In this episode, I sit down with singer-songwriter CJ Hooper to talk about building songs—and confidence—as an independent artist without rushing the process. We dig into how moving from Texas to Washington shaped his musical perspective, and why honest, story-driven country music seems to resonate no matter where you live.CJ and I talk about releasing Over Yonder, his second album just a year after his debut, and the surprisingly self-confronting experience of hearing your own voice back in the studio. We also get into early cassette-tape influences, playing in a band with musicians decades older than him, cutting his teeth at open mics, and slowly figuring out how his original songs want to live in the world. It's a conversation about patience, craft, and letting the work grow naturally—one song at a time.Music from the Episode:Burn it Down (CJ Hooper)Lookie Over Yonder (CJ Hooper)Rain Song (CJ Hooper)Thank you for listening. Send me a messageIn this episode of Inside The Mix, host Marc Matthews engages in a profound conversation with Tyler Lyle, the singer-songwriter and one-half of the synthwave duo, The Midnight. Tyler delves into the enigmatic nature of songwriting, describing it as "a well-narrated hallucination," and likens the creative process to "trying to start a truck sitting on a block of ice." Drawing from his folk storytelling roots, Tyler shares how he seamlessly integrates evocative lyrics into The Midnight's nostalgic synth-driven soundscapes. He contrasts the tangible aspects of music production with the abstract challenges of lyric writing, emphasizing the importance of consistent dedication—what he refers to as the "ass-in-chair method." This disciplined approach involves daily studio sessions from 10 am to 5 pm, complemented by morning routines of journaling, exercise, and meditation to foster creativity. The synergy between Tyler and his production partner, Tim McEwan, is highlighted as a harmonious blend of prolific idea generation and meticulous refinement. Despite geographical distances, they prioritize periodic in-person collaborations to capture the irreplaceable energy of shared creative spaces.Much of the discussion centers on Tyler's transition from confessional songwriting to crafting lyrics rich in archetypes and universal symbols. Inspired by Carl Jung's philosophies, he aims to create a shared mythological space within The Midnight's music, allowing listeners to project their meanings onto the imagery. What You'll Learn:The abstract nature of lyric writing and strategies to overcome creative challenges. The importance of consistent routines in fostering creativity.Balancing prolific idea generation with meticulous refinement in collaborative settings. The role of archetypes and universal symbols in crafting resonant lyrics.Insights into blending folk storytelling with synthwave aesthetics. For aspiring artists, Tyler emphasizes creating work that embodies truth and necessity, encouraging authentic expression over external validation. He reminds creatives that they are conduits, "ferrying ideas from one realm to this one," and underscores the significance of producing art that resonates fundamentally.Join Marc and Tyler as they explore the depths of the songwriting process, offering invaluable insights for independent music producers and artists seeking to elevate their craft.Links mentioned in this episode:Follow Tyler Lyle Support the showDownload your FREE Producer Growth Scorecard Follow Marc Matthews' Socials:Instagram | YouTube | Synth Music Mastering Thanks for listening!!

In today's episode, we're gonna explore what it looks when we write about facing a crisis. We've all been in a dilemma in our life, right? It's when no matter what we choose, there's always something to lose, but also something to gain. But it's normal if we fear the loss more than having the potential to gain something.Being in a dilemma, there's just so much uncertainty attached it.And we might fear making a choice at all.So when we write lyrics about a dilemma, we can actually provide guidance to our audience … whenever they face a similar crisis. And in this episode, you will find out how you can write lyrics about a person's dilemma. What it takes to truly create a hard choice for your song's main character and I'll also show you all the options of where you can place that crossroad moment in your lyrics' narrative. And as a lyric example, we'll look at Gloria Gaynor's song: “I Will Survive” because there's so much to take away from the way those lyrics were written.Sound good?Awesome, then let's get started! What's the episode about?[00:01:45] Overview: Waypoints Inciting Incident, Turning Point, Crisis[00:04:29] Crisis[00:06:41] Real Choice[00:07:42] Meaningful Stakes[00:08:59] Best Bad Choice[00:10:08] Irreconcilable goods  Show Notes:Powerful Lyrics Masterclass: https://www.writingthelyrics.com/plm-masterclassThrowing Someone's Life Out Of Balance – Waypoint #1: The Inciting Incident – https://storiesinsongs.com/podcast/episode-044/Writing A Turning Point Moment in Lyrics – Waypoint #2: The Turning Point Progressive Complication – https://storiesinsongs.com/podcast/episode-046/“Lose Yourself” by EminemIf I Let You Go lyrics © Kobalt Music Publishing Ltd., Universal Music Publishing GroupWarning lyrics © Warner Chappell Music, IncI'm a Believer lyrics © Sony/ATV Music Publishing LLC, Universal Music Publishing GroupHey, are you looking to create an emotional impact with your words so that your lyrics don't fall flat?Maybe you wanna tell your story but don't know how to write a great song that moves you and your listeners. All you need is to learn how.So I invite you to join the Powerful Lyrics Masterclass. This course helps you to move from unsure to unstoppable and confidently Turn Your Idea Into A Finished Ly FREE WEBCLASS: How To Come Up With Song Ideas Even If You Think There's Nothing Left To Write About.Visit: https://lyrics.storiesinsongs.com/Support the showWrite Compelling Lyrics That Touch People's Emotions WITHOUT Getting Stuck In Songwriter's Block. You know, I always consider what happens in a powerful lyric like a journey. It's basically about watching a character move from one point in their life to another. They are in a certain external or internal situation, and they wanna get from where they are to a better place. So there's always this little journey that the song's main character goes on. But before anyone moves in life and takes action, most of the time, though, something must happen beforehand. And that's what today's episode is all about. It's about that incident that makes them see that they gotta pursue what they want so that they can get rid of an imbalance. It's like they feel that something is off, and they're pulled towards something better — externally or internally. So, if you want to find out how to write lyrics with a meaningful message, then this episode is the first part of five to doing just that. Here's what we'll cover:[00:01:37] 5 Commandments[00:03:54] Definition of the Inciting Incident[00:08:31] Creating Drive in the Audience[00:09:29] Causal and Coincidental Inciting Incidents[00:11:03] Placement of the Inciting Incident Show Notes#37 - Attention Grabbing Opening Lines - Part 1: The Powerful ProblemHot Legs lyrics © Sony/ATV Music Publishing LLCThat's Amore lyrics © Sony/ATV Music Publishing LLCI Will Survive lyrics © Universal Music Publishing GroupThe Foundations of Decay lyrics © Sony/ATV Music Publishing LLCStan lyrics © Kobalt Music Publishing Ltd., Peermusic Publishing, Warner Chappell Music, IncI'll Be There For You lyrics © Sony/ATV Music Publishing LLC, Universal Music Publishing GroupIf you want to move from unsure to unstoppable ...And confidently Turn Your Idea Into A Finished Lyric... In today's episode, I want to talk with you about you, your purpose, and why we write lyrics. For me, when it comes to writing – no matter if it's novels or lyrics – I use my words as the means to communicate with my audience and deliver a meaningful message that has the power to make an impact on them. And I guess, since you are here, you have the same desire. You want to be heard because you have something to say about life. And what you have to say matters. But communicating what we have to say in a way that matters to others isn't easy. We can't be preaching to the choir. We can't take the role of a parent and say: Don't do this because it leads to … We all know that no one listens if you preach it to them. On the other hand, if we are direct and say it bluntly, people might hear our words, but they will not care or take them seriously. We could also just write an academic paper and explain why our message is important … But who's ever going to read that bulky volume? That's why in today's episode, we talk about a storytelling principle that helps you deliver your message in a way that affects lives, changes minds, touches hearts, and makes an impact. Because what it all comes down to is that we, as songwriters, lyricists, and storytellers, have an amazing power to influence people's lives and make a positive, even life-changing, contribution. But that only works if we rely on one of the most basic and most important storytelling principles. What that is, well, you're about to find out.Podcast Overview:[00:02:25] Treat A Song Like An Experience[00:05:29] Why Stories Matter[00:11:12] The Five Commandments of Storytelling[00:15:16] Wrap up - 5 CommandmentsTo get your free gift: Uncover Irresistible Lyric Ideas go to lyrics.storiesinsongs.comTag me on Facebook: @LyricArtistsTag me on Instagram: @stories.in.songsSupport the show

#038 - Let's address the question of why we should look at the craft of storytelling when we write our lyrics – apart from the impact the power of storytelling has on our audience. Let's focus on our writing process.Because when we write our lyrics, it's good to know where we are going. Otherwise, we're just writing words that are all over the place. And that's going to feel messy to our listeners. So to write a good line or lyric section, we have to ensure that every part of the lyric does what it's supposed to: Engage and connect. And once we get a clear idea of what we are trying to accomplish, everything unlocks. So if you look for a compass point that helps you write your lyrics with clarity and intention, this episode is for you.Episode Overview:[00:02:21] Your Lyric Writing Compass Point[00:05:59] Your character's literal action[00:12:20] The Size of The Cast in Your Lyric[00:16:58] Setting and Context[00:18:58] The Purpose of Literal Action [00:23:32] Recap: Literal ActionShow NotesFREE web class: Uncovering Your Irresistible Lyric Idea: https://lyrics.storiesinsongs.com/ideaEpisode 037 – Attention Grabbing Opening Lines Part 1 – The Powerful Problem: http://storiesinsongs.com/podcast/episode-037 Another Day In Paradise lyrics © Concord Music Publishing LLCWelcome To The Jungle lyrics © Universal Music Publishing GroupYou Shouldn't Kiss Me Like This lyrics © Tokeco TunesI Will Survive lyrics © Universal Music Publishing GroupKnowing Which Lyric Lines & Ideas To Keep Or Throw Out – How To Answer The Question Of Relevancy – http://storiesinsongs.com/podcast/episode-036Finding Topics to Write about by Looking at Universal Human Values – https://storiesinsongs.com/podcast/episode-023/Worksheet: resources.storiesinsongs.comTo get your free gift: Uncover Irresistible Lyric Ideas go to lyrics.storiesinsongs.comTag me on Facebook: @LyricArtistsTag me on Instagram: @stories.in.songsSupport the show

And if our song doesn't hook our listeners straight away, they might not listen to it at all.But we want to get heard, right?Songs are a powerful way to make an impact on someone – in as little as three minutes. But in order to get our message across or what we have to say about life, we have to get people's attention right from the first line on. Otherwise, … it's like a movie.
