Recently my daughter and I became a part of a mother-daughter book club. Our first book was an amazing middle-grade novel called Starfish. Starfish is both a heartbreaking and heartwarming story about a young girl named Ellie who, ever since she wore a whale swimsuit and made a big splash at her fifth birthday party, has been bullied about her weight.  At our first book club meeting, we had the incredible fortune of having a zoom call with the author of Starfish, Lisa Fipps, and after talking with her, I knew she would be a fantastic guest for the podcast. Starfish is based on experiences that Lisa had as a child, and she wrote this book because it is what she wished she had when she was a fat kid trying to cope with bullying. Lisa never told anyone what she was going through. She never reached out for help with the emotions: sadness, anger, shame and she never stood up for herself.  In a world where bullying is all too common, Starfish carries an incredible message that truly has the power to teach people, both young and old, about self-acceptance, compassion, and kindness to all.    About Lisa Lisa Fipps is a graduate of Ball State University, award-winning former journalist, current director of marketing for a public library (where she won the Sara Laughlin marketing award), and an author of middle-grade books. Starfish is her debut novel. She's working on her next novel and several others. She currently lives in Indiana and lived in Texas.    Connect with Lisa  Website https://authorlisafipps.com Facebook https://www.facebook.com/authorlisafipps/ Instagram https://www.instagram.com/authorlisafipps/ Twitter https://twitter.com/AuthorLisaFipps

Ellie was a big kid, and her sister was referring to her size. It has followed her in school and at home, and while her mom tries ever diet under the sun to get Ellie to lose weight, the kids at school have no problem making jokes about her weight. When her best friend moves away just before 6th grade starts, it seems as if her life just can't get any worse. Who will be there to support her when she's down. What Ellie doesn't know is that change is on the way. Recommended for grades 6 and up.

Welcome, listeners. This week's episode really hit close to home this week. I had the pleasure of interviewing Lisa Fipps author of the middle grade novel-in-verse novel called Starfish, which is her debut novel. The book focuses on the impact of body-shaming and the struggle to have a positive body image of yourself when the world's messages are against you. Lisa shares candidly the personal stories that inspired Starfish. You will also learn about Lisa growing up in a rural area as a very avid reader where books were her life line. She has great advice for aspiring authors, as well. I hope you are as encouraged as I was after this powerful conversation. On today's episode of Hook of a Book, I review Starfish, by Lisa Fipps. This book was amazing. Just amazing. It was a listener request sent in from Maeve, and I read it all in one day! I just couldn't put it down! If you like books written in verse, I couldn't recommend this book more! If you have a book you want me to review on the show, email me at: hookofabookpodcast@gmail.com. You can also send in a voice message that might be featured on a future episode! --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/ellie-mano/message

The Bookish Society Podcast

Novels in verse- I am obsessed. Such a great way to say more with fewer words. Lisa and I hit it off right away and chit-chatted about not only her story- but fat-phobia and how it affects all humans. Starfish is a book you'll be thinking about long after you turn the last page. Bookish Society kids will also be reading this book next Fall- we'll read 22 books next school year!!
