Martin Justesen is a published chess author from Denmark. Martin's books are aimed for adult improvers like him, across all levels. He recently adapted Jose Raul Capablanca's classic "Chess Fundamentals" into algebraic notation so that newer players would be able to tap into his vast knowledge. He's also written books on blindfold endgame calculation, "headachingly hard" mate-in-two puzzles, and even an opening journal for recording OTB ideas in openings. Because Martin is Danish, we also talked a bit about Danish chess and this episode has made me really hyped to try out OTB chess in Denmark. Welcome to another Adult Improver Edition of Perpetual Chess. My guest is Martin Justesen, who is a 34 year, Denmark-based father of 3. He works as an archivist in the Library of the Danish Parliament, but devotes a lot of his free time to chess improvement and chess-related projects. His efforts have paid off, as Martin has gained a few hundred points in the past years. Prior to the pandemic, Martin had ended a long plateau, as his Danish rating went from 1600 to 1820. During the covid shutdown, he has seen continued improvement, his Lichess classical rating is now up to 2200! In our interview, Martin reveals what he thinks to be the key contributors to his improvement success. Martin is also a blogger,  and has recently released a great new book called, Blindfold Endgame Visualization: 50 Chess Positions. We also discuss how Martin decided to take on this project and why we think that it’s an important study tool. Garfield just four months into his term, ending this noble leader's plans for carrying out Abraham Lincoln's legacy of equality for formerly enslaved Americans. But how did he get into the big chair? Our time machine heads into the hurly burley of the 1880 election, the only time two Civil War veterans faced off across the Mason-Dixon line of politics. It's the ultimate winner, James A. Garfield of Ohio, who we meet in the book The Last Lincoln Republican: The Presidential Election of 1880. Justesen is the author of the Pulitzer-Prize-nominated biography, George Henry White: An Even Chance in the Race for Life.Ben holds undergraduate degrees in English Literature and Journalism, graduate degrees in journalism, technical writing and political science, and a Ph.D. in Interdisciplinary Studies. His career has included stints as a newspaper reporter and a Foreign Service Officer for the U.S. Department of State. Today, Ben enjoys a career as a writer and editor.While in journalism school, Ben discovered and began to research the career of Congressman, George Henry White, the last African-American to represent North Carolina in the U.S. Congress in the nineteenth century.Ben also wrote the script for a 2012 documentary about George Henry White, American Phoenix. Mette Sandbye is Professor of Photography Studies and Head of the Department of Arts and Cultural Studies at the University of Copenhagen. She is art critic at the weekly newspaper Weekendavisen and has published several books, most recently - Digital Snaps: The New Face of Photography (2014), edited with Jonas Larsen. Kirsten Justesen is a visual artist based in Copenhagen. She graduated from the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in 1975 with a degree in classical sculpture, yet always pushed beyond the conventional idea of sculpture as a static and permanent form. She is known for her feminist performances and sculptures that center on her nude body and address issues of gender, politics, physics, and time. Inspired by Conversations Before The End Of Time by Suzi Gablik. Conversations In Time is recorded and distributed as part of European Capital of Culture Aarhus 2017.
