This week, for our series finale, I, Kelly-Anne Taylor, bring to you our Olympics special – it is an interview with the most successful British gymnast of all time – the six-time Olympic medallist, and the most successful pommel horse worker in the Games' history – it's Max Whitlock. In this episode, we reflect on his career – how he started gymnastics, his training regime during his teenage years (which hit highs of 35 hours a week – alongside school!) and competing in London in 2012. We also talk about a period of low mental health that he experienced after the Tokyo Olympics – and how having his daughter Willow, altered his approach to the sport. Plus, he talks about preparing for the Paris games and reveals why he has chosen to retire now. I hope you enjoyed our series finale with the delightful Max Whitlock. I have loved choosing the guests for this series, researching, writing questions, and curating these interviews for you – wonderful listener. It is a joy and privilege to be able to create this podcast – and I want to thank you for listening, for writing in, for reviewing and for taking the time to listen to these conversations. Remember, that there is a wealth of archived episodes for you to go back and enjoy – be in my conversation, from the very early days of this series, with Stephen Fry in which we talk about how TV helped him come out, or my chat with the phenomenal duo Lily Allen and Miquita Oliver – in which they discuss the perils of fame and the misogyny they've faced – or you might like to listen and laugh to my conversation with Miriam Margolyes. You can also feast on our weekly recommendations podcast – in which I, and my co-host the TV critic and RT columnist Caroline Frost, run you through everything to watch that week on telly – and, tell you what to avoid. Today's guest is Max Whitlock, he is not just a Gymnast, he's a father, a husband and a role model to the next generation…….Max is the most successful gymnast in British history, with 6 Olympic medals to his name in the all round team, floor and pommel horse. This conversation is one that may come as a bit of a shock to many. As the poster boy of not just British Gymnastics but Team GB, it appeared from the outside that Max Whitlock had it all sussed. However, Max has recently opened up about his own struggles with his mental health and he has pulled down the mask about his relationship with the sport. The pressure to always out-perform his very best and the pressure to win Gold in Tokyo and nothing less, was considered a failure.  Having taken a year out, we chat about the highs and lows of Olympic sport, the pressure, purpose and the importance of speaking out. From the outside, Max's decision could look like a quick fix, but in reality it's his chance to take the opportunity to put himself within a chance of achieving the impossible. We discuss life after sport, and the importance of speaking out about what that could look like, not just for him, but for any athlete. It's real, raw and it's relatable. Thank you Max Whitlock for your honesty. Aimee will be probing for answers from the full spectrum of routines; the early birds who have finely tuned Monday mornings, to the late risers who struggle to get up before 11am. How do elite athletes find the motivation to kick start their week come rain or shine? How do celebrities deliver no matter what the time of day? What knowledge can they pass on? Each episode drops on a Monday morning as a bitesize piece of content and weekly dose of motivation - right when you need it. Aimee will meet each of her guests for a walk and a chat and over the course of the mile she will find out how they cope on a Monday morning - their idiosyncrasies, breakfast routines, alarm noises - and how, when they need to, find the motivation to kick-on through the week. Sharing some of Britain's greatest athletes, entrepreneurs, doctors, authors and broadcasters ' secrets on self-motivation, candid thoughts on what they struggle with and a sideways look at some of their more unusual morning habits. Getting motivated with Britain's most successful gymnast Max Whitlock. Max has a mass of major medals. In 2016 he became a double Olympic champion, winning the floor and pommel titles as well as an all-around bronze medal. Then in 2017 he became the first British gymnast to defend a world title, taking pommel gold with a near faultless routine having won it for the first time in 2015 in Glasgow. He added a third world title at the 2019 championships, . The theme of this conversation is motivation. The reason Max has been so successful is because he found something he loves, and worked incredibly hard at it. That’s the basis of everything, but he shares a number of his other secrets in this episode. Max talks about time management and getting organised, and making tough decisions that may feel risky at the time. He speaks about taking chances and having faith all will end well, and staying present and not getting ahead of yourself. He talks about choosing how to react to adversity, coping with pressure and remembering to bank your wins. Max is a big believer in focusing on yourself, and not worrying about what others are up to, which has played a big part in Max’s longevity and sustained success.

This is Great British Bosses by Anything but Footy. We profile the women and men responsible for sport in this country - many at national governing bodies - who manage teams, staff, budgets, grass-root participation and overseeing those medal moments at Olympic, Paralympic and elite level. This episode, we're in Lilleshall and the base of British Gymnastics with Chief Executive Jane Allen. Formerly of Gymnastics Australia, Jane arrived in 2010 and oversaw the remarkable transformation of a sport that won its first men's Team medal in 100 years in London, produced a double Olympic champion in Rio in Max Whitlock and is planning for more glory at Tokyo 202. Not only is it excelling in elite sport, it now has 400,000 members across the UK, growing every year, with waiting lists at some gymnastics clubs for youngsters to take to the floor! We ask Jane about her role, her and her team's success and when she's back in Oz with a glass in her hand what she'll look back on as her biggest achievement. She also tells us in her view 'it's not a coincidence the 2022 Commonwealth Games were backed by Government and brought to Birmingham. Why wouldn’t you have something that would have the same impact as London had, when you’ve just made one of the biggest political decisions of your life in exiting Europe. I think Sport is so uniting and I’m so proud of what it does. If a Government stopped funding sport it would be a very brave one!' So it seems the future is bright for British sport and gymnastics in particular! And if there's someone who you think is a Great British Boss - and would make a good podcast - please free to get in touch on twitter @AnythingbutF and using the hashtag #GBBosses or contact us through our website www.anythingbutfooty.com See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

In this episode, John and Michael wrestle with their feelings over the current state of distance running. Eliud Kipchoge made history, running 26.2 miles in under 2 hours in Vienna - albeit under special conditions - and Brigid Kosgei broke Paula Radcliffe's 16 year old world marathon record in Chicago. But, both achievements come just days after Nike announced they were shutting the Oregon Project where distance runners have trained and won numerous medals at World and Olympic level - most notably, from a British point of view, Mo Farah. Nike's decision comes in the wake of a ban for lead coach Alberto Salazar after a lengthy investigation found him guilty of various doping offences. Salazar, backed by Nike, is appealing.Eleswhere, there has been British success this week at World Championship level in gymnastics and boxing. Max Whitlock, Joe Fraser and Lauren Price are all newly crowned world champions and look in great shape 9 months out from the next Olympic Games.Team GB has named more athletes for Tokyo too. Five canoeists have been confirmed, but a couple of big names miss out and we explain why they are not on the plane. In cycling, Laura Kenny faces a monumental challenge at the forthcoming European Championships, but it's a challenge that could significantly impact on her Olympic preparations. Plus, we have news from Judo, Hockey, Goalball and Birmingham 2022.And, in the week of mental health awareness day, we hear about a new charity - Sporting Minds UK - targeting young sportspeople struggling with mental health challenges. On this week's round up of all things Olympic & Paralympic, we ask is Tiger Woods' US Masters victory the greatest sporting comeback ever? Or, do the historical issues in his personal life detract from his achievement on the fairways and greens at Augusta National? And, can Tiger end his career with Olympic Gold in Tokyo to add to all his major titles? It was a comeback of sorts for BBC Sport this weekend too. They were able to show the final two rounds of The Masters live - the final round on free to air television on a Sunday afternoon too. Is there a lesson for other sports and events that terrestrial television coverage is essential for their future prospects? Also, on BBC Sport this weekend were the European Gymnastics Championships with Max Whitlock winning gold and the British Skateboarding Championships in Salford with ten year old Sky Brown triumphing.Meanwhile, will BBC Athletics broadcaster Steve Cram be able to combine his role as a commentator if he is appointed the new chair of British Athletics? We debate the issues around being a sports commentator whilst also having close links with the competitors you are required to broadcast about. And, we round up another 7 days of sport at all levels with Michael talking about his experiences of being at the Duathlon event in Stockton on Tees this weekend. Is this London 2012 legacy in action? Can your home town attract major sporting events? If you worry about your efforts to deliver actionable feedback in a manner that resonates with your athletes then you are not alone. Scott Hann ran us through his work coaching double Olympic gold medal-winning gymnast Max Whitlock at the 2016 Leaders Sport Performance Summit in London. He was joined onstage by Jo Cole, the Head of Strings at the Royal Academy of Music, to compare and contrast with her approach to the music students who enter its fabled halls. The duo agreed that a student or athlete’s receptiveness to feedback hinges upon the relationship with the tutor or coach, which inevitably is a question of trust. They also felt that it is not only the student or athlete who evolves as a consequence, but the coach too, who must be aware of their charge’s ever-developing needs. Other topics on the agenda that morning included: Teaching people to know themselves intimately as a performer; The reality that performers often know there’s a problem but not what it might be; Intentional feedback; The creation of a safe learning space; Filtering feedback for positive information, not the coach’s personal taste; Previous Episode: Leaders Performance Podcast: Alex Hill Listen to the round-up above and subscribe today on iTunes, Stitcher and Overcast, or your chosen podcast platform.
