In this episode of the Bikepack Adventures podcast, I have a chance to speak with Chris Lee-Francis. I first interviewed Chris nearly a year ago, but unfortunately, something went wrong with the audio and I was never able to release the episode. Fortunately, in the aftermath of the failed episode, Chris finished his travel memoir, Eastwards and Far and was gracious enough to send me a copy. Chris' story has a certain flow about it, one in which the experienced bike tourer easily relates to and the would be bike tourer can't help but be captivated by. SIMON SCARROW chats to Paul Burke about his new to paperback thriller BLACKOUT, the importance of teaching and understanding history, challenging views of the past, writing historical fiction, Cato and Macro and how telling a joke could get you executed in Nazi Germany.BLACKOUT: Berlin, December 1939As Germany goes to war, the Nazis tighten their terrifying grip. Paranoia in the capital is intensified by a rigidly enforced blackout that plunges the city into oppressive darkness every night, as the bleak winter sun sets. When a young woman is murdered, Criminal Inspector Horst Schenke is under pressure to solve the case, swiftly. Distrusted by his superiors for his failure to join the Nazi Party, Schenke walks a perilous line - for disloyalty is a death sentence. The discovery of a second victim confirms Schenke's worst fears. He must uncover the truth before evil strikes again. As the investigation takes him closer to the sinister heart of the regime, Schenke realises there is danger everywhere - and the warring factions of the Reich can be as deadly as a killer stalking the streets . . .SIMON SCARR is a Sunday Times No. 1 bestselling author. After a childhood spent travelling the world, he pursued his great love of history as a teacher, before becoming a full-time writer. His Roman soldier heroes Cato and Macro made their debut in 2000 in UNDER THE EAGLE, and have subsequently appeared in many bestsellers in the Eagles of the Empire series, including CENTURION, INVICTUS and DAY OF THE CAESARS.Simon Scarrow is also the author of a quartet of novels about the lives of the Duke of Wellington and Napoleon Bonaparte, YOUNG BLOODS, THE GENERALS, FIRE AND SWORD and THE FIELDS OF DEATH; a novel about the 1565 Siege of Malta, SWORD & SCIMITAR; HEARTS OF STONE, set in Greece during the Second World War; and PLAYING WITH DEATH, a contemporary thriller written with Lee Francis. Lee Francis spent a couple of seasons at Chesterfield FC after joining on loan from Arsenal in 1990, including playing in a playoff final in just his 5th appearance. The defender was a key member of the team until leaving the club in 1992. He went onto play non-league football for a variety of clubs before spending four years learning the knowledge on his way to becoming a London Cabbie.
Rachel and Simon speak with historical novelist Simon Scarrow. Simon worked first as a schoolteacher, before becoming a full-time writer. His Roman-era "Eagles of the Empire" series has sold over 4 million copies in the UK alone, and his work has been translated into 24 languages. His other work includes a quartet of novels about the lives of the Duke of Wellington and Napoleon Bonaparte, a novel about the 1565 Siege of Malta, a contemporary thriller written with Lee Francis, and "Blackout", the first in a new series set in Berlin during the early months of the Second World War. We spoke to Simon about his interest in historical fiction, the surprisingly varied readership of his novels and the financial benefits of writing a series. In 1763 twenty indigenous people in the colony of Pennsylvania were murdered by an armed gang. The victims had been a peaceful group of Conestogas, who had been wrongfully accused of aiding in violent raids against the settlers. The infamous attack would go down in history as the Conestoga massacre. However, almost immediately after the murders the meaning of the event became the source of a fierce war in the press. The so-called "pamphlet war" saw two competing groups trying to sell contrasting interpretations of the attack. The perspective that was inevitably left out of these pamphlets, and the "official" historical record, was the indigenous perspective. The new graphic novel Ghost River: The Fall and Rise of Conestoga seeks to remedy that by telling the story with the focus squarely on the Conestoga people. In this episode Sebastian is joined by the creative team behind Ghost River, Weshoyot Alvitre, Lee Francis IV, and Will Fenton, to discuss the graphic novel and how fake news can become fake history. Business Owner, Publisher, and Writer Dr. Lee Francis IV delivers a fantastic interview about pursuing your dreams.
To celebrate the publication of the Library Company of Philadelphia's first graphic novel, Ghost River: The Fall and Rise of the Conestoga, editor Dr. Will Fenton invited the artist, Weshoyot Alvitre, and the author, Dr. Lee Francis IV, onto Talking in the Library to discuss the collaborative process that enabled the volume. Weshoyot Alvitre is the illustrator of numerous award-winning comics, graphic novels, and even video games. Dr. Lee Francis IV is the founder of Indigenous Comic Con and the owner of Red Planet Books & Comics, the premier publisher for Native American comics and popular art. Listeners can explore the entire graphic novel at ghostriver.org or visit the exhibition at the Library Company of Philadelphia until April 10, 2020 to see the original artwork, watch a behind-the-scenes documentary, or pick up a first edition of the graphic novel.
Upon completing a doctorate in education, Lee Francis IV was faced with a career decision--follow the path of his father, who was an academic, or create his own path. He chose the latter. A self-proclaimed "Indigenerd," Lee tells the stories of Native American superheroes and indigenous icons through comic books. He is the founder of Native Realities, a publishing company that produces and distributes comics to children, youth, and adults. He also is the founder of Indigenous Comic Con (now Indigenous Pop X) that brings together Native American creatives representing multiple art mediums. In this episode, we discuss the art of storytelling, the importance of owning your own content, and living life in the "gig economy."

What would be end of colonization look like? Conversation with self described indiginerd and founder of Indigenous comic-con about comics, futurism, and the unbridled utopic vision that only those who have already experienced an apocalypse can have.
Dr. Lee Francis IV (Laguna Pueblo), self-described indiginerd poet, educator, activist, comic creator and owner of Native Realities Press, co-owner of Red Planet Books & Comics, and founder of Indigenous ComicCon, generously sat down with us for a comprehensive and wide-ranging interview on why he started these businesses, the current state of affairs for #Indigenous #comics, and how he attempts to #decolonize the comics medium. Lee's creative enterprises also provide an antidote to the "sidekickery" that #Native characters are usually relegated to in comics and other mediums by creating binders of skilled Native artists and writers that he hopes will get mainstream comics publishers away from using Indigenous creators as lip service consultants and instead, provide these makers with an equal seat at the table. "We want to be able to write our own stories. Tell them in the way we tell them," Lee says.
