Rain, sleet, snow, mud, and ice can be a MESS! It's not easy taking care of animals outside in the cold, especially in Wisconsin winters. Some horses do well on their own with a little extra hair, food, and shelter while others may not. Dr. Howard Ketover, veterinarian at Irongate Equine Clinic says there's several things to take into consideration when it comes to caring for your horses in the winter. He says, “Maintaining access to clean, warm water is very important as horses tend to drink best when the water temperature ranges between 85 and 65 degrees Fahrenheit.” Utilizing heaters to maintain appropriate water temperatures reduces the risk of decreased water consumption, which can lead to potential medical issues. Additionally, rather than increasing grain during colder months, having constant access to high-quality forage, particularly hay, is advised.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Jec interviews Alicia Harlov, owner of the Humble Hoof and the Humble Hoof podcast. In their conversation, Jec and Alicia talk a lot about horse management - things that might not seem like they have anything to do with hooves. But, of course, everything has to do with hooves and hooves are like canaries in a coal mine. I mean, the wellness of a hoof can tell you a lot about the whole horse, its environment, its diet. If the hoof is unwell, then something is likely off in the way that horse is being kept, like too much grain or not enough exercise. It's a really great interview and I hope you enjoy it. Otherwise…How are you doing? I'm smiling here because Jec and I have spent several recent episodes talking about the cool and clear, not the warm and fuzzies. So perhaps you all have thought that we don't really care about how horse owners are doing.  As in: If warm and fuzzies are about feelings and Jec and Maddy are contesting the value of warm and fuzzies in horse owning and riding sphere, then that must mean they don't care about feelings or how horse owners are doing or any of that. Of course, that's not what we meant. In a nutshell, our lean towards cool and clear has to do with what's best for horses. But, of course, we're interested in how our listeners are doing. Let us hear from you. Would you like to give us any push back around our push back of the warm and fuzzies? Are we off the mark? Winter is dark and cold. It can be hard to ride or spend any quality time with our horses. At the moment, there are history-making floods in California. Jec reports that her horses have been in standing water, with nowhere to go. Here in Colorado, we've spent about a week shoveling and have about two feet of snow. We would love to hear from you. Send us an email and let us know how you're getting through these long nights. Our title sponsor is Lucerne Farms, producers of quality forage feeds.  Lucerne is a small company in Aroostock County in northern Maine. They make forage, from timothy and alfalfa, a great option if you are looking to add calories to your horses' diet this winter. Check them out here or at your local feed store. I wanted to clarify a few things Jec and Alicia mentioned. At one point, Jec states that when horses have a hoof concern sometimes their back muscles deactivate. By this, she means that the small stabilizing muscles switch off. She sees it especially in Western Pleasure horses. You may see a stillness or kind of a numbness to a horse's back. One telltale sign is that the end of a horse's tail will be still when ideally it should be swinging from side to side. Alicia mentions ECIR. That's the Equine Cushing's and Insulin Resistance Group. We thank Redmond Equine and Pharm Aloe – two sponsors with no-nonsense products for your horses. We thank Patagonia WorkWear, which makes some pretty awesome gear for crappy weather and hard work. Like the new waffle crew. A great baselayer. Order a size up as it fits snuggly. Our next Patagonia WorkWear giveaways – two of them – will be awarded to folks who give us feedback around the warm and fuzzy versus the cool and clear conversations we've been having.

Dr Luke Wells-Smith from Motion Equine Centre is an equine veterinarian who specialises in hooves. Even as a 15-year-old shoeing horses in his Grandad's trail riding business, Luke understood that keeping horses sound revolved around correct foot care. Driven by a self-confessed addiction to making horses feel more comfortable, Luke consults to veterinary hospitals, industry stakeholders and insurance companies in Australia and overseas. His expertise also helped to keep Amanda Ross' event horse, Dicavalli Diesel, performing at 4* level, despite the warmblood's less-than-perfect foot conformation. In this bumper episode, listen as Luke shares why there's nothing more satisfying than being able to influence an almost-instantaneous improvement in equine movement.Luke weighs in on what it takes to create an environment where performance horses can compete barefoot, as well as when and how to use studs on your eventer.Uncover the truth about hoof supplements and dressings plus get Luke's advice on what really works to harden hooves.Hear why Luke doesn't mind if your horse is naughty when he's visiting, but how to avoid getting ghosted by your farrier.Find out the reason Luke believes there's no such thing as a “perfect hoof” and the best way to identify the perfect management plan for your own horse's feet. Why do his staff call Luke the “Stable Nazi”? Hint – it's got to do with creating the perfect bedding for when your horse is on box rest.Commiserate over why holding a shoeing nail or plaiting needle between your teeth is a trap for young players! All this and so much more in this episode of THE EQUESTRIAN EXPERIENCE.

Question of the Day: I recently inherited an amazing trail horse but he is old, 20-24, and has been sitting for 3 years. Do you have any tips for getting him back in shape in a gentle way?In this episode, we discuss how to get a horse who has been out of work for sometime onto the trail and in shape. We look into hoof care, body issues, such as arthritis and tension, and how we can approach our conditioning using a long, slow distance program. We highlight that the most important piece is to get good at reading your horse and knowing when he can go further and when it has been too much for him. This episode is brought to you by Ningenuity. Wet conditions, and physical trauma that can result from those uneven walking surfaces and slips while walking contribute to higher incidences of digital dermatitis. This podcast discusses the effect of winter weather on digital dermatitis management and provides some ideas and tips to keep hooves healthy and digital dermatitis at bay during the winter.

Your horse’s feet are his foundation. What does a healthy hoof look like? Does your horse need shoes, or is he fine barefoot? And what about hoof boots? Join our host, Michelle Anderson, as she interviews Dr. Scott Fleming, and equine podiatrist at Rood & Riddle Equine Hospital, in Lexington, Kentucky. You'll learn how to work with your farrier (or trimmer) and veterinarian to ensure your horse’s feet receive the right care.Dr. Fleming, originally from Northeast Texas, grew up riding Western performance Quarter Horses and working with cattle. Upon graduating from high school, he attended farrier school and maintained a Quarter-Horse-centric farrier business in Northeast and Central Texas. He also served in the Marine Corps Infantry for four years. Dr. Fleming received his DVM from Texas A&M College of Veterinary Medicine & Biomedical Sciences in 2013, completed an internship at Rood & Riddle in 2013-14, and remained at the hospital as a fellow. Currently, he is an associate veterinarian at Rood & Riddle. He also has a special interest in participating in Equitarian Initiative trips to Central America to help working equids in the region. Outside the clinic, Dr. Fleming enjoys spending time on the farm with his wife, Tina, and their two children, Callie and Case.

Hoof Care focuses on working with the horse, not against them. When it comes to farrier work, it is essential in looking at the horse as a whole. A job well done not only means that the trim is successful and the shoes are well suited and well fit, but the experience has been positive for the horse and he’s a little better because of it.
