We have reached the end of the road with Peter Bogdanovich. Our final Bogdanofilm is P-Bog's actual final film - and he probably didn't make any more because he got tired of the tepid critical reception to his best work. It's been quite a ride, this journey through almost every Bogdanofilm, and SHE'S FUNNY THAT WAY - a star-studded critical and financial failure - feels like a fitting conclusion to it. As mentioned during Contrarians Corner, it's difficult not to read this as P-Bog very consciously making a farewell movie. But did we like it? And is our opinion influenced by the other movies of his we've watched over the Summer?TIMELINE00:01:26 Audrey's Wisdom00:02:25 Real Talk00:57:55 The Future & Patreon Stuff- Interested in more Contrarians goodness? Peter Bogdanovich's final film, She's Funny That Way, came and went and barely anyone seemed to notice. However, it wasn't the movie he really made. What Peter actually filmed was a black and white screwball comedy called Squirrels to the Nuts. What happened is a typical story. The movie didn't test well and the studio changed the film completely, and no surprise the studio version bombed anyway. The original version? That was believed lost to history.Or so we thought. A few years later, James Kenney (possibly the world's biggest Bogdanovich fan) found the original version in tact. On eBay. This episode features James Kenney, documentarian Bill Teck, and Louise Stratten (Peter's ex-wife and Squirrels co-screenwriter) all helping to tell this story which seems to have an actual Hollywood Ending. With a Broadway career spanning over 50 years, Tovah Feldshuh takes us through her journey as she shares her life as an actress, wife, and mother. While she loves politics, it's her love of people that motivates her to fight for what she believes in and help in every way that she can. Initially determined to go to Harvard Law School to stay close to her father, her brother encouraged her to apply for the McKnight Fellowship in acting and was eventually chosen as one of the four to attend the fellowship. This trajectory change was the beginning of Tovah's pursuit of becoming an actor, which to her is "so much cheaper than therapy". Tovah talks about her role as Mrs. Brice in "Funny Girl" and bringing a level of humanity and relatability to her character, and her memoir, “Lilyville: Mother, Daughter, and Other Roles I've Played” which explores mother-daughter relationships, and her complex relationship with her mother. Married for 46 years, she shares what makes their marriage work. Tovah intends to keep acting for as long as she can, mainly motivated by her love of people and making connections. Tovah Feldshuh is an actress, singer, and playwright who's been a Broadway star for more than four decades now, which earned her Tony Award nominations and two Emmy Award nominations. She made her Broadway debut in the 1973 musical "Cyrrano". Her other stage credits include "Saravá", "Lend Me a Tenor", "Golda's Balcony", “Dreyfus in Rehearsal”, “Lend Me a Tenor”, “Golda's Balcony”, "Irena's Vow", "Pippin", and "Yentl". She made her cabaret debut with her act, "Tovah: Crossovah! From Broadway to Cabaret", followed by "Tovah: Out of Her Mind!" and was selected as Best Cabaret Artist of 2000 by the Boston Globe. Tovah has also appeared in numerous tv shows, including "Ryan's Hope", "Holocaust", "Mariah", "As the World Turns", "Law & Order", "Flesh and Bone", "The Walking Dead", "Crazy Ex-Girlfriend", and "Star Wars Resistance". Her film credits include "Kissing Jessica Stein", "Just My Luck", "She's Funny That Way", and "Armageddon Time". Tovah is currently playing Mrs. Brice in the Broadway revival of "Funny Girl", and is the author of the memoir, “Lilyville: Mother, Daughter, and Other Roles I've Played”. It's about the least likely event you'd expect to have in an old WWII airbase -- a queer comedy festival. But this year, the We're Funny That Way festival will take to the stage at Picton's Base31 to bring laughter, and raise awareness and money for a good cause. A wave of grief and support continues to pour in for the six young people killed in a car crash last weekend in Barrie. On Saturday, the community will gather for a vigil to honor the victims and their families. An organizer shared what's being planned and how the tragic event has shaped the community nearly one week later. August has come and gone, but the turn of the calendar has made way for a new season to begin here in Ontario... fall fair season. After a long hiatus, the Perth Fair is back in full swing this weekend.

Premiering at the Venice Festival in 2014, She's Funny That Way was the final narrative feature from the late Peter Bogdanovich. Starring Owen Wilson, Imogen Poots, Kathryn Hahn, Will Forte, Rhys Ifans and Jennifer Aniston, the film was a screwball comedy which, while enjoyable, never truly felt like a cohesive vision from the master writer-director. And that's because it wasn't. Originally filmed as Squirrels To The Nuts Bogdanovich's vision was compromised during post-production and after he finished his edit, he conducted reshoots and removed a lot of the film's multi-strand plot . It was believed that the director's original cut was lost all together - and that's where James Kenney comes in. A life-long fan of Peter Bogdanovich, Kenney is a teacher and film writer at Tremble Sigh Wonder with an eye for collecting scripts and other film materials. One evening he was trawling through eBay when he noticed a HD tape for sale, titled Squirrels To The Nuts. The label on the tape stated a running time much longer than that of the final film - and It transpired that Kenney had discovered what is likely the only remaining copy of Bogdanovich's true vision. Ultimately Kenney ended-up connecting with Bogdanovich, who began working to get his version of Squirrels To The Nuts released. Sadly, Bogdanovich died in January 2022, before he could achieve this, but now Squirrels To The Nuts is getting a limited run at New York's Museum Of Modern Art (MoMA) and it looks like the film will also get a full release at a later date. James Kenney joined the Movies In Focus podcast to talk about discovering the director's cut of Squirrels To The Nutsand how he worked with Peter Bogdanovich to get the film released. We also discussed Bogdanovich's career and a host of other film related topics in this podcast episode.
Welcome to The B-Side, from The Film Stage. Here we talk about movie directors! Not the movies that made them famous or kept them famous, but the ones that they made in between. This is the third episode of what we are calling The Final Frame. Here we will dissect the final film of a great, well-respected filmmaker, wrapped in the context of said filmmaker's entire career. Our subject today: the recently departed Peter Bogdanovich. His final film: She's Funny That Way, starring Owen Wilson, Imogen Poots, Kathryn Hahn, Rhys Ifans, Jennifer Aniston, Will Forte, Austin Pendleton, George Morfogen, Richard Lewis, and Cybill Shepherd. But wait! That's only half-true! Before the half-hearted release of She's Funny That Way, there was another version of the film. Its title? Squirrels to the Nuts. This is the cut that Bogdanovich wanted the world to see. Until the studio made him change it. And our guest, James Kenney, is the man who saved Squirrels to the Nuts. He recounts the tale in a great piece on his wonderful website. We discuss Bogdanovich's entire filmography. How he broke in under the umbrella of Roger Corman; his impossible three-film run of The Last Picture Show, What's Up Doc?, and Paper Moon; the professional downfall that preceded a tragic personal downfall; his pseudo-comeback with Mask, quickly followed by a career making movies for TV. And then, after all of that, The Cat's Meow, a Tom Petty documentary, and this complicated final film. Kenney speaks eloquently about Bogdanovich's gentle aesthetic, and we marvel at Squirrels being his first self-generated work since They All Laughed. There's much time spent discussing the marked differences between the two versions, and not nearly enough time marveling at the performance Bogdanovich got out of Cher in Mask. The same goes for Kenney's defense of the much-maligned Illegally Yours! Be sure to give us a follow on Twitter and Facebook at @TFSBSide. While the impetus for Bogdanovich's movie-making career began with Roger Corman, the genesis of his directorial ambitions came earlier, as an actor studying under the tutelage of Stella Adler and her prestigious New York studio for the Method. Bogdanovich gathered a troupe of his fellow students and directed them in a scene from Clifford Odets' The Big Knife, which went so successfully that it prompted him to secure the rights to the show so they could mount a complete production. It was, perhaps, inevitable, then, that at some point in his career, Bogdanovich would find himself drawn back to the stage. But where other directors used Broadway as an escape route from the movies, Bogdanovich would use the recent success of Michael Frayn's bedroom farce Noises Off as a kind of kindling for the reignition of his creative hearth. Bogdanovich retained universally warm impressions of the film for the rest of his career, both the making of and the end result. Despite delivering another lead weight to the theaters, nothing appears to have soured the director's feelings about Noises Off. It's likely that it wasn't indifference, but expectation for Bogdanovich at this point. He'd been double-crossed or unsupported by studios pretty consistently since he first fell from the height of his powers. Almost 20 years later, he appears content to have filled the role of a director for hire, making plenty of movies but never a profit. The next script to land on his desk was a romantic drama about country music songwriters. On the surface, The Thing Called Love appears to share the least DNA with all the director's other films, but Bogdanovich fostered an affection for country music beginning with his time on Last Picture Show, eventually culminating in a handful of songwriting credits of his own. The film had a youthful spirit to it not seen since Picture Show, drawing from the energetic talents of its adolescent performers. Tragedy would, however, continue to plague Bogdanovich's films, as, for the second time in his career, a sudden death would torpedo his film's box office prospects. The Thing Called Love was the last completed performance by the promising young River Phoenix before he tragically died from a drug overdose on October 30th, 1993. Once again, the studio was reluctant to release the film, and critics couldn't focus on anything beyond the pall of death hanging over the film. It would be another 8 years before Bogdanovich returned to the theaters. The familiar comfort of Old Hollywood and its outsized legends provided Bogdanovich the necessary inspiration for his theatrical comeback. The story drew from a perennial rumor once told to him by Orson Welles; a story concerning William Randolph Hearst and his mistress, the youthful actress Marion Davies. This was not the same tale which lent its inspiration to the pages of Citizen Kane. This was a tale of jealousy, indulgence, and murder. A tale which traveled along the lips of every Los Angeles gossipist for close to a century, and was now resting in Bogdanovich's hands in the form of a stage play titled The Cat's Meow. As was the case with Nickelodeon, the studio shot down Bogdanovich's proposal to shoot this silent-era period piece in black-and-white, but he worked around it by employing the same costuming and set design techniques implemented for At Long Last Love, achieving the desired feeling while still shooting in color. The film was completed in an economical 31 days, on a relatively modest budget. The Cat's Meow was set to be a contender for Bogdanovich, so you know the studio just had to leave him holding the bag yet again. The Cat's Meow made it to only a handful of screens when it was released, grossed less than half its cost, and saw zero awards prospects for either its luminous director or its superlative cast. Bogdanovich's films would not return to the cinema for more than a decade. His last theatrical feature was effectively propped up by the backing of several prominent indie directors who looked to the elder statesman as their treasured forebear. “I let them call me Pops,” Bogdanovich would say, “and I call them my kids.” These same contemporary filmmakers, who earlier championed Bogdanovich's buried works, were now working to help him realize one final project, which had been gestating for the last 15 years. Squirrels to the Nuts, as it was originally called, was first drafted in the mid ‘90s, after Bogdanovich filed for bankruptcy a second time, as an exercise in escapism between himself and his second wife, Louise Stratten (the late Dorothy's younger sister). It was another screwball romance from the director, penned with the same personal affection and character as his previous romps, intended as a starring vehicle for his wife and cinematic avatar, John Ritter. Ritter's premature passing in 2003 put the project in limbo, however, and it wasn't until Wes Anderson introduced Bogdanovich to his thespian analogue Owen Wilson that the now septuagenarian filmmaker felt he could bring his script to fruition. She's Funny That Way, as the film was ultimately titled, had all the bells and whistles of a Bogdanovich film, but wore a coat of contemporary colors, creating some odd dissonance which struck critics and audiences at the time. Here was Bogdanovich making yet another screwball throwback, littered with the most explicit Old Hollywood references he'd ever displayed, with a cast of characters that couldn't seem farther away from that glitzy nostalgia so often peppered across his films. The whole thing appeared a bit thrown together, as if it was a quick little project assembled by a few friends over a handful of weekends together. And you know what, it kind of was. She's Funny That Way was shot on a similarly expedient schedule as The Cat's Meow, on a modest budget largely supplied thanks to the confidence bestowed by executive producers Wes Anderson and Noah Boumbach. It didn't perform exceptionally well and didn't make back its cost, but it got Bogdanovich back in the directing chair, and saw the realization of one last personal story for the erstwhile legend. Bogdanovich's “boys” gave to him what he struggled to supply his mentor with for so many years: the financial opportunity to complete the visions studios never had the faith to pursue. Bogdanovich would eventually pay back the favor by fulfilling a promise he made to Orson Welles some many years before. In 2018, thanks to decades of dedication and wrangling from his former protégé, preservationist, and devoted friend, Welles' final film, The Other Side of the Wind, was completed and released to the world. “If anything ever happens to me I want you to promise me you'll finish the picture.” It took more than 30 years after Welles died for Bogdanovich to fulfill that promise, and even though it was not his own creative spirit behind the wheel, the culmination of The Other Side of the Wind proved to be one of the most significant and crowning achievements of the intrepid movie maverick's collective career. Bogdanovich passed away on January 6th, 2022, due to complications from Parkison's disease, at the age of 82. He died an older man than all his idols – Hawks, Hitchcock, Ford, and Welles – leaving behind a legacy as rich and illustrious as those luminaries, with the added feather of preserving their stature tucked in his cap. His life was as active and infectious as his movies, with greater drama than all of Hollywood could muster. With his passing, the few remaining ties to the Hollywood of old have ceased. But through all his work, both on and off the screen, those legends continue to live on. And by revitalizing their stories for a new generation, Bogdanovich secured the traditions he loved while inspiring new filmmakers to follow in his stead, signaling a true Change of the Guard from the masters of old to the artists of today.

Our favorite comedian is back on the show with us, and this time.... she is a movie! Julia Scotti and director, Golden Globe nominee, Susan Sandler take the mics to tell us about their new documentary Julia Scotti: Funny That Way. The film is the journey of 65-year-old transgender comedian Julia and the children she lost and found with comedy as their path to identity and healing. In the late 1990s, stand up comedian Rick Scotti was performing in comedy clubs across the country when he came to the realization that he was living a false and painful life. Rick's awakening led him down the challenging road to a new identity as Julia Scotti. The consequences of her transition left Julia deserted by her family, friends, and comedy world colleagues. The film takes us through a path of acceptance and healing, and the unique way this family uses comedy to face their truth. Today we talk to Julia and Susan about the making of the film, how to laugh and cry over the past, and the art of healing. With co-host Brody Levesque.

Go to the bathroom before this stop on the #JenJourney, because you cannot miss a single second without missing something. Jennifer Aniston plays a pretty hilarious (though questionable?) therapist who lands in a tangled story web amongst stars like Owen Wilson and Kathryn Hahn in the film She’s Funny That Way. If the “they don’t know that we know that they know” Friends episode were a movie, this would be it.

Writer/performer Christopher Green illuminates the links between Dylan and female singers such as Indigo Girls, Marlene Dietrich, Marianne Faithfull, Kacey Musgraves and Emmylou Harris. A shape-shifting performer himself, Christopher temporarily gave up on Dylan when he heard Tracey Thorn berate him in her song Me and Bobby D, thinking: “he’s the voice of the Patriarchy and he can’t even sing”. In this episode, we grapple with some controversial questions: should we overlook an artist’s biography when considering their work? Does Bob sing with deep emotion? (His most recent recording He’s Funny That Way gets a look-in.) And we receive our most unusual piece of advice: “when you’re at an orgy with a friend, don’t look at their face”. Join us as we discover Christopher’s “secret relationship” with Bob Dylan. Christopher Green is a writer and performer whose work includes comedy, cabaret, theatre and live art. He is best known for his work as a character comedian, in a range of personas, playing at venues such as The Royal Albert Hall and Sydney Opera House. Performing as one of his characters, Tina C, Green has presented his own BBC TV and radio shows.
