Born in New Jersey in 1952, Julia began her career as a comedian in the 1980s under the name Rick Scotti. She quickly gained popularity and became a regular performer at renowned comedy clubs such as The original Improv. In 2000, Julia decided to retire from comedy and focus on her family life. Comedian Julia Scott, aged 63, aka “the crazy old lady of comedy,” took to the stage of America's Got Talent as Simon Cowell, Howie Mandell, Heidi Klum, Mel B, and millions of viewers looked on. Her mission? To show that age has nothing to do with anything, you don't stop just because you have gray hair. She killed her set. This innocent-looking granny's routine was bawdy and hip and the audience couldn't get enough. In her words, “I got a standing ovation, all four of them voted to pass me... and I didn't have a heart attack!" Particularly taken was fellow comic Mandell who asked Julia why she started so late in life. A tearful Julia paused, and carefully replied, “For the first 28 years of my life, I was known as Rick Scotti.” The judges looked shocked as the audience applauded. Howie responded, “You know, whether you're a man or a woman…you're human. And you're funny! You are talented. And you're brave.” Brave indeed. At age 48, after doing comedy for 28 years, Julia gave everything up to live her authentic self. Julia's success on America's Got Talent and her triumphant comedy comeback are only a small part of what makes the documentary Julia Scotti: Funny That Way so powerful. The film, with classic footage, family photos, and intimate (and often heartbreaking) revelations from Julia's friends, family, and past lovers, follows this New Jersey native who, as Rick Scotti, was having a successful run in the 80s era of comedy appearing with big names that included Jerry Seinfeld and Chris Rock and winning Showtime's Funniest Person in New Jersey contest (barely losing the Showtime national to Ellen DeGeneres). On this episode of Metrosource Minis, Julia and host Alexander Rodriguez chat about coming out as trans late in life, being shunned by her family and friends, her great comeback, the evolution of comedy, and what's still on her bucket list. Julia shares all in this truly intimate and candid conversation. In only 90 seconds, Julia Scotti blew us away on America’s Got Talent. We talk about just how hard it is to be funny and make an impression in that short amount of time, auditioning for clubs in the 80s, taking a break from comedy and coming back even stronger, and of course, I make her share some horror stories from hell gigs. Pat House is a nationally-touring comedian based out of Philadelphia. A regular performer in comedy clubs, casinos, and theaters all over the country, Pat has been a choice opener for Sebastian Maniscalco, Tom Segura, and Dan Cummins. He recorded his first album Biggest Thing in 2013, and his latest album Heard Enough Yesterday, hit #1 on the iTunes comedy charts. Both can be heard on iTunes, Amazon, and Pandora.Julia is a nationally headlining comedian, former teacher, author, speaker, and woman of transgendered experience. She was a quarter-finalist and fan favorite on season 11 of America’s Got Talent on NBC in 2016. Julia currently has a comedy special on SHOWTIME called "More Women of a Certain Age". Originally from Fairview, New Jersey, for the first 48 years she was better known as comedian Rick Scotti. She toured the country, appearing at venues all over the United States and Canada, both as a headliner in comedy clubs and as an opening act for artists such as Lou Rawls, Chicago, and Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons. Julia has appeared on numerous television and radio shows as well as commercials. In 2000, Julia left comedy to begin her life-altering transition, and also to begin her new career as a teacher, where she remained for seven years. She was self-employed for a time, but in 2011, after a ten-year layoff from comedy, Julia returned to the stage. Her new brand of comedy is fierce, honest, and fearless. She has been described as a “force of nature”, “a cross between Sam Kinison and Mrs. Doubtfire”, and like a “chainsaw flying through the room”. Julia was a quarter-finalist on season 11 America’s Got Talent in 2016. She was a judge’s favorite with Simon Cowell saying “you genuinely made me laugh”, and Howie Mandel quoted as saying “you have so much to offer, you are a joy." In 2012, Julia had been named one of the Top Five Transgender Comedians in the country by Advocate Magazine. Since then, she has gone on to become the first transgendered woman and finalist in the New York Based Ladies of Laughter Competition. She has performed at the Boston Comedy Festival, and in 2014 was one of the winners of the Laughlin Laugh Festival in Nevada. Today, you can find Julia performing at comedy clubs and theaters around the country. When she isn’t making people laugh, Julia often speaks at teacher in-services on the subject of bullying and transgendered youth issues.

The film is the journey of  65-year-old transgender comedian Julia and the children she lost and found with comedy as their path to identity and healing. In the late 1990s, stand up comedian Rick Scotti was performing in comedy clubs across the country when he came to the realization that he was living a false and painful life. Rick's awakening led him down the challenging road to a new identity as Julia Scotti. The consequences of her transition left Julia deserted by her family, friends, and comedy world colleagues. The film takes us through a path of acceptance and healing, and the unique way this family uses comedy to face their truth. Today we talk to Julia and Susan about the making of the film, how to laugh and cry over the past, and the art of healing. With co-host Brody Levesque.
