It's episode 287…and you mean more to me than any scientific truth. Solaris (1973) sees psychologist Kriss Kelvin dispatched to a space station orbiting the titular planet to see if the skeleton crew's reports of strange goings on and mysterious 4 metre tall babies are to be believed, or whether it's a simple case of space madness. While there, he is disturbed by the presence of unexpected ‘guests' on the station, not least the appearance of his wife Hari, who died a decade earlier. We talk about a Soviet science fiction classic, discuss what it means to be human, whether Solaris is just a planet-sized printer, draw up a cost/benefit analysis of firing antique oak bookshelves into space and finally find out the question on everyone's lips - can you eat a burger made out of neutrinos? Plus, a heartwarming story about Joe's young son being obsessed with going to the moon. All of which leads to one question: How would you survive? Whatever happens, one thing's for sure: Whenever we show pity, we empty our souls. Next time on the main feed it's more Space Madness with Aniara (2018), while over on the Patreon it's the turn of Twilight (2008), our monthly bonus film.

It's episode 286…and I will make the land desolate so that your enemies who settle it shall be appalled by it. Mad God (2021) is the singular vision of Phil Tippett, the stop motion genius behind Star Wars' AT-ATs and RoboCop's ED-209. Over the course of 30 years he slowly created what some believe to be his opus–Mad God–a nightmarish film with very little clear story, but an awful lot of grotesque imagery. We talk about a film that is both an impressive technical exercise and a hollow procession of misery, the nauseating levels of skill required to produce it, whether we'd be sad if Gromit died and whether the individual behind dozens of screens showing a babbling baby's face should give more thought to workplace safety. All of which leads to one question: How would you survive? Whatever happens, one thing's for sure: Your land shall become a desolation and your cities a ruin. Next month, we're watching a couple of ‘Space Madness' films - Solaris (1972) and Aniara (2018).

As we continue into our March Into Madness uh....gimmick? We're looking at a special brand of madness. Specifically space madness, which is a pretty common trope you've probably seen if you're at all into Sci-Fi. Sunshine is pretty widely unknown and some people have issues with the final act, but for me, great flick. Then let's talk about Space Mutiny. It's just an hour a a half long laser fight with about 15 minutes of bad acting / line delivery. We're taking a sick break this week, so there's no better time to share our Patreon bonus episode from February 2023 on the first two episodes of the Second Doctor serial, "The Seeds of Death"! It's a really weird one that we haven't stopped thinking about since. Did last week's "Kill the Moon" mean to have continuity with this serial from 1969? No idea. If it did, that would be the one good thing about it! Sam | Jordan Cohost | Tumblr | Twitter | Patreon | Discord | YouTube
We review PANDORUM, and be warned if you've never seen it... we talk spoilers pretty much right away. Madness, right? Well, what would a space horror episode be without a little SPACE MADNESS?! Along for the voyage is our good buddy and special guest, Jeff from The Love of Cinema. We love Jeff even though it sounds like he spends most of the episode inside a car wash, or typing an angry email with his windshield wipers on, or opening a 5-star Bear-like restaurant in his apartment. In addition to reviewing the movie, we also chat the genius of Ben Foster, do some bad Michael Caine impressions, and introduce the world to The Facial Detective. BLAST OFF! As broadcast October 20, 2023 with plenty of meteorites and lightshow magic to spare. It's another feelgood Friday and we've melded our Space Madness series into the mix as well, as the very long tail of dust and magic hits earth's atmosphere this weekend from the visit of Haley's Comet almost 40 years ago in 1986. Known as the Orionid Meteor showers, we started to think of it as Orion Smiling down upon us from way out in space, and our playlist reflected that to get your weekend going in the right way.#feelthegravityOrion Smiles Upon Us10/20/2023Tracklist (st:rt)Part 1 (00:00)James Brown – Sunny (Funk Master JB vs Funkmaster JS Hardboiled remix)James Brown – There Was A Time (Kenny Dope edit)War – BalleroSam & Dave – Hold On (I'm Coming) (King Most remix)Clarence Reid – Masterpiece (Kenny Dope edit)Syl Johnson – Different Strokes Part 2 (30:03)Yann Tomita – We Travel The SpacewaysSpace Dukes – Sunshine On VenusSweeps – Space BluesSun Ra – Love In Outer Space (In Session for BBC Jazz on 3) Part 3 (58:29)Quelle Rox – Space ParadeDragonfruit – Space TravelerThe Midnight Hour feat Cee-Lo Green – QuestionsSay She She – In My HeadKendra Morris – Catch The SunRoy Ayers – The Golden RodRoy Ayers – Life Just A Moment Pt 1 & 2 Part 4 (90:22)A Tribe Called Quest – The Space ProgramCortex – La RueThe Supremes – He's My Sunny BoyThe Impressions – We're A WinnerHank Ballard & The Midnight Lighters – From The Love SideFreddie Hubbard – Pensativa (Live at Club La Marchal, NYC 1965)

The Town Criers' annual rivalry match with the Lawn Beetles is next week, and the pressure has never been higher! As you all know, the Criers have lost the last 9 matches against the Lawn Beetles, and they simply cannot afford another loss. That's where we come in. This week, your podcast heroes encounter a Voyager episode that tries to be half Space Madness, half an episode of Ryan’s Hope and try to understand if it was decent or not. Joseph is convinced “Persistence of Vision” was bad, with its Terrible Janeway Decisions and an underwritten soap opera plot, but Peter is so desperate for a quality episode he tries to defend it! Has Peter finally gotten Voyager Stockholm Syndrome? One thing is for sure – this is the episode to watch for a lot of sweet stage kissing action.

They'll discuss the great moments of "Space Madness", including its retro sci-fi look, it's wonderful musical accompaniment, and of course, Ren's descent into madness. From there, they'll discuss the hilarious "The Boy Who Cried Rat!", Ren and Stimpy's homage to Tom and Jerry, and other classic cartoon predecessors. And if that wasn't enough, they'll also breakdown two great shorts included in the episode: a commercial for the nauseating breakfast cereal, Sugar Frosted Lumps, and Ren and Stimpy's strange preparations for Yak Shaving Day. This episode has it all! So finish your kitty stew paste, get your toaster helmet strapped on, and go mad with us! (Thanks for hitting play, and not the history eraser button!) The Naked Time. The Next Generation went out of its way to avoid connections with The Original Series, but one thing they have in common is crew members getting drunk on water. TNG fans know it as the Psi-2000 virus, but in Kirk's day it was just good ole polywater. Thanks to highly questionable environmental suit design and procedures that would make the CDC cringe, the crew of the Enterprise fell victim to some fancy water molecules that almost killed them. Potential cause of death? Strange behavior. In this episode of The Ready Room we're joined by John Mills, Drew Stewart, and Norm Lao to discuss newly introduced characters acting out of character, crying Vulcans, and why there's always room for time travel. We also explain how to deal with shrinkage and space madness, and we do it all whilst singing a rousing rendition of “I'll Take You Home Again, Kathleen.” In our news segment we discuss Paramount's plans for a resort in London, Kate Mulgrew's upcoming memoir Born with Teeth, and look back at 20 years of Star Trek Generations. Movie Meltdown - Episode 115 This week we return to a bygone era - way back in the early 90’s. Back when sci fi “classics” like Alien Intruder were released straight to a format called VHS. In the Hour of Slack studio, as we acquire new music and clips, we categorize them into various folders according to general subject matter: "Bob," sex, war, etc. This month, the folder of sound files concerned with drugs filled up. This episode, then, is composed of material that either deals with the dangers of drug abuse (especially in outer space), or else makes you feel like you are on drugs and wish you could come down. LeMur, Dr. Hal, the Joker, Radio Synaesthesia, Priestess Pisces, The Psycho Skeletons, Girl Talk, and especially the band Ogo Dys help out.
