"I am a steadfast anchor living in purpose and on purpose serving wherever my feet are."Coach, doctor of Biblical naturopathy, co-host of the "Faith. Family. Fulfillment." podcast and author of a book of the same name, and a very dear friend to Culture Matters Dr. Suzanne Vester is joining us for her inaugural appearance on the show and we are ecstatic to have her here. Dr. Vester and Jay are digging into Dr. Vester's lifelong journey in service and helping others and how that has been a major influence throughout her life, the importance of making sure there is alignment between you mind, body, and spirit, and why a good portion of the most successful among us have learned that it is more important to speak less than it is to listen more. Dr. Vester has dedicated her life to helping others in more ways than one and it was an honor to have her on this episode of The Culture Matters Podcast. If you or someone you know would be interested in donating to The Well, please visit https://www.zeffy.com/fundraising/steps-of-faith-29029-for-the-well .

Starting with body, soul, mind, and spirit, Chris and Jay are walking our audience through the notion that once all of these things are in line and a person is willing to do the work to get there, aspects of their personal and professional life will begin to blossom in ways that they simply hadn't before. We're taking a deep dive into self-improvement and firing on all cylinders with our good friend, the and only Chris Vester.

The guys are back together this week… sort of. Yack is on the hunt for a new ride, while AJ reveals a ‘secret' side gig (which may come into play if the economy keeps going the way it has been). In addition to all the recent economic turmoil, there was weather-related drama, and AJ was smack dab in the middle of it. With the finale of Daredevil Born Again looming, the guys get you all caught up through episode 8. There's even a little bonus breakdown of the Superman sneak peek from last week. But just as the guys are ready to shut it down, there's a surprise ‘cameo' to bring the episode home. Pour yourself a proper pint and have a listen... but make sure your Ring doorbell camera is ON at all times. You never know who might show up on your doorstep.

Mary dives into an exhilarating conversation with John and Nicole Vester. From the very beginning, John was ready to document much of the pregnancy on his blog. Initially expecting twins, to later finding out there was only one heartbeat, the emotional rollercoaster didn't end there. As if decoding the NIPT results weren't challenging enough, they found themselves navigating the confusion that arose from Nicole initially carrying twins. Despite these issues. the odds of their baby being born with Down syndrome were low. However, when their son was 5 days old, they received the news that their son, Finn, was born with Down syndrome. For many, this might have been a turning point, but for John and Nicole, it was simply part of their incredible journey. Down syndrome didn't change their love or commitment, but rather strengthened their bond and their new resolve to give Finn the best life possible. Their story is an inspiring testament to the power of love, patience and perseverance. The Vesters show us that no matter the challenges, with a heart full of love and a spirit of determination, anything is possible

This is an important episode that reminds us why we serve in the first place and we hope you enjoy this conversation with Chris Vester.

The Arctic is changing more rapidly than anywhere else on earth due to climate change, and this is profoundly impacting the people that live in and depend on the ecosystems in these cold regions. In Season 7, Episode 13, host Sarah Thorne and cohost Jeff King, National Lead of the Engineering With Nature (EWN) Program, US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), welcome back Laura Wendling, Senior Research Scientist at SINTEF Community in Trondheim, Norway. We continue our conversation on how innovative nature-based solutions (NBS) are being used in cold regions. After recording Episode 12, Laura was headed to the Gaia Arctic Summit held in Vesterålen in Northern Norway. The summit focused on how to accelerate the transition to climate resilience in the Arctic. She returned inspired: “It was fabulous from start to finish. The landscape there is absolutely stunning, and I think seeing it really brought home how important it is that we protect this beautiful area and the people who live there.” The summit brought together people from policy, finance, business, research and innovation, and public administration. “The main message for me is the need to collaborate across disciplines in how we work every day—not just having a meeting once a year but how we work in our daily life and how we plan things.”Laura goes on to discuss the policies, challenges, and opportunities for advancing NBS in cold regions and some of the efforts going on in Europe. She notes that there is strong explicit support for NBS within the European Green Deal and associated strategies such as the Biodiversity Strategy for 2030—policies designed to set goals to deliver on international commitments. One of the challenges that Laura notes is aligning policy at various levels, from the high-level European national policies to those on the ground at the local level. Jeff notes a similar challenge in the US: “Even those individuals or organizations that are receptive to the idea of NBS still have their own set of policies, rules, or regulations that they must adhere to and sometimes those can be contrary to the overall goal of integrating NBS into a landscape. We must find that common ground and be able to highlight the value of NBS and what that means for local economies, sustainability, and resilience.”Laura also notes challenges in valuing NBS and making trade-offs are particularly evident in the Arctic. “Where we see the sea ice dissolving and opening up new transport routes and revealing previously unknown mineral resources, there are all sorts of development possibilities. How do we ensure that the Arctic is developing in a way that's consistent with the needs and desires of the local populations?”Looking forward, Jeff highlights the ongoing work at ERDC's Cold Regions Research and Engineering Laboratory. “We are continuing to prioritize NBS and look for opportunities to integrate NBS concepts and projects into our Arctic communities. International collaboration is something that I want to see EWN continue to support.” Laura agrees with this effort and has a call to action for listeners: “I would ask everybody listening—our global community—to think about a consolidated action plan to engage the full range of stakeholders and move across borders to address the issues of climate change because climate change doesn't stop at borders. We all have to work together. Only global action is going to have the outcome that we all need.”We hope you enjoy our final Season 7 episodes on NBS in cold regions with Laura Wendling. Season 8 kicks off in September. SummaryDo you work in a large NGO or UN agency, and wonder how the heck you are supposed to stimulate innovations in such a sizable, potentially quite bureaucratic organization?Do you assume that organization size and structure matter when it comes to creating a good climate for innovation? And is lack of innovation funds as big an issue as we make it out to be?In this podcast episode, I interview Soren Vester Haldrup, Innovation Fund Manager at UNDP, on how to kindle innovation in large development agencies. Many people associate 'innovative culture' with small start ups, but there is not necessarily a link between the two. Soren's Bio:Innovation Specialist and Fund Manager, United Nations Development Programme (UNDP)Board Member, Global IntegritySenior Consultant, Oxford Policy Management Policy Analyst, UNDP We discuss: How and why UNDP's approach to innovation transitioned from a focus on going after small, project-size innovations to a portfolio approach of larger-scale innovations that aim to address system-level challenges and multi-faceted ‘wicked issues' that only groups of actors can addressToo many innovations are solutions looking for a problem; stay focused on the problem longer!Perhaps counter-intuitively (at least for me), not all solutions need to be pursued, as scale is not always good for wicked issues. Rather, UNDP uses an innovation funnel model, in which many innovations are expected to fail fast. But getting to that one solution that can be scaled is not always the solutionYou need buy-in from leadership at the right time and interest, engagement and encouragement from the grassrootsUNDP uses 'deep demonstrations', instead of scaling. It also aims to create demand for innovations on the side of peers, primary constituents, and fundersA leadership mindset of humility and comfort with uncertainty is not always present across culturesHuman inertia may be present more strongly in large organizations because they've been around for a long time. And the number of approvals needed in such organizations is typically significant. On the other hand, in small organizations, groupthink can be more prevalentAvailability of money is an issue, but the flexibility of money is a bigger issueInnovation is both about small tweaks to existing solutions as well as big breakthroughs to overcome system-wide issues Resources:Soren's TwitterSoren's LinkedInMedium BlogUNDP blog on innovations Youtube video of this podcastClick here to subscribe to be alerted when new podcast episodes come out or when Tosca produces other thought leadership pieces.Or email Tosca at tosca@5oaksconsulting.org if you want to talk about your social sector organization's needs, challenges, and opportunities. You can find Tosca's content by following her on her social media channels: Twitter LinkedIn Fa
