George Takei born Hosato Takei April 20, 1937) is an American actor, author and activist known for his role as Hikaru Sulu, helmsman of the fictional starship USS Enterprise in the television series Star Trek and subsequent films.[1][2]Takei was born to Japanese American parents, with whom he lived in U.S.-run internment camps during World War II. He began pursuing acting in college, which led in 1965 to the role of Sulu, to which he returned periodically into the 1990s. Upon coming out as gay in 2005, he became a prominent proponent of LGBT rights and active in state and local politics. He has been a vocal advocate of the rights of immigrants, in part through his work on the 2012 Broadway show Allegiance, about the internment experience.[3][4]Although Takei was born and raised in California, he spoke both English and Japanese growing up and remains fluent in both languages.[5][6] He has won several awards and accolades for his work on human rights and Japan–United States relations, including his work with the Japanese American National Museum in Los Angeles, California.Tom Hanks tells Variety magazine that he has no plans to retire. "No, I don't have any desire [to retire]. I'm not working for the sake of working. I'm in a very lucky position. It's got to be fabulous. Rita and I talk about it all the time, which is there's only two reasons go to work: It'll be good or it'll be fun. And if it's neither one of those, I'll stay home until the cows come on. I don't need to do anything.” Giant Freakin Robot says Tom Hanks is allegedly in talks to play a villain in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The website says he could play Doctor Doom or a villain in the upcoming Fantastic Four movie. He could also play Mr Sinister in an upcoming X-Men movie. I said, ‘Well, no, I'm not.' He said, ‘Are you sitting? O.J. Simpson for the Terminator!' I said, ‘I actually think that's a bad idea.' It didn't go anywhere.”Hugh Jackman tells People magazine that he is going to spend the next six months training to play Wolverine in ''Deadpool 3.'' “So, we have six months from when I finish The Music Man to when I started filming. And I'm not doing any other work. I'm going to be with my family and train. That's going to be my job for six months. I'm really fit right now. There's one thing that about eight shows a week being on Broadway singing and dancing, is I'm fit. So, I'm healthy. I have a good place to start. And apologies, chickens. Run a mile. Start running now because I'm coming for you.”Hugh tells HBO that he is not taking steroids to bulk up to play Wolverine. “No, I love my job. And I love Wolverine. I have been told anecdotally what the side effects are of that. And I was like, ‘I don't love it that much.' So no, I just did it the old school way.

Saturn's axis wobbles around dramatically. Scientists hypothesize a moon of Saturn scraped the surface and created the rings. How many moons does Saturn have? 83, with two more unconfirmed. Small moons are condensing out of Saturn's rings. On a galactic timescale, Saturn is violently changing right now. Saturn's rings are theorized to only be 100 million years old. Saturn may be in an orbital resonance with Neptune, they get weird together. Jupiter has 80 rings. Devon's noticed that number keeps going up. Ben didn't totally hate Flamin' Hot Mountain Dew. Steven thought it's like whiskey without getting drunk! We talk about character generation in Travellers. Ben's character in Travellers is named Bucket "Buck" Hahn. Very well educated. The hosts reminisce about playing Fiasco, an amazing DM-less RPG. Devon's rewatching the original Quantum Leap. Is ye olde Quantum Leap now called "The Original Series?" or "The First Leap?" In TOS, was Hikaru Sulu originally an Astrobotanist or a Physicist? Answer: He was Head of the Physics Dept. They gave Pavel Chekov the Monkees haircut originally for sex appeal. Are the people making Lower Decks super horny? Towels and underwear and sex everywhere. "We got an ancient mask situation over here!" Not a new thing on Star Trek. "Bonks" are where humans used to keep their money. Devon and Steven get way into the ethics of holodecks. Ben brings the popcorn. Devon and Steven use a lot of euphemisms for sex in the episode. Post-show for our Patreon-only crew: The new Quantum Leap looks kinda basic, but we'll give it a chance. Just give us Quantum Leap with a labrador as the main character. It's weird that the weird future in original Quantum Leap was 1995! When Quantum Leapers touch each other, they discover their true selves. New Quantum Leap has a Ghostbuster AND Firefly's engineer? Sign me up. If holodecks existed, we'd just live in there forever.

In this episode Mark talks about one of his favourite films, and the eleventh film in the "Star Trek" film franchise: the 2009 film "Star Trek" directed by J.J. Abrams and written by Robert Orci and Alex Kurtzman. A reboot of the main characters of the original "Star Trek" TV series, portrayed by a new cast, the story of the film takes place in a alternate reality which was created when a Romulan mining ship, commanded by Captain Nero (played by Eric Bana) and a ship piloted by Ambassador Spock (played by Leonard Nimoy) arrived in the past after falling into a black hole - essentially changing how events would precede because of their presence, including: the death of the newly born James T. Kirk's father, George Kirk (played by Chris Hemsworth) the first officer of the USS Kelvin. As a result of the destruction of the USS Kelvin - which George Kirk had attempted to use to stop Nero's vessel, the Nerada - certain events played out differently than they they had in the original timeline that had been shown in all the previous TV series and films, and as a result certain characters ultimately met one another at different times and in different circumstances than they would have been expected to previously. Over the course of the film, we see the rapid beginnings of a friendship forged between James T. Kirk (played by Chris Pine) and Spock (played by Zachary Quinto), and the coming together of the iconic crew of the USS Enterprise, including: Nyota Uhura (played by Zoe Saldana), Hikaru Sulu (played by John Cho), Montgomery Scott (played by Simon Pegg), Doctor Leonard "Bones" McCoy (played by Karl Urban), and Pavel Chekov (played by Anton Yelchin), as they become a team and fight against the wrath of Nero who personally blames Spock and the Federation for the death of his family who were destroyed on Romulus as a result of the elder Spock being unable to save them from a supernova explosion. The soundtrack of the film was composed by Michael Giacchino. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/markthepoet/message

In Gaming news, Star Trek: Timelines launches Wolves and Wraiths! Of course, as always, before we wrap up the show, we’ll open hailing frequencies for your incoming messages Let us know on social media like Facebook, Twitter, or by visiting our website! This Weeks Community Question Is: CQ: Will you be watching “Star Trek: Discovery” on CBS? Is this your first time viewing the series? TREK IT OUT by Jake Morgan Discovery to Air on Terrestrial Television Back in 1998, a year before the introduction of TiVo, NBC ran a Summer campaign promoting their re-runs of popular television programming. The slogan - “If you haven’t seen it, it’s new to you” - seems as relevant now as it was in the VHS-recording nightmare times of 1998. Why, you ask? Because if you held out on watching “Star Trek: Discovery” due to CBS ALL ACCESS subscription costs, then you’ll have new-to-you Star Trek very very soon! On Wednesday August 26th, CBS released its revised fall line-up. The original CBS schedule featured fan-favorites including NCIS and Young Sheldon as well as newcomers like Chuck Lorre’s “B Positive” and Queen Latifa’s “The Equalizer” Reboot. Due to Covid-19 restrictions, CBS pivoted towards reality TV and previously non-broadcast programming to fill the gaps. One of those non-broadcast programs is, as we implied already, “Star Trek: Discovery”’s first season! CBS Entertainment President Kelly Kahl said of the revised line-up “This is hardly a traditional fall season, but we are prepared with a strong slate of original content while our regular scripted series begin production. Based on our current timeline, we hope to start rolling out our previously announced fall series as they become available in November.” So when will you be able to catch Discovery over-the-air? Starting Thursday September 17th, Discovery will air from 10PM to 11PM, following the popular “Big Brother” and “Love Island”. Chris Pine Is (WAS) Still Interested in a Star Trek IV Star Trek legend and Twitter connoisseur William Shatner has a history of changing his mind. He wants to play Kirk, Kirk’s story is already told. He loves his co-stars, he has problems with his co-stars. He wants to go to space...he still wants to go to space - okay that last one was a bad example, but you see where we’re going. But what about the other actor who’s played Starfleet’s youngest Captain. What about Chris Pine? We ask because this week, August 27th, the new podcast “Things are Going Great For Me With Claude Deering” launched an interview with A-lister Chris Pine. During the interview, the 40 year-old actor discussed his newest film - “Wonder Woman 1984” - partying with his mom, and of course, Star Trek. If you’re a fan of Kelvin Trek, what he had to say was heartening. Pine told Deering "I haven't heard anything. I mean, I get asked these questions all the time. I'm like the last person to find anything out. So, I've heard -- what have I heard? Tarantino is going to do one. And then, who is it? Noah Hawley was going to do something else, and then that fell through. And then he's going to do something with the Discovery, the new Alex Kurtzman-led cast. So, I really don't know. I know that Paramount is coming out of having restructured a bit and kind of a major corporate restructuring. So hopefully, when all that dust settles, something concrete will come out of it, and we'll get to work. I'd love to do it." If you’re a Kelvin fan, great news - right? Well, that brings us back to Pine’s convictions. This interview was recorded in April of this year, so if he is prone to changing his mind like his fellow-Kirk-actor...who knows where he stands today? Be sure to follow the link in our show notes to listen to the full episode of “Things are Going Great For Me”! George Takei Talks To StarTrek.com Another social-media guru straight   outta    Connie had some interesting things to say about his time on Star Trek, and whether or not he’d be interested in a return - though we shouldn't call it a comeback - he’s been here for years. George Takei, Star Trek’s own Hikaru Sulu, sat down with StarTrek.com and discussed his favorite episode of Star Trek’s Original series. Takei cited “The Naked Time”, saying ”I loved being unchained from that damn console. Episode after episode, there I am. They may have given me promotions, from the Lieutenant, to becoming the Lieutenant Commander, and then Commander, but I'm still there at that same console, saying “Aye. aye, sir, warp three!” Well, at least in that episode, I showed them that I had a life beyond just “Aye. aye, sir, warp three!” I can fence.” Takei also revealed some on-set drama regarding that episode, telling Bex April May ”Well, the fencing was an important scene, and I didn't know how to fence, either. I had to take formal fencing lessons a couple of weeks before we were to shoot that.[...] Jimmy Doohan, who played Scotty, was a very perceptive person. He heard the sound of my stamping and panting, and huffing and puffing, and walked all the way from the opposite end of the soundstage [...] Just as I'm lunging, he appears behind the flat, and I miss him, literally by inches, from his nose. He was shocked and startled, and went rushing back to the set, complaining to the Assistant Director, “George just assaulted me with his fencing foil!” For more of the interview with the ever-entertaining George Takei, including what he thought Star Trek VI should have been called and whether or not he would return as Sulu, trek out the link in our show notes! James Mackinnon on Creating - And Being - Picard’s Borg This week, Star Trek’s  “For Your Consideration” interviews continued. This time SYFY Wire spoke with a behind-the-scenes star - Dept head Prosthetics and Special Makeup Effects James MacKinnon. And as it turns out, MacKinnon is in front of the camera as well! The five-time Emmy winner - and this year’s nominee for his role as Makeup director on “Star Trek: Picard” - talked about his secret weapon - and it’s bananas  ”Yes. [Laughs] Bananas are my go-to for inside flesh. Whenever you slice somebody open, there’s fatty tissue and other layers of stuff. If you sculpt as deep as possible, and add a little bit of banana, little chunks of banana, with a little bit of [fake] blood, it makes it look like fatty tissue…. So I always have a banana in the trailer every day, just in case you need a little bit of meaty tissue...” Mackinnon also talked about his time in front of the camera, and how it affects interactions with the fans ”My assistants Richard [Redlefsen] and Alexei [Dmitriew] slipped me in during lunch, because we didn’t want production to wait. Our lunch break is 45 minutes, and this makeup usually takes an hour and a half, but we pounded through! I’m a very TNG-looking Borg, so it’s a bit of a throwback….” Bob Picardo Joins “To Meet the Faces You Meet” Finally this week, we’d like to mention that former Star Trek Doctor and all-around-great-science-ambassador Robert Picardo has landed a new role on the Kickstarter film "To Meet the Faces You Meet". From the "To Meet the Faces You Meet" kickstarter page, the synopsis states  The military thought they had created the ultimate weapon-a soldier (Friz) linked symbiotically with an artificially intelligent spaceship (MEAD: Mobile Extrasensory Autonomous Deceptor) with the ability to project illusions so real that they cannot be distinguished from reality. Together, Friz and MEAD became the most deadly fighting force the world had seen. There was one problem: An errant bit of programming instilled MEAD with a conscience and pacifist tendencies that made him and his human symbiote useless for military purposes. Scheduled for "decommission," Friz and MEAD go on the run, pursued by bounty hunters and an admiral with a personal axe to grind. Picardo will play ADMIRAL GILLETTE, the antagonist of the film. Other stars include Patton Oswalt and PATRICK WARBURTON. We’ll have a link to the kickstarter in our show notes! Star Trek Gaming News by Shane Hoover and Thomas Reynolds George Brinson This week we are joined by George Brinson: A veteran, Information Technology Manager, and Star Trek Online player. Mr.Brinson talks with the team about how Star Trek Online has influenced him; and a troubling interaction with Cryptic support. Star Trek Timelines: Wolves and Wraiths From September 3rd through 7th, Star Trek Timelines players will conclude their human-Romulan history studies in the “Restoration” Hybrid Galaxy/Skirmish Event, the last chapter in the Capitoline Wolf Mega-Event. The ranked reward is sure to satisfy any player’s vaulting ambitions: Her most Imperial Majesty, and returning 5-star crew member, Emperor Georgiou. The new 5-star RomuLannister sister Narissa heads the event crew, along with 5-star Captain Erika Hernandez, and returning 4-star Rura Penthe Reed doing his best Patrick Bateman deep cut. Timelines also begins its Haunted Heroines campaign on September 3rd, featuring 5-star Pah-wraith Keiko and 4-star Tieran Possessed Kes. Disruptor Beam has yet to release details about the four-week event’s narrative. However it’s safe to say the current theme of confronting one’s past isn’t going away soon. Star Trek Fleet Command: Scopely Names a New Chief Business Officer Scopely, the developer behind Star Trek Fleet Command, purchased FoxNext Games back in January, and that acquisition has led to a new announcement. As reported on website GameDaily.biz, Scopely have named former FoxNext president Aaron Loeb as their new Chief Business Officer. Describing his position, Loeb said his responsibility is driving Scopely’s core business of game services. Speaking to GameDaily, he said,  Somehow, rooted in our industry’s history, we came to a belief that ‘fun’ is the opposite of ‘business’ … My experiences have taught me to recognize that when done right, ‘fun’ and ‘business’ are a near total overlap.  Loeb praises Scopely’s fearless approach to creative game development.  He goes so far as singling out Star Trek Fleet Command, saying  It’s a game that was given the time and support it needed to achieve the greatness that the team knew was within their grasp. And today, it’s one of the most (if not the most) deeply engaging games on mobile.

This week on Episode 476 of Priority One --- We ‘Trek Out' Terrestrial Trek, Chris Pine's pining, Takei's Rapier wit, why James MacKinnon loves Bananas, and Bob Picardo's newest role. In Gaming news, Star Trek: Timelines launches Wolves and Wraiths! Of course, as always, before we wrap up the show, we'll open hailing frequencies for your incoming messages Let us know on social media like Facebook, Twitter, or by visiting our website! The slogan - “If you haven't seen it, it's new to you” - seems as relevant now as it was in the VHS-recording nightmare times of 1998. Why, you ask? Because if you held out on watching “Star Trek: Discovery” due to CBS ALL ACCESS subscription costs, then you'll have new-to-you Star Trek very very soon! On Wednesday August 26th, CBS released its revised fall line-up. The original CBS schedule featured fan-favorites including NCIS and Young Sheldon as well as newcomers like Chuck Lorre's “B Positive” and Queen Latifa's “The Equalizer” Reboot. Due to Covid-19 restrictions, CBS pivoted towards reality TV and previously non-broadcast programming to fill the gaps. One of those non-broadcast programs is, as we implied already, “Star Trek: Discovery”'s first season! He wants to play Kirk, Kirk's story is already told. He loves his co-stars, he has problems with his co-stars. He wants to go to space...he still wants to go to space - okay that last one was a bad example, but you see where we're going. But what about the other actor who's played Starfleet's youngest Captain. If you're a fan of Kelvin Trek, what he had to say was heartening. I'd love to do it." If you're a Kelvin fan, great news - right? Well, that brings us back to Pine's convictions. This interview was recorded in April of this year, so if he is prone to changing his mind like his fellow-Kirk-actor...who knows where he stands today? Be sure to follow the link in our show notes to listen to the full episode of “Things are Going Great For Me”! George Takei Talks To StarTrek.com Another social-media guru straight   outta    Connie had some interesting things to say about his time on Star Trek, and whether or not he'd be interested in a return - though we shouldn't call it a comeback - he's been here for years. George Takei, Star Trek's own Hikaru Sulu, sat down with StarTrek.com and discussed his favorite episode of Star Trek's Original series. This week on Episode 469 of Priority One --- We ‘Trek Out' what's coming to Comic-Con@Home, and our thoughts on the Lower Decks Trailer! In Star Trek gaming, we share with you which game developers are taking actions for a more equitable future, and we relieve several old favorites - like Star Trek: Starfleet Academy. Sir Patrick Stewart Turns 80 As far as Birthday's go, 80 is an incredible milestone -- And when you're Sir Patrick Stewart, everyone wants to recognize your achievements! On June 13th, Sir Patrick celebrated his 80th Birthday and friends, fans, and news outlets did their very best to honor the veteran actor. The Guardian, for instance, interviewed several of SirtPatStew's friends and colleagues to share some of their most memorable moments with the actor. For instance, David Tennant had this to say, "He's fit as a fiddle and so strapping! How many 80-year-olds are the lead in their own science fiction series? There's nothing of the 'old man' about him. He's very virile – I'm sure he wouldn't mind me saying that!" Sir Ian McKellen told The Guardian, "Eighty is, of course, a milestone but he has had so many remarkable achievements in his careering journey from Huddersfield, to Stratford, the West End, Hollywood, to Broadway and beyond, I'm sure there will be no silly talk about retirement." And - of course - many of his co-stars from TNG joined him for a celebration and shared a picture of them together. Fortunately, they were all wearing their masks and maintaining social distancing! Happy Birthday, Sir Patrick! https://twitter.com/berman_rick/status/1282867166321098752?s=21 Robert Sallin & a new Trek Film On July 9th, Den Of Geek's Don Kaye spoke with Robert Sallin -- producer on the 1982 film Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan. According to Kaye, during an interview about the film, Sallin hinted that he's currently in the process of developing a script for a new Star Trek Film. I don't have it completely written, but I have a lot of it written. I have a concept for another Star Trek feature that I've had discussions with Paramount about — at least on the phone. This one I guarantee you is unlike anything that has been done in Star Trek, and it will be part of the canon, but they (the studio) don't want to talk about it until they see what Noah Hawley does. -Robert Sallin via Den of Geek Comic-Con@Home w/ Star Trek The pandemic may have put a damper on most of our plans this year --- including the cancellation or rescheduling or re-imagining of convention events. San Diego Comic Con for instance, has shifted their presentations to an online format and Star Trek will be participating in several ways. Generally, the event takes place Wednesday July 22 - Sunday, July 26. However, you don't have to stay glued to your computer all three days for the Star Trek Studded events. Thursday, July 23 @ 10AM PT, The Star Trek Universe Virtual Panel will feature discussions with Executive Producers Alex Kurtzman & Heather Kadin -- Followed by a virtual table read of Star Trek Discovery's episode “Such Sweet Sorrow, Part 2” with many of the episode's featured actors. Later, Mike McMahan takes the virtual stage to discuss the new animated comedy series, “Star Trek: Lower Decks.” McMahan will be joined by several of the voice actors from the series including Tawny Newsom, Jack Quaid and more. It all wraps with a “Star Trek: Picard” panel that includes Sir Patrick Steward himself along with fan favorites like Jonathan Frakes, Jonathan Del Arco, Marina Sirtis, and Jeri Ryan -- among many of the other key actors from the series. During an Instagram Livestream, Mary Chieffo expressed enthusiasm over the prospect of returning as L'Rell in the new Pike Series: “Strange New Worlds” ---- It would be nice to see a discussion about what the world will look like in this series set in the same universe as Star Trek Discovery. Who else could reprise their roles? https://www.instagram.com/tv/CCeW1mtJLdT/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link Lower Decks - Trailer If you were up early and perusing social media on Sunday, July 12th, your feed may have been flooded with tweets about a leaked trailer for the new animated series, “Star Trek: Lower Decks.” But, before long, Star Trek's official websites and social media channels went ahead and officially released it to the masses. The 2-minute and 15 second video takes us on a wild ride aboard the USS Cerritos and provides a sneak peak of the show's overall tone. We also get a solid peak into the types of characters we'll be following like Jack Quaid's Ensign Boimler and Tawny Newsome's Ensign Mariner. https://youtu.be/V3RkBKedKWw Grant Imahara Before we move on, Captains - we need to take a moment and remember the life of Grant Imahara - who passed away suddenly on June 13th. Imahara - who is best known for his role on Mythbusters and - later, portrayed Hikaru Sulu in Star Trek: Continues. He was only 49 years old. Silence Continues We're still holding our coverage of updates from Star Trek Online but, thought it prudent to share with you a list of other game developers who have stepped up to support social justice, equality, and the Black Lives Matter Movement. Blizzard has donated to several organizations Bungie has designed items to sell with all the proceeds going towards Equal Justice Initiative Niantic (Pokemon Go) is donating $5Mil to "Black gaming and AR creators that can live on the Niantic platform" and "US nonprofit organizations that are helping local communities rebuild." EA is donating $1Million to the Equal Justice Initiative, the NAACP Legal Defense & Educational Fund, and other organizations  Ubisoft is making a $100,000 donation to the NAACP This is but a short list of game developers and companies who have taken measurable actions to support Social Justice and Equality. Gamespot has a very extensive list --- links will be in the shownotes.  Star Trek Timelines Event: “Lightbringers”  by Thomas Reynolds After last week's Flashback to Dozaria, Star Trek Timelines returns to the future...present...whatever, with “Lightbringers”. The Galaxy-type Event runs from this Thursday, July 16th, to Monday July 20th for the Romulan Star Empire, Federation, and Ferengi Traditionalist factions, with 5-star Mother L'Rell as the Ranked Reward crewmember. Event crew granting high bonuses for “Lightbringers” include last week's Ranked Reward 5-star Kamin, the new 4-star Traveler Wesley, and the returning 4-star Commander Tomalak. Other Picard and Wesley variants will grant small bonuses. Star Trek Timelines' Offer Wall Comes Tumbling Down on iOS by Thomas Reynolds https://stevivor.com/news/potential-star-trek-timelines-privacy-issue-sees-resources-shut-protest/ Well, that didn't take long. On July 10th Star Trek Timelines developer Wicked Realms announced it was removing its controversial Offer Wall feature from the iOS app indefinitely. Ostensibly this is because “due to Apple guidelines the offers that can be presented on iOS are too limited to be of interest.” Third-party developers taking issue with Apple's App Store constraints is certainly nothing new, and it's significant that the Wall's alive and well on the game's Android version. However, recent player base outcry (and fan resource website outages) protesting perceived privacy threats almost certainly influenced the decision. Wicked Realms acknowledged “ongoing concerns regarding the Offer Wall in general” and their advertising partner ironSource's business practices in particular. Star Trek: Discovery – Short Treks, Season 2 Episodes 4 & 5: Ephraim and Dot/The Girl Who Made the Stars We’re back with not just another episode of The Star Trek Discovery Podcast! No, not at all! That’s because this is episode 47!!! This time, Ruthie and I cover the fourth and fifth Short Trek of Season 2: Ephraim and Dot, which was written by Chris Silvestri & Anthony Maranville, and directed by Michael Giacchino; and The Girl Who Made the Stars, which was written by Brandon Schultz and directed by Olatunde Osunsanmi. Both of these animated Short Treks were released Thursday, December 12, 2019. We aren’t separating these… We decided not to release these as separate episodes because we didn’t get a lot of feedback on them, especially The Girl Who Made the Stars. Therefore, we’re releasing them as a single episode. Fred’s Pics! Fred from The Netherlands was kind enough to collect a LOT of images for these Short Treks. Therefore, we use them to tell most of the story! First of all, we have some feedback on the last two Short Treks… We had feedback for the last two Short Treks and the episodes in which we covered them, The Trouble with Edward and Ask Not, so we start off with that. Short Treks Season 2 Episode 4 – Ephraim and Dot This one used two “characters” that were introduced on Star Trek: Discovery: The tardigrade from Season 1 (assuming it’s the same one), and the DOT-7 that we saw in the season finale of Season 2, Such Sweet Sorrow, Part 2. It’s told in a Tom & Jerry style. We didn’t really agree about this episode. Ruthie didn’t care for it at all. I loved it, but I had one major continuity problem with the Short Trek. More on that in a bit. We start with black and white images… To start, we get an old film to start with. Would they have this in the 23rd Century? I don’t think so because that’s not even a thing today, but that’s a minor point. We begin…

Toronto Mayor John Tory donned a blue Discovery Admiral Uniform while visiting school children this year, later explaining his motivation to the just-happened-to-be-there news crew. ”This is the uniform of a Star Trek Admiral. It is really in tribute to the show Star Trek, which a lot of people of course are very familiar with through all of its generations. But also people may not know that Star Trek: Discovery, which is the present series on television, is being produced here in Toronto. CBS Interactive CEO Jim Lanzone Leaves His Post Regardless of your feelings about CBS ALL ACCESS, or Star Trek's residing on the platform, there is no denying CBS's forward-thinking approach in instituting the service. Now the man in charge of overseeing the launch of the Video-On-Demand service, CBS Interactive CEO Jim Lanzone, is bidding the company adieu. On Monday November 4th, news outlets reported the 48 year-old Lanzone, who's contract with CBS expires at the end of 2019, will leave CBS Interactive to become an executive-in-residence at Benchmark Capital. Filling the role of CEO will be former Chief Operating Officer of CBS Interactive, Marc DeBevoise. In a statement, Lanzone said ”It's been an honor to lead the CBS Interactive team for nearly nine years, and I'm thrilled that Marc will seamlessly continue the great work we've done together. Marc was one of the first executives I hired back in 2011, and he has been central to our digital transformation of CBS ever since. We've been planning this transition together since early in the year, and I know our team is in great hands going forward.” George Takei Explains Lack of LGBTQ Representation in TOS George Takei is an icon. Whether he is spouting his famous “OH, MYYY”,creating a presence on social media, raising awareness about the internment of Japanese Americans by the US government during World War II, acting as a leader for the LGBTQ community, or portraying Hikaru Sulu in Star Trek, it's clear that Mr.Takei is tireless....and he always has been. In an interview with PBS Newshour, Takei praised the original Star Trek for its bravery and diversity before recalling a conversation with Gene Roddenberry regarding the series tackling “the gay issue”. Takei said he stole a quiet moment with Roddenberry at a pool party, offering his suggestion as a liberal rather than a gay man, because he “was too closeted then”. “I said, You know, we've dealt with almost every social issue. Every civil rights, human rights issue and the gay issue is another important one. Have you ever considered addressing that? WEEKLY TOP TIP One of the most wonderful things about Star Trek Online is its ability to immerse us into the universe of Star Trek. Nothing accomplishes this more than the LCARS user interface with which we use to interact with the game. When you create a character and choose a faction you're also choosing the LCARS style for that Faction. And sometimes it may not quite fit the theme you're going for with that character, or you may just like a certain style of LCARS better. Well, you can, in fact, change the LCARS color palette. You can not only choose from the other LCARS faction palettes but also from specific races like Remans, Orions, Gorn, specific versions from TNG or Voyager, and even from classic versions of the Federation and Klingon palette. There is also an option to disable the Red Alert mode so the interface stays the theme colors when going into battle. But who would want to do that? This gives you some options when creating new characters or to spice up the experience on your trusty main character. You can find these settings in the options menu under “Basic” on PC and under “Options” then “Options” again on consoles.  Other Gaming News Does Snoop Dogg STO? And if you Star Trek Online players thought some of the images look familiar, well, you would be right. With an acting career spanning six decades, George Takei is known around the world for his founding role in the acclaimed television series “Star Trek,” in which he played Hikaru Sulu, helmsman of the Starship Enterprise. But Takei's story goes where few stories have gone before. From a childhood spent with his family wrongfully imprisoned in Japanese American internment camps during World War II to becoming one of the country's leading figures in the fight for social justice, LGBTQ rights and marriage equality, Takei remains a powerful voice on issues ranging from politics to pop culture. Mashable.com named him the no. 1 most influential person on Facebook, currently with 10.4 million likes and 2.8 million followers on Twitter. Takei hosts the AARP-produced YouTube series “Takei's Take,” and is the subject of To Be Takei, a Jennifer M. Kroot documentary on his life and career. "Takei's Take" explores the world of technology, trends, current events and pop culture. On his own YouTube channel, Takei and his husband Brad Takei bring viewers into their personal life in the heightened reality web series, “It Takeis Two.” Takei made his Broadway debut in the musical, Allegiance, inspired by his true-life experience in American internment camps. Allegiance ran in New York in 2015 and 2016 and had its Los Angeles premiere in 2018. In his new graphic memoir, They Called Us Enemy, Takei revisits his haunted childhood in American concentration camps as one of 120,000 Japanese Americans imprisoned by the U.S. government during World War II. He details the forces that shaped him—and America itself—in a tale of courage, country, loyalty and love. Come for a rare visit with an American icon about his life, his activism and his ongoing mission to ensure that, at least on Earth, very few frontiers are final. Before Tom welcomes today's guest, he shares a few thoughts about President Trump's decision this past weekend to single out Baltimore and Representative Elijah Cummings -- the Democratic Chair of the House Oversight Committee -- with a series of scornful and racist Tweets. We've included the full text of Tom's comments at the bottom of this post. As Tom notes in his commentary, ----(t)he roots of many of the problems...cities face can be found in racial inequity and intolerance. And one of the things we can do to understand and address the problem of racial intolerance is to make an effort to understand history.---- Tom's guest today has made an important contribution to that history. The Japanese American actor and activist George Takei has pursued a career that spans 60 years, including his iconic role as ----Hikaru Sulu---- in the Star Trek television series and the hit movie sequels. He has also become an influential and powerful voice for social justice, marriage equality and LGBTQ rights. Earlier this month, Mr. Takei published an illustrated memoir recounting how he and his family were incarcerated by the United State government in internment camps during the Second World War. Mr. Takei, his parents, and his two younger siblings were among 120,000 people of Japanese descent who were imprisoned during the war, and his memoir deftly illuminates the effect of the stress and hardship of that experience. Mr. Takei's new book is They Called Us Enemy, written with Justin Eisinger and Steven Scott. The art is by Harmony Becker, with letters by George Lazcano. George Takei joins us from the studios of NPR West in Culver City, California.

In Episode 18 of Annie Talks, I wanted to try something a little different. I have a segment on my YouTube channel called "My Favorites" -- and they're different things for that given month. Things like: favorite movie, favorite show, favorite podcaster, favorite YouTuber, favorite foods, etc. So, specific to the podcast audience, I thought it would be nice to have a "Favorite Podcaster" of the month. In actuality, I started listening to them toward the end of 2017. They are the go-to podcasters that I listen to on a daily basis, particularly for their content. I hope in some small way, that I could contribute to the world by influencing others to listen to the types of podcasts that I listen to. I don't know how long each of these episodes will be each and every month, but I guess we'll test the waters in this maiden voyage of a series. So this is the first of what I hope to be a monthly series simply titled "My Favorite Podcasters of the Month," and so without further adieu, here are my favorite Podcasters for the month of February. 1) So, here's a podcaster that I mentioned more recently in one of my YouTube videos. This podcaster is Frank Buckley Interviews. Frank Buckley is the KTLA 5 Morning News anchor seen Monday through Friday from 7 - 10 a.m. in Los Angeles. I think the reason I enjoy Frank Buckley Interviews so much is primarily because of the people he interviews. I mean first of all these are high profile people, celebrities, authors, athletes, etc. I mean, guess when you're a prime-time news anchor, you can have whoever you want on your podcast, right? All kidding aside, he really does have great interviews on the podcast. Recently he interviewed actor George Takei, known best for his role of Hikaru Sulu on the USS Enterprise on the original show "Star Trek." George Takei is also starring in the musical "Allegiance" at the Aratani Theater at the Japanese American Cultural and Community Center in downtown Los Angeles. I actually saw George perform in "Allegiance" right around the time it had opened in New York City, a Broadway original with then co-star Lea Salonga. It was truly an amazing performance by both actors. I remember attending the performance with my good friend Nikki, and between the two of us and the many hundreds of theater-goers, there was not a dry eye in the theater! I kid you not. Frank Buckley Interviews has awesome guests on his show that a small-time fish in a large pond like me can only dream of having on my show one day. He had Jimmy Jam, who as you know, along with co-producer Terry Lewis wrote and produced Janet Jackson's first album. In that particular podcast, Jimmy Jam talks in detail about that experience and what all transpired behind-the-scenes while working with Ms. Jackson herself. This was one of my favorite episodes on Frank Buckley Interviews. There were so many more favorites including an interview with the legendary voice of the Los Angeles Dodgers, Mr. Vin Scully himself. So, if you're like me and love to hear these deep conversations with legendary greats, or celebrities, and other high profile public figures, I recommend downloading and listening to Frank Buckley Interviews. 2) My next favorite podcast of the February is a show I first downloaded way back in October or November 2017 and didn't actually start listening more intently until this year beginning in January. First of all, this podcaster is living the dream in the beautiful, picturesque, beachfront islands of Puerto Rico! Yep, way to make me jealous man! He is the founder, creator, and host of Entrepreneurs on Fire and calls his listeners Fire Nation -- I'm talking about none other than John Lee Dumas. Entrepreneurs on Fire, also known as EonFire, is such an inspirational podcast and JLD features so many cool guests who are indeed entrepreneurs themselves who have built an empire from the ground up and oftentimes lend their expertise with tips and tricks on how to get started... --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app

The Art of Soul is about living the artist’s life and mastering the art of living as a whole human being. “The ultimate aim of the artist is to lay hold of the art of living. Be a master of living for the soul creates everything.” Bruce had a clear vision about what it took to be an artist of life: “Requirement to be an artist – purity of heart.” “The aim of art is to state in aesthetic creation the deepest psychic and personal experiences of a human being.” “An artist’s expression is his soul made apparent. Behind every motion, the music of his soul is made visible.” Bruce Lee believed that we are each artists of our own lives. We don’t have to create creative artifacts or achieve the status of an artist in society in order to be an artist. “Art is the way to the essence of human life. The aim of art is not the one-sided promotion of spirit, soul and senses, but the opening of all human capacities – thought, feeling, will – to the life rhythm of the world of nature.” This is about co-creating your life with the world and revealing your soul. Everyone has their own expression of artistic activity, whether it’s in your relationships or actually an artistic creation. This is the personality as a reflection of our soul, not our social persona we put on for show. “The artless art is the art of the soul at peace.” When you start to cultivate what makes your heart sing and you start to flow with that, that brings a sense of centeredness and peace which is fully self-generated. “All vague notions must fall before a pupil can call himself a master.” These vague notions hold you back and cause you to drift in a place of uncertainty. “The true artist has no public. He works for the sheer joy of it, with and element of playfulness, of casualness. Art reaches its greatest peak when devoid of self-consciousness. Freedom discovers man the moment he loses concern over what impression he is making or about to make.” There is true freedom in being yourself. Be as weird as you want to be. “Simplicity is the last step of art and the beginning of nature.” When we simply and honestly express our soul, we become more natural—closer to nature. Take Action: What makes your heart sing? How could you share that? How could you unfold your personality and make who you are more visible? If you’re just starting this, it doesn’t have to be the world, it can just be one trusted co-conspirator who won’t judge you who you can be honest with. #BruceLeePodcastChallenge: June 12, 2017 - June 26, 2017 A 2 week action challenge to integrate Bruce Lee’s philosophy into your daily life. One winner will be picked to be a guest on the Bruce Lee Podcast! Go to brucelee.com/podcastchallenge for more details! #AAHA Our shout-out goes to Korean American actor and musician John Cho. He’s best known in his role in the Harold and Kumar movies, and plays Hikaru Sulu in the Star Trek reboot film series. Cho is open about experiencing racism in his career in Hollywood and purposely pursues roles that break Asian stereotypes. He has said that one of his biggest frustrations is how Hollywood seeks to follow trends and acts like followers of culture rather than starting and leading social trends or artistic movements. We think you’re awesome John Cho! #BruceLeeMoment This week’s moment is from listener Thomas N.: “Long days of study were overshadowed by frantic thoughts of whether I could be approaching the task in a more efficient or intelligent way. Bruce says: "Like everyone else you want to learn the way to win, but never to accept the way to lose. To accept defeat—to learn to die—is to be liberated from it! So when tomorrow comes, you must free your ambitious mind and learn the art of dying." That was it. I had to accept the possibility of failure, stop trying to find ways to weasel myself into success, and simply do.” Share your #AAHAs, #BruceLeeMoments, and #TakeAction progress with us at hello@brucelee.com Find the full version of our show notes at BruceLee.com/podcast

In this episode we discuss one of Bruce Lee's most important philosophies—Take Action! Bruce Lee was known around the world as an action star but his philosophy about taking action goes much deeper. Philosophy was not just an intellectual exercise for Bruce, he believed in applying it in real life through continual action. It was also an emotional process that started in his heart, then energized his body to manifest ideas in the real world. It was a process of becoming more intensely himself. He encouraged his students to experience what it feels like to be fully alive and live the philosophy. “Knowing is not enough, we must apply. Willing is not enough, we must do.” #AAHA (Awesome Asians and Hapas) This week’s shoutout goes to pioneering Asian actor and activist George Takei We all know him for his most famous role as Hikaru Sulu, helmsman of the USS Enterprise in the TV series Star Trek. But George is also an ardent activist working on behalf of LGBTQ+ rights. Thank you George for being a positive role model for us all. #BruceLeeMoment (Bruce Lee’s philosophy in action IRL) We hear a story from Sydnie Wilson, one of our team members about how she researched her own discomfort and took action to create a positive shift in her life. Hikaru Sulu. Few characters in Star Trek experience actual advancement in their careers. Even fewer of them go through as many random jobs to get there as Hikaru Sulu. In this episode of Standard Orbit, Mike and Drew take a close look at Mr. Sulu, the head of astrosciences turned botanist turned helmsman turned starship captain. We talk about his many adventures on the Enterprise, how he got his own command, and how awesome of a captain he must have been. Send us your feedback! Star Trek: Excelsior. Few ships in the fleet have a name whose history can rival that of Enterprise. The Great Experiment, however, is one of them. Borrowing its name from the ship captained by Hikaru Sulu, Star Trek: Excelsior is an audio drama founded in 2007 by James Heaney that follows the adventures of the fourth starship to bear the name. Set in the Delta Quadrant, the series follows the missions of the NCC-2000-C through intricate season-spanning arcs. In this episode of Continuing Mission we're joined by James along with Mathieu Blondin of the post-production team to learn more about the Star Trek: Excelsior, its history, the challenges of production, and the upcoming episode "At Death's Door."   Send us your feedback! Star Wars VIII director Rian Johnson reviews J.J. Abrams Star Trek While J.J. Abrams is behind the camera of Star Wars Episode VII, he will not be directing the eighth installment of the franchise. That honor goes to Rian Johnson, who will also be calling the shots on Episode IX. So it's looking like the new Star Wars trilogy might be more of a "Johnson Joint" than an Abrams one. Back in May 2009, Johnson guested on the /Filmcast to review J.J.'s first Star Trek outing. Slashfilm has brought the episode back to the surface now that the two directors will share a franchise, and it's an interesting look back at when Star Trek was first rebooted. The Captain's Daughter. Star Trek Generations brought us a number of shocking moments—the death of Captain Kirk, the destruction of the Enterprise-D—but one with less severe consequences was the revelation that Hikaru Sulu had a daughter. It was just a nod to the passage of time and a nice tidbit for fans that created a connection between the Enterprise-A and Enterprise-B. But did it really make sense? Kirk certainly seemed surprised by it. In this episode of Literary Treks hosts Matthew Rushing and Christopher Jones discuss Peter David's solution to the Demora Conundrum, which came in the form of the 1995 novel The Captain's Daughter. We discuss each of the story's five main points—Death, First Date, Memorial, Parenthood, and Life After Death—and whether or not the solution adequately and believably fills in the backstory of that moment in Generations. In our news segment we take a first look at the upcoming Ships of the Line art book, an attempt to reach younger fans with pop-ups, IDW's plans to bring Q to the Abramsverse, and the Starfleet Medical Officers special comics collaboration between IDW and the Tricorder X-Prize called Flesh and Stone.

In this episode of Literary Treks we’re joined by DeCandido to discuss how he got involved in writing the Star Trek expanded universe, his love of Hikaru Sulu, and even how the Klingons got their ridges back. In our news segment we cover the upcoming Star Trek Visual Dictionary from Dorling Kindersley, Mike and Denise Okuda’s Onboard the Enterprise-D reference book, a new five-book series in development titled The Fall, James Swallow’s The Stuff of Dreams, Dayton Ward’s From History’s Shadow, a complete John Byrne comic collection, and Brannon Braga’s HIVE.
