We're completing the Old Kingdom trilogy and becoming Abhorsens in our own right. We discuss Lirael's interiority, forgive Sam for his book 2 failings, start a cult dedicated to Mogget worship, and consider how this series helped inspire the current YA fantasy horror boom. We went to the ninth gate and returned, what did you do this weekend? And remember: nothing says fell necromancy like a lightning farm.EPISODE MEDIAOur other Old Kingdom and Garth Nix episodes:Sabriel (very first episode of the podcast, listen at your own risk)Sabriel (Redux)LiraelThe RagwitchMister MondaySabriel concept art by Josh WongMUSIC - Pippin the Hunchback and Thatched Villagers by Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com) - Licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 3.0 License http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/

This week, we're talking about Abhorsen by Garth Nix. Join us for a discussion of character growth, using metaphorical molotov cocktails to exchange one problem for another, and - of course - what the cat would think of it all.NB: This is the third in The Old Kingdom Series, after Sabriel and Lirael. Your hosts wax poetic about nostalgic memories of the Old Kingdom series (even if Lilly doesn't like that name). They give an overview of the series including the original trilogy Sabriel, Lirael, and Abhorsen and the recent installations Clariel, Goldenhand, and Terciel & Elinor. It's a rare pleasure to reread a book that was so influential to our youth that is still enjoyable as adults. They also explore purposeful mispronunciations of words (like Abhorsen) and the general foibles that follow. Thanks to the following musicians for the use of their songs:- Amarià for the use of “Sérénade à Notre Dame de Paris”- Josh Woodward for the use of “Electric Sunrise”Licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 4.0 License

Garth Nix is one of Australia's best selling authors, having previously worked as a literary agent, marketing consultant, book editor, book publicist, book sales representative, bookseller, and as a part-time soldier in the Australian Army Reserve. Having sold over 5 million copies, Garth's books include the award-winning young adult fantasy novels Sabriel, Lirael, Abhorsen and Clariel; the dystopian novel Shade's Children; the space opera A Confusion of Princes; and a Regency romance with magic, Newt's Emerald. Ahead of the release of his new book 'The Left-Handed Booksellers of London'(part of #Booktoberfest), Sarah and Shanu sat down with Garth to discuss his use of instinct for the book, how his travels inspired the book, bringing his past to the page, and more. Thank you again to Yama for commissioning this episode!I'm really beginning to get into where this is all going, and I was surprised by how affected I was by the fact that Lirael gets to see her mother again. Last time if I'm not mistaken, we see scenes of her mother's past, but I don't think she actually addresses Lirael, does she? Either way, her telling Lirael "I love you" was really something I needed. And then we find out that Lirael and Nick have to go off together to one of the sites of Orannis's destruction, and I'm not here for this mess. At. All. Thanks for listening, everyone, and I will see you soon with a new episode!

Thank you very much to Yama for commissioning this episode! So I'm very curious about how y'all feel about this book because I can't tell if I'm being reasonable or impatient regarding my expectation that we should be a little further along with things by now. Ferin I'm mostly okay with, because she is a character that I expected to have a long travel-focused quest...but I really didn't expect for Lirael to have barely made it into the glacier by the time this section wraps up. However, I may just be feeling this way due to recovering some ground from The Creature In The Case. Anyway, thanks for listening! I will see you soon with a new episode!

Thank you Yama for commissioning this episode! These chapters are really funny in their way, because there's such total awkwardness between Lirael and Nick. God the two of them have no real idea how to talk to one another, and I'm just over here praying that they figure it out before they have to face a monster together or something. Meanwhile, the woodweirds are chasing Ferin along with the rest of a whole village, and it's getting the point that they will NOT be able to outrun these things any further. So they're about to do something to distract them, but the section ends before I find out how it goes! Thanks so much again to everyone for listening, and I will see you soon with a new episode!
Thank you to Yama for commissioning this episode! This book is really fun because it starts before the end of The Creature In The Case, but it's from Lirael's perspective (for some of it, at least) so we get to see what she's thinking and experiencing in the same situations as Nick. She's super into him, and unwilling to admit it to herself, and it's adorable. Meanwhile, Chlorr is out here basically taking human sacrifices and shit? Word??? Thanks for listening, and I will see you soon with a new episode!
Thank you to Yama for commissioning this episode! In this episode we get the conclusion of Nicholas Sayre's adventure with a freaky Free Magic creature, and we get a little bit of interesting information about him that seems to imply that he's related to one of the 9 who set the hemispheres to rest the first time. Also, it seems that Lirael has a bit of a crush on him, and I ship it. Thanks so much for listening, and I will see you soon with a new episode!
Thank you so much to Abbey for commissioning this episode, and thank you to Yama for correcting my mistake on the earlier post in which I thought that I had fucked up and in fact HAD, but in a different way than I thought. Oof! It's been a confusing month, y'all! It's finally the finale episode! And I was really impressed with the way this book ended, even despite the fact that there's not a horribile, tragic death. The Disreputable Dog passes on into death, though, and we know that Lirael is really going to miss her, even though I really don't quite count her as a death in the same way because I knew that she wasn't going to stick around forever. I really enjoyed this book, and I'm impressed how the author got me to feel just how high the stakes were when I'm kind of immune to apocalypse storylines. I was genuinely a little freaked out. Thanks so much for listening, and I will see you soon with a new episode!

Thank you very much to Abbey for commissioning this episode! We've only got one more to go before this story wraps up, and I for one am still on the edge of my seat. I want to know what exactly Mogget is up to, I want to see Sam reunited with Sabriel and Touchstone, I want to see Nick rescued (PLEASE let him be rescued) and I want to see what it looks like to bind a creature of this kind of power. But first, we've got to deal with Hedge. Predictably, he has followed Lirael into Death and he's decided that it's a really good idea to battle her in a place that is so dangerous that even getting a glimpse of the sky will cause him to be pulled away from the mortal veil forever. Gotta say, Hedge, it doesn't feel like you thought this one through. Thanks so much for listening, and I will see you again soon with a new episode!
Thank you very much to Abbey for commissioning this episode! Y'all I have to tell you YET AGAIN how fucking nervous it makes me when Lirael goes into Death. Omfg it just gives me the worst anxiety, and she is spending SO LONG in there this time around! And still isn't even halfway to the gate she needs! I can't handle it.There's a lot going on with Mogget, too, which I didn't really pick up on last time because I was too busy cackling at the ineffective but heartfelt contribution he made towards overpowering Chlorr. Turns out, though, that the others feel they'd been on the verge of victory until Mogget told Chlorr to run, and they feel that he's playing at some other game. Which maybe he is! But weirdly, I trust him? Thanks for listening, everyone, and I will see you soon with a new episode!
Episode 205: Guardians of Knowledge - Magical Libraries in Speculative Fiction Libraries have come a long way since the days when they were almost entirely concerned with subscription users borrowing books, although that is still often the perception. In real life, libraries are places of nostalgia, even wonder. In speculative fiction the 'jack of all trades' approach of modern libraries is usually taken to new extremes. This week the dragons delve into the subject of libraries in speculative fiction - what do they represent? How are they iterated by different authors? What is the parallel between libraries and magical systems? Join Jules and Madeleine as they explore the darker, more whimsical side of knowledge keeping. On the shelf this week - Lirael by Garth Nix, The Flight of Dragons, Avatar the Last Airbender and many more. Title music: Ecstasy by Smiling Cynic
Thank you very much to Abbey for commissioning this episode! These chapters are really interesting to me because things don't really go according to plan, and yet they all work out for the best (at least in the short term). Lirael and Sameth attempt to cross the wall under a glamour to make them look like soldiers, but the people who work there are no fools and they can tell something is up. Which, you know what? GOOD. Thank heaven for that. I'm really hopeful that they're going to be able to help poor Nick because I'm still weirdly preoccupied with worry about him. At the very least, I'm impressed with Sameth getting ahold of himself despite the news (which we now know is incorrect) that his parents are dead. He's really growing! Thanks so much for listening, and I will see you soon with a new episode!
Huge thanks to Abbey for commissioning this episode! I'm delighted to have so much of this book left to go, because it's been a huge amount of fun and I'm not ready to say goodbye to these characters yet. In fact, I'm not ready to say goodbye to this world yet. In these chapters, we've got a whole lot going on with Lirael and Nicholas. She's got her work cut out for her to convince him that there's something going on with him other than a simple fever, and it's not until he tries to fight back against the fragment taking him over that he really gets a good sense of how serious the situation is. Then we get the tale from the Disresputable Dog about what exactly is in the hemispheres, and unsurprisingly, it's nothing good. Thank you so much for listening, and I will see you soon with a new episode!
Thank you to Abbey for commissioning this episode! Soooooo...funny story. Here's the thing. I got a little overexcited and I just...kept reading. So this one episode is actually going to cover 100 pages rather than the usual 50. MY BAD!I just was so INTERESTED. We start out in the well, with our crew heading under into the dark. It's not so bad at first, because we've got Lirael's light to see by...but there's something else down there, and soon the light is snuffed out. This leads to one of the creepiest scenes in the books so far, and we say goodbye to Mogget. Except we don't. WHAT IS HAPPENING?
Thank you so much to Abbey for commissioning this episode! I'm so excited to be starting this book, because damn but it starts out with a serious fucking gut punch. Sabriel and Touchstone are killed, abruptly and brutally, in a prologue that's just kind of a shock and which I had to reread to be sure that I wasn't misreading. Because GODDAMN. Then there's the tension of what's going on with Lirael and Sameth, and they wind up in the same scenario as Sabriel a couple decades back...they have to get the fuck out of the Abhorsen's house because they've been cornered. And the only real option is down a well with something horrible hiding in it. NO THANKS. Thanks so much for listening!
Thank you to Abbey for commissioning this entire book!I can't believe this one is the last episode of the whole of Lirael, and I'm sitting here absolutely dying to find out what the hell is going to happen to Poor Nicholas (that's his official name now) whom I suspect is just kind of being eaten alive from the inside by a dark force. Fucking Hedge. I hate you. Meanwhile, Lirael has found out that she's actually Sameth's aunt, and it's the best way to quash his inappropriate crush on her that I've ever heard of. Sameth, I swear to god, you need to shut the fuck up about how her scarf looks. Thanks for listening, and I can't wait to see you with Abhorsen!
Thank you so much to Ashleigh for commissioning this episode! These chapters are the ones in which Sameth and Lirael finally meet up with one another, and it's not exactly a meet cute, since they both do not trust one another and their pets don't even get along. But first, Lirael has a run-in with Hedge, the creepy AF necromancer that almost got to Sameth and who already did get to poor Nicholas. This is the one thing that she and Sameth can bond over, and yet despite Sameth's apparent concern for his friend Nicholas, he's still low-key planning to chill at the Abhorsen house and let Lirael go on by her lonesome because he's just that big a traitor at this point. Come on, Sam. Don't do this. Thanks so much for listening, and I will see you soon with a new episode!

Thank you to Abbey for commissioning this episode! These chapters find me a little more patient with Sameth and Lirael than before, if only because they're both facing some serious shit now. Sameth especially is really fucking going through it, being followed by gore crows and dead hands so that he can't sleep and can't drop his guard for a second. Then there's what is going on with Lirael, which at first seems to be going pretty well since the despicable dog is back, and she's seemingly beginning to accept the fact that her mission isn't some excuse to kick her out the door. But then she goes into death...and I'm not too thrilled with how that seems to be going. Thank you so much for listening, and i will see you soon with a new episode!
Garth Nix is a bestselling Australian author known for his award-winning YA fantasy books Sabriel, Lirael and many more. This master of fantasy now returns with a brand new book called Angel Mage, an amazing adventure of angels, heroes, gunpowder and high magic. Booktopia's Sarah and Shanu sat down to chat with Garth about Angel Mage, his writing and creating processes, quick fire questions and more! Hey there, beautiful people! Thanks to Abbey for commissioning this episode of Lirael! I had a lot of sympathy for Lirael last episode, but that patience is at an end. She's not hearing the words that are being said to her, instead choosing to filter it all through the misconception the everyone around her sees her as somehow Other, a freak. Meanwhile, I've also lost patience with Sameth, who is embarking on his journey to "save" Nicholas with no fucking clue, and will very soon be in need of "saving" himself if he isn't careful. Thanks again for listening, and I will see you soon with a new episode!
Thanks to Abbey for commissioning another episode of Lirael! This has been a lot of fun to read now that we're in more than one POV, and I feel like the author is really getting better at setting up who these characters are before we get into the main adventure.Lirael isn't having the best time. Spoiler alert, neither is Sameth. He's supposed to be studying the Book Of The Dead, and yet just touching it causes what amounts to a PTSD flashback, which sucks and makes him super self-conscious when seeing his parents again. Meanwhile, Lirael still isn't gifted with Sight, and decides to go on a bit of a quest with the Despicable Dog, which leads to a really ancient cave that literally bears her name. What in the Abhorsen is going on here? Thanks for listening, and I will see you again soon with a new episode!
Thank you to Abbey for commissioning this episode! I'm so glad that there's more of this book already commissioned because I'm dying to figure out what's going on. I kind of squeezed in everything that happened to Lirael into the end of the episode because I spend so much time on Sameth and his friend Nick who winds up getting nailed with the creepy metal shard gadget that was intended for Sameth. I'm not excited about seeing the results of that later on. YIKES!Then Lirael goes on an interesting expedition as an otter that results in her discovering a mysterious door labeled "Lirael's Path" and she follows it...but not without considerable encouragement from the Dog, who is making me pretty suspicious. Thanks so much for listening, and I will see you soon with a new episode!
Thank you to Abbey for commissioning this episode of Lirael! I'm really excited because there's a new character being introduced to the story and I'm here for it! First off, though, there's something that Lirael needs to deal with. And it's got hooks for hands. Oh, and also there's a mysterious dog here who is just not being honest about what's going on and I am major suspicious about what the hell this dog actually is. But then, Sameth! Sabriel's son! What?! And he very nearly gets wrapped up in a spell and only JUST barely escapes but I'm not confident that some of that spell didn't sink in?? I have no idea what the hell is going on there but I don't like it. Thanks for listening!
Thank you to Abbey for commissioning this episode! This section of Lirael is super interesting because she gets approval to work at the Library, which turns out to be just as dangerous as the Clayr have warned her. Unfortunately, it doesn't seem like Lirael was prepared to take that as seriously as she should have, and now something has gotten out. I'm loving the usage of magic in this book, and the ways in which various spells are handled or created, and how they can be trapped in objects. It's wild. There's a point at which there are charter marks in the tears pouring down Lirael's face, which I find so imaginative. Thanks so much for listening, and I will see you soon with a new episode!
In part 5, Jill and Lewel discuss chapters 25 through the Epilogue of Nix's 1995 YA Dark Fantasy novel Sabriel.Sabriel and Touchstone cross the Wall to Ancelstierre in order to disinter and destroy Kerrigor, the Greatest Dead.
Huge thanks to Abbey for once again coming through and pre-ordering a whole book! Woohoo! This is the start of a new story set in the same world as Sabriel, and it follows nearly 15 years after the events of the previous book. There's a lot of mystery surrounding just who Lirael is, and I'm of course low-key wanting her to be related to Sabriel in some way. Meanwhile, there's some new torment on the horizon, as a dude surfaces who apparently can harness a dark power even stronger than Kerrigor's. Me no lilkey.
I sit down with Lirael Jane Doe this week to talk about the benefits of weed and jiu-jitsu, growing up in the South, getting dumped after a GWAR show, hunting with her grandfather, having her balls cut off, dating as a transgender woman, and she answers listener questions for you all. Also I spoil Midsommar.
In part 4, Jill and Lewel discuss chapters 19 through 24 of Nix's 1995 YA Dark Fantasy novel Sabriel.Sabriel, Mogget and Touchstone descend to the reservoir of Belisaere and find the Abhorsen just in time for a trap to be sprung.
In part 3, Jill and Lewel discuss chapters 13 through 18 of Nix's 1995 YA Horror/Fantasy novel Sabriel.Sabriel and Mogget meet a new companion in the unlikeliest of places and continue their quest to Belisaere, still hoping to save the Abhorsen.
In part 2, Jill and Lewel discuss chapters 7 through 12 of Nix's 1995 YA Horror/Fantasy novel Sabriel.
We’re heading to the House to dive into Mister Monday, book one of The Keys to the Kingdom by Garth Nix! Reading Mister Monday for this episode was our introduction to the series, and though we think we need to explore additional books before we’re able to get a true feel for the series, we thoroughly enjoyed this wild ride. Our discussion ranges far and wide, with extended reflections on Arthur’s relatability, fantasy’s fixation on horrible gym class teachers and Garth Nix’s talent for creating truly terrifying monsters inside elaborate worlds. This episode was a listener request - thanks, Marina! Content Warning: SuicideWe're celebrating the two year anniversary of Dragon Babies with a return to the series that started it all! While those who have been listening since our first episode will note our marked improvement in podcasting quality, they will be delighted to learn that our fervor for Garth Nix's Abhorsen books remains the same. Naturally, we want to spend every waking moment with Lirael in the The Great Library of the Clayr, but as adults we have much more compassion for Sameth and his chapters than we expected. Whether you're secretly an Abhorsen-in-training or just a dude who has seriously put off doing his homework, we think you'll enjoy this one. Rereading it brought back so many of the sentiments that inspired us to start this podcast in the first place, and give YA fantasy the respect and attention it deserves. Thanks so much for listening!Note - the vocal fry is outta control in this one but Seattle also currently has some of the lowest quality air on the planet, so. Cathie Sue and Adrienne were lucky to interview Garth Nix author of the Old Kingdom series at the Texas Teen Book Festival in Austin. His new book “Clariel” joins “Sabriel,” “Lirael,” and “Abhorsen.”
