"Few Australian bands were as big as Silverchair in the 1990s and 2000s and no Silverchair album was more important than Diorama. An evolution from the trio's earlier, grungier works, Diorama was a fascinating, meandering journey through a fantastical dreamworld conjured up by frontman-genius Daniel Johns. It's an album that meant a lot to me when it came out, and listening to it again 20 years on, I'm delighted to discover that it holds up remarkably well." - Matt Episode 10 features Abby's pick: Being Funny in a Foreign Language by The 1975. Matty Healy, the frontman of the band The 1975, is known for his quippy, observational lyrics about dating, youth culture and technology. But when it comes to his own emotions, he's typically quite guarded. On The 1975's new album “Being Funny in a Foreign Language,” he leans into his feelings and shares them with the world. Matty joins Tom Power to talk about being a band for two decades and why their new album is their most sincere yet. Plus, Maria Qamar (a.k.a. Hatecopy) makes South Asian-focused pop art that you can see everywhere, from a giant mural in Montreal to the background of a TV show like “Ms. Marvel” or “The Mindy Project.” Maria's art is blowing up in a big way as it's being showcased in prestigious art galleries like New York's Richard Taittinger Gallery and Toronto's Museum of Contemporary Art. She joins Tom to talk about her budding art career.

The British band sought to be more earnest in their exploration of love on their fifth album, Being Funny in a Foreign Language.
While the previous episode came after more than a month, this episode comes just a week later, with the G20 meetings setting the stage for a ground-breaking bilateral meeting between PM Albanese and President Xi, as well as Xi meeting with President Biden. Allan and Darren focus on those two meetings before considering whether the G20 can play a role in geopolitical issues. This past week has also been a big week for speeches, with FM Wong delivering the Whitlam Oration, and DPM Marles speaking at the Australia institute. Speeches are the bread and butter of this podcast, so Allan and Darren dive in. The podcast concludes on a (slightly) optimistic note in the wake of the US midterm elections. We thank Walter Colnaghi for research and audio editing today and bid farewell with thanks to Atikah Mekki whose time with us has come to an end. In this episode, John is back at Spitfire Audio to reunite with Matty and George of The 1975, to talk about how they wrote, recorded and produced the album ‘Being Funny in a Foreign Language'. Digging into stems, demos and the musical moments that inspired their writing, Matty and George give us a full behind-the-scenes tour of their creative process, sharing stories of very last-minute album additions and the unreleased songs that might one day be on a 1975 record. As well as tales from the studio working with producer Jack Antonoff, the pair reveal the tricks they used to create and record some of the most unique sounds and performances on the album, from constructing vast textures of only organic keyboard sounds to Googling the gear and instruments other people use. Listen to find out how simply soloing individual parts can lead to breakthrough moments when writing, the one scale you need to learn to play any 1975 song, and why Matty has now fully embraced his northern accent when singing. I hope I didn't jinx it by posting this video with one day left as 27. Gotta be extra careful not to die today, cause boy do I believe in jinxes... In this episode me and Olu talk about getting older and growing up. Not necessarily good or bad, and honestly more good than bad. On top of that we breakdown UFC 275 in Singapore. Capped by Light Heavy Weight Champ Glover Texeira with the GWOAT Valentina as the co-main. Maybe not the best PPV but def some great fights. We end the episode with some interesting questions like how do pros get better, what I know I'm going to cut out once I'm 28, and one of my big problems in life. It's weird. Normally, the people I interview on this podcast are at the end of their career. Bill is just starting. He spent years in law school. And then made up his mind (after a day of fasting) that he's going to be a comedian. I wanted to know why... "I calculated it out," he said. "I figured I can out work a lot of these guys. I cultivated this really huge love for stand-up and it imbued my life with meaning the more I sacrifice for it and the harder I pursued it." I feel this podcast is filled with lessons on commitment and confidence, but mostly, on being true to your pursuit. And really choosing yourself...
