This week on Monday Mile I head into Central London, to link up with a man who is known as the cat, one of Cricket's greatest all time Bowlers. He's been King of the Jungle and has danced on BBC's Strictly, and more recently is just out of the Legends Jungle in South Africa. He's got an infectious energy and is known for making people smile on our screens, from Question of Sport to fronting the BBC cricket coverage, and I managed to catch up with Phil during a busy time ahead of the Ashes. We caught up on all things Cricket, the changes he has seen within the game now as a Commentator on the other side of the sport, from the turn of professionalism, and the awareness and support with Mental health. Phil shares his episode with depression, and lack of support back in the day - “In those days you were just told to roll your sleeves up and get on with it, it was a sign of weakness”. He shares his experience on “I'm a Celebrity, and his ability to step back and juggle personalities in that environment whilst being stuck in a box, below ground surrounded by snakes. He leans on his experience and time as an athlete “if someone's down, you pick them up”. Aimee will be probing for answers from the full spectrum of routines; the early birds who have finely tuned Monday mornings, to the late risers who struggle to get up before 11am. This week on Monday Mile, we head to West London to link up with Isa Guha. Today's guest is really making her mark as one of the newer faces in the next generation of broadcast. From the Ashes, to her latest role at Wimbledon anchoring the coverage for BBC each morning. We chat through the mindset and approach in taking new reins at Wimbledon, the associated pressures and dealing with any controversial comments in the media. In the words of Isa, ”I felt the need to say, I'm not here to be the next Sue Barker". We discuss Isa's journey through sport as a Former England Cricketer who played in two World Cup's and the importance of working together as a team to bring the best to any broadcast. This podcast isn't all glossy though, Isa has experienced significant loss and trauma, so we discuss the topic of grief, and dealing with and how she has channelled her Mum's energy in her charity "Take her Lead", through living out her values using her Mum's philosophy to encourage young girls to get our there and get out of their comfort zone. Through the journey of grief, we chat about self-discovery, the ability of being able to carry on through the pain, guilt, frustration and anger, and finally finding peace with it eventually. This week on Monday Mile, I head into Central London. Today's guest is the CEO of EE and heads up the UK's biggest consumer business in the country and best fixed AND mobile networks. It's Marc Allera. As a man in demand and a hefty schedule, Marc doesn't often get the opportunity to have a lunch time stroll, for him it's normally a 6am gym session and then bouncing from meeting to meeting. However today, he has somehow managed to find a break in his schedule to join us for a mile, and let us into some of his secrets when it comes to decision making and the number one thing that contributes to his success in running the ship in a business at the heart of technology that never sleeps. We tap into his mindset and how he balances the demands of such a high powered job in providing a service that is so systemically important (THE INTERNET). We discuss the immense pressure and responsibilities that come with looking after the welfare of thousands of employees inn the UK, and the introduction of working from home and the positive and negative mental health impact of this forward thinking change. Marc shares his thoughts on the workplace, and the office not just as a base, but a place for people to learn and grow off each other and to communicate, highlighting the importance of real human interaction. Marc shares some of the steps he took and the process he followed for those that are interested in emulating a similar career path. This week on Monday Mile I link up with a British Paralympic swimmer in Regent's Park, a place to her that feels a little like home in the City of London. In 2008 she won two Gold medals for Great Britain and was the youngest member of the team. She then went on to win two Golds yet again, and claim the World record in 2012 and another Gold in Rio 2016. This week I am talking to Ellie Simmonds! Ellie received an MBE in recognition of her achievements, and in fact she is, the youngest to ever receive one, she's also got an OBE and is an advocate for representation across disability. Ellie opens up about the moment when she did feel different, “as a kid there was, you know when you have this moment, and your friends are all tall” . We discuss the issues around disability representation, what it's going to take to change that and some of the issues she has experienced along the way, “I've had people pat me on the head, and rub me on the cheek” . This week on Monday Mile I link up with one of Britain's most exciting Olympic talents, not just because she has two Commonwealth Golds in her back pocket and made the Olympic final at the age of 16, but because she's a role model and advocate for debunking stereotypes around aesthetics and body image. I'm chatting to Andrea Spendolini-Sirieix. After one of her training sessions at the Olympic Park in London, we chat about juggling her A levels as well as a full time diving career, and Andrea talks openly about the mental load and emotional fatigue associated with this pressure, and how she manages it. We also open up the conversation around her extra studies (an EPQ), which is a personal choice to develop her own knowledge after the struggle with eating and body confidence especially within an aesthetic sport like diving. She's strong, she is empowering and everything I admire in an athlete. We also talk about Paris 2024 as the countdown is now on, and the home-field advantage and Andrea's mindset going into it. This week on Monday Mile I link up with one of the strongest people I know, in fact she has deadlifted me before! The word inspiration is often banded around lightly but today I will be referencing the term and it's not to be taken lightly. Emily Campbell, is Britain's most successful Weightlifter. She's our Olympic Silver Medalist and the current European Champion. She's a Northern lass that can snatch the weight of a baby elephant… casual eh?! Emily is in town for a regular check in with the team Physio, so we hit the pavements in Covent Garden for a stroll. We chat about her passion for changing the way women feel about body image, her current work with Nike… and the mass drive for inclusion of women of all sizes. She also gives us an insight into life as an athlete, the reality of the physical work load and the ‘baseline of Doms' . She also shares the truth of not knowing what it's like "to not be in pain whilst sitting on the toilet" and "if I've not got something to hold onto, I'm not getting down there“ . She shares her tips on confidence, “Once you look in the mirror and think damn I look good, it gives you the confidence to go out there and execute whatever you need to do” as well as stressing the importance in physical literacy - “There are girls out there that are standard size that are made to feel massive because the biggest size they can find on the shelf is a 14 or a 16”. Aimee will be probing for answers from the full spectrum of routines; the early birds who have finely tuned Monday mornings, to the late risers who struggle to get up before 11am. Hello and Welcome to a new episode of the Monday Mile Podcast, this week's guests are joining me in central London for a little stroll ahead of a very big race this upcoming weekend. It's the London Marathon, and today I am joined by Scott Mitchell, the husband of the late Dame Barbara Windsor and former Easterners actress Tanya Franks who are two of the pivotal "members" of Babs' Army. We link up on a beautiful sunny day in central London and discuss the incredible work both Tanya and Scott have done in the fight against dementia, and of course their incredible running feats . We chat about the highs of Marathon running, the training, and the Babs' Army squad, as well as the mission they are on to raise £50,000 as they cross that finish line on the 23rd of April. Both Tanya and Scott share personal experiences with the disease, and expand on what it is, and how it has affected them both - Scott as a devoted husband and carer and the pressures associated with that, and Tanya talks about her experience sadly with her stepfather. Tanya speaks openly about her mission to prevent the disease and shares some of the preventative steps that can be made to put a hold on the number 1 killer in the UK. This week on the Monday Mile Podcast, we are joined by not one, but 2 special guests. It's Caroline De More and Isabella. Caz is a BBC Broadcaster and has covered a wide series of events from Football focus, the EWC, The Olympic Games and most recently the Football World Cup out in Qatar. She's extremely humble, she's a polyglot (if you don't know what that means…. she speaks 4 languages),and she is without a doubt one of the most underrated presenters in the industry. She joins me on a rather chilly day in Queen's Park, London. Caz is actually one of my best friends, so it's a funny one interviewing her, however one thing we both love to do is chat. This Mile is a little different as we will be joined by her beautiful baby daughter Isabella to discuss life, routine and the challenges associated with being a freelancer and having a baby. We also discuss the associated stereotypes created….. and the affect it has on work. We also chat about life after pregnancy, the things that people don't talk about, as well as the things that people don't tell you. Hair loss, bleeding and much more of that glamorous stuff!! It's real it's raw and Caz is not slowing down. A total power mum who is embracing every moment of life with Isabella in tow. Today on Monday Mile we are joined by a man who recently brought the feel good back to Saturday night television. He's known best as an Arsenal Icon. However more recently his time on Strictly Come Dancing. He's overcome Alcoholism, battled addiction and is now a positive advocate for living life sober. We discuss the "illness" the brutality and loneliness that those who become a victim of Alcoholism face, and Tony shares the importance of speaking OUT, finding acceptance and taking that first step in admitting it to himself "I was 29 and I didn't want to be here, somewhere in the pits of my stomach I went help". We tap into the process of sharing that with his family, the importance of being open, and how his negative has actually become a positive for his Children, through speaking, and reflecting on his past times, it's acted as a catalyst for them to be aware of issues that Alcohol can cause. Although his traits with addiction have caused trauma, we also tap into how he utilised his addictive traits with perfectionism, and how that made him the player he was. "If you've got that inside of you, use it". Today on Monday Mile we head to Holland Park for a stroll with a lady who has been a pioneer in the Pitlane, becoming the first woman to take on the main anchor role in F1 on British TV - it is Lee McKenzie! She's worked across some of the most prestigious events in sport, Olympics , Paralympics , Wimbledon and the Rugby World Cup . She's the consummate professional, one of the greats and delivers when it really counts even under pressure and streaming live into our living rooms. We have a great conversation about what makes a good broadcaster. We discuss whether journalism really deserves the paraphrase "dirty word" and as to whether broadcasters are out there to “nail someone to the masts”. We also chat about how F1 is considered to be an elite profession, and how the athlete's attitudes towards the sport has influenced Lee's professionalism towards her job as a broadcaster - "success and failure is measured by a thousandth of a second" . We discuss her relationship with the outdoors and the balance it brings, and how she juggles life on the road, broadcasting across multisport events and adapting to different time zones and prepping for one event whilst she's still mid-broadcast at another. We also talk about the importance of being “good” at the job, and not focusing on what other people might think, and whether it's true if you put everything into something it leaves no room for criticism. However, Lee does open up about trolling and the effects that can have on her relationship with body image. It's a great listen, and as someone who is a role model to me, I really enjoyed this walk and talk with Lee. Today we walk a mile with Paul Olima. He is probably one of the strongest men I know, a natural athlete, a former International rugby player and now a video creator …. most known for his hilarious skits that go viral on the one thing the majority of us are addicted to, Instagram. He lights up a room with his infectious energy and sense of humour. We took a stroll around the park in Putney, and discussed the challenges of growing up as a black man in a very white Ireland. Sport created a place of acceptance for Paul, a place that made him feel welcome and a place to channel his aggression that built up through frustration at school. With around 200 fist fights under his belt by the age of 18, we discuss his attitude towards life now, and how as a Father, he wants to see positive changes for his children growing up. Today's guest is Ollie Locke, and we are walking a mile in Chelsea. He's no stranger to the area having starred in E4's reality series Made in Chelsea for 12 years! He's been a bit of a pioneer in fronting the movement in equality, becoming the first man to come out on British television. He has lived life's journey in the public eye as an actor for many years. We delve into how REAL and RAW the reality show is and how much of it is a front. We chat about getting married to his partner Gareth on National television and this chat takes a deeper turn as we tap into his relationship with being bisexual, and how initially this was misunderstood and seen as unsafe. He's dated women and men publicly and we discuss the power of love, and falling in love with the person, that being Gareth and not the sexuality of the partner. Ollie and Gareth have been very open about their fertility journey, and how that works in Britain. We also talk about how the law hasn't changed in 35 years, and the process they are currently undergoing for their longed-for baby. We touch on the sad news of their 3rd miscarriage, but also the continuing belief that one day, Ollie and Gareth will become parents. Hello and welcome to a brand new season of the Monday Mile podcast. After a little festive break we are back with a bang to inspire you to join us, whilst we walk and talk. This is Season 6 and today we are in central London with a lady who is making an impact on our airwaves. She's a rockstar Mum to her beautiful daughter, and a Radio DJ who presents ON RADIO 1 Live Lounge as part of "Rickie, Melvin and Charlie". Yes, you've guessed, it's Charlie Hedges! Charlie kicked off 2023 for us with a set on the decks, seeing us well into the New Year and is proof of the pudding that you can be a Mum, and pave the way in the media and balance the two. We chat mood boards and manifesting a dream, how to create and chase that vision for the New Year and beyond, and to never take "no" for an answer. Instead we chat about taking that "no" and turning it into a positive. We dig into Charlie making her way into one of the most popular radio shows in the country, starting out as the tea lady at Kiss Radio as well as juggling a degree and becoming one of the youngest ever breakfast presenters this country has seen. This chat is impactful, inspiring and it's got me fired up, so I hope it does the same for you too. Happy New Year! Aimee will be probing for answers from the full spectrum of routines; the early birds who have finely tuned Monday mornings, to the late risers who struggle to get up before 11am. Today's guest is Alex Murphy, one of the Professional dancers from the very popular Dancing on Ice TV show. Alex is a bit of a super human, not only a TV personality and one of the most entertaining content Creators in the business, but she won Dancing on Ice in 2020 with Joe Swash! She is also the reigning Dutch Dancing On Ice champion. We dig into the unrelatable out of body moment when Alex tragically suffered a stroke whilst on a cruise ship, and we talk about the impact that this has had on her life. Trapped and encapsulated in her own body, Alex couldn't feel her right side, or speak. The profound positive attraction of Murphy's Law when the unimaginable happens, and the ability to see positivity in the situation is incredible. We discuss the process of coming back from that, and becoming a force for good to winning Dancing on Ice just 3 months later. Now as a freelance content Creator, I ask Alex about the importance of creating a routine and structure, a great listen for those in the Freelance business looking to instil some structure to the sporadic pattern of the working week. Aimee will be probing for answers from the full spectrum of routines; the early birds who have finely tuned Monday mornings, to the late risers who struggle to get up before 11am. Today's guest is Chris Stark, he's known for his former days at Radio 1 as a part of the Scott Mill's show, and now sits in the hot seat over at Global as Capital FM's Breakfast show co-presenter and exec producer. He also hosts That Peter Crouch Podcast, that casually had a certain Royal on the mic, Prince William. We dig into that famous Mila Kunis interview, that acted as a career catapult. You remember that right? In his words he went into "full panic mode, going violently off message". We chat his pathway into Radio 1, parenthood, and juggling the two. Chris opens up about his career, the selflessness that is required to be a good number two, working alongside the likes of Scott Mills, and now Roman Kemp. The podcast also took an unexpected turn, when it comes to the discussion of finding balance in life and Chris opened up about the current state of imbalance and struggle he is experiencing. A very relatable discussion, about the routine life gives you, if you let it. Today's guest is Max Whitlock, he is not just a Gymnast, he's a father, a husband and a role model to the next generation…….Max is the most successful gymnast in British history, with 6 Olympic medals to his name in the all round team, floor and pommel horse. This conversation is one that may come as a bit of a shock to many. As the poster boy of not just British Gymnastics but Team GB, it appeared from the outside that Max Whitlock had it all sussed. However, Max has recently opened up about his own struggles with his mental health and he has pulled down the mask about his relationship with the sport. The pressure to always out-perform his very best and the pressure to win Gold in Tokyo and nothing less, was considered a failure. Having taken a year out, we chat about the highs and lows of Olympic sport, the pressure, purpose and the importance of speaking out. From the outside, Max's decision could look like a quick fix, but in reality it's his chance to take the opportunity to put himself within a chance of achieving the impossible. We discuss life after sport, and the importance of speaking out about what that could look like, not just for him, but for any athlete. It's real, raw and it's relatable. Thank you Max Whitlock for your honesty. In this episode Daniel speaks to Ed Salisbury, Will Tucker and Jon Moy, three freeskiers and mountaineers, who have embarked on a remarkable journey to become the first people to climb and ski the tallest mountain on each of the seven continents: Kilimanjaro in Africa, Denali in Alaska, Antarctica to Indonesia, and finishing on a winter expedition on Everest. But as the trio began their adventure, the true toll of climate change became apparent and it dawned on them that they could be the last people to ski the fragile glaciers on these mountains – one of them is due to disappear next year. The focus of the project changed. In this episode, they talk about the power of realisation, how it changed how they live and the real, tangible differences that anyone can make to help. It's a story of adventure, of realisation and ultimately of hope. You can find them @thelastrideproject on Instagram and see some frankly astonishing footage at thelastrideproject.com.
Today's guest - Wade Eastwood, is not just your average guy who can fly a helicopter, he's an accomplished fixed-wing pilot. He can also add skydiver & free flier, rescue scuba diver, and black belt martial artist to his list of talents. Oh and in case I forget, he can Box, Fence, and skip an offshore yacht. This guy is a highly graded horse rider, has advanced weapons skills and he has served his country in the Armed Forces. He also holds multiple armoured car licenses and he has raced cars internationally, with a string of wins in Formula 3, prototypes and sports cars. Wade is a stunt coordinator and one of, if not the most reputable men in the industry. Do the films Mission Impossible, Jumanji and Men in Black ring a bell? Well, all the action and the stunts…. Wade is the brains behind them. We headed up to the studio, known as his second home, and walked the woods where Wade has taught the likes of Tom Cruise how to drift. We even got a sneak peak in the 'stunt department'. Aside from chatting pure action, we got into Wade's lifestyle, how he balances work and play, and his passion for supporting the next generation of stunt performers. We also had to get a little gossip on Mission Impossible 7 .... This week's Monday Mile takes us on a longer stroll in West London along the bank of the River Thames. He is best known for being a TV presenter and Podcast Host, but is more than that. Do the shows Soccer AM, and Sunday Brunch ring a bell? I have had the honour of being a guest on his show and his podcast so it was epic to flip the switch and host Tim on my podcast. It's Tim Lovejoy. We tap into how Tim has utilised his passion for self development and intrigue for learning to read his way out of depression. The different types meditation he has used and learned, one of which includes, (WALKING) and observing, so we did just that. The importance of living in the moment and how meditation can be a tool for that. His 2 self check-in alarms each day... We tapped into the importance of values, how they are learned and instilled within us. "If you value something show it attention, whether it's a friend, a partner, a cat, dog or a hobby" . We also tap into competition and fair game and his lack of empathy for "CHEATS" which comes back round to football. It's a meaty episode with some strong takeaways. Aimee will be probing for answers from the full spectrum of routines; the early birds who have finely tuned Monday mornings, to the late risers who struggle to get up before 11am. This week's Monday Mile takes us out into a slightly different environment. You might expect this mile to take us into a ballroom, but no, we are in this particular individual's other happy place. He's the definition of a Gentleman, he's a multifaceted entertainer and an all round performer, a singer, an author and is most well known for his performances on the dance floor. However this particular individual now sits on the exclusive judging panel every Saturday night on one of our most well loved shows - yes you've guessed - it's Strictly Come Dancing, Anton Du Beke. We go for a round of Golf at the world famous Wentworth Course in Surrey. During our walk, we discuss Anton's passion for Golf outside of the ballroom as well as his NTA nomination this week, and what it would mean to him to win. We tap into the brutality of being knocked out of the competition on Strictly, as someone with a depth of knowledge and experience having had a professional career as a Ballroom and Latin dancer, and 18 years of performing on the show. Now on the other side as a judge, Anton gives us an insight into his empathy and understanding of what's going on and how he applies his critique. Anton also leaves us with some really strong takeaways which can be applied to everyday life, the importance of showing up and being ready when an opportunity presents, and his motto “The one thing you must bring to everything, is your best”. Now this one's a bit different. This is ME on Monday Mile. Thank you Mr Will Buxton for hosting me on my own podcast. Your kind words and enthusiasm for life make this episode very special. “I'll show you I'm not who you think I am, it's very easy to stereotype”. We discuss how your average girl next door fulfilled the unimaginable, looking back to my 16 year old self I often ask myself "how did I even make it happen?" 2 Olympics, X Games and a career that was once a distant dream is now something I look back on and call the Degree of my life. In this episode we discuss Fear of committing to the Olympic goal, writing a book, Fear Less Live More and the passion and growth I have for learning on this new path. I am 100 percent living out my second dream and I feel lucky I can say that and share this journey with you all. Enjoy this very special episode brought to you by Mr Buxton. This time it's a role reversal and Will Buxton takes host seat in this one off episode. He will be probing Aimee for her answers. On routine, mindset, and motivation, even when it's at rock bottom how does she get up and continue to strive. Does she switch off? and her relationship with Monday and early mornings. This week on the Monday Mile podcast, I head to North West London to link up with Oti Mabuse. It's fair to say she is one of the most determined and hard working humans I have ever had the pleasure of speaking to. She shares her outlook on progression, “What is the alternative, do I stay in this situation? I have the capability to change it, but if I don't, what is the alternative?”. We chat about the importance of preserving her passion for dance, the music that feeds her soul, and Oti even sang us a few lines of her favourite tune to wake up to! We learn about her unusual breakfast set up, yes we are talking mixing cereals in a bowl, love that…. and how competition brings out the best innovation. What I loved about chatting to Oti is her her passion for learning, whether it's a new style in dance, or taking a new path on her journey within broadcast. She's ambitious, she's got drive, it fired me up and I know it will you too. And yeah, she's also a 2x Strictly Come Dancing champion, a TV presenter, Podcaster, and Judge on Dancing on Ice. A while back, we started working on Jon Moy's podcast. The premise was simple...Just go off, King. I have learned so much from Moy over the years, from his reading lists, unintentional history lessons, and thought-provoking perspective on life. Consider me the president of the Moy fan club. We're still working on Moy's show but wanted to share with you some of the mad rants that are happening behind the walls. Follow Jon Moy on Instagram**Listen to the entire episode on Blamo! Extra
Hosts Noah Thomas and Jian DeLeon are joined by the B.STROY guys, Brick Owens and Duey Catorze. Not sure if those are their real names, but they sound cool so we'll allow it. This week's quick hits are sneaker-heavy, starting with the missed opportunities known as the latest Nike SB x Supreme collabs. We of course plug our latest New Balance 577 kicks (sorry they're sold out), and discuss why Skepta's Nike Shox sneakers are some of the best footwear to release ever since humans discovered how feet work. We also touch on a recent article by contributor Jon Moy on the growing similarities between fast food and streetwear, made all the more apparent with the ruckus around the Popeye's Chicken Sandwich. Then we get to talking about the history of B.STROY, how Atlanta can improve as a city, and then address the QOTW. This week, Dropcast listeners weigh on on the question: What's the hottest sneaker collab of the year so far? There are no wrong answers (just kidding), but see who we agree with and who gets absolutely roasted on the pod.
