Chuck Klosterman is an author of numerous books such as Sex, Drugs and Cocoa Puffs, Downtown Owl and Killing Yourself to Live. His most recent book, The Nineties, is a collection of essays about a decade that occurred not too long ago, yet in many ways feels like an entirely different world. In this episode, Chuck sits down with Aron to discuss his book and a variety of other topics, including: -What it's like to write a book about a decade that you've lived through -The internet preserving history -How Art Bell's Coast to Coast AM radio show foreshadowed the current state of mainstream media -How athletes from the past would fair in today's game and vice versa -The impact that the O.J. Simpson trial had on his legacy as a player and on the NFL's image. -Did the BCS eliminate the mystique around college football -Does American Football really need to expand beyond the United States -The essence of football -And much more Chuck's Website https://chuckklostermanauthor.com/ TFO Blog https://www.thefootballodyssey.com/ TFO Social Media Accounts https://twitter.com/FootballOdyc https://www.instagram.com/thefootballodyssey/ https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC3Kv_NInjlOAlE4lrpWu4zw/playlists
Episode 48 of Season 5 aired at 19h00 on 1 Dec 2022 on Rebel Rock Radio. It was a tricky show because of the wifi signal jumping in and out. The podcast is 100% so that is a small mercy I am thankful for. We kicked off with a double header in the form of the first two tracks on W.A.S.P's magnum opus The Crimson Idol. From there is was a bit of Southern Rock from Whiskey Myers and then over to Ireland for some Therapy? and a track called ‘Unbeliever' off the clritically acclaimed Troublegum. We stayed with the late ‘80s type guitar driven rock with Badlands and a track called 'Dancing on the Edge'. The Badlands debut album with Jake E. Lee, Ray Gillen, Eric Singer and Greg Chaisson was the first CD I ever bought and has a special place in my heart. Black Sabbath and Thin Lizzy classics ‘Killing Yourself to Live' and 'Some Day She's Going to Hit Back' were up next and then from these classics we got up to date with two albums released in the last month; Soilworks' Overgivenheten and Sakis Tolis's Among the Fires of Hell. Mötley Crüe's track ‘Motherfucker of the Year' off Saints of Los Angeles elicited some nominations from the listeners, so I will collect a few more and we can discuss that another time. The Offspring and Blink 182 hit the spot for the ‘90's kids. We spent a lot of time talking Metallica, they dropped a first track off the new album 72 Seasons this week and the 2023/24 Tour is kicking off soon. They are doing two gigs per city with different opening acts and different sets each night. I played Pantera, Five Finger Death Punch and Mammoth WVH all of who will be part of the M72 Tour. To end off we checked out the ladies, Taylor Momsen and Lzzy Hale and said farewell and RIP to Christine Mc Vie of Fleetwood Mac who passed away this week. We listened to her play and sing ‘Oh Daddy' off the multi-million selling Rumours album. SA bands were a bit thin on the ground tonight but we squoze in The Uninvited and The Burning before saying cheers and playing out with KISS and their anthem ‘ Let me Go Rock ‘n' Roll. Thanks for listening, much appreciated. Cheers until next time. Artists featured: W.A.S.P, Whiskey Myers, Therapy? Badlands, KilliT, Warrant, Black Sabbath, Thin Lizzy, Soilwork, Sakis Tolis, Whitesnake, Mötley Crüe, The Offspring, Blink 182, Candlemass, Burning Witches, Joe Bonamassa, Free, rave, Pantera, Five Finger Death Punch, Mammoth WVH, Matthew Goode Band, Godsmack, Motor Sister, Dead City Ruins, The Pretty Reckless, Halestorm, Fleetwood Mac, Kid Rock, Van Halen, Parkway Drive, Metallica, The Uninvited, the Burning, Iron Maiden, KISS. At thirty-three, comedian and educator Jake Jabbour found himself living alone after a breakup with his girlfriend and burying his grandpa. His most impactful relationships ended, stripping from him his identities as a roommate, boyfriend, and grandson. Hoping to discover who he was when he wasn't himself, Jake boarded an Amtrak train with his comedy partner to perform live improv across the country, from Los Angeles to New York, examining the trials, tragedies, and triumphs of his past that landed him alone in the most crowded cities in the country. In the lineage of Chuck Klosterman's Killing Yourself to Live and John Steinbeck's Travels with Charley, Training to Be Myself chronicles Jabbour's cross-country travels with an eye trained towards relationships and culture, searching for clues and connections with others that might shine a light on his own identity. Along the way, Jake lays bare his thoughts on grief, nostalgia, family, failure, comedy, education, relationships, culture, and self-acceptance. _______________________________________________ Produced by Maddie Gobbo, Lance Morgan, Natalie Freeman, & Michael Kowaleski. Back before corporations acquired (and systematically destroyed) rock radio by playing the same 10 songs on perpetual repeat into the dirt, radio disc jockeys used to actually have some control over their “playlists” and would sometimes throw on a song that wasn’t a normal rock radio favorite: maybe something that wasn’t a “hit single”, or something for which there was no “music video”; something longer, something unusual, something off the beaten path: we call these Deep Cuts. That’s what us Metal Nerds call “The Good Stuff”. And when it comes to Black Sabbath, it’s ALL Good Stuff!!! There’s just one problem: because WE THE NERDS here at Metal Nerdery are already so intimately familiar with what shall be henceforth known as “The First Six”, it was kind of a challenge for us to each pick our favorite 6 deep cuts from The First Six Black Sabbath albums. There were a few that overlapped on our respective listicles but we tried to go as deeply as we could to give those of you who are only familiar with side 1 of ‘Paranoid’ a nice sampling of what we call “That GOOD Sabbath”. JOIN US after you’ve finished your bowl (of breakfast cereal) as we discuss our favorite “deep cuts” from our favorite first 6 albums by our favorite First Godfathers of Metal, Black Sabbath. Digging deep into a discussion about health, business, mindset and more, Kathleen Gage invites her good friend and colleague, Pat Mussieux to share her insights on success, health and mindset. Pat is a professional speaker, business consultant, coach and author. Having built a highly successful business after leaving a 22-year marriage, Pat doesn’t pull any punches when it comes to what it takes to succeed. Pat is a woman of faith who believes God is always working in her life. Through the power of prayer and meditation, she leads a life that inspires others around the globe. Pat says, “Success is a choice we make day by day. It’s time to give up the excuses and find the reasons why you must take action.” At nearly 69, Pat not only talks the talk, she walks the walk. Living a vibrant life, running a highly successful business, exercising on a daily basis, eating healthy and keeping her eye on bigger mountains to climb, Pat shows, through example, what’s possible as we age. Common Excuses Pat will be the first to shatter common excuses people use that hold them back from the life they are capable of. She says some of the most common ones she hears are: I’m too old I’m not old enough I don’t have the money I don’t have enough money My partner won’t support me I don’t know how The way to get to the other side of the excuses is through action. Daily, consistent action. One way to be a great coach is to be coached by great coaches. During our conversation, Pat shares the process she requires potential clients to go through before she will work with them. “So bottom line, Kathleen, I'm not interested in the excuse makers anymore. That's the majority of the population. The majority are not prepared to do the work anyway. The majority have not even thought through the conversation. And they're just not aware of what's coming out of their mouth automatically.” Pat loves working with entrepreneurs who don’t rely on excuses but rather find reasons to go the distance. Taking a wholistic approach to how she works with her clients, they must be committed to physical well-being in addition to business well-being. She uses an integrated approach to what she does. According to Pat there are three things someone needs to be successful. A coach A plan Work the plan In addition, you need self-care. Self-care is more than a spa day. It’s a mindset. It’s a lifestyle. And you need to celebrate your victories. One thing Pat does with her time on the platform, during a keynote, is encourage people to ask themselves what they really want. Due to living longer than ever, the choices they make will either give them a life of misery and poor health, or happiness and health. Her most requested keynote presentation is “You’re Killing Your Business Because You’re Killing Yourself.” According to Pat, you are responsible for your happiness. You are responsible for your finances. You are responsible for your mindset. She knows that might feel burdensome and it probably is to many. And yet there is a way. You need to decide you want it. Secondly, how bad do you want it? And then thirdly, go find the resources because we are out there. To learn more about Pat and her philosophy, listen to the entire interview. You can find Pat at the following locations. http://www.hirepat.com https://www.facebook.com/Steps2Happiness https://twitter.com/PatMussieux https://www.linkedin.com/in/patmussieux/

Well thank you WATP for the constructive criticism. How can two nerds destroy us without us coming back? The whole world is just about making fun of males in their 30s. Shout out to Elliot Wilcocks, as always. Engagement party shenanigans. Killing Yourself podcast; is it legit? Buzz Balls on these hoes, and if you don't know now you know....that was Brandon "trying to prove his blackness" per WATP. Episode is not sponsored by nor has any affiliation with WATP (luckily).
No one likes to talk about suicide, but almost everyone has been affected by it. The church cannot remain silent and must empower its members to help those struggling with suicidal thoughts. Join us as we attempt to ask the questions: Why do people commit suicide? Who is most vulnerable? What does scripture say? Is suicide an automatic ticket to Hell? How can I help a friend having suicidal thoughts? What should I do if I'm having suicidal thoughts?
It's weird. Normally, the people I interview on this podcast are at the end of their career. Bill is just starting. He spent years in law school. I Wear The Black Hat (Scribner Book Company) From New York Times bestselling author, "one of America's top cultural critics" (Entertainment Weekly), and "The Ethicist" for The New York Times Magazine, comes a new book of all original pieces on villains and villainy. Chuck Klosterman has walked into the darkness. As a boy, he related to the cultural figures who represented goodness--but as an adult, he found himself unconsciously aligning with their enemies. This was not because he necessarily liked what they were doing; it was because they were doing it on purpose (and they were doing it better). They wanted to be evil. And what, exactly, was that supposed to mean? When we classify someone as a bad person, what are we really saying (and why are we so obsessed with saying it)? In I Wear the Black Hat, Klosterman questions the very nature of how modern people understand the concept of villainy. What was so Machiavellian about Machiavelli? Why don't we see Batman the same way we see Bernhard Goetz? Who's more worthy of our vitriol--Bill Clinton or Don Henley? What was O.J. Simpson's second-worst decision? And why is Klosterman still obsessed with some kid he knew for one week in 1985? Masterfully blending cultural analysis with self-interrogation and limitless imagination, I Wear the Black Hat delivers perceptive observations on the complexity of the anti-hero (seemingly the only kind of hero America still creates). I Wear the Black Hat is the rare example of serious criticism that's instantly accessible and really, really funny. Klosterman is the only writer doing whatever it is he's doing. Chuck Klosterman is the New York Times bestselling author of seven previous books, including Sex, Drugs, and Cocoa Puffs; Eating the Dinosaur; Killing Yourself to Live; and The Visible Man.
