It all started in 1986 with the novella THE HELLBOUND HEART (part of a horror anthology NIGHT VISIONS VOLUME 3) written by English author Clive Barker. The story soon became a movie in 1987 leading to multiple films in the franchise, introducing horror fans to the cenobite demons, the puzzle box talisman known as the Lemarchand Configuration, and the main cenobite nicknamed Pinhead. Now a new movie has arrived in the franchise. Some say it is a reboot. Either way HELLRAISER (2022) was released on Hulu for Halloween 2022 on October 7th.Recovering addicts Riley (Odessa A'zion) and her boyfriend Trevor (Drew Starkey) decide to rob a warehouse in a remote section of their city. When they find a strange puzzle box, Riley's brother Matt (Brandon Flynn) suddenly disappears leading Riley to believe that the box is actually some sort of talisman. Riley and Trevor research the owner of the warehouse that they stole the item from. Hoping to find her brother, Riley, joined by Trevor and their friends, head to an abandoned mansion owned by the missing billionaire Roland Voight (Goran Visnjic). The movie was directed by David Bruckner, well known for the incredibly reviewed Netflix original THE RITUAL (2017). The screenplay for HELLRAISER was written by Ben Collins and Luke Piotrowski, best known for their horror films SIREN (2016) and Bruckner's other film THE NIGHT HOUSE (2020). HELLRAISER (2022) has received fairly good reviews and some say it may be the best in the franchise. Your co-hosts take a look at the movie and are joined by fabulous Hollywood actor Dan Lench in the discussion.

But this one is... well... even looking past Ricky's awful watching while driving, Henry did something to us we weren't expecting: discussing a movie together as a group and then made our decisions at the end of recording rather than before starting. Yup. I can say that this is one of the few times that our conversations moved and changed our thought on the movie by listening to others opinions. And that's what it's all about. Talks about a ‘Hellraiser' reboot or remake had been in the works for years with original creator Clive Barker occasionally offering updates about the film. Various writers and directors were pitched for the project for a franchise that had already seen a multitude of lackluster sequels. By 2013, Barker said he was set to direct and write the newest iteration of the series with Doug Bradley returning as Pinhead. The project continued to languish away in development hell until 2019 when Spyglass Media Group got involved with David Bruckner hired to oversee the film after he found success with an underrated horror film called ‘The Night House.' Bruckner ended up reteaming with the same writers behind that film with Ben Collins and Luke Piotrowski penning the script for the latest version of ‘Hellraiser' along with a new Pinhead that would be played by a woman named Jamie Clayton. Fascinated by the chance to explore themes like possession and temptation, Bruckner unleashed an updated version of the franchise where a girl battling addiction comes into contact with the Lament Configuration and all hell breaks loose…In the latest episode of Rewind of the Living Dead, we're going to solve the puzzle box and promise we have such sights to show you as we review the 2022 reboot for ‘Hellraiser'…

Director: David Bruckner Screenwriter: Ben Collins, Luke Piotrowski, David S Goyer Starring: Odessa A'zion, Jamie Clayton, Adam Faison, Drew Starkey Synopsis: A take on Clive Barker's 1987 horror classic where a young woman struggling with addiction comes into possession of an ancient puzzle box, unaware that its purpose is to summon the Cenobites. Not all horror films are created equal. There are films are classified as horror films but really just have horror elements. They're the kind of horror films that people that say "I don't like horror films" will watch. Then there are films like Hellraiser where...well...you know damn well it's the kind of horror film that people that don't like horror films won't watch. The 2022 Hellraiser is a great remake/continuous/soft reboot of the franchise. It is a very 80's type of horror film. For better or worse it has a lot of the same beats and tropes from an 80's horror film which actually makes it an even better remake. This also means that if there are people who will nitpick or complain about 80's horror films, they'll take some issues with this film. But for others, it's exactly what they would be expecting. You get the gore, the creepiness and yes, even the unnecessary nudity and sex scenes. It's all there. Considering how niche Hellraiser is (yes, folks know of Hellraiser but most folks aren't checking for it), releasing this on Hulu is smart. This has actually been a pretty go strategy. They did the same with Prey. Release a very good film on streaming that has a cult following and get people excited for it. Then maybe the next can go to theaters and actually do well. You know their screenwriting work from THE NIGHT HOUSE, SUPER DARK TIMES and more, but alongside Kevin Phillips they are also the hosts of Sync Ratios, a terrific Neon Genesis Evangelion podcast. We've had such an amazing run of special guests since our pod began, but it was particularly fun to chat anime with two folks we're enormous fans of, and we really can't thank Ben and Luke enough for their time. We run down where you can currently find their feature films during the review (HELLRAISER arrives on Hulu on Oct 7th!), but we highly encourage any Evangelion fans to check out the Sync Ratios podcast. This film is an excellent window into the life of teenage boys growing up in the late 90's, with a dark twist that pushes an already crumbling friendship to the brink. Directed by Kevin Phillips, this film is an absolute masterpiece in tone, audio, and cinematography that all culminates into a dreamlike world of nostalgia. With a cast of all unknown (at the time) actors that absolutely smash it out of the park, we cannot recommend this one enough.

Writing partners Ben Collins and Luke Piotrowski had already managed to get several scripts made into films but there was plenty more left on the cutting room floor from projects that never got picked up or pieces of stories that were deemed too ambitious that the pair called their “murdered darlings.” Armed with those ideas along with an intense desire to write something that would scare each other, Collins and Piotrowski started to develop an idea for a new script that would deal with a subject that was truly terrifying — the intense reality of mortality. Despite never having suffered through any intense grief in their own lives yet knowing that death is looming around the corner for all of us and the ones we love, they decided to explore that as a setting for a film. The final story centered around a woman named Beth who is trying to make sense of her husband's shocking suicide and the trove of secrets he was keeping from her that she begins to uncover in the wake of his death. In the latest episode of Rewind of the Living Dead, we're going to crank up the stereo to listen to ‘The Calvary Cross' and make sure the boat is tied to the dock as we review the 2021 thriller ‘The Night House'…

***SPOILERS*** The Night House premiered at Sundance all the way back in January of 2020. Flash forward to late August of 2021 and it's just hit your local multiplex. Directed by David Buckner from an original screen play by Ben collins and Luke Piotrowski, the psychological horror tells the story of Beth (played by the wonderful Rebecca Hall) as she unearths both literally and figuratively the secrets kept by her late husband Owen in the wake of his Suicide. It would be difficult to say what is more terrifying, confronting your fear of death, loss and abandonment or learning that the person you've loved for so long might not have existed at all. On todays episode we will not only hash out our thoughts and feelings on The Night House, but we will also try to connect it to existing milestones in the genre. Think of it as the horror version of Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon. Once again, thank you for listening. Please enjoy the show. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/movieslastnight/message

Sundance 2020 Special Part 2: Location, Location, Location These two very different movies both had striking locations that set the tone for the films. The Night House director David Bruckner and writers Ben Collins and Luke Piotrowski enjoy working in the horror genre, and wanted to explore making a film that doesn't make you “feel safe” with many dense layers. The film deals with the horror of grief, loss and loneliness faced by the main character, Beth, played by Rebecca Hall. The Night House was shot mostly at night in a lake house in upstate New York. The Night House was one of the first deals to close out of Sundance this year. It sold for $12 million to Disney-owned Searchlight. Black Bear takes place in a large lake house estate, and director/writer Lawrence Michael Levine wrote the script with a specific location in mind. Unfortunately, the original location fell through, and Levine had to find another spot, which turned out to be quite remote but amazingly striking on film. The movie stars Aubrey Plaza, Christopher Abbott and Sarah Gadon, whose characters and performances script-flip midway through the film, but we are never meant to know what the characters actually think. The movie wittily explores issues of gender and feminism, and later, has a funny take on indie filmmaking. Black Bear has yet to find distribution. Welcome the newest episode of Dark Discussions, your place for the discussion of horror film, fiction, and all that’s fantastic. Teenage angst. Living in ennui. It’s the typical story heard from anyone that went through those years of life feeling nothing but a dead end lay ahead. The new film, Super Dark Times, shows this type of outlook to the extreme. Having played the festival circuit earlier in the year, the film (directed by Kevin Phillips and with a screenplay written by Ben Collins and Luke Piotrowski) appeared on VOD on October 3rd with reviews of 92% from Rottentomatoes. Zack and Josh live a typical teenage life. Bored and using their free time playing video games and going through yearbooks, one day the two meet up with Daryl and Charlie at the local convenience store. When a horrible accident occurs, the boys try to cover up their mistake. Unfortunately the mental makeup of their young minds aren’t able to cope with the guilt that weighs upon them. Soon more reactionary acts of cause further chaos in their lives. Dark Discussions takes a look at this very dark drama that some have classified as horror and thriller alike. But no matter what it is, the film is very dispiriting and makes one feel awful. Is that bad? No! That’s what a dark film is supposed to do to you. Your co-hosts give their opinions on the movie and where it fits into genre film. Based upon the novel by Academy Award-winning screenwriter Paddy Chayefsky (who wrote the script under a pseudonym), Altered States inspires a chat which touches on the film’s themes, whether or not it’s really a love story at heart, and the debatable merits of its “apeman run amok” sequence.  Along the way, we discuss sensory deprivation tanks, the film’s massive list of potential directors, and…“wisdom teeth” movies?
