Casual Trek - A Star Trek Recap and Ranking Podcast

SHOW NOTES: Grab your popcorn, take a sledgehammer to your 80s Pan N'Scan VHS (Disclaimer: Casual Trek endorses Physical Media, just, just not Pan N'Scan) and climb into your favourite beep-chair as Casual Trek goes to the movies In Search of Spock for Star Trek III: The Search for Spock! But, we have a little B-Feature before we hit our A-Picture and so we're also covering the other time a member of the Enterprise stole the Enterprise because the needs of the one, outweighed the needs of the many, ‘The Menagerie,' a clever way to reuse the unaired pilot of Star Trek- ‘The Cage' (See Episode 1 of this show) or a clever way to scrimp on some gold-pressed latinum for a series that was more expensive than it looked. Then, we go all in on ‘The Search for Spock,' as the Casual Trek crew won't stop raving about Christopher Lloyd's turn as a baddie. The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few, but sometimes, the needs of the few is to be rated and reviewed on all good podcatchers and apps! CONTENT WARNING: We talk about some very ableist tropes from a piece of 60s television. Episodes talked about: ‘The Menagerie' (12:22) and ‘Star Trek III: The Search for Spock,' (49:03) Miles pimps his latest appearance on ‘Breakfast in the Ruins,' Taskmaster, DragonBall, 2000ad and the Judge Dredd movies, Miles talks about Dan Dare, The Rolling Stones, Zager & Evans, our crew talk about attending our first gigs, Did Spock just kill a guy? How ‘The Cage' completely rewrites the message and meaning of ‘The Cage,' 60s ableism, Pike's gloopy make-up job, how Star Trek: Strange New Worlds has made ‘The Cage' REALLY weird, Tendii from Lower Decks would not be happy with the portrayal of Orions, Duran Duran (Wild Boys) Some of the many, many, many classic Genre Films of 1984 (and Miles didn't even mention the film adaptation of 1984 which came out that same year), oh, and also Repo Man. Despite his love of ‘Buckaroo Banzai,' you see Miles remember in real time that Christopher Lloyd also appears in that film. Casual Trek does not advocate underage drinking, but at least try for better than white wine. PAN AND SCAN IS THE DEVIL. Ponn Farr, David's death, Shatner CAN act, Utopia still needs dive bars, Bones has a Top-Five Dive Bar list, the Bones/Spock fusion, Mr. Adventure is dead now, he died in the cupboard, words Miles never thought he would ever say on this show ‘Pallette-Swapped Adric,' Kruge is a great villain, we're just going to talk about him a lot, better Magnificent Seven in Space films than ‘Rebel Moon.' James Horner, Does Spock's Return cheapen death? Miles confuses lighting with colour, What do Christopher Lloyd and Patrick Troughton have in common?

Also, warum tun Sie, was Sie tun?

Save Sharon Hospital was originally formed during the summer of 2018 when we found out that Sharon Hospital planned to close Maternity services in less than a month. We were outraged by the decision to remove this vital service from our community and upset by the lack of communication from Sharon Hospital. We hosted a rally to Save Sharon Hospital on the Sharon Town Green, with several speakers including local CT and NY selectmen, the CT State Representative, and concerned members of the community (including two women whose lives were saved because they had access to emergent obstetric surgery within a few minutes of their homes in Millerton, NY and Kent, CT). We also sent hundreds of signed letters from our community to state officials, asking them to ensure Labor and Delivery stayed open. Our hard work paid off, and Sharon Hospital announced that it would keep Labor and Delivery open indefinitely!  Later that year, HealthQuest (the NY-based company that previously owned Sharon Hospital) and Western Connecticut Health Network (WCHN), applied to the Connecticut Office of Health Strategy (OHS) to merge their two organizations. At the public hearing for this merger, several members of our community shared testimony about the importance of maintaining Sharon Hospital as a full-service hospital. We also discussed our disappointment in the lack of communication from HealthQuest to the community and our hopes that after the merger the new ownership could do better. OHS made the decision that HealthQuest and WCHN could merge (eventually becoming Nuvance Health), and took our public testimony to heart – OHS required that Sharon Hospital maintain all services including Maternity for the next five years (see Certificate of Need 18-32238-CON), and that the new managers of Sharon Hospital be more open with its communication. Then in 2020, in the face of the global pandemic, Save Sharon Hospital organized the community to support Sharon Hospital. When masks were scarce but necessary for all (especially our healthcare workers!), we started a large community mask-making operation and donated hundreds of homemade facemasks to Sharon Hospital. We organized a meal train to support staff with delicious food from local restaurants, and we organized the delivery of artwork from local grade schools, in an effort to thank all hospital staff for their hard work and dedication. Fast forward to September 2021, and once again Nuvance announced plans to close Maternity, this time in 8-12 months. However, they have yet to obtain approval from OHS, and its five-year commitment is not up until April 1, 2024. Rather than closing down our vital services, Nuvance should be using the remaining time in its five-year commitment to find sustainable solutions to maintain our hospital as a full-service operation. Since Nuvance's September 2021 announcement, we have formed a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization, Save Sharon Hospital, Inc, and hired an experienced healthcare attorney, Paul Knag from Murtha Cullina LLP - one of Connecticut's major law firms. Mr. Knag is co-chair of Murtha Cullina's Health Care Group and the past president of the Connecticut Health Lawyers Association. He is already helping us plan our legal strategy and communications with OHS, and is responding to the legal filings in connection with the ongoing CON process. In response to the letters from Save Sharon Hospital and the medical community, on February 3, 2022, OHS opened an official investigation into Nuvance's compliance at Sharon Hospital with the initial agreement made in April 2019, citing: “Information received from the community and Hospital suggests that key discrepancies persist concerning the Hospital's compliance…” and that OHS “shall have the power to administer oaths and take testimony related to the matter of the investigation.” Once again, Sharon Hospital administration is breaking its promises to our community, and we cannot let them make their proposed changes to our hospital. Thank you for joining us as we fight to maintain the vital healthcare services in our community!

Bete konkret! 4. Rechne mit Antwort! 1.

Both of these animated Short Treks were released Thursday, December 12, 2019. We aren’t separating these… We decided not to release these as separate episodes because we didn’t get a lot of feedback on them, especially The Girl Who Made the Stars. Therefore, we’re releasing them as a single episode. Fred’s Pics! Fred from The Netherlands was kind enough to collect a LOT of images for these Short Treks. Therefore, we use them to tell most of the story! First of all, we have some feedback on the last two Short Treks… We had feedback for the last two Short Treks and the episodes in which we covered them, The Trouble with Edward and Ask Not, so we start off with that. Short Treks Season 2 Episode 4 – Ephraim and Dot This one used two “characters” that were introduced on Star Trek: Discovery: The tardigrade from Season 1 (assuming it’s the same one), and the DOT-7 that we saw in the season finale of Season 2, Such Sweet Sorrow, Part 2. It’s told in a Tom & Jerry style. We didn’t really agree about this episode. Ruthie didn’t care for it at all. I loved it, but I had one major continuity problem with the Short Trek. More on that in a bit. We start with black and white images… To start, we get an old film to start with. Would they have this in the 23rd Century? In this episode, Qstorm goes rogue and suggests that Star Trek III:The Search For Spock is actually a better film than the hallowed Star Trek II: Wrath Of Khan! Plus, talk of a Wrath Of Khan PREQUEL (or would it be a Space Seed sequel)?? And Big Sexy is in rare form throughout the proceedings! We also talk about the Star Trek III soundtrack by James Horner. Featured tracks from the OST can be found below: Stealing The Enterprise goo.gl/XVZRxK From the bouncy strings at the beginning of this cut, when Kirk punches the Starfleet security guard to rescue Bones, all the way to the conclusion when the Excelsior drifts to a halt due to Scotty's sabotage, this track does NOT let up! It's a standout on the soundtrack.  Bird Of Prey Decloaks goo.gl/Wu81Uy A warrior's track! Very percussive hallmark theme for the Klingons, including unique use of horns (I'm guessing trombones). Another standout. Wrath of Khan prequel? goo.gl/Xjhjpk And don't forget to check out the RED SHIRTS here: Facebook Twitter Tumblr and email us at redshirtspodcast@gmail.com Thanks to all our supporters. Hell’s Heart. When James T. Kirk defeated Kruge on the doomed Genesis Planet, a noble Klingon house was left leaderless. With no heir apparent, the result was a power vacuum. The House of Kruge remained without a leader for a hundred years, until a bitter Klingon named Korgh sets in motion a plan to claim Kruge's house for himself. It's a tale of treachery, deceit, and dishonor a century in the making! In this episode of Literary Treks hosts Matthew Rushing, Dan Gunther and Bruce Gibson talk about Star Trek Prey: Hell’s Heart. We discuss the story inspirations, adding to Kruge, Kirk’s pain, relevant themes, Klingon exceptionalism, an illusionist, media and our ratings.
