and apostles. The “faith code” begins in our lives with the foundation we stand upon, and we must be sure that it is not dictated by the culture around us but by our identity in Christ. Terry wraps up with his best advice to his younger self and his admonition to listeners to stay in love with Jesus.    Resources: Connect with Terry Brisbane and Cornerstone Church: Website, YouTube Channel, and The Faith Code Explore our podcast episodes and find resources at areyoureal.org.

You’re going to fail, and you need to be okay with failure because all of us have done it, but failures don’t define you.  The only thing that eliminates fear is action. Action cures fear. “Just go for your dream, realize you’re gonna fall flat on your face, learn from it and then just keep moving forward.”  Jon Fuller About Jon Fuller: Jon is a devoted husband for over 20 years, father of 3, entrepreneur, and host of the podcast, “Are You Real”. Jon Fuller Podcast Episode This is a dual episode that is on RU Real as well as on Psyche of Success. This was recorded months back, but the conversation is as relevant today as ever. Jon Fuller In the beginning, success was just about the money. Now, success is about fulfilling my purpose. It is our job to find our gifts and talents and then to live into those things. We find success in different areas of our lives. Prayer is the key to pushing through the tough times. It is also the key to controlling your words. When we keep our cool, ask for God’s guidance, and then listen, we can make through even the toughest arguments. Jody Holland In the beginning, success was about chasing the things / stuff / money. I was miserable chasing the wrong thing. I am an author, speaker, and trainer. Success is about living into my authentic self. To push through tough times, it is me trying to get through the mental doubts that plague me. I step back and ensure I have a clear definition of me. When I am fully me, I am happy. When I help other people, I find joy. Jon Fuller What keeps Jon awake is not being able to live into his purpose and not being the man he needs to be for his family. He also stresses at times to ensure he does a great job at work. Jody Holland I worry that I am not doing enough. I always want people to feel they got tremendous value as well as tremendous entertainment when they meet with me, listen to me, or engage with me. Jon has a book on Amazon called DIY: Remodel Your Life. You can find it here: https://www.amazon.com/dp/1633900479/ref=cm_sw_em_r_mt_dp_U_jujiEb7SZS45M When we manage our day and what we allow into the day, we manage our success. Spend your time ensuring that you do what you are supposed to do each and every day. Faith, Family, Fun, Finance, Fitness are the 5 things that Jon teaches on for people to find the success they desire. You need to set goals for each of the areas of your life. You can’t stack all your goals into one single area. Jon Fuller - Best Advice Love God. Love People. Do what is best for everyone. Always consider that you reap what you sow. Jody Holland - Best Advice at the time… Nobody is stopping you. When you think about finding and achieving success, you have the choice to do what you want to do. The only excuse we have for not being where we want to be is that we have not chosen to move forward. In Rustenburg, South Africa, where today AIDS is disproportionately impacting girls and young  women, a Catholic bishop and religious sister promote education and empowerment, and offer a pro-life argument for the use of condoms in HIV and AIDS prevention. Then, returning to the United States, Mike speaks with medical doctor and Jesuit priest Jon Fuller about the stubbornly high rate of HIV within marginalized communities, and how remembering the AIDS crisis of the 1980s and 90s can break down intergenerational barriers between people living with HIV and AIDS. Finally, the series wraps with a reflection on the key takeaways from the podcast—and a consideration of what’s at the heart of the broader debates over LGBT issues in the Catholic Church today. Jay and Jed bring you another action-packed episode this week , and they start things off by discussing Jay breaking down and crying like a little child, Jed being awe-struck by a very on-point sermon he heard, and reading probably THE most akward text message ever from Dirty Mike. Then, Jed gets a chance to talk to Jon Fuller; author, podcaster and all-around badass. Man..I'm really into hyphens aren't I? They discuss what it means to be "real", and dive deep into Jon's past, where they find some striking similarities. Then Jed gets a prophetic word for him..and it's a good one. We round it out with a TIL about the reproductive habits of honey bees. Yup. Today’s show is something of a departure; I’m talking about someone who is crucial to global food security and yet who is almost unknown. It’s true, as Jean-Henri Fabre, the French naturalist wrote, that “History ... knows the names of the king's bastards but cannot tell us the origin of wheat.” Most people are blissfully unaware of the men and women who created the plant varieties that keep us fed. I say as much at the beginning of the show, when I guess that perhaps one in a hundred people can name a plant breeder, and that the name they’re most likely to come up with is that of Norman Borlaug. (The true stats, from a very small, self-selected sample, are somewhat different. Two out of 13 – about 15% – can name a plant breeder, although neither of the names they came up with was Borlaug’s.) I thought Borlaug might be the most familiar plant breeder because he is credited as being the Father of the Green Revolution, for work that won a Nobel Peace Prize in 1970. Nazareno Strampelli, an Italian plant breeder, exactly foreshadowed Borlaug’s work by about four decades. His wheats doubled production in Italy and beyond and were crucial to the second green revolution ushered in by Borlaug. He was born on 29 May 1866, 150 years ago as I write this. He deserves to be better known (as do all plant breeders, actually). Notes There is very little about Strampelli’s life and work in English. I am indebted to Sergio Salvi for his books, articles and time, without which I could not have produced this episode. Music for the show graciously provided by Jon Fuller, aside from bits of soundtrack lifted from archive Italian newsreel. The banner image I grabbed from Ridley Scott’s Gladiator; it’s a little in joke for anyone who does know even a smidgen of the history of wheat. There is so much more to the story of Strampelli and the early days of plant breeding; would you be interested in an e-book?

"We want you to be involved." Thank you to Jon Fuller, Senior Associate Director Admissions, and Diana Economy, Associate Director of Admissions at Michigan Ross for an outstanding Q&A! In the following excerpt you’ll read about Ross’s strengths and what distinguishes Ross from other top MBA programs: Linda Abraham:  "How is Ross' program different from other top programs? Is there anything in particular?" Now, I know that you know the Ross program best, so let me rephrase that question if I could and say "What do you think Ross is particularly strong at?" Jon Fuller: Not that we're a one-trick pony with the action-based learning component, but that is definitely something that I think is a big differentiating factor to our students’ experience within our program; is that, again, through MAP and a lot of other experiences, such as through our institutes and centers, through student life experience, and the clubs and organizations that our students lead and develop, there are many, many opportunities to take theory and put it into practice, and to put it in practice in a context that actually has significant impact and significant weight to it. ...Our philosophy is "Why should you wait until you graduate from your MBA program to actually try some of these things out, to try some of these learnings out and apply them to the real world?" There’s a safety net in some ways for you to test yourself, to test your boundaries, and to experiment, but at the same time, there are real stakes involved... ... I'm always struck by is the engagement of our student body in terms of actually making the Ross experience their own, and really shaping and having a significant role and actually providing direction to the school. We have over seventy different student organizations and clubs. All of them are student run. Of course, there may be a faculty advisor and there is staff support to these organizations, but the students have ultimate say in terms of what the programming is...We tell people, we want you to be involved...and if you don't see something here that exists that is of interest to you, then make it happen. ...So students are very active. It is not a passive existence, or a passive experience that they have, and I think that's a real distinguishing feature to the extent that that happens, at the Ross school. Diana Economy: I think our alumni base is very much a distinguishing factor. I noticed that both as a student as well as an alum. I think to further Jon's point about the connection that students have with one another through their experience here and co-creating this great experience that develops these very strong bonds that they continue on as alum. I think our alumni feel very strongly about giving back. Of course, University of Michigan's got one of the largest living alumni bases anywhere. And as a Ross graduate, you're not just a part of the Ross school of business graduate community; you're part of a larger University of Michigan community. You could pick up the phone anywhere in the world and call somebody who was a law school alum or an undergraduate alum or a med school alum, and you're part of that broader network. Which of course, when you go to business school, you're not just preparing for that first job out of business school, but essentially for your whole career. Having that strong alumni base is something that we feel is very strong here. For the full Q&A, please view the Michigan Ross MBA transcript or listen to the audio file.
