The topic of regrets has come up in multiple conversations recently, so I'm reposting a show I often reference. “No regrets” is an American slogan along with “No Fear” and “Just Do It.” Yet more often than not we don't, just do it. Nor should we. And having no fear is psychopathic. To me, having no regrets means you have no sorrow for ever hurting anyone or making a mistake. Even if you learned a lot and redeemed some things, I've felt regret has a purpose. Regret is simply recognizing sadness or disappointment about something we did that we wish we hadn't, or we didn't do and wish we had, and Dan Pink's research showcases it's a massive power if we'll recognize your regrets and learn from them. Not as he says, reject them or wallow in them. This was my second time having Dan on the show. He's a multi-best selling author, and when I say best selling, I don't mean one day on an obscure Amazon book category like Amish Romance, but the actual New York Times bestseller list. You'll likely recognize his books such as A Whole New Mind, Drive, To Sell Is Human, and When. His books have sold millions of copies, have been translated into forty-two languages. He also has a TED talk titled “The Puzzle of Motivation” which has somewhere north of 30 million views. Dan is an author like Brene' Brown who leads with research, and my muse in this episode is his book, The Power of Regret: How Looking Backward Moves Us Forward. I asked him back on the show the moment I saw the book title and you're about to hear me dig in with him on how we can harness regret for our progress, not suffer or run from it. Until then may I use my time as you desire . . . In 1985, Old Order Amish couple Celeste and Vin Lantz have been married for six years. Vin is a carpenter by trade but an artist in his heart. He is especially captivated by drawing portraits, which the Amish consider idolatry. Knowing they could be shunned, Celeste is shocked to discover that Vin has secretly been sketching her and their sons. When she confronts Vin, they argue and Vin storms off . . . and seems to disappear, leaving Celeste to wonder if he chose his art over his family. When he leaves the house that night, Vin seeks peace on his favorite mountain overlook. But he takes a fall and wakes to find himself injured and lost. Vin soon realizes just how far he has traveled—not only in distance but back in time, to 1822 Ohio, a place that provides the freedom he craved but where he is separated from his beloved wife and children. Vin is saved by the kindness of strangers and gradually learns to survive and even to use his skills to help his new friends in this unfamiliar time and place. But all the while he prays desperately for God to return him to his family, before Celeste makes a new life without him. For fans of Amish romance and time-slip novels comes a gripping story of faith, freedom, redemption, and the truest desires of the heart by New York Times bestselling author Cindy Woodsmall. Join me as I chat with Cindy Woodsmall and Erin Woodsmall as we talk about their slipstream, Amish historical fiction novel on Monday, January 15th, at 7 pm Eastern time. The Amish community generally fascinates the modern world, particulary here in the West. Our latest rollout of technological advancement, AI with all of its superior proficiencies, inherent flaws, and dire prophecies of ridding the earth of humanity, this group of people is a defiant symbol of standing in the face of an interconnected, fast-paced world. For many readers, particularly Christian readers, Amish fiction is a huge hit, and has become synonmous (erroneous in my opinion, but that's neither here nor there) as the vanguard of Christian fiction. Amish romances flood Christian fiction topseller lists. In some of the big market bookstores, when you go to the tiny, two-by-two religious fiction section, you'll see non-fictional devotional books and then a slew Amish romance books. What exactly is it to be Amish? Are the portrayals of Amish life and society in the fictional books, real? Is the lifestyle peaceful, and simple, luring the modern citizen and what is it that attracts us? Join me for an insightful discussion as I chat with a formerly Amish woman and blogger, Anna Schrock about what it's really like to be Amish on Tuesday, May 23rd, at 7 pm Eastern time. This week, the MennoBrarians take a deep dive into Amish Romance self-publishing. Inspired by the conversation on Amish Country Treasure in season 2, in which Tillie speculated the book was written by a bot, Erin went on a research journey to see if she could figure out if the text was written by a human or AI (findings: inconclusive). In this episode, Erin shares some of what she found during this research journey. We chat self-publishing, random research topics, and whether it actually matters if bots write the books we read. So, when I clicked in to chat with debut Amish Romance author, Christen Krumm, I had no idea what I was in for. How does a woman who has never read an Amish book get a contract for two in blind auditions? Listen in to learn how and to discover why I was sold on the book before I'd read a word! Note: links may be affiliate links that provide me with a small commission at no extra expense to you. Why Did This YA Rom-Com Author Decide to Defect to Amish? Amish fiction--tales of maidens in kapps, men in straw hats, and a life lived at a buggy's pace. Or so they say. When Christen Krumm's synopsis of On the Golden Cliffs described a fish-out-of-water story--kind of two of them in one--I knew I had to read it. Listening to her talk about the process by which she auditioned (talk about waiting until the last possible second!) only confirmed that. Christen Krumm combines a social media influencer with an Amish novelist (shh... no one is supposed to know!) and throws them together. What isn't to love? What could be better? Oh, I know... the fact that she's going to write TWO MORE BOOKS in this series. EEEP! On the Golden Cliffs by Christen Krumm One wrong post has sent influencer Lyla Taylor's social media empire crashing to her feet. To save it, she'll have to escape to rural Montana. Six weeks in a high-end spa won't hurt…except, she's not booked into a spa, but at a rustic Amish B&B. Suddenly, her roommates are raccoons, and her daily activities include hanging laundry. Thanks, but no thanks. Lyla is ready to hit delete and head back to civilization. Amishman Reuben Milner has a secret…one that could destroy his world. For now, however, he's kept his life as a novelist under wraps, focusing on providing for his family after the tragic passing of his father. Renting the dawdi house seems the right move—until the wrong woman moves in. However, she comes with ideas to help improve their B&B, and that, along with her feisty personality, is something Reuben can't ignore. Even if the elders want him to focus on joining the church and finding a wife. When going home isn't an option, Lyla decides to help the Milners spruce up their rental. It does help distract her from her problems online. The more Lyla works on the rental with Reuben, the more she wonders if returning to her former life is worth it. However, is it the simple life that Lyla's heart longs for—or a particular guarded Amishman with secrets of his own? And when those secrets are discovered, what will it cost them both? Book two in the delightful and sweet Big Sky Amish Collection. Learn more about Christen on her WEBSITE. Like to listen on the go? We're venturing back into Amish-landia with a deep dive into the book that started it all, The Shunning by Beverly Lewis. We learned some things in this episode, dear listener. This is different from the larger black bonnet women may wear over the kapp. (Pike, 2015)Ordnung -The origins of the word “Ordnung” hail from the German language, the meaning being: “it's all good," and refers in general to a behavioral guide. There are in actual fact 2 different types of Ordnung. One deals with all of the important official decisions that have taken place since the beginning of the movement and this one is written down. The other (and the one which is not written down) is the behavioral code. It is this which determines exactly what it is to be Amish (Dimmitt, 2013)Old Order - The Old Order Amish separated from the Mennonites in 1693 are are thee single largest faction of Amish groups. In general, the Old Order Amish refrain from most forms of technology and do not use indoor plumbing or any kind of machinery that has a motor. They practice traditional faith practices as adapted by the Church in 1623, and are generally more conservative in their clothing and mannerisms (Amish Furniture Factory, 2016) New Order - New Order Amish split from the Old Order in Pennsylvania in the 1960's, and in general can be described as more progressive than the other faction (Amish America)"Anabaptist Escalator" - movement of an individual from low-church, world-rejecting plainness to higher floor of progressive, world-accommodating Anabaptist churches and beyond (Weaver-Zercher, 38)Shunning - This is a longstanding practice in which church members isolate, ignore, or otherwise punish someone for breaking community rules. Amish excommunication is a complicated process that occurs when someone does something that goes against the church's values (Wisiti, 2018)Books/Authors we mentioned:The Shunning by Beverly LewisMelody CarlsonAmish Heart by Miranda Rush (spicy!)The Shunning by Susan Joseph (spicy and dubcon)Sadly, though, I can't find a copy of it anywhere :(Articles/resources:Thrill of the Chaste by Valerie Weaver-Zercher"Why Amish romance novels are such a big hit for Harlequin" (Donaldson, 2020)"The Amish don't believe in insurance. Jen and Jackie dive into a world where they easily admit they have absolutely NO experience...the world of Amish romances. Despite the fact that both of your favorite librarians both grew up in Amish and farming country, neither of them have EVER READ A BOOK THAT FEATURES AN AMISH SET OF CHARACTERS. This month, they're rectifying that. Follow along for the ride as we hitch up the buggy and head out to the farm. This week, the MennoBrarians review and discuss some of the earliest books in the Amish fiction and Amish romance genre: Tillie a Mennonite Maid, from 1904, Sabina: a Story of the Amish from 1905, and The Masquerading of Margaret from 1908. These three texts are in the public domain so you can find and read them for free! Despite being more than 100 years old, these texts share some similarities to the Amish Romance texts of today - including lots of plot lines, chaste romance, and subtle agenda pushing.
Lee and Victoria reveal what they actually read back in the day as Young Adults before YA became the genre-eating monster it is. Vices include cheese, because who the hell doesn't love cheese? Even good vegan cheese counts. Lee is reading The Orchid Throne by Jeffe Kennedy and Victoria is reading Crown of Coral and Pearl by Mara Rutherford.
This week we return to the world of Amish Romance to discuss the book An Amish Husband for Tillie, by Amy Lillard. In this book we find lots to chat about, including improbable threats of shunning, untimely tree deaths, and the author's take on Amish gender roles.

In this episode the MennoBrairians discuss the Amish Romance novel, Minding the Amish Baby. Tune in for a lively discussion on haystacks (food, not field), Rumspringa, and what makes a baby an "Amish baby." Note: This is actually the first episode of Just Plain Wrong ever recorded! Because of that there are perhaps a few more audio blips than usual as we were still figuring things out about audio and internet. It also means that some references are to things happening in the fall of 2020, rather than present day.
Brittany Mouttet 5:16 PM (2 hours ago) to me I am so excited to share my conversation with Katy Jones-Gulsby, owner of Shell and Pine Vintage and freelance content writer, as we discuss her change in career path from fashion journalism to creative writing with an emphasis on poetry, always being a bit of a rebel, slinging vintage as a teenager, ghost writing for an Amish Romance series, her quarantine-born newsletter Are You Shrieking?, and why you have to know the all the rules in order to break them in episode 120.
How did Stephen get started on writing and what all he does as a story coach and how he helps writers. All the steps an independent writer needs to go through to get their book published. How do you choose a person to narrate your book and how do you find the best person to read your book. We talk about his book “The City of Snow and Stars” and how he found the time to write his book. We talk about the fact that he categorized his book as “Christain Fiction” and what does it mean to be a Christain author; and how writing has shaped his faith and the struggles that Stephen faced while writing, and how he started to give God more control over his writing. All that and so much more on this week's episode of a Slice of Beef which as always is brought to you by Gramma Bears Home Baking in Aisle 7 of the Old Strathcona Farmers Market in Beautiful Edmonton Alberta. Peace and Grace to all of you.

We review Book 1 of the "Expectant Amish Widows" series by Samantha Price/machine learning.
We’re coming out the gate at a wagon’s pace for this series y’all, beginning in the bucolic pastures of the middle west. This week, Morgan and Isabeau embark on a reverse rumspringa with a plunge into Amish romance, led by the deft hand of Patricia Davids in the first installment of her Amish of Cedar Grove series, The Wish. This slow burn sweet romance meanders through the agrarian and folksy close quarters courtship of our heroine, widow Laura Beth Yoder, and the formerly Amish and formerly incarcerated, Joshua King. But will the implications of racial and patriarchal supremacy outweigh the flutter of hands at the butter churn? Can a culture built on strict biblical fidelity produce enough heat to spark passion? Do yr girls have the patience for sweet romance? Unplug everything but yr podcatcher for this one y’all. Whoa!mance is a part of the Frolic Podcast Network.

Hey there word nerds! Today I have the pleasure of interviewing Patricia Davids on the show! Born and raised in Kansas, Pat was an NICU nurse for forty years, before switching careers to become an inspirational writer. She is now a USA Today best-selling author of Amish romance, enjoys playing with her dogs (who think fetch should be a twenty-four hour a day game) and happily dreaming up new stories. Her latest book, The Wish, is the first in her new romance series The Amish of Cedar Grove, and is now available. So listen in as Pat and I chat about this amazing book and how to craft a realistic and romantically charged Amish romance. In this episode Pat and I discuss: Crafting the feeling of anticipated grief within your characters. How to weave Amish culture into your romance naturally. Why you should drop your reader directly into the story and how to do it right. Adding romantic tension when your characters can’t be physical with each other. Tips and techniques to put emotion on the page internally instead of verbally. Plus, Pat’s #1 tip for writers. For more info and show notes: DIYMFA.com/250

When people first accused me of being a Wiccan missionary, I just thought it was a complete hoot until I realized that to a minor degree I evidently was.” The Da Vinci Code by Dan Brown (Christian) Angry Young Spaceman by Jim Munroe (Science fictionalizing his experience teaching English in South Korea) The Taqwacores by Michael Muhammad Knight, plus a Guardian article about the documentary movie and the interesting pseudo-reality of it all If you’re intrigued by the phenomenon of Amish Romance, you might try reading Thrill of the Chaste: The Allure of Amish Romance Novels by Valerie Weaver-Zercher Anatomy of a Girl Gang by Ashley Little (which struck Amanda as similar to The Harem by Safia Fazlul) Rapture Culture: Left Behind in Evangelical America by Amy Frykholm (in my vague memory this was super interesting, but it’s been a long time) The Diaries of Adam and Eve and Other Stories by Mark Twain (Christian) The Pawn by Steven James (Christian) We talked about Don’t Cry for Me, Hot Pastrami by Sharon Kahn in Episode 7 - Cozy Mysteries. Back in the studio with Paris and The Business, LLC, and we're discussing the plight of the oppressed, bullied male nerd and why the entitlement that is sometimes felt by said nerds could be sabotaging their interactions with women. Passivity never pays off, but being aggressive might not be in your wheelhouse - what then? Life isn't fair, and the sooner you except this, the sooner you can start leveling the playing field by playing the cards you've been dealt. All of this is in response to the Dr. NerdLove article that was everyway on the interwebs last week: What’s Really Wrong With Nice Guys – Entitlement, Nerds and Neanderthals http://www.doctornerdlove.com/2015/01/nice-guys-dont-finish-last/ Amish Romance? It's a thing. I am tragically white and I apologize. While I'm finishing/shipping on Assassin's Creed: Rogue and watching all the shoujo and boys love anime, Paris and The Business find a new show called Community, I have mixed Agent Carter feelings, and there's a show about loli battleships that have strategic sex - thanks, Japan. Africa is big, y'all, and not completely covered in ebola. The Business does the Shim-sham with his Jim Jam in Dragon Age: Inquisition and we're all loving Archer, just because. And apparently there's a selfie stick designed especially for looking at butts? Also, what happens when women accept compliments online? The first installment of My Fair Andrew is here, where we check in with Andrew to see how talking with strangers went - hilarity ensues. We flip tables over how I want to be equal, but also special (shut up) and how if you share an office with someone, you should wash your ass.
