Laura Hancock - 13th November 2022 - Is God Really Good?

What constitutes a suitable work/life balance? How much does going the extra mile at work facilitate career progression? How much has the pandemic impacted attitudes to work, productivity and flexibility? In this episode of the Insurance Broker Podcast, we're very pleased to be speaking with Laura Hancock, Founding Director of Yutree Insurance and Deputy Chair of the BIBA board. In conversation with Boston Tullis' Sarah Myerscough, she performs a deep dive on a recent BBC article (linked below) which speculates that putting in extra hours and performing additional tasks in order to get ahead in one's career has transitioned from being the exception to the rule to an employer expectation. Laura argues that there is nothing wrong with putting in additional time and effort at work to get ahead and warns that new attitudes to flexible working facilitated by the pandemic may thwart individuals' career progression and company competitiveness.   Quote of the Episode “If you want to get on, you often have to do a little bit more. That doesn't mean the business should expect you to do more, just that if you want to get on, [you should] do a bit more learning. Therefore, taking a step up is just a natural course of events as far as I'm concerned.” Laura suggests that, particularly for those early in their careers, that stepping up to do additional work is inevitable. If you won't do it, someone else will, and they will perhaps be more likely to secure the kind of career progression you might be looking for as a result. There is nothing nefarious with taking up the opportunity to show one's employer that one is going the extra mile; it demonstrates ambition and a drive to succeed, which is beneficial both on an individual and company level.   Key Takeaways When considering one's career progression, it is good practice to imagine where you want to be after a certain period of time, then calculate backwards the steps required to get there from the position you are currently in. Invariably, if you want to take lavish holidays, live in a beautiful home, and create a comfortable environment for your future family, that will involve putting in extra time or effort in order to make your achievements visible and recognised at work. The insurance industry is still grappling with the change caused by the pandemic. Our traditionalist sector has not easily adapted to the notion that people can work from home and businesses can still be successful. While this has proven to be false as a general sentiment, Laura suggests that the servicing issues which brokers are experiencing from insurers can be attributed to the fact that hybrid work models aren't working as well as they might. Employees want flexibility, but giving more, or too much flexibility, can create a slump, whereby people become complacent in their positions. Laura argues that it is becoming increasingly important for a balance to be struck regarding flexible working solutions, whereby the community element of office working and the feeling of being valued and accomplished, and achieving progression in one's career, is not lost. She suggests that this is particularly crucial with regard to young workers and new graduates, who may be losing a lot by not going into the office on a regular basis. The ability to ask people questions directly as and when is needed is a significant learning opportunity which is squandered by working from home. As such, she argues that there is a duty on behalf of both young new employees and experienced people to be in the office regularly in order to facilitate their learning.   Best Moments/Key Quotes “Insurers are big companies, they take a long time to move. For many years, it’s clear that something has been off with how we work as yoga teachers. In the 10 years that I was a full time yoga teacher, I had countless conversations with fellow teachers who were being bullied by their employer, had their classes cut unfairly, or have simply not been paid for the classes they taught. However, late last year, the world's first union for yoga teachers was created in New York for the teachers who were employees of the YogaWorks studios there. Many yoga teachers, though, are not employees.Then, last week (early October 2020) something groundbreaking happened. A small group of committed yoga teachers in the UK (Normal Blair, Laura Hancock, Julie Pons and today’s guest, Kallie Schut) created the world’s second union for yoga teachers, and the first for those of us who are independent contractors! Kallie Schut shares a great deal about the formation of the union (which you can read more about below) However, Kallie also does a great deal of work around decolonising yoga & antiracism training that we didn’t get into in this episode. Episode Notes Ohio legislators seem ready to require universal background checks for guns, but rural legislators appear to remain dead-set against allowing cities like Cleveland to reduce gun violence. The debate on guns is where we begin the discussion on the latest episode of This Week in the CLE, the podcast discussion of the news by the state’s hardest-working news team, the reporters and editors at cleveland.com. Politics editor Jane Kahoun handicaps the gun bills, giving much better odds to a bill mandating the universal background checks than she does for a bill allowing municipal governments to pass their own rules about guns. Cleveland City Hall reporter Bob Higgs updates the move by city firefighters to get the fire chief fired for campaigning for Mayor Frank Jackson, in violation of the city charter. Bob offers his perspective on why firefighters so dislike their chief. Bob also talks about the city’s quandary in dealing with dirt bike riders who stormed city streets recently, blocking off intersections and interfering with traffic. The panel wonders, though, whether this is the big deal that Councilman Mike Polensek makes it out to be. Given all of the other issues in Cleveland, does it matter if people are delayed for a moment by people out joyriding? Listen to the podcast for more information. Bob explains how the city is finally allowing the return of the scooters, which are popular in other cities, after ordering them removed last year. We also discuss the efforts by the Ohio Debate Commission to bring order and value to debates by candidates for office, but the panel also wonders whether the effort is worth the trouble. No matter what the rules, candidates always seem to say what they want to say and avoid answering questions that trouble them. Reporter Mary Kilpatrick covered a City Club forum about the issue and has the details. We wonder whether a ballot initiative might result in the most expensive campaign spending in history. Jane explains how a move to abolish a bailout of the state’s increasingly obsolete nuclear plants – forced upon taxpayers by the Legislature and Gov. Mike DeWine – could show up on the ballot in 2020, as opponents work to abolish the bailout. Jane, who handled and outsized portion of the week’s big news, also explains what Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost wants to do to help ensure that a move to legalize hemp in Ohio does not accidentally legalize marijuana. She also provides details of Statehouse reporter Laura Hancock’s sleuthing to explain why Medicaid enrollment has dropped nearly every month since 2017. Jane also talks about her favorite story of the week, the Ohio Supreme Court’s smackdown of Bratenahl, where elected leaders have been illegally concealing their votes on issues from the public. They have been meeting in public but holding secret ballots. Amazingly, two lower courts said that was okay. The Supreme Court finally weighed in and told tony Bratenahl to obey the law and do business in the sunshine. Crime reporter Adam Ferrise talks about what he learned from public records about how a man came to be shot to death by an off-duty cop outside a bowling alley in University Circle last year. Adam also offers up the various explanations he was given for why $17,000 in handcuffs sit unused at the Cuyahoga County Jail, even though jail consultants say those handcuffs should be in the hands of the guards. Cuyahoga County reporter Courtney Astolfi tells us why the administration of County Executive Armond Budish hired as a jail consultant the very person they fired some years ago, before the jail became an endless source of embarrassing news for Budish.
