From his first viewing at the Angelika as a freshman at NYU, Joan Micklin Silver's 1988 rom-com Crossing Delancey blew Michael Showalter's mind. In this episode Michael shares how and why the movie made a lasting mark and how it continues to influence his work today. Adapted by Susan Sandler from her play of the same title, this is the story of Izzy Grossman (Amy Irving), a nice Jewish girl with roots in Manhattan's Lower East Side but now living uptown with literary-adjacent aspirations. Sam Posner (Peter Reigart) is a purveyor of pickles, with a shop down the street from Izzy's grandmother's apartment. We learn how the film's spot-on portrayal of 1980s city living with characters who exist in coffee shops and bars and bookstores, and apartments, resonated with the life 18-year-old Michael imagined for himself. As he unpacks what makes this a rom-com classic, co-hosts Cooper and Tabitha spark a debate around the off-screen future for Sam and Izzy, and where they might be today. Hosted on Acast. “Alicia Maree Malone is a Film Reporter, TV Host, Producer, Writer, Editor, and all around film geek. She developed her taste for film at a young age, spending many a heady Friday night pajama-clad at the video store, picking out her 7 films for 7 days for $7. Bargain! While at school she created a Film Club, electing herself President. Eventually the School Principal asked her not to get up in assembly to talk about movies anymore. The day after graduating high school, Alicia moved to Sydney and got a job at a video store, where she took to advising customers of the correct movie choices, whether it was asked for or not. Soon, she scored a position at the TV station Channel Seven, where she stayed for 6 years in a variety of production roles. After responding to an ad for a job at cable TV station Movie Network Channels, Alicia took up a role as host, producer and editor. There she created and fronted several movie-related shows, including Movie Juice and Premiere, and hosted live red carpet events for the AFI Awards and Tropfest Short Film Festival. Alicia was also seen weekly on the national breakfast show The Morning Show as their movie expert, was heard talking about films on radio station Triple M, and her written reviews were published in Filmink Magazine. In late 2010 Alicia quit everything, packed two suitcases and moved to Hollywood to chase her dreams in the film capital of the world….” Bio continued on https://www.imdb.com/name/nm4435291/bio You can find Alicia's Amazon page here to shop her books: https://www.amazon.com/stores/author/B001K83468 WHO ARE WE? This week best-selling author Steve Phillips opens up about the very recent loss of his remarkable wife Susan Sandler and their shared goals on how to move America toward a multi-racial democracy. In the dedication to her of his new book, How We Win the Civil War, Steve writes, “The reality of cancer forces one to a more spirtual place of contemplating life, meaning, and legacy. That reflection has fueled my work on this book to try to make it a lasting legacy for both of us.” Steve notes that the post 2020 election coup “was not the first time a large percentage of American people chose whiteness over democracy in the wake of an election whose outcome they did not like.” He uses humor when he writes about the urgency of facing America's anti-democratic drift. “Imagine if Revere had instead ambled down the street saying, ‘We're going to invite the British to dinner and see if we can reach a bipartisan agreement. Sinema and Manchin are bringing the clam chowder.'” Steve Phillips is a New York Times bestselling author of How Brown Is the New White: How the Demographic Revolution Has Created a New American Majority and political expert. He is the host of "Democracy in Color with Steve Phillips," a color-conscious political podcast, and founder of Democracy in Color, a multimedia platform on race and politics. One big takeaway of the 2020 election is that America's electoral map is changing. Democrats are becoming more competitive in the South and Southwest even as they work harder to secure wins in the Midwest. The victories in those two states were no great surprise to Steve Phillips, a political donor, and author who has spent years talking about how to mobilize new voters of color and win more elections. With his wife Susan Sandler, Phillips invests in grassroots work through the Susan Sandler Fund, a philanthropy the couple created last year. Phillips is the host of “Democracy in Color with Steve Phillips,” a color-conscious podcast on politics, and also the founder of Democracy in Color, a political media organization. His new book, How to “Win the Civil War,” will be published this fall. Host David Callahan spoke with Phillips on what the Democratic party and its donors need to do to build a new American majority. Inside Change is produced by David Callahan and Kayan Tara.

Our favorite comedian is back on the show with us, and this time.... she is a movie! Julia Scotti and director, Golden Globe nominee, Susan Sandler take the mics to tell us about their new documentary Julia Scotti: Funny That Way. The film is the journey of 65-year-old transgender comedian Julia and the children she lost and found with comedy as their path to identity and healing. In the late 1990s, stand up comedian Rick Scotti was performing in comedy clubs across the country when he came to the realization that he was living a false and painful life. Rick's awakening led him down the challenging road to a new identity as Julia Scotti. The consequences of her transition left Julia deserted by her family, friends, and comedy world colleagues. The film takes us through a path of acceptance and healing, and the unique way this family uses comedy to face their truth. Today we talk to Julia and Susan about the making of the film, how to laugh and cry over the past, and the art of healing. With co-host Brody Levesque.

You've had a tremendous loss in your personal life and your friends don't know what to say or do: Do you tell them what you need, or do you assume they should know? Here's the more important question---Do any of us know what to say and do in every situation? Probably not. And the truth is, not everybody wants the same thing when they're grieving or struggling. What worked for one friend might not work for another. What's helpful to you, might not work for your friend. This episode is a particularly special one because it came from an unexpected, beautiful letter from a listener--national bestselling author, Steve Phillips. Steve wrote to me expressing his gratitude for episodes that helped him reframe his thoughts on friendship after the devastating loss of his wife of 32 years, Susan Sandler, who died of brain cancer in December 2022 after living with the disease for six years.Steve wasn't pitching the show in that letter, but I asked him if he'd honor me by sharing his experiences with friendship. And he said yes! It was a really good conversation about various topics having to do with showing up, rebuilding your social life, making plans, "real friends" vs "deal friends" and more.Links Steve mentioned in the episode:Episode #50: "Overlooking Friends' Foibles" (with my mom!)Episode #86: "Every Friendship Begins With an Act of Bravery"Meet Steve PhillipsSteve Phillips is a bestselling author, national political commentator and columnist with an extensive history at the forefront of the intersection of racial equity. He is a New York Times bestselling author, a columnist for The Guardian and The Nation, and an opinion contributor to The New York Times. He is also the host of “Democracy in Color with Steve Phillips,” a color-conscious podcast on politics. Together with his wife, the late Susan Sandler, Steve c0-founded the Sandler Phillips Center, which supports organizations and campaigns led by people of color, women, immigrants, and LGBTQIA plus people, and hosts the Fannie Lou Hamer Fellowships for courageous activists.LET'S CONNECT ON ALL THINGS FRIENDSHIP:My Substack newsletter about friendship & moreInstagram , TikTok, Twitter, Youtube, Threads, BlueskyJOIN the Dear Nina Facebook group Advertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brands
