This week, we're headed back to Norway to take on another Norse mythical creature, the Fjøsnissen, aka Nisse, aka Barn Elf. This one turns out to be a "scary" movie for the whole family. Steve calls it, "three deleted f*&^s away from being a Hallmark movie" special. This movie earns a solid "Middle Shelf" rating from the guys as a not too gory, but well-made Christmas Vacation/Home Alone/Leprechaun mash-up. Cocktail of the Week Nordic Sidecar 2 oz Aquavit 1 oz Orange Liqueur 1 oz Lemon Juice Shake over ice and serve in a martini glass Notes about this episode: Lutefisk is dried fish, usually cod, which is cured in lye for several days, then rinsed and steamed. What you end up with is "fish jello" that is best consumed along with enough rye-bread flavored aquavit that you don't remember the experience. But, that's not fair, neither of us have ever tried it, although Brandon did grow up in an area where Norwegians are plentiful. However, do not try and feed it to a barn elf in place of it's traditional offerings, because it will just get really pissed off. Police officers in Norway do not carry firearms, so you're betting off checking with neighbors there for a gun if your barn elf goes apeshit. Leave that five-star review here on Spotify. De kan fortsette med å lage lutefisk.En: It takes time, but they clean the kitchen. Ingrid, Magnus, and Lars smile. They are happy. They can continue making lutefisk.Nb: Så begynner de på nytt. Ingrid tar torsken. Magnus tar luten. Lars passer på at alt er rent. Ingrid, Magnus og Lars jobber sammen. De gjør det forsiktig. De vil ikke ha flere uhell.En: So they start again. Ingrid takes the cod. Magnus takes the lye. Lars makes sure everything is clean. Ingrid, Magnus, and Lars work together. They do it carefully. They don't want any more accidents.Nb: Til slutt er lutefisken klar. Den lukter godt. Ingrid, Magnus og Lars er fornøyd. De har ryddet opp rotet. De har laget lutefisk.En: Finally, the lutefisk is ready. It smells delicious. Ingrid, Magnus, and Lars are satisfied. They have cleaned up the mess. Noen ganger blir det rot, men det er ok. Det viktigste er å prøve igjen. Det viktigste er å være sammen. Og det viktigste er å lage lutefisk.En: The story ends with a sunset. Ingrid, Magnus, and Lars are in the cabin. They are full and happy. They have learned a lesson. Sometimes there is a mess, but it's okay. The most important thing is to try again. Lo, it is nearly 350 years that we and our fathers have inhabited this most lovely land, and never before has such terror appeared in Britain as we have now suffered from a pagan race, nor was it thought that such an inroad from the sea could be made. Behold, the church of St. Cuthbert spattered with the blood of the priests of God, despoiled of all its ornaments; a place more venerable than all in Britain is given as a prey to pagan peoplesAlcuin, a senior adviser to Charlemagne – the most powerful man in Europe – was writing to the king of Northumbria to express his shock and horror at the attack“...the woeful inroads of heathen men destroyed God's church in Lindisfarne island by fierce robbery and slaughter'. Writing in the next century, the chronicler Symeon of Durham wrote: ‘They miserably ravaged and pillaged everything. They trod the holy things under their polluted feet, they dug down the altars, and plundered all the treasures of the church. Some of the brethren they slew, some they carried off with them in chains, the greater number they stripped naked, insulted, and cast out of doors, and some they drowned in the sea.”Well pillaging and destroying it's a tough work that makes men hungry!OK, besides the joking, who were the Vikings and what was their food like? Let's do some popular myth busting plus lets check some traditional Norse food of the time.Whey Pickles, Lutefisk, Skyr dairy, hares and rabbits, stews, nuts and berries, game meat, ale and mead. For ad free version of the episodes with extra content why don't you join me on Patreon?https://www.patreon.com/thedeliciouslegacyEnjoy!Thom and The Delicious Legacy Music by Motion ArraySupport this show http://supporter.acast.com/the-delicious-legacy. Happy Reformation Sunday, celebrating the re-forming, re-newing work of the Holy Spirit in the church in every generation. Lutefisk, lutefisk, lefse, lefse: We're the mighty Lutherans—Yah, shore, you betcha! We are also in week six of our series focusing on Emotionally Healthy Relationships—EHR for short—as Faith leans into our congregation's vision and dream to grow “closer to and more like Jesus.” Emotionally Healthy Relationships is an eight-week preaching, devotional, and small group series based on the work of Pete and Geri Scazzero. This week's lesson has to do with “Climbing the Ladder of Integrity.” You can learn more about Faith and about Emotionally Healthy Relationships at our website, www.faithshelton.org. Thanks for listening today. I've grown up in the Lutheran tradition. I've had the privilege to read a chunk of Luther's writings and quite a bit about his life. He's no saint. He wasn't perfect, and was, in many ways, maybe just at the right place at the right time in history to be an instrument of the Holy Spirit to lead a re-formation of a Christian church that had gotten off track. There are countless stories about Luther, his life, what he accomplished, what he wrote and taught. Today I want to share four details about Martin Luther that are meaningful to me, and why they matter. Three are a matter of public record, and the fourth is just a good story that sounds true. But we've got to start where Luther would: with the Word of God. Grab your Bible and open it up to Romans 3:21-28.Romans 3:21-28But now apart from the law the righteousness of God has been made known, to which the Law and the Prophets testify. 22 This righteousness is given through faith in[h] Jesus Christ to all who believe. There is no difference between Jew and Gentile, 23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, 24 and all are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus. 25 God presented Christ as a sacrifice of atonement,[i] through the shedding of his blood—to be received by faith. He did this to demonstrate his righteousness, because in his forbearance he had left the sins committed beforehand unpunished— 26 he did it to demonstrate his righteousness at the present time, so as to be just and the one who justifies those who have faith in Jesus.27 Where, then, is boasting? It is excluded. Because of what law? The law that requires works? No, because of the law that requires faith. 28 For we maintain that a person is justified by faith apart from the works of the law. John 8:31-36And now a short reading from the gospel of John, chapter 8, beginning at verse 31:To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, “If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. 32 Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” 33 They answered him, “We are Abraham's descendants and have never been slaves of anyone. How can you say that we shall be set free?” 34 Jesus replied, “Very truly I tell you, everyone who sins is a slave to sin. 35 Now a slave has no permanent place in the family, but a son belongs to it forever. 36 So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.  The gospel of the Lord.Support the show
